~~~~~~~~~~Together Again~~~~~~~~~~
~~~Chapter 3~~~
And yet, despite their many differences, there was a very close bond between them, which brought them together again and again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Inuyasha jumped out of the well with Kagome in his arms only to land directly in front of Sesshoumaru. He quickly set Kagome down behind him, but she ignored it and joined him at his side. Kagome bowed her head slightly and smiled at the taiyoukai standing in front of her, a blush staining her cheeks. “I apologize for earlier. You really caught me off-guard at a really bad time. I didn’t mean to show any disrespect.”
Sesshoumaru couldn’t believe the nerve of this girl and apparently neither could Inuyasha. When he began to walk towards her, Inuyasha tried to get in the way, but she wouldn’t have it. It was almost comical the way she was ordering him around. “Why do you not fear me miko? This Sesshoumaru has tried to kill you a few times and even threatened your life today.”
She shrugged her shoulders, not really knowing what to say. She had no idea why she always managed to get up the nerve to face him. Something about his aura was comforting to her, although she would never admit it to anyone else. He’d probably kill her for even saying something so ludicrous. So she came up with something else. “Because you may be intimidating, but you’re not evil. You are too noble for that.”
He had to admit she was right, and it was the reason she was still standing. “Tell this Sesshoumaru what happens in that well.”
Kagome scratched her head, not really knowing how to explain it. It was hard enough for everyone else to believe. “Well… I’m not really from this time. The well is how I get home… about five hundred years in the future. It took a while to get used to the fact that youkai exist.” Kagome quickly covered her mouth. She had said too much.
Inuyasha was shocked to see his brother turn around and leave. He really didn’t think it was going to work. He was sure he was going to have to face Sesshoumaru. “I don’t believe that actually worked.”
Kagome smiled and headed for the village. She knew Sesshoumaru had a heart; he did have that little human girl in his care after all. She called back to Inuyasha when he didn’t follow right away, still standing in the same spot with a dumbstruck look on his features. “Come on Inuyasha! I’m sure everyone’s worried.” She glanced back only once and it was forced by something inside her. For some reason she couldn’t help but think she was losing something important to her.
As they walked into the village an orange ball of fur jumped up and latched himself on to Kagome. “Kagome your back! Did you bring me back any candy?”
Kagome smiled and reached into her bag. “Yes, but you don’t get it all at once.” She said handing a few bars of chocolate to him. “And don’t spoil your appetite. It’s almost time for supper.”
Shippou’s eyes lit up with delight as he ran off to eat his chocolate. “Yes Kagome and thanks!”
Inuyasha grunted. It wasn’t fair. The kit always got something. “Don’t come crying to me when he’s bouncing all over the place.”
Kagome snatched his hand and hers and began to drag him closer to the village knowing he was just jealous that she hadn’t given him anything yet, or specifically, ramen. She hadn’t eaten all day long and she was beginning to get hungry. “Come on Inuyasha. It’s time to fix us some supper.”
He snatched his hand back but followed anyway, curiosity peaked. “Did you bring any Ramen?”
She flashed him a smile as Miroku and Sango ran up to greet her. “What kind of question is that?”
Sango nearly toppled over Kagome with the impact of her hug, tear stained face making it very evident that she had been crying. She had lost enough in her life. She didn’t need to lose her best friend too. “Kagome… I thought you were never coming back! I am so glad you decided to come back to us!”
She hugged her best friend as the tears rolled down her cheeks. How she ever thought she could leave her friends behind, especially Sango, was beyond her. Sure she had friends in her time, but no one was as close to her as Sango. She would be missing a part of her heart if she were ever forced to leave them behind. “I’m sorry to scare you. It’s good to be back home.”
Miroku stepped forward to Inuyasha. Since he had been gone they had heard rumors of demons with extraordinary powers in the north. He would definitely want to know. “While you were out we received some rumors that point to a jewel shard in the far north. By the sounds of it, Naraku has made himself another minion.”
Kagome smiled knowing that this was exactly what Inuyasha wanted to hear. Now that they had Kouga’s shards, the only ones left were Naraku’s. “It wouldn’t be surprising if he created another one considering we left him with only Kagura, Kanna, Hakudoushi, and of course Kohaku. The scary thing is, though, that this one will probably be the most powerful yet. We don’t know how many jewel shards that he gave his new creation, and if rumors reached us this quickly it must be one powerful incarnation.”
Miroku nodded his head in agreement. “Yes I agree. I’d say that Naraku is most likely setting up another trap.”
Kagome’s thoughts went back to their last encounter with Naraku. They were trapped inside that oni’s belly, almost like her encounter with Kikyo, where Naraku had finally got them. In order to get out of that mess they had to put a shard in the tetsaiga to bump up the power of his diamond blast attack. What they hadn’t known was that even though the shard was pure, the youkai blood in Inuyasha tainted the jewel, sending him into his youkai state no matter how hard he tried to remain the same. She remembered being knee deep in acid, clinging on to him for dear life to keep him from transforming. She still had the scars on her legs to prove it. She hadn’t been able to walk for weeks afterward. Needless to say, neither Naraku nor Inuyasha was happy. Naraku pissed for another foiled plan and Inuyasha pissed for Kagome endangering her life for him. “We should take more precautions this time. He knows more now about us than he ever has. I say we think on it tonight and head out tomorrow morning.”
Inuyasha just looked at everyone as they agreed with Kagome and shook his head no. There was something she needed to do, someone she needed to speak to, before they left for this. “There is someone that would like to talk to you before we leave.”
He pointed to the tree line and everyone’s eyes widened, including Kagome’s. She glared at Inuyasha. “Well, aren’t you going to go after her?” She snapped.
Sango was fuming and Miroku had to hold her back. He whispered in her ear, trying to calm her down. “They need to work this out, not us.”
Inuyasha shocked everyone though when he shook his head no. Kikyo wouldn’t tell him what she wanted, but she had said that she needed to talk to her alone. She had told him not to worry, that she wouldn’t harm her, but there were some things that they needed to discuss. When he demanded an answer that’s when she had told him that Kagome gave her something. She had told him it was related to that. Although he answered Kagome, he couldn’t look her in the face so he studied the ground instead. “She doesn’t want me. She wants to talk to you Kagome.” He looked around at the rest of the group. “No one is to follow.”
Curious, Kagome headed for Kikyo, waving goodbye to everyone else. The fact that she didn’t want Inuyasha to come was intriguing enough. “I wonder what she could want from me?”
As Kikyo saw her approach she waived for Kagome to follow and made her way into the woods, not once again looking back. Kagome had to run not to lose her in the forest, as the trees got more and more dense. She didn’t know how Kikyo could move so fast.
Before she knew it Kikyo had lead her into one of the most beautiful meadows she had ever seen. Flowers of all colors scattered across the lush green grass that was divided by a shallow stream. Sakura petals drifted in the air, being tossed around in the wind. It was a breathtaking sight to see.
The amount of unadulterated goodness that radiated from that girl’s aura was confusing in itself. By just standing near she could feel her body warm and her hopes raised. It wasn’t possible for any human to be that pure, miko or not. The girl didn’t have a selfish bone in her body and would give her life in an instant if it were to save someone else’s. She accepted all creatures that walked on the earth with open arms.
She looked at the wide-eyed girl coolly and spoke. “Do you know why I have asked you here?”
Kagome’s attention snapped to her and she shook her head. She hadn’t the faintest idea. “Inuyasha said you wanted to talk with me.”
Kikyo sat down and motioned for Kagome to follow. “That day in the oni’s stomach made me realize something about me and you.” She paused as another soul was taken into her body. “The soul you carry within you does not belong to me. It never has. The fact that we look alike is just a coincidence. You carry a soul much larger and powerful than mine ever was. The portion of your soul you gave me to keep me alive was filled with so much love and compassion it made me realize that I really am dead. I wasn’t always like this. I really did love him.” Kikyo looked up to Kagome, sadness in her eyes. She was pleading with them. “You do not need me in the fight for Naraku. You alone will be enough. The amount of purity and power you contain is astonishing to behold. So then I beg for you to make your soul whole once again. I no longer wish the walk the land. I wish to find peace.”
Kagome was shocked. “I can’t kill you! I could never do that to Inuyasha.”
Kikyo looked at her sternly. “You cannot kill that which is already dead. Take your soul back. I know it pains you to be without it.”
She shook her head furiously. She didn’t want to do this. Yes, it was a pain she had never felt before, but she had learned to live with it. She didn’t want to be the person to kill Inuyasha’s long lost love. “Isn’t there another way?”
Kikyo held out her hand to Kagome, expecting her to take it. “No. Just promise me you will go to my sister and learn how to harness your powers. You are no ordinary miko, that much I know for a fact, and you will be the one to destroy Naraku.”
Kagome nodded her head. She really needed to learn more about herself. She took hold of Kikyo’s hand and gasped as she felt a surge of power flow through her body and a warmth settle in her heat, the incredible pain vanishing into thin air only to be replaced by a different kind. She watched in horror as Kikyo started to blow away like dust in the wind.
Kagome just collapsed and cried. “Why does everything have to happen to me? First I fall down the well, then I find out that grandpa wasn’t telling stories and youkai really exist, then I’m the one who had the stupid jewel, I was the one who shattered it, I am the only who can see it, and now I find out that I’m not normal! Not that being a miko wasn’t un-normal enough. Well isn’t that just peachy!” She must have cried for hours until she fell asleep in the bed of flowers, their scents calming her shattered nerves.
In the distance Sesshoumaru watched over her sleeping form. Something radiating that much power was bound to attract some attention. Something else to add to the mystery that was the miko.
He could barely contain himself from going to her side. It was like her aura was calling to him in her sleep. Something was tugging at his soul, trying to lead him to her, not allowing him to turn and leave. He growled as his body refused his demands. He was NOT attracted to a ningen, no matter how much power they seemed to contain.
~*~
Kagome spun around frantically not knowing where she was. The last thing she remembered was being in the meadow. Now she was standing in the middle of a massive Romanesque room with no doors and a white marble floor. As she looked at her surrounding she was absolutely amazed when she looked up. The most beautiful mural she had ever seen was painted across the ceiling depicting all the gods of mythology that her grandfather had taught her about.
As she was searching the walls for a way out she heard someone cry out a name. “Amaterasu?!”
Kagome’s brows narrowed in confusion. “Why would someone be calling for the goddess of the sun?”
She spun around as she heard a roar from behind her and came face to face with a blue-eyed white dragon. She froze in shock. On top of the dragon sat a beautiful woman with long red hair, pale pink eyes, sun kissed skin, and eight arms. “I have to be dreaming.” She said in shock.
The woman smiled and dismounted the dragon, taking Kagome into an eight-arm embrace, easing Kagome’s worries. “You are dreaming.” The woman smiled and took Kagome’s hand and led her to a mirror that appeared out of nowhere. “Susano-O is coming. Come, look in the mirror.”
Kagome followed but her eyes were on the beautiful dragon that curled up into a ball as the woman led her to the mirror. She would have never thought in her life that she would see a dragon. She wanted nothing more than to go touch his skin and see how he felt, but the woman recalled her attention to the mirror.
Kagome was amazed at the sight before her. This was no ordinary mirror. Inside was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. She had long flowing ebony hair, silver eyes, rosy pink lips, and snow-white skin that shimmered in the sun. Her dress only added to her beauty. Covering only the necessary parts of her body was a creamy white fabric held up by two gold shoulder straps. Wrapped around her midsection was a sheer fabric held in place by a gold band that wrapped around her. Around her waist she wore a golden belt that split on the sides to rise above and below her hips that fit her form perfectly. Long slender pieces of sheer fabric dangled from the gold bands that were on both arms. “Who… who… who is that?” Kagome managed to stammer out in her shock.
The woman beside her smiled and waved at the woman behind the mirror. “That is my sister Amaterasu.”
“The sun goddess! But that makes you a god!” Kagome was floored.
The woman’s smile broadened as she shook her head in agreement. “Yes, I am Benten, goddess of love.”
“But why are you in my dream? Or why am I dreaming this?” She asked completely confused about what was going on. Why would the gods show themselves to her?
As she was watching the mirror she saw it begin to shake tremendously and a smile cross Amaterasu’s lips. She watched a gorgeous man walk into the scene. He had long flowing black hair, chiseled body, and golden eyes. Dressed to kill in the color red, Kagome nearly drooled over herself. “Who is that?”
Benton looked down at the girl like she was insane. Why the girl didn’t realize who she was yet was beyond her. She was just glad Amaterasu and Susano-O had finally found one another again. Even if Susano-O was being stubborn about it. It was a shame they had to gain these forms to do it though. The fates had been cruel in making them foes. She decided to humor the young girl. She would find out on her own eventually. However, a god could only be so patient. “That is Susano-O, Amaterasu’s long lost love.”
This only puzzled Kagome more. “But aren’t they brother and sister? I thought that he was the reason she went into hiding? I thought they didn’t get along.”
This made Benton laugh. “Just because they come from Izanagi and Izanami does not make them brother and sister. Amaterasu was born from the tear produced from Izanagi when Izanami went to the underworld. Susano-O was born from the tear produced from Izanami when she found out she couldn’t be by her eternal mate’s side. They share the same parents, but no blood. You are right about them not getting along though, and he being the reason for her to run away. But those two have an unbreakable bond and they were meant to be together. That was just a disagreement. Before Susano-O got himself stuck in the underworld when he went to visit his mother they were meant to be husband and wife. They have gone through a lot to find each other again.”
“Really?” Kagome blushed as she watched the two greet each other like they were old lovers making it obvious that the goddess wasn’t lying. The question was why show her. “What does this have to do with me?”
“When the evil force is eradicated and your powers fully learned will you then know the answer to that question. It is not my place to tell you. You must go to Amaterasu’s or Susano-O’s shrines for more help.” Benton climbed onto the dragon and flew off through the ceiling. “Good luck sister.” She whispered into the wind.
In the end he couldn’t contain himself and ended up by her side. Her aura had been too inviting, her soul begging for his presence. She looked amazing in the pale moonlight basked in the pink glow that was her power. It disgusted him to think he was attracted to such a weak creature, but perhaps if he had her, he would finally lose his interest. He shook his head to dispel those thoughts. To even think about bedding a ningen was absurd. She had to have put a spell over him. There was no way he would ever entertain such thoughts on his own.
His head snapped up as he caught wind of Inuyasha. It would not bode well if he were to find him there. He may not have marked her, but it was blatantly obvious he was interested and so was she. The thought of them together made his blood boil and he had to turn away.
Inuyasha ran through the woods following her scent. It was past nightfall and she hadn’t come back yet so he set off to find her. He was beyond pissed. She knew better than to stay out this late. When he finally found her, he was amazed at what he saw, completely forgetting all anger.
Kagome lay there in a bed of flowers wrapped in a warm pink light sleeping peacefully and he couldn’t keep himself away from her. He saw her shivering form and quickly covered her with his haori, lying down beside her, pulling her close to his body. He quickly followed her into sleep.
~*~
As the sun peaked over the horizon her eyes fluttered open to see herself wrapped in Inuyasha’s arms. A blush crept across her cheeks as she remembered her dream. She wondered when he had found her. She noticed that they were wrapped in his haori, and blushed some more, feeling her hands on his bare chest.
As she tried to wiggle out of his arms she woke him from his sleep. “Where do you think you’re going wench? It took me all night to find you.” He growled tightening his grasp. That was, until he inhaled her scent.
His breath on her neck sent chills up her spine, immediately making him let go of her and creep away from her. She looked at him puzzled. “What was that for?”
He looked at her accusingly. “What were you dreaming about last night wench to make you smell like that? Or should I ask who?” Her scent was driving him crazy and he didn’t know why. Usually the only time he ever had a problem being around her was when she was in heat. This was even worse.
The blush across Kagome’s cheeks increased tenfold at his question about the dream. “I uh… I was… Benton the goddess of love came to visit my dreams. I got to see what true beauty looks like.”
Inuyasha shook his head. “Never mind, I don’t want to know about it. Come on its time to go look for the shard.”
Kagome shook her head no. She had to train first. If this was another one of Naraku’s traps; they had to prepare, she had to prepare. They needed to surprise him, and her being able to control her powers would be the perfect surprise. “I need to study with Kaede for a while before we go look for trouble.”
Inuyasha growled. “Why?”
“Because I want to learn a few tricks before we get lured into another obvious trap. You got a problem with that?” She snapped.
Inuyasha yelled. He was not going to get set back. Kikyo would see the defeat of Naraku. “Yes wench I do. We need to defeat Naraku now.”
Kagome glared at him but wanted to cry at the same time. She really didn’t want to tell him this. “It can wait. I have all of my soul back.”
He was shocked. He thought he had more time than that to have her see Naraku’s death. “Kikyo’s dead? How?” He growled. If anyone were responsible for her death he wouldn’t hesitate in repaying the favor.
She hated lying to him, but there was no way she could tell him that in a way she killed Kikyo. She wasn’t sure how he’d react to that, and she didn’t want to find out what he would do. “All I know is that she went peacefully. I could feel it when my soul returned.” It wasn’t a complete lie.
Inuyasha paced back and forth, not knowing what to do. He said one last thing before he left Kagome’s side. “I’m sorry. I have to go somewhere.”
As she watched him run off out of eyesight a sudden thought hit her and she screamed out to Inuyasha. “Baka! I don’t know where I am! How am I supposed to get back?”
Sesshoumaru smiled as he watched in the distance. The hanyou’s loss proved to be his gain. He was behind her in an instant. “It seems the mutt has left you in quite the predicament. And unguarded I might add.”
She knew who it was and was surprised at her body’s reaction yet again. Instead of filling with fear it was filled with something quite different, warmth that she couldn’t explain. Trying to push it aside she tried to figure out why he was there. “How is it that you always know when I am alone? Are you watching me?”
Sesshoumaru smirked and before she could react had her in his embrace. No matter how hard he tried he could not get his body or his beast to agree with his mind. They both wanted her and were taking control. He leaned down and whispered over the shell of her ear. “Perhaps.”
Her body went limp in his arms and shivers were sent down her spine. The warmth she had felt before had escaladed to a full blown fire at his touch. She couldn’t explain… didn’t want to explain, the feeling coursing through her body.
His grin widened as the scent of her arousal hit his nose. ‘So I am not the only one affected.’ “What would you do if I were?” He growled playfully into her ear.
Her mind was reeling. This was wrong… so wrong. He was supposed to be the enemy. He had tried to kill her… tried to kill her friends. He was the perfect killer. He was supposed to hate humans. Her mind screamed at her for her to push him away, that it wasn’t right, but her body just wouldn’t listen.
As she felt him nuzzle her neck and take in her scent she managed to gain some control trying to push him away but he wouldn’t allow it. “Please… this… isn’t… right.” She pleaded with gasping breaths. The attention he was showing her neck was driving her insane.
Sesshoumaru growled. His mind was screaming the same thing but he couldn’t stop himself. “Do you think I do not know this?”
It took all she had to get more words out beneath her ragged breaths. “Then… why?”
“You can not tell me you do not feel the pull I do. I can tell you feel it too. I do not know why my body desires you, nor do I care.” Lightly he kissed the crook of her neck and felt himself harden as she stifled a moan. She was even sweeter than he had expected.
She couldn’t contain herself as his warm lips touched her skin. It sent bolts of electricity throughout her body. Without warning the meaning of his words sunk in and she felt her body tense. He wanted her, wanted her for something she wasn’t ready to give. For the first time in his presence she became truly frightened.
He felt her body tense under him and the fear radiate off her form. He pulled her away and looked in her face for answers, but she wouldn’t look at him. He growled and grabbed her chin, forcing her to look at him. “Why is it you chose to fear me now?” He saw the blush on her cheeks increase as she tried to close her eyes. “Look at me!” He demanded.
She couldn’t believe he was making her spell it out for him. “I don’t fear you, I fear what you want to do with me.”
He glared at her. How could she think him so low as to do something that she did not herself desire. “What I want can wait until you are ready. But remember this, I will have you.”
Tears formed in her eyes. She was so confused. What would Inuyasha do when he found out? Why didn’t he matter anymore? She loved him… didn’t she. “But what about Inuyasha?”
His eyes softened as the tears slipped from her eyes, confusion clearly written on her features. Gently he wiped the tears from her cheeks. “How do you forgive people so easily?”
When her eyes met his they were captured with a heated golden gaze. His were a much deeper shade of gold then Inuyasha’s and somehow as cold as they looked they were much more inviting as well. She couldn’t breathe as his face lowered to hers and brushed his lips against hers. Her whole body was set aflame.
He pulled away and graced her with one last smile before his stoic mask fell back into place. “I will take you back to the village, but I will see you soon.”
Before she had a chance to disagree he had picked her up and taken off for the village. It didn’t take but a minute with his speed. In a flash she was at the village gates standing alone, the warmth his aura supplied growing dimmer the further he got away.
She shook herself to rid the rest of the lingering feelings. Everyone had to be worried about her. She had been away all night.
Sango came running out of the hut with a curious Kaede lagging behind. Sango had been so worried when she hadn’t come back and even more so when Inuyasha didn’t return either. “Where were you? We were worried to death about you. Did Inuyasha find you?” She ranted as she got within hearing distance.
Once Kaede caught up she joined in the questioning. “Aye, ye need to tell us what it was my sister wanted of ye.”
Kagome looked to them with pleading eyes. She needed to tell someone or she was going to break. “You can’t say a word to anyone else, especially Inuyasha.”
Sango looked hurt. “Of course not.”
Kaede just shook her head. “Ye shall not have to worry about us repeating yer words.”
Kagome hung her head so her bangs covered her eyes and told them everything that happened, well everything but Sesshoumaru. Everyone was crying. They were crying so much that they never heard a certain hanyou climb into the nearby tree.
Sango grabbed Kagome and made her look her in the eyes. “Kagome, this is not your fault. You did not kill her. She gave your soul back to you.”
Tears poured from Kagome’s eyes as she remembered her turning to ash and blowing off in the wind right before her very eyes. “But I let it happen! I could have refused to take it back! That way Inuyasha wouldn’t have run off and left me in the middle of nowhere because he has to deal with her death for the second time in his life! He would be happy then. He is miserable because I went along with it. What’s even worse is that for a split second I was glad she was gone! What kind of person does that make me? This is all my fault.” She couldn’t tell them that she had also betrayed everyone by consorting with his brother which made her feel even worse.
Kaede cleared her throat, attracting the attention to her. “Child ye are not to blame here. The only chance Kikyo had to a quick peaceful death was through ye. She can truly rest now. As for Inuyasha, he will get over it as he has done before. We will use this time to train you in becoming a miko. Agreed?”
Kagome nodded her head, wiping the tears from her face. Kaede always did have a way of making things sound better. “Agreed.” Kagome turned to Sango and smiled. “Do you think you could teach me some of your techniques as well?”
Sango was excited. She was going to help Kagome become a better fighter in combination with her miko skills. “Of course!”
Kaede turned around and headed back to the hut. “I have breakfast cooking if anyone would like some.”
Kagome could have sworn she felt something familiar in the trees and she wanted to check it out so she told Sango she would meet her there. She knew it wasn’t Sesshoumaru, it didn’t leave the same warm tingly feeling in her soul. This one was warm, but not the same. As she walked up to the tree line Inuyasha dropped out to stand before her. Tears threatened his eyes as she looked at him and her heart broke knowing he had heard everything. “I’m sorry. I know you hate me now.” Tears gathered in her eyes as she turned around to run.
Inuyasha growled and grabbed her by the shoulder, forcing her to face him. “I don’t hate you.” Kagome started to cry and he brought her close to his body and tried to soothe her.
“But I killed Kikyo! You should hate me!” She wailed.
Inuyasha sighed and continued to run his fingers through her hair. “I can’t deny that I loved her because I did. I mourn her loss, but you have to understand that if came down to protecting you or her, I would protect you. She was never going to be the same again no matter how much I wished it.” He planted a soft kiss on her forehead. “ Plus I don’t know what I’d do without you.” He gazed down into her soft brown eyes and smiled. “You are too good to me.”
Kagome smiled and curled up into Inuyasha. “I have a funny feeling that isn’t true.” Her smile quickly faded as the sinking feeling returned to her chest. For some reason his arms didn’t contain the same comfort in them anymore. He was finally showing her the type of attention she had always wanted to get from him and it made her feel nothing when compared to what she felt with Sesshoumaru. She cursed herself and her disobedient body.
Unbeknownst to the turmoil going on in her head he smiled and lifted her up into his arms. “Come on wench. We’re going to get something to eat.”
~~~~~~~~~~Together Again~~~~~~~~~~
~~~Chapter 3~~~
And yet, despite their many differences, there was a very close bond between them, which brought them together again and again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Inuyasha jumped out of the well with Kagome in his arms only to land directly in front of Sesshoumaru. He quickly set Kagome down behind him, but she ignored it and joined him at his side. Kagome bowed her head slightly and smiled at the taiyoukai standing in front of her, a blush staining her cheeks. “I apologize for earlier. You really caught me off-guard at a really bad time. I didn’t mean to show any disrespect.”
Sesshoumaru couldn’t believe the nerve of this girl and apparently neither could Inuyasha. When he began to walk towards her, Inuyasha tried to get in the way, but she wouldn’t have it. It was almost comical the way she was ordering him around. “Why do you not fear me miko? This Sesshoumaru has tried to kill you a few times and even threatened your life today.”
She shrugged her shoulders, not really knowing what to say. She had no idea why she always managed to get up the nerve to face him. Something about his aura was comforting to her, although she would never admit it to anyone else. He’d probably kill her for even saying something so ludicrous. So she came up with something else. “Because you may be intimidating, but you’re not evil. You are too noble for that.”
He had to admit she was right, and it was the reason she was still standing. “Tell this Sesshoumaru what happens in that well.”
Kagome scratched her head, not really knowing how to explain it. It was hard enough for everyone else to believe. “Well… I’m not really from this time. The well is how I get home… about five hundred years in the future. It took a while to get used to the fact that youkai exist.” Kagome quickly covered her mouth. She had said too much.
Inuyasha was shocked to see his brother turn around and leave. He really didn’t think it was going to work. He was sure he was going to have to face Sesshoumaru. “I don’t believe that actually worked.”
Kagome smiled and headed for the village. She knew Sesshoumaru had a heart; he did have that little human girl in his care after all. She called back to Inuyasha when he didn’t follow right away, still standing in the same spot with a dumbstruck look on his features. “Come on Inuyasha! I’m sure everyone’s worried.” She glanced back only once and it was forced by something inside her. For some reason she couldn’t help but think she was losing something important to her.
As they walked into the village an orange ball of fur jumped up and latched himself on to Kagome. “Kagome your back! Did you bring me back any candy?”
Kagome smiled and reached into her bag. “Yes, but you don’t get it all at once.” She said handing a few bars of chocolate to him. “And don’t spoil your appetite. It’s almost time for supper.”
Shippou’s eyes lit up with delight as he ran off to eat his chocolate. “Yes Kagome and thanks!”
Inuyasha grunted. It wasn’t fair. The kit always got something. “Don’t come crying to me when he’s bouncing all over the place.”
Kagome snatched his hand and hers and began to drag him closer to the village knowing he was just jealous that she hadn’t given him anything yet, or specifically, ramen. She hadn’t eaten all day long and she was beginning to get hungry. “Come on Inuyasha. It’s time to fix us some supper.”
He snatched his hand back but followed anyway, curiosity peaked. “Did you bring any Ramen?”
She flashed him a smile as Miroku and Sango ran up to greet her. “What kind of question is that?”
Sango nearly toppled over Kagome with the impact of her hug, tear stained face making it very evident that she had been crying. She had lost enough in her life. She didn’t need to lose her best friend too. “Kagome… I thought you were never coming back! I am so glad you decided to come back to us!”
She hugged her best friend as the tears rolled down her cheeks. How she ever thought she could leave her friends behind, especially Sango, was beyond her. Sure she had friends in her time, but no one was as close to her as Sango. She would be missing a part of her heart if she were ever forced to leave them behind. “I’m sorry to scare you. It’s good to be back home.”
Miroku stepped forward to Inuyasha. Since he had been gone they had heard rumors of demons with extraordinary powers in the north. He would definitely want to know. “While you were out we received some rumors that point to a jewel shard in the far north. By the sounds of it, Naraku has made himself another minion.”
Kagome smiled knowing that this was exactly what Inuyasha wanted to hear. Now that they had Kouga’s shards, the only ones left were Naraku’s. “It wouldn’t be surprising if he created another one considering we left him with only Kagura, Kanna, Hakudoushi, and of course Kohaku. The scary thing is, though, that this one will probably be the most powerful yet. We don’t know how many jewel shards that he gave his new creation, and if rumors reached us this quickly it must be one powerful incarnation.”
Miroku nodded his head in agreement. “Yes I agree. I’d say that Naraku is most likely setting up another trap.”
Kagome’s thoughts went back to their last encounter with Naraku. They were trapped inside that oni’s belly, almost like her encounter with Kikyo, where Naraku had finally got them. In order to get out of that mess they had to put a shard in the tetsaiga to bump up the power of his diamond blast attack. What they hadn’t known was that even though the shard was pure, the youkai blood in Inuyasha tainted the jewel, sending him into his youkai state no matter how hard he tried to remain the same. She remembered being knee deep in acid, clinging on to him for dear life to keep him from transforming. She still had the scars on her legs to prove it. She hadn’t been able to walk for weeks afterward. Needless to say, neither Naraku nor Inuyasha was happy. Naraku pissed for another foiled plan and Inuyasha pissed for Kagome endangering her life for him. “We should take more precautions this time. He knows more now about us than he ever has. I say we think on it tonight and head out tomorrow morning.”
Inuyasha just looked at everyone as they agreed with Kagome and shook his head no. There was something she needed to do, someone she needed to speak to, before they left for this. “There is someone that would like to talk to you before we leave.”
He pointed to the tree line and everyone’s eyes widened, including Kagome’s. She glared at Inuyasha. “Well, aren’t you going to go after her?” She snapped.
Sango was fuming and Miroku had to hold her back. He whispered in her ear, trying to calm her down. “They need to work this out, not us.”
Inuyasha shocked everyone though when he shook his head no. Kikyo wouldn’t tell him what she wanted, but she had said that she needed to talk to her alone. She had told him not to worry, that she wouldn’t harm her, but there were some things that they needed to discuss. When he demanded an answer that’s when she had told him that Kagome gave her something. She had told him it was related to that. Although he answered Kagome, he couldn’t look her in the face so he studied the ground instead. “She doesn’t want me. She wants to talk to you Kagome.” He looked around at the rest of the group. “No one is to follow.”
Curious, Kagome headed for Kikyo, waving goodbye to everyone else. The fact that she didn’t want Inuyasha to come was intriguing enough. “I wonder what she could want from me?”
As Kikyo saw her approach she waived for Kagome to follow and made her way into the woods, not once again looking back. Kagome had to run not to lose her in the forest, as the trees got more and more dense. She didn’t know how Kikyo could move so fast.
Before she knew it Kikyo had lead her into one of the most beautiful meadows she had ever seen. Flowers of all colors scattered across the lush green grass that was divided by a shallow stream. Sakura petals drifted in the air, being tossed around in the wind. It was a breathtaking sight to see.
The amount of unadulterated goodness that radiated from that girl’s aura was confusing in itself. By just standing near she could feel her body warm and her hopes raised. It wasn’t possible for any human to be that pure, miko or not. The girl didn’t have a selfish bone in her body and would give her life in an instant if it were to save someone else’s. She accepted all creatures that walked on the earth with open arms.
She looked at the wide-eyed girl coolly and spoke. “Do you know why I have asked you here?”
Kagome’s attention snapped to her and she shook her head. She hadn’t the faintest idea. “Inuyasha said you wanted to talk with me.”
Kikyo sat down and motioned for Kagome to follow. “That day in the oni’s stomach made me realize something about me and you.” She paused as another soul was taken into her body. “The soul you carry within you does not belong to me. It never has. The fact that we look alike is just a coincidence. You carry a soul much larger and powerful than mine ever was. The portion of your soul you gave me to keep me alive was filled with so much love and compassion it made me realize that I really am dead. I wasn’t always like this. I really did love him.” Kikyo looked up to Kagome, sadness in her eyes. She was pleading with them. “You do not need me in the fight for Naraku. You alone will be enough. The amount of purity and power you contain is astonishing to behold. So then I beg for you to make your soul whole once again. I no longer wish the walk the land. I wish to find peace.”
Kagome was shocked. “I can’t kill you! I could never do that to Inuyasha.”
Kikyo looked at her sternly. “You cannot kill that which is already dead. Take your soul back. I know it pains you to be without it.”
She shook her head furiously. She didn’t want to do this. Yes, it was a pain she had never felt before, but she had learned to live with it. She didn’t want to be the person to kill Inuyasha’s long lost love. “Isn’t there another way?”
Kikyo held out her hand to Kagome, expecting her to take it. “No. Just promise me you will go to my sister and learn how to harness your powers. You are no ordinary miko, that much I know for a fact, and you will be the one to destroy Naraku.”
Kagome nodded her head. She really needed to learn more about herself. She took hold of Kikyo’s hand and gasped as she felt a surge of power flow through her body and a warmth settle in her heat, the incredible pain vanishing into thin air only to be replaced by a different kind. She watched in horror as Kikyo started to blow away like dust in the wind.
Kagome just collapsed and cried. “Why does everything have to happen to me? First I fall down the well, then I find out that grandpa wasn’t telling stories and youkai really exist, then I’m the one who had the stupid jewel, I was the one who shattered it, I am the only who can see it, and now I find out that I’m not normal! Not that being a miko wasn’t un-normal enough. Well isn’t that just peachy!” She must have cried for hours until she fell asleep in the bed of flowers, their scents calming her shattered nerves.
In the distance Sesshoumaru watched over her sleeping form. Something radiating that much power was bound to attract some attention. Something else to add to the mystery that was the miko.
He could barely contain himself from going to her side. It was like her aura was calling to him in her sleep. Something was tugging at his soul, trying to lead him to her, not allowing him to turn and leave. He growled as his body refused his demands. He was NOT attracted to a ningen, no matter how much power they seemed to contain.

Kagome spun around frantically not knowing where she was. The last thing she remembered was being in the meadow. Now she was standing in the middle of a massive Romanesque room with no doors and a white marble floor. As she looked at her surrounding she was absolutely amazed when she looked up. The most beautiful mural she had ever seen was painted across the ceiling depicting all the gods of mythology that her grandfather had taught her about.
As she was searching the walls for a way out she heard someone cry out a name. “Amaterasu?!”
Kagome’s brows narrowed in confusion. “Why would someone be calling for the goddess of the sun?”
She spun around as she heard a roar from behind her and came face to face with a blue-eyed white dragon. She froze in shock. On top of the dragon sat a beautiful woman with long red hair, pale pink eyes, sun kissed skin, and eight arms. “I have to be dreaming.” She said in shock.
The woman smiled and dismounted the dragon, taking Kagome into an eight-arm embrace, easing Kagome’s worries. “You are dreaming.” The woman smiled and took Kagome’s hand and led her to a mirror that appeared out of nowhere. “Susano-O is coming. Come, look in the mirror.”
Kagome followed but her eyes were on the beautiful dragon that curled up into a ball as the woman led her to the mirror. She would have never thought in her life that she would see a dragon. She wanted nothing more than to go touch his skin and see how he felt, but the woman recalled her attention to the mirror.
Kagome was amazed at the sight before her. This was no ordinary mirror. Inside was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. She had long flowing ebony hair, silver eyes, rosy pink lips, and snow-white skin that shimmered in the sun. Her dress only added to her beauty. Covering only the necessary parts of her body was a creamy white fabric held up by two gold shoulder straps. Wrapped around her midsection was a sheer fabric held in place by a gold band that wrapped around her. Around her waist she wore a golden belt that split on the sides to rise above and below her hips that fit her form perfectly. Long slender pieces of sheer fabric dangled from the gold bands that were on both arms. “Who… who… who is that?” Kagome managed to stammer out in her shock.
The woman beside her smiled and waved at the woman behind the mirror. “That is my sister Amaterasu.”
“The sun goddess! But that makes you a god!” Kagome was floored.
The woman’s smile broadened as she shook her head in agreement. “Yes, I am Benten, goddess of love.”
“But why are you in my dream? Or why am I dreaming this?” She asked completely confused about what was going on. Why would the gods show themselves to her?
As she was watching the mirror she saw it begin to shake tremendously and a smile cross Amaterasu’s lips. She watched a gorgeous man walk into the scene. He had long flowing black hair, chiseled body, and golden eyes. Dressed to kill in the color red, Kagome nearly drooled over herself. “Who is that?”
Benton looked down at the girl like she was insane. Why the girl didn’t realize who she was yet was beyond her. She was just glad Amaterasu and Susano-O had finally found one another again. Even if Susano-O was being stubborn about it. It was a shame they had to gain these forms to do it though. The fates had been cruel in making them foes. She decided to humor the young girl. She would find out on her own eventually. However, a god could only be so patient. “That is Susano-O, Amaterasu’s long lost love.”
This only puzzled Kagome more. “But aren’t they brother and sister? I thought that he was the reason she went into hiding? I thought they didn’t get along.”
This made Benton laugh. “Just because they come from Izanagi and Izanami does not make them brother and sister. Amaterasu was born from the tear produced from Izanagi when Izanami went to the underworld. Susano-O was born from the tear produced from Izanami when she found out she couldn’t be by her eternal mate’s side. They share the same parents, but no blood. You are right about them not getting along though, and he being the reason for her to run away. But those two have an unbreakable bond and they were meant to be together. That was just a disagreement. Before Susano-O got himself stuck in the underworld when he went to visit his mother they were meant to be husband and wife. They have gone through a lot to find each other again.”
“Really?” Kagome blushed as she watched the two greet each other like they were old lovers making it obvious that the goddess wasn’t lying. The question was why show her. “What does this have to do with me?”
“When the evil force is eradicated and your powers fully learned will you then know the answer to that question. It is not my place to tell you. You must go to Amaterasu’s or Susano-O’s shrines for more help.” Benton climbed onto the dragon and flew off through the ceiling. “Good luck sister.” She whispered into the wind.

In the end he couldn’t contain himself and ended up by her side. Her aura had been too inviting, her soul begging for his presence. She looked amazing in the pale moonlight basked in the pink glow that was her power. It disgusted him to think he was attracted to such a weak creature, but perhaps if he had her, he would finally lose his interest. He shook his head to dispel those thoughts. To even think about bedding a ningen was absurd. She had to have put a spell over him. There was no way he would ever entertain such thoughts on his own.
His head snapped up as he caught wind of Inuyasha. It would not bode well if he were to find him there. He may not have marked her, but it was blatantly obvious he was interested and so was she. The thought of them together made his blood boil and he had to turn away.
Inuyasha ran through the woods following her scent. It was past nightfall and she hadn’t come back yet so he set off to find her. He was beyond pissed. She knew better than to stay out this late. When he finally found her, he was amazed at what he saw, completely forgetting all anger.
Kagome lay there in a bed of flowers wrapped in a warm pink light sleeping peacefully and he couldn’t keep himself away from her. He saw her shivering form and quickly covered her with his haori, lying down beside her, pulling her close to his body. He quickly followed her into sleep.
~*~
As the sun peaked over the horizon her eyes fluttered open to see herself wrapped in Inuyasha’s arms. A blush crept across her cheeks as she remembered her dream. She wondered when he had found her. She noticed that they were wrapped in his haori, and blushed some more, feeling her hands on his bare chest.
As she tried to wiggle out of his arms she woke him from his sleep. “Where do you think you’re going wench? It took me all night to find you.” He growled tightening his grasp. That was, until he inhaled her scent.
His breath on her neck sent chills up her spine, immediately making him let go of her and creep away from her. She looked at him puzzled. “What was that for?”
He looked at her accusingly. “What were you dreaming about last night wench to make you smell like that? Or should I ask who?” Her scent was driving him crazy and he didn’t know why. Usually the only time he ever had a problem being around her was when she was in heat. This was even worse.
The blush across Kagome’s cheeks increased tenfold at his question about the dream. “I uh… I was… Benton the goddess of love came to visit my dreams. I got to see what true beauty looks like.”
Inuyasha shook his head. “Never mind, I don’t want to know about it. Come on its time to go look for the shard.”
Kagome shook her head no. She had to train first. If this was another one of Naraku’s traps; they had to prepare, she had to prepare. They needed to surprise him, and her being able to control her powers would be the perfect surprise. “I need to study with Kaede for a while before we go look for trouble.”
Inuyasha growled. “Why?”
“Because I want to learn a few tricks before we get lured into another obvious trap. You got a problem with that?” She snapped.
Inuyasha yelled. He was not going to get set back. Kikyo would see the defeat of Naraku. “Yes wench I do. We need to defeat Naraku now.”
Kagome glared at him but wanted to cry at the same time. She really didn’t want to tell him this. “It can wait. I have all of my soul back.”
He was shocked. He thought he had more time than that to have her see Naraku’s death. “Kikyo’s dead? How?” He growled. If anyone were responsible for her death he wouldn’t hesitate in repaying the favor.
She hated lying to him, but there was no way she could tell him that in a way she killed Kikyo. She wasn’t sure how he’d react to that, and she didn’t want to find out what he would do. “All I know is that she went peacefully. I could feel it when my soul returned.” It wasn’t a complete lie.
Inuyasha paced back and forth, not knowing what to do. He said one last thing before he left Kagome’s side. “I’m sorry. I have to go somewhere.”
As she watched him run off out of eyesight a sudden thought hit her and she screamed out to Inuyasha. “Baka! I don’t know where I am! How am I supposed to get back?”
Sesshoumaru smiled as he watched in the distance. The hanyou’s loss proved to be his gain. He was behind her in an instant. “It seems the mutt has left you in quite the predicament. And unguarded I might add.”
She knew who it was and was surprised at her body’s reaction yet again. Instead of filling with fear it was filled with something quite different, warmth that she couldn’t explain. Trying to push it aside she tried to figure out why he was there. “How is it that you always know when I am alone? Are you watching me?”
Sesshoumaru smirked and before she could react had her in his embrace. No matter how hard he tried he could not get his body or his beast to agree with his mind. They both wanted her and were taking control. He leaned down and whispered over the shell of her ear. “Perhaps.”
Her body went limp in his arms and shivers were sent down her spine. The warmth she had felt before had escaladed to a full blown fire at his touch. She couldn’t explain… didn’t want to explain, the feeling coursing through her body.
His grin widened as the scent of her arousal hit his nose. ‘So I am not the only one affected.’ “What would you do if I were?” He growled playfully into her ear.
Her mind was reeling. This was wrong… so wrong. He was supposed to be the enemy. He had tried to kill her… tried to kill her friends. He was the perfect killer. He was supposed to hate humans. Her mind screamed at her for her to push him away, that it wasn’t right, but her body just wouldn’t listen.
As she felt him nuzzle her neck and take in her scent she managed to gain some control trying to push him away but he wouldn’t allow it. “Please… this… isn’t… right.” She pleaded with gasping breaths. The attention he was showing her neck was driving her insane.
Sesshoumaru growled. His mind was screaming the same thing but he couldn’t stop himself. “Do you think I do not know this?”
It took all she had to get more words out beneath her ragged breaths. “Then… why?”
“You can not tell me you do not feel the pull I do. I can tell you feel it too. I do not know why my body desires you, nor do I care.” Lightly he kissed the crook of her neck and felt himself harden as she stifled a moan. She was even sweeter than he had expected.
She couldn’t contain herself as his warm lips touched her skin. It sent bolts of electricity throughout her body. Without warning the meaning of his words sunk in and she felt her body tense. He wanted her, wanted her for something she wasn’t ready to give. For the first time in his presence she became truly frightened.
He felt her body tense under him and the fear radiate off her form. He pulled her away and looked in her face for answers, but she wouldn’t look at him. He growled and grabbed her chin, forcing her to look at him. “Why is it you chose to fear me now?” He saw the blush on her cheeks increase as she tried to close her eyes. “Look at me!” He demanded.
She couldn’t believe he was making her spell it out for him. “I don’t fear you, I fear what you want to do with me.”
He glared at her. How could she think him so low as to do something that she did not herself desire. “What I want can wait until you are ready. But remember this, I will have you.”
Tears formed in her eyes. She was so confused. What would Inuyasha do when he found out? Why didn’t he matter anymore? She loved him… didn’t she. “But what about Inuyasha?”
His eyes softened as the tears slipped from her eyes, confusion clearly written on her features. Gently he wiped the tears from her cheeks. “How do you forgive people so easily?”
When her eyes met his they were captured with a heated golden gaze. His were a much deeper shade of gold then Inuyasha’s and somehow as cold as they looked they were much more inviting as well. She couldn’t breathe as his face lowered to hers and brushed his lips against hers. Her whole body was set aflame.
He pulled away and graced her with one last smile before his stoic mask fell back into place. “I will take you back to the village, but I will see you soon.”
Before she had a chance to disagree he had picked her up and taken off for the village. It didn’t take but a minute with his speed. In a flash she was at the village gates standing alone, the warmth his aura supplied growing dimmer the further he got away.
She shook herself to rid the rest of the lingering feelings. Everyone had to be worried about her. She had been away all night.
Sango came running out of the hut with a curious Kaede lagging behind. Sango had been so worried when she hadn’t come back and even more so when Inuyasha didn’t return either. “Where were you? We were worried to death about you. Did Inuyasha find you?” She ranted as she got within hearing distance.
Once Kaede caught up she joined in the questioning. “Aye, ye need to tell us what it was my sister wanted of ye.”
Kagome looked to them with pleading eyes. She needed to tell someone or she was going to break. “You can’t say a word to anyone else, especially Inuyasha.”
Sango looked hurt. “Of course not.”
Kaede just shook her head. “Ye shall not have to worry about us repeating yer words.”
Kagome hung her head so her bangs covered her eyes and told them everything that happened, well everything but Sesshoumaru. Everyone was crying. They were crying so much that they never heard a certain hanyou climb into the nearby tree.
Sango grabbed Kagome and made her look her in the eyes. “Kagome, this is not your fault. You did not kill her. She gave your soul back to you.”
Tears poured from Kagome’s eyes as she remembered her turning to ash and blowing off in the wind right before her very eyes. “But I let it happen! I could have refused to take it back! That way Inuyasha wouldn’t have run off and left me in the middle of nowhere because he has to deal with her death for the second time in his life! He would be happy then. He is miserable because I went along with it. What’s even worse is that for a split second I was glad she was gone! What kind of person does that make me? This is all my fault.” She couldn’t tell them that she had also betrayed everyone by consorting with his brother which made her feel even worse.
Kaede cleared her throat, attracting the attention to her. “Child ye are not to blame here. The only chance Kikyo had to a quick peaceful death was through ye. She can truly rest now. As for Inuyasha, he will get over it as he has done before. We will use this time to train you in becoming a miko. Agreed?”
Kagome nodded her head, wiping the tears from her face. Kaede always did have a way of making things sound better. “Agreed.” Kagome turned to Sango and smiled. “Do you think you could teach me some of your techniques as well?”
Sango was excited. She was going to help Kagome become a better fighter in combination with her miko skills. “Of course!”
Kaede turned around and headed back to the hut. “I have breakfast cooking if anyone would like some.”
Kagome could have sworn she felt something familiar in the trees and she wanted to check it out so she told Sango she would meet her there. She knew it wasn’t Sesshoumaru, it didn’t leave the same warm tingly feeling in her soul. This one was warm, but not the same. As she walked up to the tree line Inuyasha dropped out to stand before her. Tears threatened his eyes as she looked at him and her heart broke knowing he had heard everything. “I’m sorry. I know you hate me now.” Tears gathered in her eyes as she turned around to run.
Inuyasha growled and grabbed her by the shoulder, forcing her to face him. “I don’t hate you.” Kagome started to cry and he brought her close to his body and tried to soothe her.
“But I killed Kikyo! You should hate me!” She wailed.
Inuyasha sighed and continued to run his fingers through her hair. “I can’t deny that I loved her because I did. I mourn her loss, but you have to understand that if came down to protecting you or her, I would protect you. She was never going to be the same again no matter how much I wished it.” He planted a soft kiss on her forehead. “ Plus I don’t know what I’d do without you.” He gazed down into her soft brown eyes and smiled. “You are too good to me.”
Kagome smiled and curled up into Inuyasha. “I have a funny feeling that isn’t true.” Her smile quickly faded as the sinking feeling returned to her chest. For some reason his arms didn’t contain the same comfort in them anymore. He was finally showing her the type of attention she had always wanted to get from him and it made her feel nothing when compared to what she felt with Sesshoumaru. She cursed herself and her disobedient body.
Unbeknownst to the turmoil going on in her head he smiled and lifted her up into his arms. “Come on wench. We’re going to get something to eat.”
