Ch. 3
"Oi! Houshi, we're gonna need your help too," Sanura called. When Miroku had reached them, Sanura explained her plan. "Okay, NOW!" Sango slung her hiraikotsu at the youkai, taking out all the heads, save the injured one. Miroku, then, threw his ofudas on the headless necks of the beast, preventing the heads from growing back. "Now, it's my turn." Sanura jumped up at the youkai and took out its main head. The creature, then, collapsed in defeat.
"Now that we've defeated this thing," Inuyasha started, "ya mind telling us why you didn't want us to destroy the--huh?" The group watched in confusion as Sanura took her katana and sliced down the youkai's middle, and collected the remains of her family's bodies, her parent's body parts had, somehow, fused together inside the youkai, so her mother's body was whole once again, as was her father's. Inuyasha, sickened by the smell of decaying flesh, called to her, "What are you doing?"
Sanura looked down at him, "You really wanna know? Then, follow me." And with that, she collected the bodies of her parents and Mingan, and set off toward her home. The others, not wanting to leave her alone, followed.
Miroku, seeing her struggle to carry the bodies, called after her, "Oi, wait up."
"Here, let me help you with them," he said once he caught up with her.
Sanura looked up into his kind brown eyes. "A-arigatou," she said as he took her father.
"If you don't mind me asking," Miroku started when the others caught up, "who are these people?"
"And why were you so keen on saving their bodies?" Inuyasha butted in.
Sanura glared at Inuyasha, "If you'll give me a minute, I'll explain everything. First of all, my name is Sanura and the man the he," she nodded to Miroku, "is carrying, is my otou-san, she," she looked down at her mother's body, "is my okaa-san, and he," she looked at Mingan's body, "is my son, Mingan. And the reason I wanted to save their bodies is because they are my family, and I'd like to give them a proper burial. But the main reason is, the youkai that attacked us is of a special breed, known as the spirit youkai. When the spirit youkai eats its prey, not only are their bodies trapped inside the beast, but their spirit is as well, so they can't even go to the after-life. They'd be trapped forever inside the beast (A/N: ok, for those of you who watch Yu Yu Hakusho, I did get the idea of the spirit youkai from the spirit beast on the show, ok, back to the fic). The only way once can be freed from that torment, is by killing the youkai, and removing thei victim's body from its elly. Which is why I didn't want you to destroy the youkai's body."
"There's one thing I still don't understand," Inuyasha said, "you're a hanyou, but your parents are ningen. How do you explain that?"
"I get asked that a lot. My birth okaa-san, having been banished because of a mistake her parents made, see, her okaa-san was a neko, but her otou-san was an ookami, and at the time, there had been numerous battles between the two, and my okaa-san wasn't accepted into either society because of her blood. So, my mother grew up in a village not far from here, where she made a deal with the villagers, she'd help protect their village, and in return, they'd give her food, clothing, and a place to sleep. Then, about 20 years ago, she met a young houshi, on his way home, and it wasn't until after he left the village, that my mother realized that she was pregnant. She never heard from him again. After I was born, the villagers helped to raise me, but three years after I was born, a huge youkai attacked the village. Okaa-san, fearing for my safety, ran from the village in order to hide me, but the youkai followed. Okaa-san hid me in a small hole in a tree and tried to fight off the youkai, she succeeded in killing it, but lost her own life in the process.
"Not long after that, a young ningen couple found my, when they found Okaa-san's body nearby, they figured out what had happened, so they took me in. The coule owned a small hospital, they took in many ningen and youkai, they never asked for much, just enough to buy supplies, and the ones who were unable to pay, were asked to help train me. Over the past 17 years, I've been taught sword fighting skills, and was given two katanas, I was taught how to manipulate plants, which I have yet to master, which is why I didn't do it earlier to fight the youkai. I was also trained by mikos and houshis, and was taught how to disguise my scent.
Then, about six years ago, I met a kitsune youkai named Tokala, we fell in love, than after about a year, Mingan," she nodded towards the boy in her arms, "was born. Then, a week ago, he was called away to fight in the Kitsune/Inu battles." Her voice started breaking, "It was after I got back from patrolling around my home that I had heard he was k-killed in that same battle. This morning, I had also brought home an egg that, at the time, I didn't know, contained the spirit youkai. I was out at Tokala's grave when the egg hatched, I ran inside as soon as I heard my okaa-san's scream. I arrived just in time to see her devoured by the youkai. Otou-san forced me to take Mingan and run as far away from there as I could get, right before he, too, was devoured by the youkai. I had been running all morning, and that's when I ran into you five."
One thing I still don't understand," Inuyasha said, "I've never heard of the Kitsune/Inu battle. I didn't even know we were at war with the kitsunes."
"No, I'm certain of it, the sun was just starting to rise, I was getting ready to go on my weekly patrol when we were paid a visit by a messenger from the kitsune lord. I remember, I didn't really trust him, because I was unable to see his face, for he wore a baboon pelt.
