Doghouse

The sound of the alarm rang in the demon’s ears as he raced down the various metal corridors of the human base.

‘Damn that bitch!’ His mind screamed. ‘How could I be so fucking stupid to let her screw me like that? Now this whole damn place is going to be on my ass. Damn it!’

No sooner had the thought crossed his mind than a group of six humans armed with selection of heavy machine guns came into view as he turned the next corner.

The demon let out a dire growl from the depths of his being that hung in the windless air. The humans dropped into position in front of the heavy double door, and readied their weapons to fire.

"Freeze, Demon!" one of the soldiers called out only to be answered with a fanged smirk.

The demon accelerated out of sight moving at unbelievable velocity. The six soldiers opened fire in a panic, but only managed to send a hail of bullets into the empty air.

"We need backup. East corridor!"

The youkai landed sideways on the wall to the right before springing forward to catch one of the soldiers’ rifles in his clawed hand while delivering a thundering kick to the chest of the soldier to his right sending him hurtling into two of his comrades. Quickly the demon ripped the gun out of the other human’s hand after striking him squarely in the jaw. With the riffle he clubbed the only two still standing humans about the face instantly dropping them both unconscious. From the floor, one of the humans who had been knocked over in the initial attack rose with weapon drawn and opened fire. The demon however seemingly saw this coming and used the riffle in his hands to deflect the end of the human’s weapon away before bringing the shoulder butt to his face viciously knocking him out. Behind the demon another of the fallen humans rose to his feet unsheathing a concealed blade from his ankle, but before the human could attack the demon hurled the gun in his hand from a backhand position to strike the soldier in the head with the butt end.

The demon snorted in satisfaction as his last foe fell to the floor in a heap. Gathering his composure he opened the doubled door his head still turned to the side making certain that the humans hadn’t recovered yet. That’s when he heard it. The distant thunk-click of a shotgun being cocked beyond the door in front of him. No sooner than the demon had ducked out of the way did the shot come that put a six inch hole in the door where he had just been standing. The door slowly swung open to reveal a room filled from one corner to the next with human troops.

"You’ve got to be kidding me."

The demon’s eye twitched as a sudden ill wind caught his attention. ‘What in the nine hells-’ but it was too late to react. The vicious blow fell soundly on the fugitive’s back sending him sailing into the occupied room before him.

He came crashing into the room colliding with various tables and chairs that were, in kind, reduced to their lesser components. At last coming to a halt, the path of destruction the demon had wrought in his wake came to rest in streak of debris running from the center of the room to the door. The soldiers remained cautiously in their positions as the double doors still swung slightly from the violent entrance of their quarry. A clawed hand pushed aside one of the doors to allow its owner’s entrance.

"That had to suck!" Kouga announced gruffly.

Strolling in the door, he surveyed the damage his kick had yielded. The room was thrown into absolute disarray as the swath of chaos about its center was nothing less than daunting.

"Poor bastard never even saw it coming."

The soldiers about the walls began to show signs of confidence as there seemed to be no movement coming from the collection of debris where the youkai had been struck down. Slowly they advanced on the pile of rubble weapons still drawn.

"Shit. Kaede better not make me clean up this crap." Kouga muttered to himself as he surveyed the damage he had inflicted. Satisfied that he had slain the errant demon when he had felt the give of breaking ribs, the wolf demon turned and began to make his way out of the cafeteria.

Behind him the soldiers stood in cautious admiration of their comrade hanyou. Most of them knew he was powerful, but none of them thought of him as trustworthy.

"The demon wacked one of his own?" One soldier muttered.

"They don’t care about one another. They kill what they can."

"I don’t see why we even let that monster stick around. He’s a fucking demon for Christ’s sake."

"Forget about it. He’s on a short leash."

"Yeah, well that still doesn’t make him any less youkai, even if he does have that damn S.U.T.R.A. thing."

The words of the soldiers hung in Kouga’s ears. He had long since become accustomed to their mistrust, but their brazen disregard for him now was insufferable. The young wolf demon rubbed his neck where the sub-dermal restraint has been implanted.

‘If it wasn’t for this damn chip I’d…’

Kouga was however unable to finish his thought as the sound of loosening debris caught his attention.

The soldiers had grown deathly silent. The subtle cracks of the rubble were the only sounds that could be heard in the great hall.

"No way…." Kouga muttered to himself. Swiftly he turned and trained his senses on the pile of concrete and metal furnishings.

One of the larger concrete fragments shifted its position soliciting a cry of uproar from the crowd of soldiers.

"Shoot the son of a bitch before it gets up!" yelled one of the soldiers in front as he advanced and pointed his riffle at the now stirring debris.

"Get back you stupid asshole!" Kouga barked.

But it was too late….

The rubble suddenly exploded in all directions with unbelievable force sending huge fragments of floor sections and steel furniture in all directions. The storm of projectiles blew back the rows of men while sending up a thick cloud of dust obscuring all from sight.

‘Damn it…’ Kouga fumed.

"Oh yeah…." A low and menacing voice from beyond the dust growled while his blazing crimson eyes burned through the haze. Slowly the dark gray particles that hung in the air settled, and as they went, the silver-mained youkai came more and more into view. He took a slow and deliberate step forward. "Someone is definitely tired of breathing."

Kouga stood in disbelief as he spotted his own fist tremble.

‘No… this chump isn’t gonna scare me.’ Kouga bolstered himself.

"Don’t want to stay dead, huh? Fine, I’ll just have to keep on killing you until you want to stay down."

The opposing demon offered no response save a wicked smirk across his right fang.

"You pompous fuck!" Kouga roared as he charged his foe.

-Elsewhere in the compound-

"Songo slow down!" Kagome called out to her friend running just ahead of her. "You’re hurt. We need to get you to the infirmary not into another fight with that demon.

"I am not letting that thing escape!" Songo yelled as the blood from her brow oozed sluggishly down her face and into her eye.

"But Songo"

Yet while her friend called out to her, Songo heard not a word. All that occupied her thoughts was that demon.

‘Why didn’t it kill me? I was right there without any defense. Why did it just run off like that?’

So preoccupied was Songo that she was unable to avoid the young man just beyond the corner she had just turned.

"Songo." Miroku said aloud as his fiancee caught her balance fumbling backwards. "What the hell happened?"

"The new demon escaped from the bio lab. We have to catch it before it gets to the surface!"

"No way." Miroku announced over the blasting alarm. "You aren’t going anywhere like this."

"I will go where I want Miroku." Songo’s voice suddenly gaining a grim tambor.

"The hell you will Leitennant." Miroku snapped back.

Kagome stood silently against the storm of her two friends quarreling. She had never heard Miroku sound so mad at Songo, and Songo herself was already hurt. She didn’t need to be provoked any more than she was.

"You fucking prick!" Songo screeched. "You think I give a rat’s ass what rank you are you little shit?"

But before Songo could further lay into her commander, she was harshly interrupted by the sudden destruction of the wall to the mess hall not twenty feet from their present location.

"What the hell?" Miroku yelled shielding his eyes from the flying bits of debris.

"It’s him…" Songo whispered to herself.

The dust settled to the ground and revealed warring demons locked in a fierce grapple. Kouga had his hands locked in the other demon’s trying to fight for control of the leverage, but it wasn’t him that would get that control. With an arrogant grin, the scarred demon slowly bent the hands of his enemy back until he was forced to his knee under the pressure.

"Get off me!" Kouga growled as he flipped up and out of his enemy’s grip.

The three human comrades could only watch in awe as two demons stared each other down.

"Is that all?" growled the fugitive youkai.

"Not even close half-breed!" Kouga roared back.

Running at unbelievable speed, the wolf demon advanced on his opponent. His fist raised, he howled into combat, yet while his fierce cry echoed in the hall there was a familiar smile creeping across the his enemy’s face.

Kouga’s fist dropped like a hammer sending them both screaming backwards in a similar cloud of dust, but as the dust settled, the three humans watched in horror as what they saw was impossible.

The fugitive had managed to catch Kouga’s blow as he fell into a defensive stance at the last minute. Kouga struggled to free himself, but the other demon was simply too strong.

Releasing one clawed hand from its hold on Kouga’s arm, the demon caught wolf youkai about the face. Spinning brutally with Kouga still in his terrible grip, he collected enough velocity to send Kouga sailing into the wall at the right. The wall buckled under the huge impact, and gave into a large crater where Kouga had impacted.

Kouga grimaced in pain, but before he could gather his strength he was met squarely in the stomach with The attacking demon’s knee. Kouga’s eyes shot open as he coughed a violent exhalation of blood and air.
Kouga bent over from the horrible blow to his abdomen. This motion was immediately followed by His attacker’s hand coming to grip on Kouga’s throat and pushing him up against the wall again. Kouga struggled against the iron clasp about his neck, but only found it only constricting under his resistance. Through his blurred vision he saw his attacker winding up for a direct blow on his face.

‘Not like this…" Kouga’s mind begged.

The moment was here. Kouga knew when his fist connected, it would crush his skull and his life would be over. This was the last breath he would take, but at the instant where the sickening sound of snapping bone and cartilage should have filled the air there was instead a shot.

In an instant Kouga felt the grip on his neck release as he fell to the floor in a heap. His head connected roughly to the floor, and his senses blurred on the edge of consciousness. It felt like being in slow motion. All that he could hear was raised voices that seemed to be growing ever distant, and all he could see was the hazy outlines of soldiers rushing down the hall.

‘Run…’ Kouga thought at the verge of passing out. ‘Don't let them catch…’
