Chapter two: Seekers of the Sacred Jewel and a Half Demon’s Temper
We watched as the village men circled Inuyasha, afraid at the smirk that played across his lips as he looked at them out the corner of his eyes. Kaede lifted her arm up with her fingers open and we both stepped backwards “Pay no heed to Inuyasha, you two.” Kagome looked down at the Jewel as I kept an eye on Inuyasha who growled. “I hate having to wait, and I hate the smell of you!” I narrowed my eyes at Inuyasha as he took a step forward. I reached up a hand, squeezed Kagome’s arm and we both ran for it, with me keeping my hearing sharp for what Inuyasha was going to do next.
I heard him jump and threw myself onto Kagome making her fall hoping to keep her and the Jewel safe. I then felt the sharp pain of his claws on my back, reopening my wounds, but kept my mouth shut. Then we lifted ourselves up, looking at him as he smirked at us and lifted his clawed hand facing upwards, his finger curling inwards his knuckles cracking. “You want me to scratch your back?” he cackled. I stared at him, trying to control my breathing. “You really just tried to hit me just now didn’t you?” I glanced at Kagome as we straightened up, black spots running through my vision. Inuyasha only smirked back at her.
“Shoot him.” The villagers shot at Inuyasha as commanded. Inuyasha slashed the arrows out of the air, and then cut the trees beside the village people down, landing on one of the sharp points of where one of the trees had been. I grabbed Kagome and she looked at me “Run towards the bridge now, and do not stop,” I commanded. She nodded her head, and while Inuyasha was talking, we ran towards the bridge.
“Prepare yourself!” I looked back at Inuyasha as he jumped through the trees and narrowed my eyes ignoring the blood running down my legs and back. “Prepare for what?” I looked at Kagome, groaning in my mind as she goaded him on. Does she never give up? He was coming in for another attack when I threw myself in the way, getting slashed into the ground as Kagome went flying and dropped the Jewel. As Inuyasha came down and landed on a rock, beads flew onto his neck and attached themselves together making a non removable necklace of subjugation.
“Say a word to subdue him now, child!” I helped Kagome up and we ran away, falling down the embankment. Even though I tried to grab her, she pulled me with her, dropping the Jewel again, which rolled on to the bridge. “What word should I say?!” she asked frantically. As we scrambled up, Inuyasha landed in front of the Jewel. “It does not matter any word will do!” Kaede yelled, as Inuyasha bent down to grab it smirking at Kagome as I groaned. “How can you say a word when you can’t even sit up?”
“Umm, err, umm?” She was right behind me when I grabbed her arm and made her look at me. She turned her gaze on me and then I pointed to my ears, then the floor. She looked at both and began to think. I then leaned over to her ear, and whispered “sit boy.” She looked at me again and smiled as we both turned to Inuyasha. I then held up three fingers, then two and then one just as the Jewel stopped in front of Inuyasha. “SIT BOY!!” We shouted. Inuyasha’s beads glowed and he went face down smacking into the wooden bridge’s slats.
I winced, knowing I would not use it a lot as I didn’t think it was right to do that to someone. Plus, that had to hurt, going face down to the floor! Kagome began to walk across the bridge to get the Jewel, glancing at Inuyasha, who was still facedown on the ground. “What do you know, it worked!” I grimaced again as I shook my head the black spots getting worse. “I don’t think we should use them too much, that’s got to hurt!” She stared at me, wide-eyed “But, he tried to hurt us!” My eyebrows furrowed as I looked at her. “No, he always hit the ground or enough to just touch you but he never hurt you, he was only trying to scare you in to giving up the Jewel.”
Kagome narrowed her eyes and put her hands on her hips. “Well, I do not care! If he misbehaves I will still use the word.” I sighed and shook my head. “Just get the Jewel before he does.” She snorted and continued along the bridge, picking up the Jewel and returning. By then, Inuyasha had gotten up and was trying to get the beads off his neck, but they flashed each time, stopping him. “What the heck is this thing?” I felt sorry for him, as I knew his freedom would be contained just like mine.
“I’m sorry Inuyasha; even ye lack the power to remove it!” I looked at Kaede as my ears drooped and my hand came up to the beads hidden under my coat. Even as I wavered on my feet, I looked back at Inuyasha. “We will see about that!” Inuyasha pointed a finger up at Kaede in anger. “If you weren’t so old I would come up there and finish you off, if you did not look half dead already!” Kagome had reached my side and then had turned around to face Inuyasha again; I blinked my eyes the blackness gaining strength in the corners of my eyes.
“The word, please!” Kagome stood there as though she was proud of being able to control a half-demon, and then raised an arm. “Sit Boy!” and down went Inuyasha, through the bridge and down towards the water. I watched sadly and took a step towards Kaede. “Well then, shall we head home?” Suddenly, the world tilted. “Shade!” Everything disappeared into darkness.
---------------------------------------------
Several hours later…
I woke up to the sound of banging, to people mending their homes and the scuffling of the people who were near me. “how’s that? Perhaps a bit more orgent on your belly?” My eyes opened to Kaede’s voice and I sat up, grimacing. I then got up unsteadily onto my feet and went over to the door separating the bedroom from the main room. Finally getting there, I listened “I noticed you’re rebuilding the houses wrecked by mistress centipede, what a pain.” I took a breath reassured by Kagome’s voice and got ready to walk to the next room “Pain yes, and it’s just beginning. Now that the Sacred Shikon no Tama is back among us, far worse than mistress centipede will come to claim it!”
I then began to walk through the doorway “Worse than yesterday?” “And not just Demons, there are Humans, whose hearts are more evil still. Only the Jewel has the power to make real their petty grasping ambitions!” “You mean the Jewel that the creature ate?” I asked. They all stared at me “Shade, you’re awake!” I nodded my head at Kagome and then looked at the others, grimacing at the look Kaede gave me. “You know how much I hate lying down.” Her eyes shut and my eyes widened as everyone looked at me weirdly. “Lie Girl,” and down I went ~THUMP~ “Shit” I was face down on the floor and Kaede came over as I lay there twitching.
Soon I could lift my head and look at Inuyasha “I know what you going through. It hurts like a son of a bitch.” My head fell back to the floor with a thump as I felt Kaede change the bandages on my back. “Hey Kaede?” sounds of shifting and then a stinging sensation as the ointment was put on my back “Yes, Kagome?” More shifting sounds as the strips were layered on my back. “If she has a subdue necklace on, why can’t I see it?” even more shifting and then I felt my collar turned down to show the necklace “Why are all the sharp teeth facing inwards?” the necklace was let go of and hands went over my back checking the position on the bandages “That is because her necklace is stronger than ye’s Inuyasha and has more power as well.” I lifted my head to look at Kagome “Why is that?” I sighed and sat up when Kaede patted my shoulder “It’s because when I appeared a week back I was not trusted at all by the villagers and it took them most of the week to come to terms a half-demon was among them!”
I had got up at this point and was looking outside of the door, my eyes sharp. I looked at them all. “I’m going for a wash” I then went over to my pack, which no one had noticed was in the corner, and picked it up. Kagome noticed the making of the bag and looked at me. “Hey wait that bag...” I looked at her and then turned and walked away. “Wait until I have calmed down, later!” I then stormed off, my emotions in turmoil as I went towards the river hearing Kagome beginning to question Inuyasha as I walked out of sight “So why are you…”
I soon stopped and jumped up the branches of a tree and tied the bag up there. I was near to the river, so I ran along the branches until I could see it and the well, which was nearby. I then settled down, keeping my senses open as I fell in to a light sleep. I woke up at dawn and was watching the peaceful scenery for once, when I heard sounds of struggling across the clearing from the direction of the village. Standing up, I jumped from branch to branch until I saw where the struggle was, and landed on the tree above. It was Kagome! Several bandits were mishandling her and were taking her to their hideout, tied up!
I followed, hidden, and watched as they went in. I then dropped to the grassy floor and looked into the building. Kagome was being pushed around by the guys. No one noticed me as I slipped in among them, making my way to her. All stopped as they held Kagome between them, looking the direction of the massive creature in the shadows. “Hey boss, we caught the girl just like we said we would!” Kagome shook them off and while she was telling them off, I snuck up towards her.
“Hand over the Jewel right now!” Both of us looked over at the massive humanoid figure that had gotten up and was moving towards us. I reached out and grabbed her sleeve. She looked back and instantly relaxed when she realised that it was only me. Then they grabbed her again, smirking. “Hey boss, try to take it off in one swing, like a dandelion,” they cheered, as the massive human came up in front of us, then cut down the man holding Kagome on the right. I pulled her backwards as everyone stared horrified at the sight of there dead brother in arms.
“Hey boss, what you do that for?” Kagome and I continued to run, hoping we would get out before he caught us and cut us up into strips. “Thanks for coming.” I looked at her. “You didn’t think I would leave you behind, did you? Move!” I shoved her out the way as I brought out my sword that had been in my scabbard and blocked his sudden attack with my own sword. “Give me the Jewel!” I looked over my shoulder at Kagome and saw that she had got the men moving to try and find a way out of the place. I gritted my teeth as he pressed down harder.
“Kagome, throw the Jewel out the blocked door, he will go for it!” I felt myself fall to one knee as the human pressed harder. Sweat ran down my face as my wounds started to protest against the strain I was putting on them. Suddenly, he let up and went after Kagome. I immediately got up and ran after him, situating myself in front of him again as he came towards us. “The Jewel! Give it to me!” I gritted my teeth and brought up my sword to meet his once again. I closed my eyes, feeling Kagome holding on to me for strength, when suddenly a crash of the wall breaking could be heard. I looked up at Inuyasha who had come through the wall, breaking the blade.
“Let go, Kagome.” She let go as I ran towards the hole in the wall, jumping up into the trees and running through the branches until I came to the river again. I settled down in an enclosed area and took of my leather jacket and looked at my wounds when I heard the cries of a child and ran out to the river, where he was drowning. I dove straight into the river swam as fast as I could after the child.
I eventually caught up to the kid and held him close to my chest as I swam to the shore. “Where’s the Jewel?” I looked up from where I was sitting on the edge of the river and looked at Kagome, bewildered as she huffed and turned away from Inuyasha. “Jewel?” She pointed to her neck as a response. Relieved, I got up and walked back to where my jacket was and was about to put it on when I saw flashes of light over the top of the trees. Suddenly, a crow head came at me! Horrified I shut my eyes and swiped at it, my face twisted in disgust. When I opened my eyes, the head was gone and on the ground in front of me was a shining shard.
I kneeled down, picking it up and stared, startled at the piece of the Scared Jewel glowing in my hand! I stood up, still looking at it when I heard Inuyasha and Kagome approach me. “Kagome?” I asked. She looked at me “What?” She asked. “Who’s idea was it to shoot straight at the Jewel?” I asked. She blinked in confusion. “Mine?” I gritted my teeth, my eyes narrowed in a glare. “Oh very good Kagome, what a way to use your head!” She took a step back as she gazed at me. “What are you on about?” My lips drew back in a snarl. “What am I on about? What am I ON ABOUT? I am about you, shooting that bloody arrow and shattering the Jewel into millions of pieces! That’s what I am talking about! Oh what a way to use your head, girl. Aim the arrow and shot it straight in to the bloody Jewel.”
I held out my hand, panting after that long rant. She nervously held out her hand and I dropped the shard of the Jewel into her awaiting palm. “I hope you are happy, because I am furious!” I turned away “What is that?” I frowned back at Inuyasha “A shard of the Shikon Jewel.” He looked at me and then at the Jewel as he stood there, shocked. “What… What did YOU SAY?” I walked away from Inuyasha, who was going absolutely bananas. ‘I know how you feel Inuyasha,’ I thought, as I walked out of the clearing to the village.
