Backrubs, Explosions and Regrets

Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha sadly enough!

Sesshoumaru growled low in his throat as he passed his mate’s room after he finished his bath. They had been mates for all of 5 hours and already she had slept with another. He recognized the scent as one of his servants and made a mental not to…talk with him about his mate. True he despised her, but she was his…that meant she was not to go about fucking every damn male that passed her room!

In his rage he walked strait into someone walking in the opposite direction. When he looked down his heart seemed to jump into his throat when he saw it was Rin. His eyes softened and he knelt before her offering her a hand. She blushed slightly as she pressed her small hand into his larger one. As they rose to their feet he looked down at her and said softly “Please forgive my rudeness, I didn’t see you there. I was…distracted.”

Rin was astonished. This was the first time he had spoken more than five words to her. “It’s fine.” She mumbled turning away as a blush crept across her face. He smiled down at her, for a human she really was quite cute, especially when she was embarrassed. When he caught himself smiling he quickly returned his face to its normal expressionless self. He would not show weakness in front of this human. For that’s all emotion was, weakness.

He sighed and then looked down at the girl. “Rin, I must ask you a favor, will you please walk with me?”

She looked up at him her large eyes filled with disbelief, and mutely nodded. What could he possibly want with her? Sesshoumaru heard her heartbeat quicken, but did not sense any fear. This was odd to him. Why would one’s heart rate increase if they were not scared? He shook it off and the two proceeded to his bed chamber. Once inside he looked at the uncomfortable form of Rin. “I need you to massage my shoulders.” He stated matter-of-factly.

“What happened to the servant who usually does this? Where is he?” Rin asked cautiously.

“To be honest, I could smell him on my new mate. I don’t think he would be able to get these knots out, his mere presence would only make them worse I’m sure.”

“Oh…” Rin said blushing slightly and turning away as he removed his shirt. When he had lain down on his bed she slowly walked over and began to loosen the knots that riddled his shoulders and back. ‘How can he stand it?’ she wondered as she worked apart a particularly large knot. ‘He’s so tense…’ all thought left her as she cautiously ran a hand down his back. He was so muscular! She gulped and blushed when she realized she was becoming aroused. His sense of smell was so great she was positive he would know it too.

Sesshoumaru was in a state of bliss as Rin’s small hands worked all the knots out of his back. And then he sensed her sudden uncomfort, and then her arousal. He smiled inwardly, he hadn’t planed on this. She desired him, just as he desired her. Wait, no, he couldn’t, not only did he have a mate, she was a human! And yet, his feelings were still there. It didn’t matter that she was a human. He decided to ease her worry a little by starting a bit of conversation.

“So Rin, what do you think of the new Lady of the castle?” He asked smirking a bit.

Rin looked down, had he really just asked her that? And was he smirking? She took a gulp, she could be killed for this, but he asked so she would tell him the truth. “I hate her!” oops! She hadn’t meant for it to come out that blunt!

She was surprised to find Lord Sesshoumaru laughing beneath her. “Yes, as do I.”

That knocked her back a few steps, she hated to ask, but she had to know… “Then why did you mate with her?”

“It was an agreement our fathers made before they passed.” He answered, surprised by his own truthfulness. “They believed that it would make a strong alliance, and they were right. Now we are defiantly stronger and can fight the stoat demon tribe.”

“So does that mean war will break out?” Rin questioned

“Yes, we are attacking in three weeks time. Currently messengers are out recruiting able bodied demons.” Why was he being so damn honest with her? And why did it feel so right? Just telling her seemed to lift a bit of the stress he was feeling.

“Wi-will you be fighting my Lord?” Rin asked fearing the answer.

“Yes” he answered solemnly. “But I have been in countless wars; it is not a new concept to me. Therefore I will not lose. The stoats are a fairly new tribe, each with short tempers and prone to fighting, even with their own kin.”

There was a short time in which neither person said anything. Each consumed with their own thoughts. As Sesshoumaru thought of battle tactics and possible weaknesses Rin thought of something entirely different. The more she thought about it the more it pestered her to just ask. He was after all being uncharacteristically open this evening. She took a deep breath and then the plunge.

“Lord Sesshoumaru?”

“Yes.”

“Inu youkai mate for life do they not?” She asked timidly

“Yes” he said slowly

“So what would happen if your mate fell in battle? Would you be able to take another mate?”

Sesshoumaru stiffened beneath her. What exactly was she implying? This was an outrage. She was a human. A HUMAN! A disgusting lowlife not worth his time or effort. Only good for cleaning, human! What had he been thinking letting such a creature rub his shoulders? Why was he even speaking to the thing? “We are done now, you may return to your quarters.” He said resuming his usual emotionless self.

“But…”

“LEAVE!” He winced inwardly at his harsh tone.

Rin stumbled backwards to the floor as he suddenly pulled himself upright. She scrambled to her feet bowing low. “Yes my Lord. Please forgive me for disrespecting you so. I need to learn my place.”

And with that she was gone. Sesshoumaru stared at the spot where she had just been standing. Why was he acting this way? He had a mate. He had to be loyal to her, even if she was not loyal to him. This girl was a human, a HUMAN! He loathed humans…didn’t he? Yet all he could think about were those eight simple words ‘Would you be able to take another mate?’ She had never asked if he would take her. She had just simply asked.

He got out of bed and began to pace back and fourth in a restless manner. He should be thinking about the upcoming battle not some infatuation with a human girl! Infatuation? NO! It was nothing of the sort…it was just, curiosity. Yes, that was it, he was merely curious about the girl.

The Western Lord hated it when he was confused! His confusion always seemed to lead to rage. None of this made sense! In his anger he let out a cry to the unblinking moon as he shredded the curtains that hung before the window. It just didn’t make sense. This wasn’t right. Soon his rage melted into sadness. He was bathed in the glow of silvery moonlight as he peered out the window into the twinkling skies. ‘I need to learn my place.’ Rin shouldn’t have to learn her place. That is what he liked about her; even though she was a servant she still had life, personality. If she ‘learned her place’ she would become just another servant. Just a lonely, miserable, servant that served a lonely, miserable, lord.

Rin sat on her small futon clutching her knees to her chest. What had happened? She should have just kept her damn mouth shut! Finally she was talking to her lord, to her love. But she just had to open her mouth. She just had to bring up something he obviously didn’t want to talk about. She should have just been the good little servant and bit her tongue. But she didn’t. She said something stupid and now she felt further away from her lord than ever. She had been so close.

Fate had oh so cruelly brought her closer to him only to tear her away. Damn her curiosity, damn his mate, damn him, damn this war…just damn everything! She shook with rage! This wasn’t fair. Why did she have to be what she was? Why couldn’t she be a demon? Why couldn’t he ever accept her for what she was? Because he was a lord, a lord with a mate. She was foolish to get her hopes up. From now on she decided to do her best to blend in with the other servants and dismiss any and every feeling she ever had towards her master.

Both Rin and Sesshoumaru fell asleep that night determined to forget about the other by the time the sun rose the next day signifying a fresh clean start. Each wishing that it didn’t have to be this way, but knowing it to be true.

At first sunlight Rin arose and headed to the kitchen to begin her duties. She approached the head cook and asked him what he needed. He handed her a list. She glanced at it and then headed outside to collect what was required to make a fit breakfast for her masters. She first stopped outside the chicken coop. She held her breath as she entered the rancid room. She hated this part of the day, chickens smelled particularly bad. She quickly grabbed a dozen eggs and let out her breath as he placed them delicately in her satchel. From there she moved to the gardens to collect the vegetables and herbs on the list.

When she had everything she needed she headed back to the kitchens. The head chef looked at the items she collected he appeared satisfied, but then handed her a knife. “I need you to slaughter and clean a boar.”

Perfect. This day just couldn’t get any better. Rin was gentle at heart, even the thought of killing an animal made her stomach turn. She slowly headed off once more to the Chicken coop, only this time she made a sharp right before she reached it. When she came to a low fence she stopped and peered in. A large number of tamed boars lounged about blissfully unaware of what was about to happen.

She took a few deep breaths calming her nerves before hopping the fence and choosing a particularly fat one. She slit its throat with a quiet sob and dragged it’s carcass outside the fence. Once there she began to slice it open and dig out its organs gagging every now and then and the gruesome sight before her. She could only wonder how horrible war must be; it had to be far worse than this. How could anyone human or demon be so cruel, so cold-hearted as to take another life without remorse?

Was Sesshoumaru dark enough to enjoy war? To enjoy killing? She shook the thought from her head. She was being normal, she was blending in, she was defiantly not thinking about Lord Sesshoumaru. She brought the cleaned boar meat to the chef and then proceeded to go about her normal duties.

Sesshoumaru watched the young girl clean the boar from his window. He pitied her as he saw her gag. She was not cut out for killing. He debated weather or not to go out and help her, but then decided against it. He was forgetting her. And besides, how would it look to others if he worked while his slave sat by and watched? No it was better if he pretended he never saw a thing and went back to getting ready for the day.

As he and his mate sat in the dining hall waiting their breakfast Sesshoumaru managed to block out most of what Kimiko was saying by staring intently at the door waiting for Rin. He just couldn’t forget about her, no matter how hard he tried.

“I just don’t see why we can’t share a room! We are mates after all. It’s outrageous that we don’t share a bed. Mine is big enough for two…”she drabbled on, and then muttered under her breath “Trust me, I know.”

Sesshoumaru heard her but paid her no heed. When the door opened he was disappointed to find not Rin, but the male demon that had slept with his mate the night before. He had to admit, the boy was brave for facing him, that or foolish. Kimiko winked at him as he placed her dish before her, and eyed his backside as he left the room. “You see?” She asked delightedly “Now I actually have an appetite, when that grimy little human served us I was afraid to touch it. Who knows what kind of diseases the little rats carry!”

Sesshoumaru had had enough of this. She had no right to talk down on Rin like that! To say that Rin was dirty when she herself smelled much worse than the flowery scent that surrounded the servant girl. It was infuriating. He stood up silently and walked out of the room. He didn’t care anymore, it didn’t matter that she was a human. He had to find her; he had to speak with his Rin.

“Why are you leaving?” Kimiko pouted “Did I do something wrong?”

Sesshoumaru was tempted to wheel around and tell this disgrace to the demon race that sleeping with another when you had a mate was indeed wrong. But decided against it, he needed her help in the up coming battle. It was better to play ignorant now; he would deal with her later if the stoats didn’t beat him to it.
