CHAPTER TWO
Miroku, Sango, Inuyasha and Kagome sat in the booth of an elegant Italian restaurant. Talking about where they grew up and what inspired them to move so far away from home.
Kagome learned that Miroku and Inuyasha decided to apply to Juilliard together, seeing as they were best friends, and excellent musicians. They moved to New York 2 years ago and they were both 20 years old.
“Inuyasha what instrument do you play?” Kagome asked, cutting a piece of her chicken parmesan.
“I play the violin.”
Kagome nodded, and took a bite of her chicken. “How about you Miroku?”
“I play the cello.”
“Kagome how long have you been dancing?” Inuyasha asked.
Inuyasha would be lying to himself if he said he didn’t find Kagome attractive, his breath caught in his throat when he first saw her in her room. But more importantly he would love another friend, and he was really interested in getting to know Kagome better. He wanted to help her get adjusted to life in the United States…she seemed so sweet and vulnerable…and for some reason he felt a strong urge to protect her.
“Oh.” She smiled remembering her little studio where she began ballet lessons. “Umm, since I was 5.” She suddenly remembered what she wanted to ask and turned to Sango. “OK, how did you and Miroku meet? You never told me.”
Kagome noticed Inuyasha shifting uneasily in his seat. Sango and Mirolu looked at Inuyasha, but he wouldn’t meet their eyes.
“Actually, Inuyasha’s ex-girlfriend…”
Sango was interrupted with what sounded like a growl. Inuyasha rose from the table, and walked out of the restaurant. Miroku looked at Sango, and she nodded. Miroku rose and followed his friend.
“I’m sorry…” Kagome began.
“No. No, it’s OK Kagome. This may not be my place to tell you, but I think you deserve an explanation for Inuyasha’s behavior.”
Kagome remained silent.
“Right after Inuyasha and Miroku moved to New York, he met Kikyo. It was Kikyo who introduced me to Miroku, actually. She invited a bunch of people to this party, and we hit it off right away. Unfortunately, I ended up drinking too much. Miroku was so sweet to me…he even held my hair back when I got sick...” She blushed and trailed off. “Anyway, they were dating for almost 2 years, and Inuyasha told us he was even thinking about asking Kikyo to marry him. But then about 4 moths ago…”
Sango never got to finish, Miroku and Inuyasha were walking back to the table. No one talked very much the rest of the meal. Inuyasha kept his eyes on his plate, and Kagome got the impression that he was trying desperately to keep his emotions in check.
Kagome knew something happened between Inuyasha and Kikyo, it was so obvious. And from Inuyasha’s reaction is wasn’t good. Kagome had a feeling that that was why they broke up. She felt bad for Inuyasha. She just met him, but he seemed like a nice guy. Kagome could understand why he reacted how he did. His relationship with Kikyo was still a touchy subject.
Kagome suspected that Inuyasha could have any girl he wanted. She thought he was very handsome. Her cheeks flushed at that thought, and she looked up at Inuyasha, who was staring at her. She quickly looked away.
‘Man, she’s beautiful.’ He thought.
‘Stop it you idiot!’ He berated himself.
Inuyasha finished his dinner and pushed his plate away. He hated when he had these inner battles. He felt like his head was going to explode.
‘Look what your last relationship got you.’
‘Yeah…a broken heart. I don’t think I’ll trust anyone ever again. I’ll end up alone and become one of those cranky old guys…’
“Everyone ready to go?” Miroku asked.
Inuyasha hadn’t noticed Miroku had already paid the bill. He reached for his wallet. Kagome did the same.
“It’s OK, I got it. My treat.”
“Thanks so much Miroku.” Kagome said.
“Thanks, man, I wasn’t sure if I had enough…I’d probably be washing dishes.” He winked at Kagome. Miroku playfully punched him in the arm, and Inuyasha rubbed his arm like Miroku really hurt him. Sango and Kagome laughed. They headed out of the restaurant.
They walked the block and a half to their building. Before they entered, Inuyasha grabbed Kagome’s hand.
“You guys go ahead we’ll be up in a bit.”
Miroku raised an eyebrow, and Sango looked nervous.
“I just thought I’d take Kagome out for coffee…you know, to make up for being rude earlier…that is if you want to go.” He said looking at Kagome.
Kagome nodded.
“Okay see you in a bit Kagome. You have your key right?”
“Yep.”
“ ‘Kaye. G’night.” Sango gave Inuyasha a skeptical look.
“G’night.” Kagome and Inuyasha said in unison.
“Night.” Said Miroku, and followed Sango up the stairs.
.“Where are we going?” She asked, as Inuyasha led her along down the street
“To my favorite coffee house…The Aquarius Café.”
The Aquarius Café was just around the corner from their building. Inuyasha led Kagome to his favorite table by the large front window.
“OK what can I get you?” Inuyasha asked.
“Ummm…just tea please.”
“Cream, sugar?”
Kagome nodded, and watched Inuyasha walk up to the counter. She could tell he was flirting with the cashier. Her stomach tightened, and her heart dropped.
‘Oh, get over yourself, Kagome. As if he would be interested in you…plus did you happen to forget about what happened with his ex-girlfriend?’
‘No. But I don’t even know what happened!’ She argued with herself.
‘Stop being stupid. You have a good idea.’
‘But…’
Inuyasha watched Kagome stare out the window lost in thought. Inuyasha shook his head.
‘She probably thinks I’m a jerk now.’
‘It’s just as well…you really wanna get burned again?’
‘No, not really.’
“That’ll be $6.75.”
“Thanks.” Inuyasha smiled at the cashier and headed back to the table.
“Here you go.”
“Thanks Inuyasha.” Kagome sipped her tea.
“Hey, look, I’m really sorry about being rude earlier…it’s just…a lot of shit happened between me and Kikyo...”
Kagome put her hands over top Inuyasha’s. He gave her a questioning look, but she just smiled.
“Inuyasha. It’s alright. You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to. I mean, we just met. I don’t know you, and you don’t know me. Right? …Anyway, it’s not really any of my business.” She let go of his hands.
He nodded.
They finished their drinks in silence, and headed home.
“G’night.” Kagome said turning the key in the lock.
“ G’night Kagome.” He watched as she disappeared inside her apartment. ‘Inuyasha, ol' buddy...you are SOOOO dead.’ He thought, and went inside his own apartment.
