Scars of the Past

Inuyasha groaned as the morning sun peaked through the window of the hut, its harsh glare stirring him from his sleep. Slowly he sat up, his body aching under the strain and rubbed his eyes.

“Good morning Inuyasha.” Said Sango leaning against the doorway

Startled Inuyasha jumped to his feet, only to fall on his knees because of the sharp pain that shot through his body. Seeing him in pain, Sango went to his side to see if he was alright.

“Inuyasha! I’m so sorry I startled you. Are you alright?”

“I’m…fine.” He managed to say through gritted teeth.

Sango put one of his arms over her shoulders and put and arm around his waist attempting to help him up. When she did she could feel that his bandages were wet with blood. (He must have reopened a wound.) Sango gently sat him back down, and began to remove his shirt.

“S-Sango, what are you doing!?” Inuyasha said a light blush on his face

“One of your wounds has reopened Inuyasha. I need to tend to it.”

“Kaede can do that.”

“She won’t be here until late afternoon and by then your wound might get worse.”

Inuyasha sighed in defeat and began to remove his shirt with the help of Sango. Once his shirt was removed, Sango got a partial view of his well toned chest, including the many scars that covered it.

(So many scars… How far do they go I wonder?) She thought staring at them.

“Sango, is something wrong?”

“Huh? Oh, uh, no Inuyasha I was just looking to see if you were bleeding anywhere else.” She said snapping out of her thoughts.

Removing the bandages she noticed more and more scars covering his chest and back, some looking like they were made by teeth and claws, others made by swords and other weapons. Stopping for a moment, Sango ran her hands over his chest, feeling the scars that peppered it. Some felt rough, like gravel and others felt as smooth as silk. As she continued her administrations, Sango found herself becoming lost in his body as emotions long forgotten began to stir. She continued her exploration of his chest until Inuyashas removed her hands and held them in his own.

“Sango…” she heard Inuyasha say faintly.

He brought his had to her chin lifted her head till their eyes met. Sango could see so much emotion in them, love, understanding, sorrow, compassion and heartache; and all of them were for her. Slowly he lowered his head until she could feel his breath slow and steady, while hers was caught in her throat. A second later, she felt his lips press against hers in a kiss that nearly stopped her heart. Breaking the kiss Inuyasha began to remove her shirt planting kisses along her neck doing so, going lower and lower…

“SANGO!” Inuyasha yelled snapping her out of her trance.

“Huh?”

“Are you feeling alright? As soon as you started to remove my bandages you faded out for a little bit.”

“Oh, uh, I’m just a little tired that’s all.” Sango said lightly blushing and resumed un-bandaging his wounds.

Once she got a full view of the wound she winced. Four deep gashes were across his side but thankfully they were not deep enough to hit anything vital. Blood was oozing from them and as Sango fought back a bout of nausea she examined the wounds. From what she could see, there was a thin yellow film around the edges of the gashes, proving that his wounds were infected.

Retrieving some of the herbs Kagome had left behind; Sango crushed them into a powder and added some water creating a paste which she applied to the infected areas. After the bleeding stopped she re-bandaged his wounds.

“Uh, thanks.” Inuyasha said hesitantly

Sango waved a hand dismissively. “It alright. After all, I’m the one who startled you. Oh! By the way, I brought you breakfast.”

Handing Inuyasha his meal, they both ate in silence. As they ate Sango would often glance at Inuyasha who was too focused on devouring his meal to notice.

(I wonder why I haven’t seen his scars before. I’ve seen him shirtless a few times and not seen a thing.)

“So, how did you guys defeat Goshinki?” Inuyahsa said between mouthfuls.

Sango looked surprised at Inuyashas question. “Inuyasha, don’t you remember? You killed him.”

Inuyasha stopped in the middle of his feeding frenzy and stared at Sango, mouth agape.

“What? That’s impossible! After tetsuiga broke he tossed me aside and the last thing I remember before unconsciousness is him lumbering towards the rest of you.”

“You transformed into… something and defeated Goshinki with two swipes of your claws, Inuyasha. There was nothing he could have done to stop you. Don’t you remember?”

“I don’t know. I remember something, but it felt like a dream. I saw Goshinki’s body on the ground and a look of terror on your faces. And pain. I remember pain. Not the pain from my wounds, this was different. It felt like I was being torn apart inside. That’s all I remember.”

“Perhaps it would be best if you didn’t Inuyasha.” Said Kaede as she walked through the doorway. “From what the others told me, you became a feral version of yourself. I could not imagine it being very pleasant for any of you but you are back to normal and that’s all that matters.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right Kaede.”

“So tell me, how are you two feeling?”

“I am feeling better but Inuyasha tore open some of his wounds again. I … ah… startled him.” Sango said sheepishly. “I did manage to re-bandage him before you came though.”

“I see. Well then Inuyasha, let me see Sangos patchwork.”

Kaede examined Inuyashas bandages and could tell that they were well wrapped. Hastily wrapped but still a good job.

“You did very well Sango. I can see a few spots were the wounds could use a little more padding but other than that, you did well. Perhaps even better that Kagome.”

“It’s a must for slayers to have at least some experience treating wounds. Many slayers would have lost their lives if it weren’t for their knowledge of herbs.”

“Well, I am glad to see someone other that Kagome knows how to treat wounds. It means less work for me.” Kaede said with a chuckle. “Now for you Sango.”

Hearing this Inuyasha got u and left to give them some privacy. Walking along the edge of the forest; Inuyasha thought of Sangos strange behavior.

(Why is she acting so odd? One minute she’s removing my bandages and next thing I know she’s feeling me up. Could it be the demons kiss? Myoga did say that their have been unusual occurrences with the demons kiss, but how can I be sure? Bah, damn that flea! Where is he when I really need him?)

“Well Sango it seems that Inuyasha is not the only one who has torn open old wounds.”

“How can that be? I’ve barley done anything at all!”

“Well what ever you have done is too much. You may be a fast healer but you are not a through one. What has healed can easily be undone with too much activity. You are to remain in or near the hut for a few days. I will come by with meals.”

“That reminds me. You weren’t supposed to come until the afternoon. How come you came so early?”

“Well, I usually treat Miroku at this time but he insisted that he did not require my treatment anymore. So he and I made our way here.”

“Both of you? Then were is he?”

“Half way he said he forgot something for you and went back.”

“Something for me? I wonder what it is.”

“I am sure we will find out soon-”

“Hello Sango! How are you feeling?” Said Miroku barging in.

“-enough”

“Ack! Miroku get out of here!!!” Sango said covering her front.

“M-my deepest apologies Sango.” Said Miroku blushing “I-I did not know you were undressed.”

“GET OUT!!!”

Instead of retreating like he should have, Miroku merely stood there with an idiotic grin on his face until a clawed hand shot through the doorway and yanked Miroku out of the hut.

“Idiot! Didn’t you hear me say she was in there changing?” Inuyahsa said growling
“All I heard you say was that she was in there.”

“You mean that’s all you wanted to hear.”

Miroku was about to object when Sango stepped out of the hut and glared at Miroku.

“Where did you get the idea that you could just barge in uninvited?”

“As I said before, my deepest apologies about that but I have something for you and wanted to give it to you right away.”

“And what would that be?”

“This.” Miroku said bringing out a small jug of sake and two cups.

“I heard you were still in pain and thought I could bring something to take the edge off.”

“Goodnight Miroku.”

“Sleep well and perhaps you and I can try that sake tomorrow.”

“Perhaps. Goodnight.”

Ever since Miroku untimely interruption of treating Sangos wounds, she was sure to keep him at a comfortable distance, often placing Inuyasha in between them. Sango had managed to resist knocking him over the head due to Kaedes warning that she might re open the wounds and that Kaede would not dress them again, but vowed that she would find another way to punish him.

“Finally.” Said Sango breathing a sigh of relief. “I was beginning to think I would have to throw him out to make him leave.”

*chuckle* “I’m surprised you didn’t knock him unconscious, if not a little disappointed. He had it coming”

“Yeah, well you can thank Kaede for that.” Sango said looking out the window.

“Well, now that Miroku and Kaede have gone back to the village, care to have a drink with me Inuyasha?” she said offering him a cup.

“I thought you and Miroku were going to have that.”

“I like to drink with pleasurable company, not those that would like to have pleasure with the company.”

Inuyasha merely chuckled and took the cup she was offering. Pouring each a modest amount, Inuyasha put down the sake and raised his cup in a toast.

“To the healing process. May it be quick so that proper punishment may find that lecherous monk.” He said with a wink

Sango laughed and clinked her cup with his and they both drank. As they both continued to drink they talk about their current predicament, what they thought they should do next and how to deal with Narakus newfound power with Kagomes half of the jewel.

“So did Kikyo explain why she took Kagomes half?”

“Yeah, she said that once Naraku had the whole jewel, she would banish it to hell, him along with it.”

“It sounds pretty risky. Do you think you can trust her?”

“I… don’t know. I once thought so but now I’m not so sure.”

“I know how you feel. When we met Kohaku in the village… all the dead villagers and their blood on Kohakus…” Sango could not finish. She attempted to hold back the tears but failed as they began to run down her cheek.

“…Kohaku…” she whispered and covered her face with her hands, weeping.

Inuyasha slightly taken aback at Sangos sudden emotional shift, sat down next to her and not knowing what else to do, put his arm around her shoulders.

“Sango, I don’t know what to say. I am sorry that Naraku controls Kohaku and I am sure that we will find a way to free him from Naraku.”

“Thank you Inuyasha. It is comforting to hear you say that. Heh, you must think of me as pretty weak for breaking down like this.”

“What? No, not in the least. Actually I’m a little envious of your strong relationship with your brother. Sesshomaru and I could never have such a connection.”

“That’s a shame. You know, we weren’t always so close. Actually, when we were younger, we were the bitterest rivals you would have ever seen.”

“Really? Please tell me more.”

Occasionally drinking some sake, Sango continued to tell Inuyasha of her early childhood with her brother. The fights they would get into, the tricks they would play on the other slayers and each other, even the time when Sango rescued Kohaku from being eaten by a demon and from then on acted nice towards each other all the while Inuyasha listened intently, sometimes laughing at the mischief she would get into. By the time she finished the sake was gone and it was late in the night.

“Wow, would you look at that.” Said a slightly drunk Sango. “The sakes gone. That went really fasht.”

“Actually Sango we have been talking for over five hours now. The moon is already high in the sky.”

“Oh...*hic* then I guessh we’d better bed down for the night.” she said moving towards her mat

“Goodnight Sango.” He said and closed his eyes. Before he could fall asleep however he felt Sangos shadow over him. “Something wrong?” he said his eyes still closed

“I don’t know if you noticed but its cold out tonight and we don’t have any firewood, so I was wondering if I could…well… shleep with you tonight.” She said meekly

Hearing that got his attention. He look up eyes wide open “W-what!?”

“Its cold out and I don’t want to freeze.”

(That’s funny, I don’t feel cold, but then again I never really felt the cold. Ugh, I’m so tired I can’t think straight. Fine I’ll let her sleep with me.) blushing slightly he gave a nod of approval and Sango put her bed sheets next to Inuyasha, laid down and moved up against him sharing his body heat. Just as he fell asleep Sango stealthily moved Inuyashas hand over her waist, making him hold her. Feeling as if everything was as it should be she drifted off to sleep.

“Inuyasha were surrounded!” shouted a familiar voice. Sango opened her eyes and saw Miroku standing ready for battle. Sango quickly looked around as saw that they were in a forest and it was full of demons (I have been here before, but when?) Her thoughts were soon interrupted as a demon attacked her. She easily dispatched it with a strike from her Hiraikotsu as well as four other demons heading towards her.

“Inuyasha, don’t kill Kohaku!”

Hearing her brother’s name she turned around to see tetsuiga in the ground and Inuyasha punching Kohaku. She attempted to stop him but her legs would not move. She saw Kohaku say something to Inuyasha and watched in horror as her brother thrusted his kusarigama in his back, trying to get the jewel shard out. As before, her body moves on its own and grabs her Hiraikotsu and throws it at tetsuiga, making it revert back to a katana and grabs it. She sees Kohaku retreating and, carrying tetsuiga, calls Kilala and rides off after him. Her vision fades and everything goes black.
Opening her eyes again, she sees that she is in a castle and holding tetsuiga and is offering it to someone behind a curtain. (I remember now.) Sango thought as the curtain was rolled up revealing someone dressed in baboon skin. (Naraku.) He suddenly attacks and Sango releases her wrist blades just in time to parry his blow. Sango managed to remove the baboon skin and sees that Naraku is the son of the Spider lord that forced Kohaku to kill everyone!

Out of nowhere Kilala comes and bites Naraku, which unleashes poisonous gas rendering Kilala immobile. Before Sango can do anything, Naraku retreats and Kohaku attacks, catching her off guard. Attempting to protect herself for his relentless attacks she is steadily getting more wounded and it is not long before she is on her hands and knees. Before Kohaku could deliver the final blow, he fell back and narrowly dodged Inuyashas attack. Sango looked up and saw Inuyasha standing next to her a look of concern on his face as he tried to help her up. (He’s not angry? Even after I stole his tetsuiga and almost gave it to his greatest enemy? Was I so immersed in my self pity that I didn’t notice his concern?) Before she could ask any more questions, her eyelids grew heavy and her world went dark.
