Fortunate Encounters

Chapter III: A Funny thing Happened on the Way to the Hot Spring

Four days later:

Arena awoke suddenly at dawn on the fourth day feeling full of life. She looked around her the hut and saw fresh food had been placed nearby. Fantastic! she was ravenous and needed to gain back her lifeforce. Arena ate everything in sight, changed into fresh clothes, and after getting a whiff of her hair and clothes she decided she would look for a spring to bathe in. She knew of one not too far in the woods, perhaps she might meet that strange demon again. He was cold and unfriendly, but there was something about his eyes that intrigued her. She shook her head to snap herself out of the reverie. Obviously he didn’t care about her enough to even thank her. She resolved to never think about him again.

“Silly Arena” she thought.

She found the spring that she had heard about and was quite pleased to see steam rising from it. It would be nice and warm, and the minerals would help her tired body get back its lifeforce. She slipped into the water and closed her eyes delighting in the warmth.

Arena was just about to drift off when she heard some chattering nearby. She immediately dove behind a rock, with just her eyes and nose poking out of the water. Her instincts were quick and alert, but she would much rather hide than fight in the nude. To her great surprise two young women came happily down to the spring. They both had black hair, the younger one gave a squel of delight when she saw the hot spring.

“oh Sango doesn’t it look lovely! I cannot wait to jump in.”

“is it a warm spring Kagome?” a little fox came running while tearing off his clothes. He jumped into the water with a splash.
Kagome suddenly stopped.

“Sango, I don’t think we are alone.”

“what? is it a demon?” Sango asked Kagome.

“no, I do not sense any sort of demonic aura” she said, “hello?? Is anyone here?”

Arena came slowly out from behind the rock. They did not look all that threatening to her.

“Hi, my name is Arena. Like yourselves I sought to take advantage of the warm spring so I could have a bath.”

“We are very pleased to meet you Arena. I am glad you are not a demon. We have had enough of demon slaying for the time being” Sango said.

“My name is Kagome, this is Sango, and this little fox is Shippo. Are you travelling all by yourself? It is not safe for anyone to travel alone in these woods, especially a young woman such as yourself.”

“I am all alone. I used to be a healer in a village, but they abandoned me. You said you were killing demons? are you a group of demon slayers?” Arena asked.

“I guess you could say that. Say, if you are a healer perhaps you could help us. Our friend Miroku has been badly wounded in the last fight” said Sango.

“I would be delighted, shall we go now and bathe later?”

“If you don’t mind” Sango was eager to help Miroku.

When they reached the camp Arena saw a strange looking creature with silver hair and fuzzy ears. Arena stopped.

“It is okay Arena, this is InuYasha, he is our friend” said Kagome.

“What sort of rabble did you drag home now, Kagome?” said InuYasha.

“She isn’t a rabble InuYasha, you are so rude sometimes! This is Arena, she is a healer and has come to help Miroku” Kagome glared at InuYasha.

Arena cautiously walked by this InuYasha, not trusting to turn her back to him, and went over to where the injured man Miroku lay. She could tell by just looking at him that he had a broken arm. The bone piece was sticking out through the skin.

“I can easily heal him, but you must promise me one thing.”

“What? Like we have to do anything you say!” InuYasha cried.

“Sit!” Kagome said and InuYasha for some reason Arena could not understand fell towards the ground with a huge crash.

“ohhhhhh…” he moaned.

“I’m sorry Arena, InuYasha doesn’t like strangers, just ignore him. What can we do for you?” said Kagome.

“First of all, Miroku is human right? That is good. I can heal humans much more easily than demons. I need you to promise to take care of me when I am done. Will you do that?”

“Of course, right Sango?” Sango nodded in response to Kagome, InuYasha was still nursing his hurt head.

Arena smiled and knelt beside Miroku, these new people were certainly more friendly than those she was used to back in the poor village. She took his arm in her hands and he cried out in pain.

“Do not worry, the pain will soon be over.” Before Miroku could wonder if that meant she was going to kill him. Arena whispered something very foreign sounding and a flash of light appeared that made everyone shield their eyes. Arena felt something odd rub against her leg and she had a puzzled expression as she once again fell to the ground.

“Well, Miroku is all better, look at that old lecher!” Sango came over and hit Miroku over the head with a stick. “Is that any way to treat the woman who just healed your arm.” Miroku looked sheepish, but grinned.

“That was amazing,” Kagome said to her, “but how on earth did you do that?” But before she could get an answer Arena was already fast asleep, breathing slowly and harshly. She knew it was too soon for her to have healed again, but it was just a human and besides that he was someone who needed her help. Her recovery time would be less with a human.
