2.The Tale

Chapter Two

Rae showed Kagome to a large table next to two double windows. The sun was already shining into the study adding more light than needed. Rae had already taken out a few books leaving them on the table. She wasn't sure what the girl was interested in just yet. "Anything special you're looking for?"

"I'm not sure to be honest. I don't even know where to begin. I wanna go ahead and thank you even if I don't find what I'm looking for." Kagome took a seat and picked up a book thumbing through. For a minute she crossed her eyes and wondered if she had been the one slipped sake. The letters in front of her didn't make any sense. She looked up when Rae giggled.

"Some of these are written in a form of ancient Japanese. Actually most of them are, I'm afraid. My father believes that two of these books date over seven hundred years ago. I'm glad to help actually, nice to find someone that is interested in the same thing as me to be honest. I can translate the ones you can't read and help you look. You just gotta tell me what you are looking for."

Kagome paused for a minute, that presented a problem. How could she tell a girl she didn't know about her journey into the past. If she sat here and told her that she was in love with a boy that lived over 500 years ago, she'd call her crazy and demand that she leave.

Rae sensed her hesitation. "Not sure if you wanna tell me huh. Well something has you interested in this stuff." She paused for a minute. "Tell you what. I'll let you in on a little secret as to why I'm interested then maybe you can tell me why you are interested. But first let me show you this."

She reached across and pulled a book towards them. "This book here speaks of a great evil that was destined to bring upon the downfall of all demons or youkai." She showed Kagome but this book to was written in the strange language and appeared to be very old. The pages were yellow and brittle. "This here states the begining of a curse. Seems that over 700 years ago during a time when youkai roamed the earth ruling over man kind. It speaks of a holy family containing three siblings, two male and one female. All with astonishing powers of purification. The males weren't satisfied with their lot in life. We shouldn't be suprised there men are never happy but back to the story. The female loved her gift and used it to help others and to protect them from demons. The two males thirsted for power, again no suprise there. Deciding that their human bodies were a restriction they used a ritual to try to transform themselves into gods. To become gods, destroy all the youkai and rule over humanity. Supposedly the female sibling found out what they were planning and consulted with her village elder. Taking the daughter of the elder, she went to put a stop to them. Seems this ritual could only be done during a black moon which occurs every 300 years. As the ritual was being completed the priestess used her purification powers to stop the transformation and the blood of elder's daughter to seal them inside a tomb. As the seal was forming their curses were heard taunting her, that she would not be there during the next black moon. They swore to rise and complete their goal."

"Is that what happened to all the demons?" Kagome found her voice.

"Well, see this book here." She grabbed the first book Kagome had reached for. "This one says that the black moon came once again. As they had forseen, no one with holy powers strong enough was there to stop them. Its written here that the only way for them to be stopped was the soul of their sister that had been said to be sealed inside a jewel and the blood of the sealer. The soul and blood was the only flaws to the ritual hence their only weakness. If you scan to the later chapters it states that neither were to be found which brought down the fall of youkai."

Kagome sat there and listened intently. A powerful priestess whose soul was said to be sealed inside a jewel. She knew what jewel of which it spoke. The very one Kikyo had used to destroy Naraku's soul and in turn sending her back to this time. Thats why the jewel hadn't been there when it was needed. Kagome could only guess that during that battle between Midoriko and that last demon seeing that her body would soon perish she had sealed her soul knowing it would be needed. Even in her last moments of life the priestess had been trying to preserve the lives of others. Demons and humans alike had been trying to use its powers for almost two centuries not realizing it would be needed to save them.

"Kind of unbelievable isn't it?"

Kagome smiled at the girl, "No, not really. So why did you get interested in all this anyway?"

"Okay, you got to promise not to laugh and call me an idiot." She pulled out another book. "This one shows family trees of all kinds of humans and youkai alike. This one shows the tree of the three siblings." Kagome glanced over at the page and sure enough Midoriko's name was listed. "This one of the village elder. The names really mean nothing to me but this is what caught my attention. See here, this design here. It's said to be the family crest." At her nod she continued. "This was the first book I ever read containing anything historical. Before that it was all romance and sci-fi." She bent down giving Kagome her back. "Lift up my hair and tell me what you see."

Kagome grabbed the girls hair trying not to pull any strands. Right at her hairline she saw it, the same design scribed on the page. "So you are a descendant or something like that."

"I guess, unless you believe in recarnation. But I don't see if I were some reincarnation why I'd be born in this time when I would have been needed over 500 years ago. Unless my suppose to be father of centuries ago accidently let me slide down the crack of his wife's ass. 'Ooops dear there goes mankind's last hope, grab me a towel would ya.' So Kagome now its your turn, spill the beans."

"Ummmm," she was still hesistant about telling this strange girl about her past. The more she thought about it she wanted to believe she'd been sent back to the future for a reason. 'We both were born around the same time. I was born with shikon jewel within my body and she bears the mark of blood needed. I am Kikyo's recarnation, who became the protector of the jewel. Is it possible she and I were suppose to go back together? No, that couldn't be right. When she'd left everything was still okay. Was she pulled through the well before she was suppose to go through? Was she sent back because the other person needed to stop it from happening was still in the present time. If that was so it didn't matter anymore because the jewel was gone. "You are going to think I'm totally nuts and call the asylum."

Rae took a seat across the girl, "Try me."

"Okay," Kagome began her story. Telling the first person besides her family of her adventures through the well. For over three hours the girl sitting oposite of her didn't say a word. Sat listening taking in every word that was spoken. Kagome told of how she was pulled through the well on her 15th birthday and the jewel coming from her body. She spoke of Inuyasha and her friends, of the fight against Naraku trying to complete the jewel once more. Finally, she explained how the jewel was used and of her ending back in their time no longer being able to travel through the well.

"Kagome we moved here a year ago before that we were living in northern japan. My dad was at a dig sight, it was found under a woman's house to be exact. Her underground plumbing went haywire causing a big mess. During the clean up some old artifacts were found. Before they could finish excavating the sight there was an accident, the ground collapsed underneath several of the diggers. My father fell several feet breaking his legs in the process. He told me that when he came to the workers were trying to make their way to him. He said within arms reach he spotted something glowing. Being my father he picked it up and brought it home. After he got out the hospital he suddenly decided to move here, said he had always wanted to live here. Come follow me," she waved for Kagome to follow.

They made their way up the long staircase leading to the second story. Kagome looked around seeing that they were alone. They entered a room off to their left. On first glance, the bedroom looked much like her brother's. Clothes were scattered everywhere and the bed was unmade. She realized that they were in Rae's father's bedroom.

"Gotta hurry before he comes home. He left right after you called to pick up a few things from his office." She took her to lean down beside the bed.

Rae pried the loose floor board up using her nails, cursing when one chipped against the wood. After removing the board and placing it aside she reached into the hole and withdrew a box. It was an average jewelers box, brown cardboard nothing special. Except there were scrolls wrapped around it, wards from the appearance. She handed the box to Kagome, "Hold that while I put this back." After everything was back in place they made their way out the room.

"Lets head to my room where we won't be disturbed." They headed across the hall. Kagome didn't need to open the box to know what was inside. Upon removing it from the floor even with the wards, she felt that tug on her soul. Her soul told her that the sacred jewel had found its way back to her.

"Do you believe in destiny Rae?" Kagome was sitting upon the girl's bed holding the jewel.

"Kind of, I think everything happens for a reason. Here's what I'm thinking. You were suppose to originally stay in the fuedal era but for some reason my sire- to- be accidently pulled out causing me not to be born. So maybe you came back because this was were I was? Not like it matters now, its already happened right."

"But what if I could change it? Maybe I wasn't meant to go back until we had met. You said so yourself your father said he'd always wanted to live here. Who's to say we wouldn't have met one day anyway." Kagome stared at the girl pleading. "Maybe fate had to re-adjust itself because I went back too soon. Some of my friends are demons, maybe it's possible to save them."

"Wait a minute do you hear yourself Kagome. You told me how you were hunted by demons because of the jewel. Do you really want to save a species that would kill you without thinking twice? I mean the world is fine how it is, isn't it? Besides, in order to do it you'd need my help. Dealing with horny frat boys is one thing but dealing with demons is another. I like my head where it is thank you. I wanna live to hit twenty-one."

"I guess you are right but I don't know if I can just sit here and do nothing." Kagome stood and took the girl's hand. "Will you think it over please?"

"Kagome you said so yourself the well was sealed. What makes you think we could even get through?" Rae could feel the girl's desperation and it started to make her feel like a real bitch.

"Will you atleast try with me? If we were meant to meet and go back together then we will get through. If not I'll give the jewel back to you and you can forget you ever saw me in the library."

Rae sighed knowing no matter what happened she wouldn't be able to forget the strange girl she'd met just yesterday.
