Chapter 3: Adventures in Demon Sitting

Miroku’s eyebrow twitched. It was a matter of pride that he could sweet talk older women into giving him what he wanted, whether a nourishing meal or a comfortable room for the night; but Azarni was proving difficult to charm. The stubborn old goat was no one’s fool and refused to even attempt reversing her spell.

When Miroku realized he was flexing the fingers of his cursed hand, the irritated monk decided to temporarily accept defeat. “It would be impractical to suck the only person capable of ending the hex into my wind tunnel.”

Desiring to end the argument without further alienating the aggravated miko, Miroku slyly suggested a temporary truce. “Lady Azarni, obviously we will be unable to effectively think of a solution until dear Kaede is settled into a new shelter. Perhaps Sango-chan and Kagome-sama could assist moving Lady Kaede into the village headman’s spare room.”

Huffily agreeing, Azarni indignantly stalked toward Kaede. It took all of his religious training to prevent Miroku from sticking his tongue out at the stiffly retreating figure.

Miroku calmly walked toward Sango. Inwardly, he was giggling hysterically. Sango was now straddling Ginta, her knees pinning his claws to the ground while maintaining her chokehold around Hakkaku’s neck.

“Lady Sango, may I assist you?”

“No thank you, Miroku-sama, I believe our good friends are willing to behave now. Is that not so?” she asked. Sango applied pressure as she stated, “Otherwise, I shall have to assert myself.” Ginta whimpered and Hakkaku let out a strangled sound; they knew when they were whipped.

Sango slowly released the two wolf demons. Hakkaku and Ginta muttered about aggressive ningen females as they picked themselves up from the ground.

“Miroku-sama, were you able to convince Azarni to return Inu Yasha and Kouga back to normal?”

“Sadly, no. Lady Azarni claims she is unable to reverse the spell. Fortunately, the curse should only last about a week.”

“A week!” chorused Hakkaku and Ginta. “How are we gonna explain to the pack that our leader is now four years old?” shouted Ginta.

Hakkaku ran his claw through his Mohawk in aggravation as he said, “I can think of at least five wolves wanting to take control away from Kouga. The fights are gonna be nasty.”

“Why tell them, then?” asked Sango.

“Well they might be a little suspicious when Kouga arrives crawling into the den!”

“Calm down, Ginta,” soothed Miroku. “The transformation will only last a week. Leave him here and simply tell the pack Kouga is following leads as to the whereabouts of Naraku. No one would question his determination to avenge the pack.”

“I s’pose Kouga could be gone a week without too many wolves questioning it,” said Hakkaku.

“Then it is settled,” said Miroku. “Kouga will stay here with Inu Yasha while you return to the den tomorrow and manage pack affairs.”

At the mention of Inu Yasha, the two demons and Sango looked at Miroku as if he were insane. “Miroku-sama, Inu Yasha and Kouga’s battles over Kagome were petty and childish as grown men imagine the fights they will have as actual children.”

“Hmm, I see your point Sango. We shall have to keep them separated. How hard could it be to control two children? They can not possibly be worse than Shippo after he has eaten too much chocolate.”

It was agreed that while the women assisted Kaede, Hakkaku and Ginta would watch over Kouga on the village outskirts and Miroku would watch Inu Yasha within the center of the village. Smirking, Miroku held a sleeping Inu Yasha while watching the two wolf demons try to corral Kouga. Miroku laughed to himself, thinking “That little devil can really move and I don’t think he’s even using his shards.” Snickering, Miroku walked away with Inu Yasha before the two demons could think to ask for his help.
