Chapter Three: Your future - My past

Inuyasha took two weeks off and was inseparable from his wife and pup. Shippo took over Inuyasha classes leaving him with a full days work. Every night after Shippo came home he would fall asleep at his window watching Chiyoko’s room for any odd movements.

The training school was closed on Sunday’s and so Shippo sat by his window that afternoon and watched Chiyoko make her first trip down the well with her parents.

“Haruki, today is the day my life changes forever.”

Haruki knew what Shippo was referring to. Placing his plate in the sink Haruki asked a question he had wondered about since the day he heard Shippo make his vow “Do you regret it?”

“Not really” Shippo sat down at the table and Haruki followed suite. “When I made the vow there was something in me that said ‘fate needed me to do it’ and then as we grow older I started to fall in love with her. I know everything I’ve been through was the way it should have been. What I regret is hurting the people I had to hurt in order fulfill my fate, including myself.”

Shippo took his wallet out of his pants and opened it up. He handed it to Haruki as he continued “But it was real and that’s all that matters.”

Haruki looked down at an old picture of Chiyoko and Shippo. It was faded and looked as if any moment it would turn to dust. Regardless of how old the picture was you could still see the two people in it belonged together. ‘Indeed it was fate’ Haruki thought as he handed back Shippo’s wallet. Hearing a knock on the door Shippo stood up and answered it.

Inuyasha stood at the door with a deathly look in his eyes “You son of a bitch!”

Shippo waved Inuyasha into his house and closed the door. “I guess that’s fair, my mother was a fox. Have a seat.”

“I’d rather stand” Inuyasha growled. The two stared at each other intensely. “You know all this time and acted like if everything was fine.”

Shippo didn’t bother playing dumb “Yeah”

“How could you Shippo? Do you have any idea what that vow meant?”

“At the time I made it I didn’t fully understand the depth of it, but yes, I comprehend the meaning of it.”

Inuyasha sat down and tried to think things out. Coming to a realization he looked to Shippo again “This is the reason you didn’t want any one to know you was here, isn’t it?”

Shippo hesitated before answering, how much should he tell Inuyasha? “It’s part of the reason. There is still a lot I can’t tell you yet. What I can say is that I’m sorry I put you in this position. I never meant for things to be this way.”

Inuyasha’s heart was softened by Shippo’s words. “Why didn’t you just wait and ask me when you were older?”

Shippo was as honest as he could be “Deep down inside I wanted her to be mine and I couldn’t risk you saying no.”

“Why would you think I would say no to you?”

“Think about it Inuyasha, back then we didn’t have the relationship we have now. You always wanted to beat me up. It didn’t matter how much I looked up to you, everything I did annoyed you. It wasn’t until you had kids that you started treating me right, and by then it was already too late.”

Inuyasha felt bad, he had pushed Shippo into doing it without even realizing it.

“Shippo, it would have been an honor to have you as part of my family. And I’m sorry I treated you so badly, I’ve always had a hard time showing my feelings in the right way. I’m still surprised Kagome married me.”

“Me too.” The two shared a small chuckle.

There was a deafening silence that filled the air. ‘What now?’ wondered Shippo. ‘Where is all of this going? How will this all end?’

Inuyasha interrupted his thoughts “How do you feel about Chiyoko now?”

“As of right now she’s too young for me to want her as my mate, but I’ve always loved her and always will.”

Inuyasha stood up and said two words before walking out of the house “I understand.”

Haruki got up from the table and went to Shippo “Well, that wasn’t so bad.”

“No, it wasn’t.”

Inuyasha continued to work for Shippo. Although things between the two weren’t the same anymore, not much changed. Inuyasha started working day shift while the kids were in school and Shippo would work nights. They didn’t see each other often but when they did it was as if nothing ever happen. Inuyasha knew during the day Shippo would check up on Chiyoko. There had even been times when he would sense Shippo by the well making sure Chiyoko got home Ok at night too.

As time want by neither ever said anything about the situation. Shippo knew Inuyasha didn’t feel threatened by him simply making sure Chiyoko was alright, as long as he kept his distance. Shippo was always very low-key. He knew Chiyoko didn’t have a youkai sense of smell and often would transform into an animal to watch her by the well. During the day he would go about his day as normal but made sure to take any routes that passed by her way.

One day as Shippo passed by the school yard he saw Chiyoko playing four square with her friends. She was six years old at the time and wore her sliver and black hair in two pigtails. Everything had seemed to be going ok until he heard a little boy taunting her.

“Hey grandma, aren’t you to old to be playing. Why don’t you just get back in your wheelchair and roll home.”

Chiyoko’s smile had vanished. Putting her hand on her hip she rolled her eyes at him and spoke “Your so stupid and if your going to make fun of me, PLEASE come up with something better then grandma. That joke is getting so old.” Chiyoko went back to playing with her friends. Shippo was about to walk away when at the corner of his eye he saw the little boy reach in his pocket and throw something.

A small rock hit Chiyoko on the side of her head. It had hit her so hard she feel to the floor. To everyone’s surprise she didn’t cry, in fact, she simply stood up walked over to the boy and in a low voice said “You’re lucky my mother says I can’t kill people in this time, other wise your heart would be in my hands right now!” She brought her hand up to his chest and effortlessly clawed five wholes into his shirt by merely touching it. With that said she walked to the nurses’ office.

Upon Chiyoko leaving the boy called her a freak and said he would get her for putting wholes in his shirt. Shippo sat across the street and watched as the boy gather rocks into his pockets. Shippo could tell that even as a small child Chiyoko could handle herself. If this boy throw those rocks at her two things could happen, either she would get badly hurt or worst she would actually kill him. It would be easy for her to kill him with no doubt. By time Chiyoko was this age Shippo know she was well trained and had killed many smaller youkais’. Even the weakest youkai was harder to kill then a human.

Shippo waited until school was out and had transformed into a little boy around the same age. When Shippo saw the little boy reach into his pocket he grabbed his arm.

“Hey, I saw what you did earlier. That was so cool. Are you going to throw some more rocks at that freak?”

“Yeah, you want to help?”

“Sure. I know where some really good size rocks are. Come with me.” Shippo lead the young boy behind one of the stair wells where no one went.

Using his fox magic Shippo rolled a small pebble at the entrance and it grow into a wall trapping the little boy. As the young boy turned and looked at the wall that seemed to come out of nowhere, Shippo tossed a paper doll onto the floor. It grew into an ugly old lady.

“WENCH” Shippo shouted out grabbing the boys’ attention. Using the doll as a puppet Shippo made the old lady speak.

“Do you know what I do to little boys who pick on girls?”

The two boys answered “no” at the same time.

“I turn them in to frogs! Ha…ha…ha…ha…haa”

Shippo saw the boy was scared but wanted to make sure the boy would never bother Chiyoko again. Shippo yelled to the woman “I’m not scared of you” just to make a point. The old lady pointed her boney finger at Shippo and he transformed into a frog.

The little boy started to cry “I promise I won’t bother anymore girls. Please don’t turn me into a frog!”

The old lady gave him a warning that if she ever saw him picking on a girl again she would come back and finish the job. When the wall was let down the little boy ran away as fast as he could. Shippo transformed back into his normal self and picked up the paper doll. Even though he was a fox demon he didn’t like tricking people like that. He felt bad for the boy but knew it was the only way he could stop him from picking on Chiyoko.

Shippo got back to the training school almost an hour later. “What took you so long?” Inuyasha asked heatedly. Shippo explained what happen and had to clam Inuyasha down before letting him go home. Inuyasha was furious with the little kid yet he was relieved that Shippo had taken care of it. Inuyasha knew if it had been left up to him the little boy would be in the hospital right now. It was the first time the two spoke about anything that had to do with Shippo looking over Chiyoko. Shippo was thankful that Inuyasha hadn’t said anything regarding it.

The only other time the two talked about anything in relation to the subject was a few years after. As they changed shifts Shippo had asked Inuyasha to come in a little earlier in the morning to change some of the signs. With an annoyed look on Inuyasha’s face he answered with a “Yes, oh great warrior.”

Shippo’s eyes shot open knowing what Inuyasha was referring to and why he was so upset. A small smile touched the corner of his lips “Would you rather I had let her get eaten by the bear demon?” he taunted.

“Don’t be ridiculous Shippo. Of course not!”

Shippo continued taking out the supplies he needed for his class as Inuyasha pouted in the corner of the room.

“It’s just that, that glory belongs to me. I’m the great warrior who defeated Naraku, not you. Why would anyone think you’re the great warrior anyways, you were too little to do any real harm even to a lizard demon, never the less Naraku. It’s probably because your full youkai and I’m a hanyou. Stupid Bear! I wish I had the chance to show him who the great warrior really was.” Curling his hand into a fist Inuyasha jabbed it through the air.

Hearing what Inuyasha was complaining about the realization of the matter hit Shippo “You’re not mad I protected Chiyoko, You’re mad that I was called a great warrior because of Naraku’s destruction.” He broke out in laughter.

“What’s so funny Shippo?”

“YOU…and here I always thought…” the words melted in his mouth and he just shook his head.

The next morning they both came in about an hour early. They worked together taking down and putting up all the signs. It didn’t take long at all and before they knew it they where done. As they entered the office Shippo transformed back into his normal self. The office was the only place he would do that and only if the school was closed.

“Well, we have half an hour until we open. What should we do?” Inuyasha asked.

“I don’t know about you, but I have to write some checks to pay for this school to stay open.”

Inuyasha sat down on the couch across from Shippo’s desk. “You know Shippo I’m real proud of you. You really made a good life for your self. Your nothing like that little brat you use to be.”

Shippo looked up at Inuyasha from his paper work “It must be weird traveling back and forth and seeing me both grown and as a child.”

“I guess. I never really think about it though. To me no matter what time we’re in your kind of my best friend.” It was the last thing Shippo would have ever thought Inuyasha would say.

This made things even harder. Although Shippo had always view Inuyasha in that manner he didn’t think Inuyasha felt the same. “I thought Miroku was your best friend?”

“I don’t know, I guess he was at first. It’s just that we spend so much time together in both times that…” Inuyasha paused and then said something that seemed to come from nowhere “Why don’t you mate with Rei, then things between us don’t have to change.” Inuyasha looked at Shippo with hope in his eyes.

“I can’t say the thought has never crossed my mind Inuyasha, but truth is my heart won’t let me.”

Shippo’s statement only made Inuyasha mad “Well, then you’re a stupid fool! You know what will happen don’t you. You must be retarded for making a vow to the death. All you have to do is mate with Rei and this will all be over. There will be no need for us to fight.”

With out hesitation Shippo stood up, slammed his hands on his desk and barked out his next words “May I remind you, I’ve already done the past, and I a sure you it won’t be that easy. I’ve had to live without Chiyoko in my life for over five hundred years because of YOU. You remember what it felt like when you Thought you would have to wait that long to see Kagome again. Well, that’s the feeling I’ve had to live with all this time. You never even let her come back through the well even once so I could say good bye.” Softening his tone he continued “I may not be able to doing anything now, but you will not tell me how this is going to end. Now if you will excuse me I have to drop this in the mail box and make sure Chiyoko gets to school safely. And you have a class to tend to.” He hadn’t meant to reveal anything about the past or actually tell Inuyasha that he made sure Chiyoko got too school safe but it was too late to try and take it back.

Watching Shippo gather his stuff and leave Inuyasha was silent. After all what could he say? He was still in shock about what he had heard. He vividly remembered the feeling Shippo mentioned. Being in hell would have felt like heaven compared to not having Kagome for any amount of time. And that’s what Shippo had to endure. Even worse it was because of him Shippo had to go though it.

Speaking out loud to himself Inuyasha tried to figure out what might of happen. “Does that mean I’m going to face a child Shippo in battle? It couldn’t be, because if I did then Shippo wouldn’t be alive. Shippo must have forfeited at some point. But then why wouldn’t I let her back through the well?... She must of fell in love and got married to some guy from her time. That would have forced Shippo to give up claim and he could be blaming me for letting it happen. Telling her not to go though the well was probably to protect him from getting his feelings hurt.”

Not knowing what had happened to make Shippo go through life the way he had, upset Inuyasha. What he did know was that anything would be better then him having to kill Shippo in a fight over his daughter. Especially being that Shippo was his best friend. Nothing would have made Inuyasha happier then to see Shippo marry his daughter, but he knew it just wasn’t possible. That’s when it hit him, he would speak to Myoga.
