Chapter 3: Is there anything you want to tell me?
That fateful night, Miroku was not the only one who noticed the change in Inuyasha and Sango. Kagome had seen the mark of Sango’s neck just has clearly has to monk had, but her reaction to this new piece of information had been more positive.
Sango had gone after Miroku when he’d left camp. The young miko knew that this conversation would be difficult for both her friends, and so she put a restraining hand on Inuyasha’s shoulder to keep him from following his mate.
- “She needs to do this alone Inuyasha.” She said, looking over at him.
His only reaction was to bow his head in understanding. He kept his eyes lowered to the ground, knowing full well that he would also soon be participating in what Kagome liked to call a “heart to heart”. “Feh! Women and their feelings.” He visibly cringed. It was one thing to be open about his emotions with Sango, she was his mate after all, but he didn’t relish the idea of doing the same with his best friend.
- “So…” Kagome began, trying to ease into the conversation. “Is there anything you want to tell me Inuyasha?” She asked him innocently.
- “No!” He answered immediately
- “Are you sure? Somehow I get the feeling that you’re lying.” She said.
- “Feh…” Typical Inuyasha, she thought has she heard his reply.
- “Well if there’s nothing you want to tell me, you won’t mind if I do the talking.” She was going to get it out of him one way or another.
- “Do whatever the hell you want woman. I don’t care!” He said, making a point not to look at her. ”Maybe if I can’t see her, she won’t see me; and then she’ll drop the damn subject.”
Well, that little trick had never worked for Shippo when he tried to sneak chocolate from Kagome’s bag without her noticing; and it certainly wouldn’t work for Inuyasha. Especially hhe yhe young woman was staring right at him.
- “That’s a very interesting bruise Sango has on her neck…don’t you think?” She questioned.
”Ah, drats. She just had to bring it up didn’t she!”. He didn’t respond. He knew he couldn’t escape this conversation, but he’d be damned if he was going to encourage her by answering. Unfazed by his silence, Kagome continued.
- “It’s weird, I don’t recall seeing it before she left to collect the wood. We’re you attacked? Is that you you we’re both gone so long? Did the demon who attacked you take a bite out of her?” She asked slyly but he still didn’t react.
“Well, we’ll see what you can do about that!” Desperate times called for desperate measures. Looking over at Shippo to make sure he was sleeping, Kagome approach the situation from a new angle.
-“ You know I’ve been doing a lot of studying lately. Kaede has many interesting scrolls on the subject of demons and I thinks it’s important for me to learn more about demon customs if I want to help all of you fight them.” Going in for the kill, she continued.” And I’ve learned enough to recognize a mating mark when I see one.”
At her words, Inuyasha sprang to his feet, unable to contain himself any longer. “Damn, damn, damn! Why couldn’t I have a stupid best friend?”
- “So what if it looks like a mating mark?” he asked, trying to deflect suspicion from himself.
- “So what?” She repeated his words. “So did you give her that mark Inuyasha?” She asked him seriously, all thoughts of teasing him having left her.
- “Uh” He grunted, not wanting to confirm her suspicion but unable to deny that he had taken Sango has his mate.
He had turned his back to her. Inuyasha knew that if he looked at Kagome he wouldn’t be able to conceal the truth from her. And so he was unprepared when she let out a happy squeal and launched herself at him, knocking him to the ground with the exuberance of her hug.
- “I knew it! Oh Inuyasha, I’m so happy for you!” She said.
- “That’s nice…but could you get the hell off of me now?” Trying to preserve his dignity despite his undignified position. “Tackled to the ground by a 100 lbs. girl. This is so embarrassing!”
- “Oh, sure.” She said, quickly getting up. “I didn’t mean to do that”
Brushing off her skirt, she went back to the log she had been sitting on previously and made herself comfortable. She patted the spot next to her, silently asking Inuyasha to join her. Now that the cat was out of the bag, maybe she could get him to supply some of detadetails.
- “Do you want to tell me about it?” She just loved a good romance.
- “No!” But he decided it would be best to answer once he saw her hangdog expression. “ It was…nice.” He said in the hopes of making emends for his harshness.” But that’s all I’m going to say so don’t ask me about it.”
If he weren’t so secure in his own masculinity, he probably would’ve blushed as he remembered the events of that afternoon. He’d been foolish to think that he could keep a secret from his best friend, but he was pleased to note that she’d taken the news better than he had originally expected. Still, he wanted to make certain.
- “Did you really mean what you said before?” He asked her as he settled down next to her.
- “Mean what?” She was determined to make this hard he reflected.
- “Did you mean it when you said you we’re happy for me?” He paused as she only continued to stare at him. “You know, about me and Sango…and the mates thing.”
- “Of course I did!” Did he doubt her sincerity? “ I love you Inuyasha, you’re my best friend. Allant ant his to know your happy; and Sango can make you happy…I figured that out a long time ago” She paused. “Maybe even before you did.”
He didn’t answer her, it seemed to be his approach to everything that evening. Rather, he snaked an arm around her shoulder and drew her in fri friendly half-embrace. But he didn’t have to say anything, she knew that he cared for her and appreciated their friendship has much as she did.
In the months that followed, Kagome had observed the changes that had taken place among the five friends since that day. Sango’s gentle influence had served to mellow out Inuyasha…at least a little. He wasn’t so quick to anger anymore, though he could barely contain his temper anytime they encountered Sesshomaru.
Shippo had never been happier either, especially has the bumps on his head were becoming less frequent. Inuyasha was making considerable efforts to be more conciliatory with regards to the kit. Sango cared deeply for the little fox demon, and Kagome understood that Inuyasha was prepared to ignore Shippo’s teasing manner if it pleased his mate.
Miroku and Sango had also become closer than ever. Kagome could often see the sweet and gentle love that shimmered in the monk’s eyes when his gaze fell upon the demon slayer. And she’d been kept up at night on more than one occasion by the whispered conversations between her two friends.
Other things had also kept her up at night recently, but she blushed just thinking about what those other things could be.

A/N: Okay! I know, there wasn’t any Inu/Sango action in this chapter but I just wanted to wrap up the how will everybody react part> with pretty paper and a little bow. I promised you a good licking and some ass kicking; and I plan to deliver.
A/N 2: I’m in the market for a new name for this fic. The title worked fine when it was just a one-shot but now I realize it really sucks. Your suggestions would be appreciated.
