Chapter 3: Quiet

The flame flickerd against the darkness as four bodies sat near it being warmed by it's heat. Shippou and Kirara were already fast asleep adn Kagome was getting sleepy herself. But Sango hadn't come back yet and she began to worry.

"Hey, Miroku," she said, breaking the monk out of his meditation, "Sango's been gone for a while now and I'm a little worried. Do you think she's ok?"

"I'm quite sure that Sango is more than ok but I would be more than happy to go check on our dear friend."

"Oh no you don't!" Kagome said just before he began to rise. "I'll go check on her." She got up and disappeared into the woods. As she walked through the trees she called out Sango's name but heard no response. Kagome quickened her steps. She finally made her way to the stream only to find her friend on the ground, unconscious, and naked. "Oh no! Sango, are you ok?" she cried, running to help her. She touched Sango's skin and couldn't believe how incredibly cold she was. She placed her fingers on her neck to feel for a pulse. Kagome let go a sigh of relief when she felt a steady heartbeat. After grabbing some clothes to wrap her in she got to her feet and ran back towards the campsite.

"Miroku, come quick! Something's happened to Sango!" The mention of her name was enough to snap him to his feet and follow Kagome in to the woods. The sight of Sango nearly broke his heart. He just stared at the unmoving body below him. Snapping out of his gaze, he scooped her into his arms and swiftly took her back to the fire. He placed her near it as Kagome grabbed a blanket to cover her with. She made sure she was comforatble then took a step back towards Miroku.

"What do you think happened to her?" she asked.

"I don't know. I just hope that it wasn't anything serious. We won't know anything until she wakes up so it's best that we try to go to sleep ourselves."

The two went back to their previous spots and tried to get some rest. Miroku took one last look at Sango before closing his eyes and gave a sad sigh.

Sango woke up a few hours later at the crack of dawn. She sat up to see that she was back with her friends and covered with Kagome's blanket. Her head pounded as memories of last night flooded her mind. She stood up with the blanket still around her, grabbed her clothes, and headed for a tree to change behind. Each step brought pain between her legs and tears to her eyes. All she could think about while she changed was the "incident". She knew that Inuyasha wasn't himself when it happened but did that make it alright? If she told the others about it she was sure that emotions would rise. Kagome would be angry and heartbroken. Miroku would be the same at a higher degree. She always felt that beyond the leechery and the impending need for an heir, he truely felt something for her. She had feelings for him as well. Deep down, she hoped that he would have been the one to...
And after everyone knew, they would probably break up. The search for Naraku and the jewel shards would be incomplete. None of them could do it alone or without everyone as a whole. She knew she couldn't do it alone and she didn't want to. With the exception of her brother, they were her family and she didn't want lose her family again. Sango's eyes stung with tears as she weighed these thoughts in her mind. She finished dressing and whispered to herself, "I can't tell them." Sango quietly went back to the campsite so not to wake the others.

"Feeling better I see." The sound of Miroku's voice startled her as she looked to see him sitting up and staring at her.

"Yes, I'm feeling much better." she said, trying to force a smile. "You're up early."

"I couldn't really sleep. I was too worried about you." Miroku's words made Sango turn around to keep from facing him. He stood up and made his way towards her. "What happened to you last night Sango?"

"I wasn't feeling too well and I thought a bath might help. I was tired and hungry and my head was killing me. I guess it was more than my body could handle."

"Well, please take it easy. I wouldn't want you fainting on us again." Miroku said. He tried to put a hand on her shoulder but she flinched and avoided it.

"I'm ok now Miroku. You don't need to worry about me anymore." Sango walked away from Miroku and sat down by a tree to wait for the others to awaken. She placed her head in her lap and pretended to rest, glad that he couldn't see her tears.
