A New Path

Kagome burst into Kaede’s hut, slamming the wooden door shut before Inuyasha could follow. The old miko looked up in alarm when the door slammed.

“Gracious child, what ever is the matter?” Kaede asked.

“I have a question about the Shikon Jewel, that I don’t want Inuyasha to hear.” Kagome said.

“Well, go on, ask. Though my sister was much more familiar with the Jewel than I am, I will try to answer your question.”

“Can the power of the Jewel be used to wish someone back to life?”

“Yes. If the person should continue living, the Jewel will bring him/her back and disappear. However, if the person led an impure life, the Jewel will be corrupt permanently. My sister, for example, led a pure life, but is not meant to live any longer, and her return will corrupt the Jewel. Why do you ask such a question child?” Kaede answered.

“Inuyasha is planning on using the Jewel to return Kikyo to life. He wishes to bring her back and become a human all at once.” Kagome said.

“Well, that wish sort of cancels itself out. That kind of wish will not corrupt or purify the Jewel. Perhaps Inuyasha should think of a different wish.”

“I can’t talk to him about it; he doesn’t know that I know what he is planning. I overheard him talking to Kikyo. How can I stop him from making this wish?” Kagome asked.
“Child, the only thing you can do is Sit Inuyasha right as he is about to make the wish, and make one yourself. Just remember that you cannot wish for something to happen to someone else, with the exception of returning that person to life.” Kaede said.

“We are so close to destroying Naraku, I don’t think I can come up with another wish in that short amount of time.” Kagome said sadly.

“You must not allow Inuyasha to return my sister to life. She does not want him; she is merely using him to get her life back. Kikyo will destroy Inuyasha if she gets half a chance. You don’t have a choice Kagome, you must think of another wish. Or the Jewel will never be destroyed.” Kaede said.

“I’ll think about it. I should get back outside before the others worry, and before Inuyasha gets suspicious. Thank you Kaede.” Kagome said.

“Good luck child. You will need it.” Kaede responded
Kagome left Kaede’s hut in more despair then when she entered. She didn’t know what she could do to stop Inuyasha’s corrupt wish. Her heart still felt the pain of Inuyasha’s choice, and she had no one to turn to. They needed Inuyasha’s strength as a half demon if they were to survive the demons that were also in search of Jewel Shards.
Shippo brought Kagome abruptly out of her dark thoughts.

“Kagome you’re back! Did you bring any more candy with you?” Shippo asked excitedly jumping onto Kagome’s shoulder.

“I’m sorry Shippo, I wasn’t there long enough to get candy. I decided to leave my backpack there. I’m not going home again until we finish finding the Shards.” Kagome answered, making a quick decision. “Speaking of the Jewel, where are Miroku and Sango? We should get going. We’re so close to the end of our journey.”

“They made camp just outside the village borders. They’re waiting for you and Inuyasha to return. I came here to see if you were back yet.” Shippo said.

“Shippo, I haven’t been gone for more than a few hours, and I’m usually gone for at least two days. Why were you in such a hurry for me to get back?” Kagome asked.

“Because we saw Sesshomaru headed for the well, and I’ve been worried.”

At the mention of Sesshomaru, Kagome’s heart constricted. She thought of the way he bought her bogus story, and the way he saved her from making a fool of herself when Kikyo and Inuyasha were talking. His initial grip had been hard and demanding, but had softened as he heard Inuyasha’s cruel words. It almost seemed that he was trying to comfort her as Inuyasha unknowingly ripped her heart to pieces. Suddenly thoughts of the Demon Lord of the West no longer brought fear to her.

“Sesshomaru did show up at the well, and he fell through with me to my time. But I managed to convince him that we traveled over distance only, and he didn’t try to hurt me once we reached my time.” Kagome said.

“Well, we better get back to them. I’m sure Inuyasha has gotten to the camp by now.”

“Did you talk to Inuyasha Shippo?”

“Yeah, he asked me where the other’s were.” Shippo said.

“Well, let’s head over to the camp before they think that something happened to us.”

Sorry that the updating is a little slow, but i'm working on each chapter between updates, and i'm at home not school so my internet access is limited.
