Chapter 3: The Gifts

The massive room was lit by only one candle mounted upon the wall above her bed. The dim flicker of the flame sent spooky shadows across the walls and ceiling. Leaving her door open, Rin walked over to her vanity to pick up another candle. She climbed on her bed, sat on her knees, and lit the candle from the one above her bed. She then proceeded back to her vanity where she lit five more candles.

After they were all lit, Rin noticed something sitting beside her bed, nearest the window. She looked closer and saw that they were two large bags. Both were tied with some kind of beautiful ribbon. One of the bags had a piece of paper attached to the ribbon that simply said, 'Happy Birthday, Rin.' The handwriting was so perfect, that she concluded that it could have only been her Lord Sesshoumaru. No way could Jaken could have handled anything with such care.

Rin’s slender fingers moved over the ribbon of the first bag. She slowly untied it and opened the bag to discover the most beautiful and exotic fabrics she'd ever seen! For a moment, she couldn't move. She could only stare in awe and slight confusion. 'What is this!?' Slowly coming back to her senses, she began to shift thought the contents to not only find fabrics; but new needles, threads, buttons, thimbles, and such.

‘I can't believe this!!’ she thought. ‘Has Sesshoumaru-sama lost his mind!?’

She then moved to the next bag, making sure to be careful not to wrinkle the precious note. Once again, Rin was taken back by the contents. This bag held at least ten to twelve brand new kimonos and matching sandals. There was also a small bag, which contained a various assortment of sweets, like cakes and hard candies. She made a mental note to keep these well-hidden from Jaken. But it was what was at the bottom of this bag that made her shriek with delight, and tears well in her big brown eyes. Contained in a small, silk pouch, was the most elegant jewelry she'd ever laid eyes on. The necklace was made of pure black diamonds that were held together by small, silver links. In the middle of the necklace were five links going downward, the middle one being the longest, with yet more black diamonds.

The earrings matched perfectly with the necklace. Rin held them up to the candlelight. The dark sparkle that they emitted was breathtaking. Rin looked back in the silk pouch to find one last item, a ring. This ring didn't match with the other fine pieces of jewelry. In fact, it was quite different. The ring was made up of a white-gold band, but the jewel that it contained was what made it special. It was a very, light pink, but so clear that one could see right thought it. It’s shape was quite odd, like a flower petal. Rin slipped the ring on the ring finger of her left hand. It was slightly too big, so she moved it to her middle finger.

"Perfect," she whispered. "It's so beautiful! ALL of these things are so beautiful!” she said, while looking among the many gifts spread out around her on the floor and in her lap.

'Why?’ was the question that kept racing though her mind. Why had her Lord been so gracious? She just didn't understand. Of course, he had always supplied her with everything she'd ever needed, and he did spoil her on occasion, but never ever like this.

Her mind raced a hundred miles a second. What was she to do? She would thank him of course, but then what? Somehow, this didn't seem like his "usual" splurge to spoil her and give her anything she wanted. First of all, she hadn’t been with him. He only bought her nice things when they traveled together. Second, she recognized these fabrics and jewelry! They were from Sujin's shop. Lord Sesshoumaru never went to THAT village. He claimed the smell detested him. He only sent Jaken and herself there to get supplies for the castle and to get her new clothes or fabrics if she needed them. The confusion lay thick in her mind. 'I must go and thank him,' she decided. 'It's the least I can do.'

Sesshoumaru could hear her in the halls and she was heading in his direction as he had predicted, but she wasn't running as he had expected. She hadn't burst though the door either. Instead, he heard the ever so gentle knock of her tiny hand.

Of course, she knew he would be aware of her presence and there was really no need to knock, but she did it anyway, out of respect for her Lord.

"You may enter, Rin. What is it that you need?"

"My Lord, the gifts.... they're so…" Again, she couldn't stop the tears from spilling over.
She immediately felt ashamed. Why was she crying? 'You're not a child anymore, Rin!'

"I'm sorry my Lord. Please forgive me. I thank you, so very much. If there is anything I can do to repay you, please don't hesitate to say so. I would do anything to make it up to you. I just..."

He cut her short. "Rin."

"Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama?"

"I'll see you at dinner shortly."

His face was as expressionless and passive as ever. Rin dropped her gaze to the floor. She had obviously read too much into this. 'Jaken is right. I am just a silly human girl. I don't deserve this life.'

"Very well, my Lord.” She turned to leave.

"Rin."

She stopped dead in her tracks, but didn't turn back.

"Wear one of your new robes. Anyone you like. I want to see how they suit you.

"Yes, of course, Sesshoumaru-sama."

She couldn't mask her excitement, no matter how hard she tried.

Sesshoumaru let out a sigh as soon as he was sure that Rin had returned to her quarters. What had happened to him? He didn't know. Since, about a little over a year ago, he'd been seeing Rin in a different light. Yes, he remembered the day like it was but yesterday......

Well, I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter. It wasn't very eventful I know...but there are some things that I have to explain and get out of the way to set up the rest of the story, so please bear with me...I will be updating very soon. Hopefully sometime this week on one of my days off. Reviews would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!
