Chapter Two

Kagome was sitting on a bench enjoying the cool breeze for once. Souta had spent the night with one of his friends so she was free of baby-sitting duty. It had been almost a week since the incident at the shopping center. She had placed it in the back of her mind not liking to dwell on something. At one time she had dreamed of a pair of golden eyes but the last few days either red or green seemed to haunt her. She was sure it was fear that caused them to dwell on her thoughts. The day started out nice, the sun was out but there was a strong wind blowing. She dressed in a red sun dress and white sandals feeling like a change. Several more minutes passed when she heard someone calling her name.

She turned and spotted Keiko running towards her. She was with a group of people heading her way. Her breath caught when she recognized them as the same group from the other day. Keiko's words rang through her head, she'd been looking for her boyfriend and his friend's. One of the guys had to have been her boyfriend. Her first instinct was to run, but she was no coward.

Keiko spotted her friend and called to her. "I'll be back guys." She left her group and went to go chat with the girl.

Yusuke heard Keiko calling to someone and payed no attention. Keiko was well liked in school and had many friends. He didn't feel like meeting any of them. Kieko dismissed herself and ran off. No one else seemed to be paying attention either as they talked amongst themselves. He heard Kurabawa start to laugh, "Hey Yurameshi don't look now but its the pretty girl from the other day."

Kurama stopped talking to Yukina and glanced in the direction Keiko had gone. Sure enough Keiko was standing by a bench talking to the girl from the courtyard.

Kagome held her breath and released it when she saw it was only the one girl coming her way. She didn't know if she could stand there calmly if the others decided to make their way over. "Hello, Keiko." She marked her spot and closed the book.

"What are you doing by yourself? Wanna come over and join us? We are going to have some lunch, you are more than welcome to join us?" Keiko offered. Kagome looked so lonely sometimes.

"I'm not sure if thats a good idea." She was interrupted by her name being called once more. Seemed her friends had found her. Yumi and the others ran up to her. Being out of high school hadn't changed them that much. "Guys, you remember Keiko right."

Nods went all around. And the girl talk started once more. "Wow, who are those cute guys looking over here?" Yumi clapped her hands in front of her. The one with the red hair was to die for, she just had to meet him.

"Well those are my friends. The one in green is my boyfriend Yusuke. Would you girls like to come over and meet them?"

"Would we ever. Can you introduce me to the hot one with red hair? I'm looking for a new boyfriend." Keiko smiled knowing that Kurama wouldn't be interested in the girl. "Sure, I can introduce you. How bout you Kagome do you have a boyfriend?"
She was suprised when everyone around her got quiet.

Kagome heard her question and the pain she thought was buried rose to greet her. Images of Inuyasha went through her mind. What she wouldn't give to hear his voice again. To see his face just once more. "Excuse me, I gotta go." She walked off but not before they saw the tears begin to fall.

Keiko knew the instant she saw her expression she'd stuck her foot in her mouth. She watched her walk away and felt like running after her to apologize.

"Poor Kagome, she still hasn't gotten over it." Yumi said. A year ago Kagome had informed them that her two-timing boyfriend had died. They were never given any details but knew their friend had taken it hard. "Her boyfriend died over a year ago."

"I'm so sorry I didn't know. I feel bad now." Keiko thought of how she felt when Yusuke had died. She had to do something, she'd hurt the girl. She excused herself and ran off to stop Kagome.

Yusuke and the others watched the group of teenage girls walk up to Keiko and the other girl. Of course Kurama and Hiei were straining to hear what was being said. Kurama actually flinched when one of them asked to be introduced to him. Hopefully, Keiko knew better, then maybe not. He heard Hiei's soft chuckle and grunted. They both held their breath at Keiko's next question, did she have a boyfriend. They saw the girl walk off in tears. Kurama's first instict had been to go comfort the girl but didn't think she'd appreciate someone she didn't know trying to hug her. Then they heard, "Her boyfriend died over a year ago."

Kurama felt sorry for the girl. And felt like an ass because deep down he was glad the girl was single. Hiei was having the same thoughts but would never admit it outloud. "Where the hell is Keiko going?" Yusuke shouted. He decided to sit down beside Shizuru who was already getting some food out.

Keiko spotted Kagome sitting on a swing and went to take the one beside her. "I'm sorry. I had no idea."

Kagome looked up and smiled. "Its okay. I guess its silly of me to get so upset after all this time."

"No, its not. I lost Yusuke one time and there were other times when I thought I'd lose him again. I understand your pain Kagome. I'm here for you if you ever want to talk." She reached out and grabbed her hand.

"Thank you, I didn't mean to run off like that. I pulled you away from your friends. And mine but I think I did you a favor there." She laughed and Keiko joined her. "I'm sure Yumi has already went and introduced herself to your friend. She's guy crazy."

"I'm sure Kurama can handle himself."

So his name was Kurama, the green eyes finally had a name. Maybe it was time for her to move on and get on with her life. Inuyasha would want her to be happy as long as it wasn't with Kouga. The image of them fighting brought another smile to her face. Her stomach growled reminding her that she hadn't eaten lunch yet.

Keiko heard it, "See you are hungry, lets go get something to eat. I'll introduce you to Yusuke and the others. You'll like them they are great." She grabbed her hand and dragged her off not giving her time to refuse.

'Wait a minute,' Panick filled her. Wasn't Yusuke the one that had caught her. 'Great Kagome what are you going to do now? She's taking you to them. How can I get out of it without being too obvious I didn't want to meet them.' She could see the group now, they were sitting at a picnic table getting ready to eat. Her friends were standing in the same spot. Probably waiting for Keiko to come back so they could be introduced to the guys they had decided to be their next prey.

Kurama could still hear the girls chatting away. Dammit they were waiting on Keiko to come back so they could be introduced to him. He was use to girl's flocking him like vultures but sometimes they were annoying. He was looking for someone special in his life but him being what he was it was hard. He'd yet met a girl he thought would understand his demon side. Most people didn't even know that demons existed. He was hoping Keiko wouldn't come back anytime soon and they'd give up and leave. A few minutes Keiko did return. He heard Yusuke call to her.

He could swear he heard Hiei snicker when the herd of girls were obviously making their way towards them but he refused to turn around. He didn't feel like putting up with any chattering girl. He saw Yusuke tense and glare towards the girls. He turned around and saw Keiko had gotten the girl named Kagome to join them. He watched them approach keeping his eyes on her. Sadness radiated from her in waves and once again he had the urge to comfort her. 'It's rude to stare,' Hiei spoke to him telepathically.
He turned his eyes toward the fire demon sitting across him that was smirking. He answered his friend, 'Like you are the one to talk.'

Kagome tried not to let her nervousness show. 'Just act like yesterday didn't take place. You did nothing wrong. But they might want to know why you did it. Here goes nothing.' She saw Kurama stand up as they approached. Keiko sent the introductions for all the girls. Kagome took in all their names, finally red eyes had a name also. She politely uttered a hello to everyone keeping her eyes from landing on anyone in particular. The big ugly one invited them all to sit down but there wasn't enough room. Her jaw dropped when Yumi quickly sat down next to the red head. Which caused him to blush, 'Didn't think he could get any cuter. Guess I was wrong. Not that it matters seems she's about to sink her claws into him. Why should I even care? He's not my boyfriend and its not like he'd ever be interested in me.'

Kuwabara convinced Yusuke to help him pull over another table to combine the two. After rearranging the two tables everyone took a seat. Her friends starting fighting who would get the other side next to Kurama causing Kagome to start laughing. She shrugged and took a seat next to Hiei. He glanced her way as she sat down. "Mind if I sit here?"

"I could care less where you sit." The fire demon snapped.

'Was he just rude to me? What did I do to him? Oh yeah thats right.' Kagome sat down counting to ten silently in her head. Her friends were still arguing about who got to sit next to Kurama. "Idiots," she mumbled low enough for no one to hear. Or so she thought.

"We agree on something it would seem." Hiei commented loud enough just for her to hear. He felt his pulse race when she turned and smiled at him. "I don't see the point in fighting over him."

"Well I guess you'd have to be human to understand." She said without thinking about it. 'Shit!'

He turned to her once more. So the girl knew he wasn't human. What was she? He sniffed the air around her. Definitely human but her smell held a sweet scent that lingered around her. She was no average human and it intriqued him.

"Actually, your friend is lucky they haven't tried to plant themselves on his lap. They tend to lose all common sense when it comes to someone they find cute." Kagome watched as Kurama pried Yumi's hand off his shoulder.

"I take it you don't put yourself in the same catagory as them?"

"Well I haven't tried to sit in your lap yet have I?" Kagome said without thinking. 'Doh, what is wrong with me? I just let him know I thought he was cute.' She blushed hoping he didn't catch on to what she just said.

Hiei caught on to the fact and for some odd reason was pleased that she found him attractive. Shizuru was yelling at her lame brother about something behind them. He chuckled when he saw her land a punch on the side of the baka's head. He glanced over at Kurama and decided to have some fun with the kitsune. 'Having fun fox?'

'Loads, wanna trade spots with me?' Kurama felt the girl's hand on his thigh once more. He was trying to be polite but she was starting to irk him.

'No thanks, I like the company over here better.' Hiei cut off the mind connection knowing he'd just made the fox jealous. He felt the girl staring at him and returned the stare. He thought she'd turn away but she continued to gaze at him.

Kagome heard him chuckle softly to himself and had felt the strings pull at her heart. He had a beautiful laugh though barely audible. At closer inspection he wasn't as short as she'd first thought him to be. He was only about two inches shorter than she was. Unlike most shorter guys she'd known he wasn't wiry or skinny. She could sense the strength hidden beneath the blue tank top and black pants he wore. She was willing to bet that if his arms were any indication he was very well muscled underneath all that. 'Fuck girl get ahold of yourself. You are thinking about what he looks like without his clothes on.' He turned to catch her gaze and she couldn't break away. She could see the deep emotions swirling within the red depths and felt drawn. She saw someone that had suffered as much as she, if not more.

"If you two continue to stare at each other you'll go crosseyed," Shizuru lit her cigerette and laughed when the two broke off the staring contest and blushed. The others stopped to look down at them.

Hiei felt the penetrating eyes of Yusuke and Kurama on him. Everyone started eating and Keiko handed him a plate. He placed all his attention on the meal before him. Keiko set a plate before the girl and she accepted with a thanks. He watched her from the corner of his eye. She barely ate anything merely picked at her food. "You have no need to diet."

Kagome heard him and glanced up but his attention was once again on his food. 'Did he just compliment me?' She tried to eat some but her thoughts were in turmoil. 'Why am I stressing myself? So I think two guys are cute. I'm a teenage girl and I'm not getting any younger. I think I'm the only virgin I know.'

"Hojo," the girl with the head-band starting waving causing Hiei to look up and Kagome to tense.

Kagome heard the name and felt like hiding under the table. After all these years he was still after her, the dumbass couldn't take a hint. She watched him walk over to say hello to her friends and shrunk the instance he spotted her.

"Ahhh Kagome, glad to see you are feeling better." He left the other's to walk to her end of the table. "Now that I've ran into you, I was wondering if you'd like to hit a movie with me tomorrow night?"

"Sorry Hojo, I kind of made plans already." Kagome crossed her fingers hoping he'd take the hint.

"No you don't Kagome. You told me yesterday on the phone you were planning to stay home tomorrow night." Yumi smiled. Once again trying to take a hand in her love life. "I think a movie will be good for you."

'I'm going to kill her. Now what do I say?' Kagome started to fidget under his penetrating stare.

Hiei thought of smacking the girl clinging to the fox. It was obviously Kagome didn't want to go out with the guy but was about to be railroaded into going. "She's already made plans with me." He looked the boy in the face, waiting to see his answer to that.

Everyone gasped at the comment and a fork was heard somewhere hitting the table. "Umm okay, I'm sorry I didn't realise you and Kagome were dating. Pardon my rudeness. Well its nice to see you again Kagome." He walked off waving goodbye to the group.

Kagome knew her face was ten shades of red. 'Did he just lie for me?' She turned to look at the little demon who was still watching Hojo's retreating back. She almost felt like hugging him at the moment. For a minute she knew she was about to be forced to accept a date she didn't wanna go on. His quick thinking had saved her from a night of being bored. "Thanks," she said loud enough just for him to hear.

"Hnnn."

Kuwabara was the first to break the silence. "So where you guys going?"
