Chapter 3

Kagome arrived at home just after sunset. Her mother was as happy as usual to see her angry daughter. She was forever arguing with Inuyasha about something, and her mother never asked her anything unless she cried. She was happy to have been home after such a long trim to the feudal era. She had soaked in the hottest bubble-bath she could stand, and was now dressed in her favorite pajamas falling onto her bed. Only she never hit the bed. A very strong pair or arms caught her mid fall. She was shocked, but somehow not surprised to look up and see Inuyasha. He had a look of concern on his face that almost looked like shock. She never even remembered to be mad at him because of the look on his face. He was so worried about something it was almost forgivable that he had been such a jerk to her only hours ago.

Kagome reached up to touch his face. "Inuyasha, are you okay. Did something happen? You look so worried."

He looked at her for a moment before laying her down on her bed. He sat there for a moment before he looked at her face. "You could say that something happened. You were being followed in the woods. Sesshomaru was tracking you."

She was stunned, but very curious. "Why would he be looking for me? He has no interest in the Sacred Jewel. Since Naraku died we sent it back to Midoriko anyway."

He crouched down placing his hands in opposite sleeves. "He doesn’t want the jewel. He wants us, or at least you. He sends the two of us an invitation to his estate. He said that Rin needed a female companion to talk to for a short time. Personally I think he’s hit a place with that girl that he doesn't know anything about, and that would mean anything that concerns having a heart. I just don’t understand why he wants you. I just get to tag along like your personal bodyguard. I really don’t like this."

"Inuyasha have you thought for one second that maybe acquiring a heart is the reason Rin is still alive, and besides it would give me a chance to find out more about her. We don't actually have the option of visiting your family you know." She stared him down and for the first time in a long time she watched him be silent.

“It’s just weird that now of all times.” Inuyasha was still confused about the conversation. “He’s never wanted anything to do with me. He’s only had a couple hundred years or so. Minus the fifty I spent growing moss on the sacred tree.

“Inuyasha……… any time that your brother would actually call on us would be weird. He never has anything to do with us since he can’t wield Tessiaga. This is too good of an opportunity to pass up. Don’t you want to know what the problem is?”

“Yeah, but he made it very apparent that he hated me from the day I was born, but then again he still doesn’t want me. He wants you. I just come with the package.” He stated slyly.

“We’ll leave first thing in the morning. You can bunk with Souta for the night.”

He knew that he was being kicked out of her room for the sly package comment. She was still mad at him, and she never liked it when he followed her home, but she would have even angrier if he hadn’t followed her to give her the message. She never liked it when he hid anything from her. For now they would rest and in the morning they would leave. It was Kagome’s decision whether he liked it or not.

Kagome nestled herself in her bed She wanted to at least get a little rest before she headed back to the feudal era. She rolled over to face the wall because she could hear Inuyasha wimpering at her door. She thought about it for a long time before she finally gave in and let him come in the room with her. He never said a word to her when she let him in he simply stopped wimpering and curled up on the far side of the bed. Kagome could count on one hand how many times he had been so annoying that she had actually let him sleep with her. She never would have told him she liked it anyway. That would be her little secret. The problem was that he never touched her when they did sleep together. It was altogether a little frustrating, but at least he was being good for a change.

They didn't stay long in the present that next morning. Kagome had decided that she was gonna spend her birthday with Rin after the conversation that was held the night before. She had met Rin on numerous occasions, and she knew that Rin was a very kind-hearted girl. She wondered what it was that Sesshomaru couldn't figure out himself or if it really was the fact that Rin had in fact been away from people so long that she needed another human. She was more than willing to find out, and all but eager to see the InuTashio family estate.

They said their goodbyes and headed to the shrine’s well house on the edge of the property. Once on the other side of the well they met Shippo playing in the grass. "Hey brat, tell Songo and Miroku that Kagome and Me are going to an invitation at Sesshomaru's. It's supposed to be somethin' stupid about Rin."

Kagome stared at him for his usual lack of respect for anyone. "Shippo, please make sure that they get the message. We aren't sure yet when we’re coming home, but we want them to know where we are anyway. Tell them that nothing is wrong, but Sesshomaru invited us to come visit with Rin. This is a once in a lifetime chance that we are definitely going to take."

"Okay Kagome." Shippo would do anything for Kagome. She was like his other mother and big sister all in one. He had been angry with Inuyasha for making her mad enough to leave yesterday, but he knew that since she came back with him it would be okay. At least for the moment they weren’t fighting. That never really lasts long, but for the moment was good enough.

She took her place on Inuyasha's back and they set off to find the Inu-Youki Estate. The journey was across some very beautiful lands. It was land that Inuyasha’s Father had fought for, and his brother Sesshomaru now ruled. Kagome couldn’t help but wonder if Inuyasha was a little jealous of his brother for his inheritance, but she knew better than to insinuate as much. He had never gotten the chance to even meet his father. Sesshomaru wasn’t exactly going to invite them with open arms when they arrived, but any form of an invitation was enough. He was too reserved to ever actually show that he wanted anything that didn’t profit him in some way, but maybe he had changed. They hadn’t seen or heard from him for about two years. According to Myouga that was around the time that he had chosen to settle himself in the estate for a while, but his reasons for doing so evaded everyone’s thoughts. Why would a restless soul slow down. Only one way to find out for sure. They had to go find out for themselves.

Myouga was the one who wandered the lands in place of Sesshomaru since he had stopped wondering the lands. He was only trusted with the chore for the simple reason that he had stayed loyal to the InuTashio descendants after their father’s untimely demise. Sesshomaru had wanted to appoint someone who would be intelligent enough to move around and not be seen. Myouga was the perfect subject to carryout this mission for the simple fact that Sesshomaru knew that he wouldn’t stay anywhere that someone was about to be injured. He was too old to be a fool, but he didn’t always know everything he thought he did. He had never liked the fact that Myouga still kept in touch with Inuyasha, but he knew he was family none the less and loyalty was loyalty. His father had mention once before his death that he would not approve of some of the decisions Sesshomaru made, but he would always be his son. He didn’t have a clue as to what his father was talking about until recently. Some things that people do in the name of character must be forgiven.

They had traveled about half a day before they came to a rather large estate adorned with stone Inu-Youki along a walkway to the door. It was a huge house. She was sure it had been in their family for a long time, but also wondered why if their family had a home like this why Sesshomaru would ever be enticed to live off the land for as long as he had. If given the choice she knew she would have chosen to live in a place like this, but it wasn’t essential for happiness. She wondered if Inuyasha’s mother had ever been given the option to live in this house. Probably not, given Sesshomaru’s nature but who knows for sure.

"Hey Kagome, stay close to me. I don't know if we should trust this bastard or not. More than likely not, but just stay close anyway." He looked around. The entire place smelled of his brother, so there was no way he could tell if he was anywhere near them or not. He knew better than to trust his brother. He had long since had a personal vendetta about him, and let everyone know it. He had never actually tried to kill Inuyasha for some reason, but he hated him none the less. Sesshomaru probably wouldn’t have lost a nights sleep if he had killed him a long time ago, but now who knew. If Sesshomaru was inviting them to the Estate something about him had to have changed.

They began walking down the long stone path that led up to the house. Kagome couldn’t help herself when it came to admiring the stone figures. The way they were cast gave her the impression that they had been made to signify the descendants of the Inu family. She was almost sure they were carved in the form of real demons of the Inu bloodline. She was lost in thought as Inuyasha, watched her examine every stone along their path before walking to the door to knock. He couldn’t help but think about what would happen if things were different.
