Chapter 3

I don't own it...

The woman stayed behind him the entire day much to Sesshomaru’s relief. There was something about her that threatened to crack his composure. The composure he had built the day his mother died, the day he let himself feel for the last time. The arranged marriage between her and Inutashio was a painful part of him. It was hard as a child knowing that he wasn’t wanted only necessary. That’s why Inuyasha… Sesshomaru let the memories fade. “See this is what she’s doing to me and I’ve only known her a day!” he hissed reaching out with his hearing to see what she spoke to his charge about.

“So where you come from you’re a warrior? Like a priestess?”

Istra laughed “ No not like a priestess, just like a warrior, you know, I can go get married and I don’t have an ounce of holy power. I’m just very good at fighting and I’m very strong.”

Sesshomaru heard Rin’s gasp of surprise. “So your like Lord Sesshomaru?”

Istra giggled. “Not exactly like your lord, but close, I’m not a demon you see.”

“But you’re not human like me either.” Rin replied with absolute sincerity.

Sesshomaru held his breath focusing all his attention on the conversation a good twenty feet behind him.

“No, no I’m not human Rin, that was smart of you to notice.” Istra praised.

Smirking, Sesshomaru waited for the woman’s explanation. Silence met his anticipation as the two fell silent. ‘Could Rin, the queen of asking questions, really be satisfied with that answer?’ He fought not to turn around.

“If you want to know you can just ask.” Istra’s soft voice came from his left. That was the second time she had caught him unaware. It wasn’t acceptable.

Deciding to ignore her question, Sesshomaru kept walking looking carefully at the path.

“I know you were listening.” Istra leaned her shoulder into his playfully.

Sesshomaru shuddered as she made contact with stub of his left arm. It didn’t seem to phase her, however, as she looked up at him with a teasing smile.

“I do not care what you are wench, just so long as you stay in your place.”

Istra grinned. “Liar.” She whispered. Before falling back to walk with Rin.

Sesshomaru shook his head, ‘Insanity, the woman must be insane. That was why he didn’t feel like destroying her because of her insult. That had to be the reason.’

As night fell Sesshomaru watched as Rin happily ate the cured meat Istra provided. Wondering, for the first time, if maybe he was too hard on the little girl. Fighting the thought away he turned to glare at Istra. Perhaps she had bespelled him, he nodded mentally, that would explain why he was thinking the way he was. Anger rolled over him like an old friend, here was an emotion he understood, one he could handle.

Noticing the malice drifting from Sesshomaru, Istra looked up from where she was kneeling rolling out the bedding for the girl. Lifting one burnt honey eyebrow she met his stare.

“Is there something amiss my lord?” she asked when neither of them looked away.

Sesshomaru moved in a flash, appearing before her almost faster than her eyes could follow. “You witch, you’ve put a hex on me. I demand you take it off immediately.” He growled, unmindful of the little girl watching the confrontation, her face torn between siding with her lord and her new friend.

Istra grabbed Sesshomaru’s arm pulling him back toward the woods with more strength that he would of given her credit for. “We’ll be right back Rin, don’t worry, just eat your meal.” Istra smiled.

Growling, Sesshomaru tried to wrench his arm away only to be surprised further when Istra retained her hold.

Her green eyes swirling with deadly emotions she caught his golden gaze as she pulled him back out of sight of the girl.

“What hex do you speak of my lord?” she demanded turning on him.

“The one that you cast on me to make me feel these things.” Sesshomaru yanked his arm away more forcefully smirking when he broke her hold.

Istra laughed, actually laughed as she looked at him. “There is no spell on you of my doing oh great lord.” She tilted her head to the side. “These feelings are all your own, I cannot take the blame for them.”

Red bled into the gold of Sesshomaru’s eyes. “Dare you lie to me?”

Shaking her head Istra’s laughter faded yet remained in her eyes. “No, my lord I’m not lying. Feelings are not such a bad thing you know.”

Sesshomaru’s hand lashed out to circle her neck his claws digging into the recently healed flesh. A green haze seeping from the tips of his claws as poison dripped into her blood stream.

“Let me go.” She demanded her own eyes steeling over as she circled his wrist.

“I, Sesshomaru have had enough of your games it is time for you to die.”

Istra actually sighed. “I think not my lord.” Unmindful of his poison or his threat she rolled her eyes. “Just let me know when you’re done, because I would very much like to go hunt something before complete dark.”

“My poison will kill you wench.”

“Are you hungry? Do you get cranky when you’ve not eaten? Because I can find more food for you if you want,” she frowned in thought as Sesshomaru’s claws sunk deeper. “How about deer? I saw some a little while ago.”

“Why isn’t this killing you?”

Istra shrugged. “I’m immune to your poison my lord, not that poison would kill me anyway, it just makes me heal at a slower rate and hurts like the dickens.”

Beneath his claws he could feel the skin of her slender neck begin to knit itself together. Meeting his eyes again she sighed. “Alright this is getting really old poodle man, I’m leaving. Do you want anything or not?” She stepped back catching his hand and deftly removing his claws.

Sesshomaru glared at her in confusion. Istra just waved a hand in frustration in his general direction and turned heading further into the woods. “I’ll be back soon, I’ll bring you deer I guess. Not that you’d tell me what you wanted anyway.” She muttered leaving Sesshomaru to stare after her.
