"Kohaku!!"

A/N- Now, technically there whould be two other fics before this one. Sesshoumaru was the next to fall (as in, we took him out while all his fans were asleep...), and then Miroku. I was asleep (finally) when both of them were killed off...so I missed the chance to write for them. But Miroku's death will be covered a little bit later. :) But for now...yes...ahh the angst...Kohaku's death.

Warnings: ANGST!!
****************************

Sango never even saw Miroku go down. She was too busy fighting her little brother. When had Kohaku gotten so good?? She sidestepped his nimbly thrown scythe again, wincing as the blade ripped cloth on her arm.

"Kohaku! Stop! Why won't you stop??" She couldn't figure it out. Naraku was dead! Kohaku should have been freed! Instead, the opposite effect seemed to have happened. The last hypnotic suggestion the evil youkai had given the boy seemed to have taken hold of his mind, and refused to be thrown off, now that the only one that had the power to remove it was gone. As he lunged at her again, it became pretty obvious what that suggestion was: to kill her.

"I don't know who you are..." came that horrible dead voice, so like yet so unlike the Kohaku she had known, "but I have to kill you. You have to die." His blank eyes narrowed in concentration as he came at her again.

"Kohaku...I don't want to kill you!" Sango turned to run, to gain some distance between them, but he flung his bola at her, pinning her ankles, and she went down, Hiraikotsu falling at a heavy angle across her back. As Kohaku slowly, calmly even, walked closer, she struggled onto her back, wincing.

Something seemed to struggle in his eyes. Sango held her breath, hoping beyond hope that Kohaku would find the will to fight his way out of this. If not...she was going to have to kill him. Tears ran down her cheeks as the blank look returned to those beloved eyes, and she grasped the hilt of her sword.

"Kohaku! Fight! I know you can fight!! Throw it off!!" He paused, then raised the scythe above his head.

"I can't get you out of my mind...it annoys me. Die." And he swung at her. Sango let out a heartbroken cry and drew her sword, swinging it in a wild counter-arc. It was too easy to impale Kohaku on it. He let out a grunt as the weapon protruded through his back, his life, red and hot, spilling down the sword blade and onto her skin and clothes. He went still, staring at Sango with shocked, bright eyes. His own eyes. She let out a cry and fought her way free of Hiraikotsu's weight despite Kohaku's blood slippery on her hands.

Sitting up, she pulled the sword out and caught her dying brother in a final embrace.

"Kohaku!! I'm so sorry...I promise...you won't be alone for long, Kohaku!!" She ran fingers through his hair and hugged him close.

"Sango...I...I remember...." He whispered into her ear, and Sango's sobs began again as she felt his arms go around her, embracing her back. "Please...take the shard out, Sango...I should have...been dead...a long time ago." He nuzzled against her shoulder, just like he used to do. "Please...I want...peace." He closed his eyes, his arms squeezing her tight.

Sango bit her lip, but how could she deny her twice-dead brother's final request? Bravely, resignedly, she slipped her hand underneath the collar of his yukata, feeling for the bump in his skin where the shard resided. He let out a squeak and held her tighter.

"Sango...I'm scared..." She cried and kissed him sadly.

"Don't be....I'll be there soon...I won't let you die alone." She pulled out the shard, Kohaku's dying words whispered in her ear.

"I love you, sis."
