InuTaishou's Third Lover

"Lord InuTaishou!" called Inuyasha.

He ran and jumped. Getting closer to the Eastern Village with each leap. He could feel the power
strengthen as well. He could smell his father and brother. And a miko. A miko with the Shikon no Tama.
He arrived there the next day. InuTaishou and Sesshoumaru were not there, though he knew they did not leave yet. He followed the scent of the miko to the shrine. He was careful not to anger her, when he saw the arrows in the corner.

"So you're the one. The miko my father wanted to see."

"Yes, and you must be Lord Inuyasha."

"Well, yes. Where is my father?"

"He is taking your elder brother Sesshoumaru to the river. I believe they wish to bathe."

Inuyasha blushed and realized that he too could use a bath. His ears were almost brown with dirt and his
hair was tangled. His clothes had been bloodied in a battle he had long forgot about. Kikyou looked into
his face, soft and yet aggressive. Yet she found comfort in his soft metalic amber eyes, unlike those of his father and Sesshoumaru.

"You're name is Kikyou?"

He read the small wooden sign over the shrine. And looked back at her, it was a fitting name. The
Chinese Bell Flower, Kikyou. That’s where her name came from. To Inuyasha, she was a flower, just as
delicate and beautiful. He started to blush and was embarrassed that he had nothing to say.

"So... what did Lord InuTaishou want? He did ask you anything forward or stupid did he?"

"No, no. He simply wanted me to protect his three swords."

"Three? I didn't know he even had three."

"Yes, Tetsusaiga, Tenseiga, and Sounnga."

"And they were too powerful for him to handle so he gave them to you to watch over?"

"Yes. That's right. He said he would not want to risk losing them in battle."

"Oh... okay..."

Inuyasha bowed shortly and left. Kikyou was amazed by the somewhat more gentle one of the family.
Maybe it was his heritage that softened him.

"Kikyou, I must leave today. I cannot risk another day of leaving the Western Lands alone and open to our
enemies."

"I see. And what would you wish me to do with your swords?"

"Keep them for me. I want you to also take care of Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru. I don't want them in this
war. Keep them safe."

InuTaishou and Kikyou sat in her hut talking about this. InuTaishou rose and let his lips gently brush against hers before he left.

Kikyou sat in utter amazement. 'But why?... Does he really? Even so, I cannot.' She watched him leave, slowly fading into the distance until he was merely a white speck on the horizon. She then snapped back to reality when she felt Inuyashas presance behind her. He ran at her and she had to pin his sleeve to a tree, to keep him for attacking her.

"What the hell?"

"Don't come after the jewel. I warn you."

Kikyou walked away before he could say anything. She couldn't believe he would just attack her, after he seemed so nice. She walked into Sesshoumaru who was looking for her.

"Kikyou, Inuyasha is planning to..."

"I know. I've pinned his kimono down. It will take time for him to get back here."

"You are smart."

"Spare me, do you not wish for the jewel as well?"

"No, I do not want this creation. This thing, I veiw it as evil. It is no use to anyone, I wish it destroyed."

"I will be in the shrine."

Kikyou was angry, how could he? And she was supposed to take care of him?

"I'll take care of him." she said to the darkness.

Lighting insensce and candles she started to pray, hoping that she would see the jewel through its demise and that it become a burden to no one. Another sound, and she realized that it was Inuyasha. He burst through the door to face Kikyou, arrow loaded.

"If you have come for the jewel, then you know that you will not suceed!"

Inuyasha stopped, looking carefully into the meaningful eyes of the priestess. He sat down beside the door and closed his eyes, waiting for Kikyou to calm down.

"Inuyasha, you understand. I cannot give up the jewel to anyone. Weather I am to protect you as well or not."

"Protect...? Spare me, I don't NEED protecting."

"Then why has your father asked me to do so?"

"Because he's a ruthless idiot. Rushing off into a war he knows nothing about, he'll probably end up dying this time."

Kikyou gasped, "But he can't! What am I to do with these weapons?"

"Keep em'." Inuyasha laughed. "He couldn't use one, he's to fond of his youkai form."

"Youkai form?"

"Yeah, he's an Inu youkai, a dog demon. He can transform into a human form when he wants to, but his true form is of a great dog. Sesshoumaru's the same way."

"Can you turn into a dog?"

"No."

Kikyou realized that this was because he was a half breed, and with only half his fathers blood, he could not transform into anything.

"Inuyasha."

"What is it Kikyou?"

"Don't forget, I'm still protecting you."

Kikyou smiled blowing out the candles and walked out to the village. Inuyasha stood in shock, watching her go down the road.

Inuyasha looked down from the tree. Kikyou had to bind him to another tree. Inuyasha gasped, watching her put her arrow down.

"Hey, aren't you ever gonna kill me?"

"Stop coming after the jewel, I have no wish to waste more arrows."

Inuyasha grumbled and moaned and finally managed to get down. He was so angry he started to walk, without even caring where he ended up.

Nearly an hour later in the full sun he came upon a waterfall. Watching the river flowing over the high edges of the rocks, he noticed Kikyou. She was at the bottom of the falls, slowly dumping a pail of water over herself. Her white haori was almost transparent. Her hair was strung around her, weighed down by the water. He breathed lightly so as not to alarm her. He just watched the sun play with the water in her hair, making it shine. She rose and then she got into the water, the ends of her haori flowing in the path of the river. Her hair wrapping around her, smiling into the wind. The sakura petals blowing by, and her long arms reaching out to catch them.

"Ki... Kikyou..."

Maybe it was then that he fell in love. Maybe it was the first time he had ever seen her. Maybe it was there all all along, and he had never realized. He hadn't realized that he loved her.

After that day, he followed her. Watching her tend to the village, waiting for her to walk past him. Wishing she would say something. But even when she did walk by him, barely a smile escaped her. And she would walk on, continuing her duties. Even taking care of the children, teaching them the vital facts of survival, showing them which herbs are good to eat and good for healing. They were good students, and they learned fast. Inuyasha knew this from watching them all from a nearby tree. Mostly he was watching Kikyou, and he knew that he couldn't conceal his longing.

"Inuyasha, I know you are watching. Please, come join me."

Inuyasha came out from the brush and branches he was hiding behind. How the hell did she know? He guessed that he was being obvious in his following her. But she could always sense his presance there, watching her all the time.

"It is the first time we have spoken like this."

"Yeah, so what's your point."

"Inuyasha, what do you think of me? Do I seem ordinary?"

"Where are you going with this?"

"Inuyasha, I must not show my weaknesses to anyone, I must never waiver. If I did, a demon would get the better of me."

Inuyasha sighed feeling guilty, and listened.

"Inside I am an ordinary woman, yet I cannot reveal myself as such. We are both different like this, both outsiders. That is why I was never able to kill you."

"Quit whining, we all have our cross to bear."

Inuyasha started to walk off but his heart told him to stay. He looked back to see Kikyous face. What a sad lonley look she had, like she was empty inside.

"You're right, I shouldn't complain."

The wind flew by, playing with their hair, and Inuyasha fell to his knees.

"Kikyou I..."

"Inuyasha, you are half demon correct?"

"Yeah...so..."

"You wish the jewel to become a full demon do you not?"

"Yeah, obviously..."

"What if you could become human? Would you agree to that?"

"Me? Become a human?"

"It is true. Since you are half demon, but you are also half human."

"What would happen to the jewel?"

"The jewel can be used for good or evil, and in the wrong hands can bring disaster. But if it were to turn you into a human, the Jewel of Four Souls would be purified. It would probably cease to exist."

"But if I turned into a human, what would happen to you?"

"My duty is to protect the jewel. Without it, I can live my live as an ordinary woman."

Inuyasha thought, and knew he could do it. He sat before Kikyou now, staring into the depth of her brown eyes. His heart coudn't contain his feelings and longer. He hugged her tightly, she struggled at first but then realized that she couldn't hold in her feelings either.

"Kikyou I... I love you. You have no idea."

"I love you too Inuyasha."

"Kikyou, I'll do it. I'll become human, I'll stay with you and we can live together."

"Inuyasha? You really will?"

"Yes Kikyou. I will, I'll do anything for you."

Kikyou hugged him back now, with all the strength she had in her body. Inuyasha held her like this for a long time. Kikyou yawned and Inuyasha picked her up, walking back to the village to put her to bed.

Laying her down and pulling a sheet over her, he kissed her forehead.

"Inuyasha, stay here. Please?"

Inuyasha smiled and lay down next to her. She shifted on top of him and fell asleep. His arms around her, smelling her strong perfume. Falling into his own dreams.
