Chapter 3
The fire burned low, and he could just make out Kagome‘s relaxed features. Inuyasha’s gaze drifted over
his sleeping companions. They would begin traveling again tomorrow. Inuyasha hated being idle for too
long. But Kagome had begged for an extended break; he couldn’t really argue, although… a week or so was
all he could stand, but the situation was beginning to wear him down as well.
As he sat there in the tree, Inuyasha was mentally trying to go over all their losses in is head…he hated to think about it, but nearly a quarter of the village had perished. Something had to be done, but what? He
had been having this very strange feeling lately…something was wrong. Very wrong. It almost seemed
intentional…the drought, the failed crops…it seemed as if they were being starved on purpose. But that was
impossible! Wasn’t it? A demon might have that power, but things have been getting better.
There was a period of time when demons would attack a human village just for the sport of it. And of
course the humans would retaliate…for awhile many of the rivers would run red with blood. Recently,
however, both sides became weary of the bloodshed and came to an agreement.
There were laws now that allowed humans and demons to coexist somewhat peacefully. Surprisingly,
and strangely enough, it was actually Sesshoumaru who had called for a meeting of all the nobility amongst
the demon, and human clans. Inuyasha was in attendance…at Kagome’s insistence, of course.
Sesshoumaru’s views on humans had altered in the years since he took Rin as his ward. However, at that
very same meeting, he had made it abundantly clear that he had no sympathy for either humans or demons.
Tolerate, yes. Empathy. No.
His mind wondered back to the conversation he had with Kagome earlier that evening. He didn’t like the
way Kagome was avoiding his questions. At one point she even refused to look at him. It hurt that she
wouldn’t let him in, he cared deeply for her. In fact, he didn’t want to admit how deep those feeling ran. He
was only just beginning to realize how much in love with her he was. Of course he knew the possibility that
he was going to fall in love with her when she pulled that damn arrow from his chest.
Over the last two years, the group had become even closer…more of a family really. Didn’t Kagome
know that any pain she held in would be shared with the group?
He sighed and shook his head. They would talk to the leader of the next village, and he would make
Kagome listen. There WAS something wrong, and he was determined to find out what IT was. There were
consequences for going against the treaty. And someone was responsible.
The next morning, Kagome awoke before the rest of companions. She wanted to bathe before they had to
leave, because she knew it would be awhile before she would get the chance to bathe again once they leave
the village.
She grabbed her supplies and headed for the waterfall.
Golden eyes watched as Kagome left the safety of the village. Now, of course, you know Inuyasha would
not let her out of his sight. He followed her and hid behind a tree. He told himself he would not look, but he
was only a man, after all. He peeked around the tree.
Kagome was thigh deep in the water, standing with arms at her side, water pouring over her from the
waterfall.
Inuyasha watched in a daze. The water blurred Kagome’s features like an impressionists painting. But he
could still see the muscles in her back, and arms. His mind slipped back to when they first met. He
remembered thinking how small she was. In five years she grew roughly five inches, and gained maybe ten
pounds, of course, now…well, he didn’t want to think of the problems going on in the village right now.
A wave a fierce protectiveness burned his gut. He would die before he let anyone hurt her.
He watched as she propped her foot on a rock, and began shaving her legs.
“Itai!” She gasped, as she brought her foot back under the water.
Inuyasha heard her gasp of pain. He knew he would probably get sat, but he didn’t care. He didn’t want
Kagome in pain.
“Kagome?!”
She spun around, nearly falling. Inuyasha stood on the bank. Their gazes locked. Kagome’s eyes
widened. Inuyasha squeezed his eyes shut waiting for the command, but it never came. He opened one eye
slowly, and found Kagome ducked down a little in the water. One eyebrow quirked, and a smirk on her
face. He opened both eyes.
“Oi! You okay?”
She smiled at his concern. “Yeah. I think I cut my foot, though.”
She swam over to where she had discarded her robe. Inuyasha followed. She looked up at him, and
reached out her arms. Inuyasha pulled her out of the water, and his breath caught in his throat. He’d seen
Kagome naked before, many times in fact. And most of them she didn’t know about. He mentally patted his
back. However, it was quite another thing to have a naked Kagome, dripping with water…standing less than
a foot in front of you. Quite distracting, really. Color rushed to his cheeks and he turned around to hide his
embarrassment.
“Why, Inuyasha, you are not getting shy on me now, are you?” She teased.
He swallowed when she placed her hand on his shoulder to steady herself as she raised her left leg. “You
know, it’s not as bad as I thought it would be, but it hurt like hell!”
He looked over his shoulder to see a little blood dripping on the grass. She stood with most of her weight
on her right leg, while Inuyasha grabbed her robe from the rock. He wrapped it around her shoulders , and
Kagome shrugged her arms into the sleeves. She smiled up at Inuyasha., and sat down on the rock. Inuyasha stood frozen.
“Inuyasha!” Kagome called, snapping her fingers.
He shook is head, and looked down at her on the rock. “Huh?”
“I said what’s the plan today?” She said, examining the cut on the heel of her foot.
He tore off a piece of his undershirt, and kneeled beside Kagome. “I really want us to go see the man in the next village…if he knows about the well…also we have to find out what is causing this damn draught…”
“I know.” Kagome sighed in resignation.
He looked up at her with a frown. “What, you’re not going to argue?”
She smirked. “Has it ever done me an ounce of good?”
They laughed. Inuyasha wrapped the cloth around Kagome’s wound. When the bandage was secured, he pulled her on his back and they headed back to the village.
