Chapter 2: Neighbors... It’s Always Nice To Have Them Right?

February 15, 2004

Inuyasha was standing in front of his parents tombs, with a red rose on his hand.

“Hi Mom, Hey Dad... I miss you...” With that said he proceeded to kneel in front of the tombs, put the red rose on his mother’s grave and began telling them of the news of his job, his everyday life, the perverted things Miroku insisting on doing. An hour later, he was done telling them everything and was time to go back. As he did every year, with Zoltan at his feet, Inuyasha made the same promise he had done since he was seventeen.

“I promise. I will avenge your deaths. I will catch Naraku even if it is the last thing I do. And you wanna know something, the bastard has been doing some stuff, and then blaming it on me... Well, not me me, but The Hanyou. I am chased now, both by the police and Naraku...” He sighed thinking about the last crime Naraku had committed and blamed it on him. ‘I mean come on, people should realized that I’m not the bad guy! And the last victim lived in Kyoto... I’ve never even set a foot in Kyoto...’ He sighed again.

“Well Mom, Dad, I have t. An. And don’t worry, I know that wherever you are you are proud of me” He said with a teasing smirk, that became a soft smile when the next words came from his mouth. “I love you. I’ll see you both on your birthdays, goodbye.” With that he stood and began walking towards his car, Zoltan at his side. “Well, Zolt, shall we go home now?” The dog barked once as if saying yes and they both head off to the apartment.

Reaching his floor and walking outside the elevator a entrancing scent reached his nose. Even though his smell was better without his human appearance, his senses were still far keener than a normal person. ‘Pineapples.’ He thought as he took a deep whiff and smiled down to Zoltan. “You smell it too, don’t you? What do you say we go introduce ourselves, my friend?” He said as he walked down the hall towards his apartment to halt when he saw the moving boxes and the opened door just in front of his own. He heard a female voice coming form the inside.

“...those go here, not there, here!” Inuyasha heard a woman barked those words to someone, her words followed by a man as he came out the door. He was big and by big I mean gigantic. ‘He must be a moving guy.’ Inuyasha thought. The man threw him a look that seemed to say ‘Women’ while he rolled his eyes to then lift one of the boxes that were on the floor and carried it inside. Curious now as to see the woman that had so boldly told the giant where the boxes went he peeked through the door... And his breath caught in his throat.
She was beautiful. Even if only her profile was facing him while she rubbed her temples, he could tell that she was gorgeous. With long braided raven hair that reached her mid back and pretty tall for a woman with her 5’5, her curvy body was left to view with a pair of old jeans that fitted her perfectly and a blue T-shirt. He couldn’t reach to see her eyes but he was sure they were as beautiful as the rest of her. Her face was that of a classical beauty and he soon found himself gapping at her like a fish out of the water. ‘Snap out of it you stupid ass!’ He thought furiously. ‘As if I’d never seen a beautiful woman before, keh!... Though no one has ever smelled this good...’

“Keh!” As soon as the word came out of his lips the beauty he had been contemplating turned her head towards him, big blue-gray eyes settling on his.

*****

Twenty-four year old Kagome Higurashi was not a woman to let herself be intimidated. ‘I wouldn’t be one of the top detectives if I were... What it is with men that they think they can treat us like useless, mindless bimbos just because we have breasts?’ She thought fuming, while glaring at the moving man.

“Put those here, please.” She said politely as the man carried the box. Though she was fuming inside she still had to be polite, thanked her mother for that, even if the rude man treated her as if she was stupid and didn’t know how to carry or accommodate a damn box. So lost she was in her thoughts that she didn’t noticed the man was putting the box somewhere else from where she had requested. That snapped her right back and made her loose her patience.

“I said, those go here, not there, here!” She barked at him while signalling with her hands where “here” was. She saw the man glare at her, scowl on his face, to then put the box down in the correct corner and go outside to grab another box. ‘What is it? Am I speaking in Chinese or something? How can he not understand the concept of what “here” is?’ She thought as she felt the beginning of a headache as she rubbed her temples. She was thinking of going for a walk when she heard a “Keh” sound.

She turned around and met with the most amazing purple eyes that she had ever laid eyes on. ‘He has beautiful eyes...’ The man standing in front of her couldn’t be much older than herself; he was very handsome and had a sad air around him that made one want to cuddle him for comfort. ‘God, he is tall... And muscled...’ She thought as her eyes wondered through his body taking in the great shape he was in. He was smirking, and that made her eyes rest on his full lips. ‘What am I saying? Get a grip Kagome!’ When she realized that she was staring at him like a fool she snapped back. She blinked as if coming out from a spell and said:

“Hello. Can I help you with something?”

Hearing her voice, Inuyasha also snapped back from staring her voluptuous red lips that screamed to be kissed.

“Hum... Hi.” ‘God, you’re such a fucking conversationalist!’ He thought sarcastically. “I just wanted to introduce my self-” A loud bark interrupted him. He had completely forgotten about Zoltan. “... And my dog,” he preside with another smirk. “I am your in front door neighbor, Inuyasha Kawamoto. Nice to meet you.” He said as he stretched his hand to hers.

“Kagome Higurashi, a pleasure.” She answered as they shook hands. Kagome felt a bolt of energy passing through but discarded it thinking it was her imagination. She heard another bark and looked down to see a beautiful white fluffy dog with it’s wiggling tail. “And who is this?”

“This is Zoltan.”

“Zoltan? That’s a strange name... Hungarian right?”

“Yes. He was a gift from my parents after a trip to Hungary.”

“He is gorgeous.” She said as she stretched her hand to caress the dog. His fur was soft and fluffy. She scratched him behind the ear and Zoltan gave a content growl. Kagome giggled. “I think he likes me.” She said as she looked up at the man while smiling. She didn’t noticed his in breath or how his throat went suddenly dry, she only saw a nice man and his dog, that were her new neighbors.

“Ma’am were do I put this?” The man said in a gruff tone carrying the last box.

“Put it in the kitchen, you do know where the kitchen is don’t you?” She answered the man, and Inuyasha heard him mumble ‘Stupid bitch.’ under his breath. His eyes narrowed glaring at the vulgar man, but was interrupted by Kagome’s sweet voice.

“Will you excuse me? I have to go on with the moving....”

“Of course. Please don’t hesitate to knock on my door if there is anything you need.”

“Thank you, that is very nice of you, Mr. Kawamoto.”

“Inuyasha, please, Miss Higurashi.”

“Well then Inuyasha, thank you for your offering.” She said.

Inuyasha smiled at her and turned around to leave. Just as he was walking through the door he heard her speak again.

“And it’s Kagome, by the way.” With that she turned to the moving man and started to argue with him about where the box went.

Inuyashaod tod there for a minute before feeling Zoltan nuzzling his hand. Looking down he found his dog looking up at him. He bent down and whispered to him.

“We like her don’t we Zolt? Yes we do...” He then stood and with a last glance to the woman they walked to his apartment.

The rest of the day did not have much of excitment as the morning did, or at least not for Inuyasha. His Sundays were always quiet and peaceful. It was almost dinner time and he was watching the news when there was a knock at the door. He inhaled to see if he knew the person and again that enticing scent which reminded him of pineapple. ‘Kagome.’ He thought as he walked to the door and opened it.

“Hi.” He said as she stared at him.

‘Snap out of it Kagome you’re staring like a moron.’ “Oh, hi... I was wondering if I could borrow a cup of sugar. I run out of it.”

“Sugar? Sure. Come on in, I’ll be right back.”

“Thank you.” She said as she entered the apartment looking around. “Wow, it’s really amazing what you’ve done with it... I hope that mine will some day look like this.”

“I am sure it will.” He yelled from the kitchen.

“Yeah, well. I don’t have much time to do all the decoration and such...” She said a bit melancholic.

“Why?” He said bringing a cup of sugar in one hand. “I mean, if you don’t mind me asking...”

“No, it’s okay. My job doesn’t give me much time off.” She said. “And I have a promise to fulfill.” She whispered to herself.

“What do you do for living?” He asked ignoring her whisper, expecting her to say she was a lawyer or something like that. Imagine his surprise when she answered:

“I am a detective. I was transferred from Kyoto to Tokyo Police Department. You know... Catching the bad guys isn’t a walk in the park.”

‘You don’t have to say it twice... Wait, Kyoto?’ “A detective. I wouldn’t have guess it.” He said as his mind worked to full speed only to stop when hearing her answer.

“Why? Just because I am a woman doesn’t mean that I can’t do the job.” She snapped a bit resentful.

“That’s not what I meant, you don’t have to bite my head off. My mother was a detective and she was one of the top ones.”

“Now that you mention it... Your name does sounds familiar...” She said pensive, as she tried to remember were had she heard his name.

“Yes well... Hey, do you want to stay for dinner?” He asked before he could control himself.

“Stay for dinner?” Kagome asked surprised, jerking off her musings for completely.

“Yes... I mean... Well... You jusved ved in and I am sure that you don’t have much in your fridge and... Never mind, it was a bad idea anyway. Here is the sugar, don’t worry about the cup you can return it to me later.”

Kagome only blinked, several times in fact. ‘Did he just invited me to have dinner and regretted it the next second? Talking about mood swings...’

“Actually I would love to. You are right my fridge is not too full. I mean, if the offer is still up.” Kagome said calmly.

“Keh.” ‘Why do I become some kind of retard when I am around her? This never happened to me before. It must be that damn scent.’ “Well, it’s nothing fancy just ramen, but if you want-”

“I love ramen.” She interrupted him.

‘She loves ramen... Fuck, she is fucking perfect!’ “Great.” He said as he walked to the kitchen and began taking out the ramen.

“Is there anything I can help with?”

“Actually, if you could feed Zoltan that would be wondl.” l.”

“Sure, where do you keep his food.”

“Second cabinet to the right.” He put water on a kettle and began boiling it as he settled two pair of chopsticks and glasses on the counter. ‘Start conversation you idiot!’ “So.hy why where you transferred?”

“Well,” she began as she filled Zoltan’s food on his plate. “I request it.”

“Why?”

“I have two goals as a detective and I couldn’t fulfill neither of them if I stayed in Kyoto.”

“Which are?” He asked as the kettle whistled informing him that the water had boiled. He took it of the fire and filled the two ramen cups with it. He gave Kagome one and they sat on the counter while talking.

“Well, one is to...” She stopped a bit unsure.

“It’s okay, you can tell me.” He said as he filled his mouth with another portion of ramen.

“To find my father’s murderer.” She said in a low voice filled with hatred.

Her tone of voice made Inuyasha shiver, he could smell her hatred for the man who had done that. “I am sorry about your father. You know who his murderer is?”

“Thank you. I have two candidates for that, and one witness that says it was one of the two.”

“Are they known criminals? Or just common men?” He questioned. He was going to try and find the bastard and make him pay.

“I am pretty sure you know both of them. One is Naraku, the King of crime, and the other one...” She stopped again, disappointment and confusion mingling her scent. He waited for her to go on. “The other suspect is The Hanyou.” She turned around when she heard him choke with the ramen. Patting him on the back when he began coughing, he soon raised his hands signalling he was okay. “Are you okay?”

“Yes, thanks. Just a noodle that went through the wrong channel.” ‘So that’s why it ringed a bell when she told me she came from Kyoto... Naraku’s last victim was her father... And he blamed The Hanyou... I wonder how did he manage to look like me though, for the witness to say it was me.’

“Anyway, I will find which one of them did it and then I will do justice.” She said.

“You say that there was someone who witnessed the whole thing... Who? The press says it was The Hanyou...”

“Yes, I don’t know if you heard of him. He is a business man my father use to do business with. His name is Onigumo Akura. And yes, the press says that because they believe Akura’s fancy words, but I’m not so easily bought.”

“I know him, he is very respected figure here in Tokyo. So... He says he saw The Hanyou.”

“He said it was The Hanyou, but I don’t know... I just have a bad feeling about him. He gives me the creeps and there is something about that man that doesn’t click. On the other hand, why would he lie? But I am almost certain that The Hanyou could’ve never done such thing. And I am not going to discard Naraku so easily.”

Inuyasha was curious now. “Why?” He said as he began eating again.

“Because I have been following tracks of Naraku since-”

“No, not that. Why are you certain or almost certain that The Hanyou could never do such thing?”

“Well, You know about The Hanyou right?”

“Yes, but what everybody knows, why?” He asked trying to sound nonchalant.

“He is not how every body pictures him, I know he isn’t.” The woman said with confidence to then add in a whisper: “He can’t be...”

“And what about Naraku?”

“If there is one thing I know is Naraku... And I am going to make him pay for everything he has done.”

‘What the fuck? Does she know something I don’t?’ “Naraku... I heard about him. He is the other suspect, right?”

“Yes.”

“Why do you say that you’re going to make him pay for what his done? You are so sure that he is the murderer?” Inuyasha asked thinking that was the reason.

“No, I am not. But... Well, if you heard about Naraku then you know that he is an evil person. Everybody in my job knows about the king of crime and obviously being what I am, I don’t like what he does. I fight for justice and that guy is just plain cruel. And if you weight the actions of both suspects Naraku ends up taking the first place... But the witness saw The Hanyou and many of the last crimes point towards The Hanyou so I can’t discard him so fast... But... Why would he suddenly change his attitude and begin committing crimes? It just doesn’t make any since. I don’t know.” She said as if talking to herself while sighing out of frustration and shaking her head.

“What’s the other reason?”

“Huh?” She asked him confused, so deep in thought she was.

“The second reason for your transfer.”

“Oh, well... The second one is...”

“Yes?”

“I want to find The Hanyou.” She blurted out abruptly.

“But... You just said... Why do you want to find The Hanyou?” He said a bit desperately.

“Yes I know what I said, but I want to find him besides from the fact that he is a suspect. You see, it’s all related, you know... Finding The Hanyou using Naraku and in between discover who was my father’s murderer.”

“How?” ‘Her mind works in strange ways... But then again she is a woman, and they aren’t known for her common sense, now are they?’ He thought to himself, only to imagine Miroku’s answering. ‘No they are not, but how beautiful they are...’ He had to hold himself not to snickered out loud.

“Naraku is out for his head... And he is after Naraku, though I am not sure why, I think it’s a personal vendetta. So if I chase Naraku I will find him and vice versa, and if I find them both I can discover my father’s murderer in the process, simple as that.” She said.

‘She couldn’t be more right about the personal vendetta thing.’ He thought all though he was still kind of confuse about her reasons. ‘Still, why would she want to find me, err him, outside from discovering her father’s murderer?’

She must have seen his face because she said:

“You see... I am a bit obsessed with him. I have since I was fifteen.” She said with a blush.

“With Naraku?” He asked confused.

“No! Not Naraku! Eww... The Hanyou!” She yelled at him. She saw him freeze, hand and chopsticks half way to his mouth, eyes widening in shock. “I know what you are going to say. That he is just as bad as Naraku himself, but that’s not what I think, though he is accused to have killed my father and some minor crimes. He is a hero, he saves lives and I... I don’t know, he is just so... You know?” She finished, her gaze lost in some daydream.

‘Fuck it all to hell! She is obsessed with him? Why him, of all the men, people, dogs, whatever, why him, the only person I cannot beat in this because is my other identity!’ He thought with a twinge of jealousy.

“So you are in love with a man that has the features of a dog and goes around dressed in a costume?” He said abruptly. He hadn’t meant for that to come as harsh as it did, but he realized that he had struck a nerve as he saw her tense.

“Excuse me? You have no right to call him that. Besides, what if I am? The man is a hero! He saves the city every night and... And I will find him. I will.” She vowed.

“But, isn’t he a suspect for your father’s murder?” He said. As soon as the words came out of his mouth he regretted it.

Kagome went stiff. “Yes. But I am almost positive it wasn’t him. And when I find him I will ask him.” She said coldly. With that she stood and walked towards the door and opened it, but not before saying: “Thank you for the ramen.” With that said she slammed the door making him wince.

“Well, that went just fucking peachy didn’t it?” He swore loudly. A small yelp coming from Zolt made him look down to caress the dog’s big head. He sighed. “You now... I don’t know why I even felt jealous. I mean, it is me after all. And besides I just met her, why should I care who she likes, right?” He sighed again and looked at the kitchen’s wall clock. 10 o’clock. It was time. With that he left to his room to prepare himself for another night of justice.

*****

“The nerve of him to say such things!” She mumbled as she walked inside her apartment. When she closed the door she collapsed against it sighing. “Great Kagome, this is a wonderful way to start a new friendly relationship with your nice neighbor and everything because a man that you don’t even know and you’ve been obsessed with since you were a teenager...” She sighed.
“I need some air.” She said as she looked at her wrist watch. It read 9:55 pm. With that she grabbed her jacket and went for a walk. ‘Maybe I can go to that park I saw passing by when coming here...’

The streets were peaceful and empty leaving Kagome to her thoughts. ‘It’s so quiet... Well duh, nobody is out on the street on a Sunday night Kagome.’ So lost in her thoughts she reached the park without realizing it. She looked around and saw the swings, walking to them and sitting on one. She was sitting quietly when the back hairs of her neck stood. Her instincts were screaming to her, that there was danger near. She looked at her sides not seeing anything out of normal. ‘If freaky silence is normal...’ She thought grimly. She slowly stood up, her right hand reaching for her gun on her waist, to realize that she didn’t have it with her. “Shit.” She cursed softly. ‘Ok, clam down Higurashi. Get a damn grip, you are all tense up.’ Just as the thought ended someone grabbed her from behind with two dirty hands, one covering her mouth while the other circled her waist.

“You make a fucking sound and I’ll snap your fucking neck, bitch. Nod if you understood.” A voice whispered to her ear. The disgusting smell of alcohol in the man’s breath made her gag.

Kagome was trained for this type of situation, so she nodded to let him think that she was a defenseless woman all the while stiff as an arrow.

“That’s good, bitch. Know your place. We are going to have some fun you and I.” With that, he uncovered her mouth and turned her around to face her. She gasped surprised, eyes wide with shock.

“Y-you... How?” ‘The moving guy! What is he doing? He’s nuts!’

“Bitch. You are going to learn to treat people the right way. No female orders me around and gets off the hook so easily.”

“You crazy fuck! You are insane!” She yelled at him as she knee him on his sensitive parts. The man grunt and bent over, freeing her. Kagome knew she had disadvantage because of the man’s size, but still kicked him on the ribs. Or at least is what she tried. The man manage to grab her ankle just as it came in contact with his ribs, twisting it in his hands.

Kagome yelped in pain, as she felt her poor ankle being twisted cruelly in the giant’s dirty big hands. He pushed against her, making her loose balance and fall hard on the ground, hitting her head in the progress. She saw the stars, both from the impact and her ankle. She tried to kick the man with her sound leg but by that time the man was already above her with all his weight, her hands above her head in a deadly strong grip, making it difficult for Kagome to breathe.

“Bitch!” The giant said as he punched her hard making her head bump against the ground again. ‘Damn, he is strong. And I am already weak from the wounds on my head.’

“Bastard! Get off me!” She yelled as loud as she could, fighting him with all her strength while at the same time trying to get a swift of air to her longs. She was already dizzy for the lack of air and the hit against the floor when she saw the man’s fist as it prepared to come down her face. ‘Shit, if he hit’s me with his fist he will surely leave me unconscious.’

As the fist began to descend she closed her eyes tightly waiting for the impact... That never came. Suddenly the man’s weight was lifted from her, as she took a deep breath. She heard grunts and the sound of fist pounding meat. She tried to sit up on her elbows, managing it poorly, still a bit dizzy by the lack of air and the man’s punch, not to mention the pain in her twisted ankle that was already starting to swell, her sight blurry and foggy.

A shadow covered the moon light in front of her making her raise her eyes to her savior. The silhouette was that of a man, a tall man with long hair wearing a strange attire and... And ears at the top of his head.
Hreatreath caught in her throat.

“It’s you... I found you...” She whispered relieved with a soft smile before everything went black.
