Chapter 3: Melding Hearts

Kagome packed her few belongings in her yellow pack and set off toward the forest, heading to the well that led back to her own time.
‘At least I will have some time to think about things… and hopefully get my mind off of Inuyasha,’ thought Kagome to herself absent-mindedly to herself as she journeyed through the woods. Hurrying, Kagome picked up speed and started to run through the underbrush when a nearly invisible tree root barred her path. Caught off balance, Kagome tripped and fell flat on her face. “Ouch!” she yelped aloud, surprised at what had just happened. “Great, well at least Inuyasha wasn’t here to make fun of me.” Sitting up, Kagome noticed a cut on her leg from an offending tree branch. “Jeez, Inuyasha would have been a pain if he knew that a tree almost kicked my ass.”

Back at the hut, Inuyasha sniffed the air and was suddenly struck with panic. ‘That’s Kagome’s blood,’ he thought, fear seizing him. ‘I should have never let her go, I must go and protect her!’ With that conclusion, there was nothing left but a ferocious need to protect his miko residing inside Inuyasha. He speed through the forest with unimaginable speed, seeming to streak like red and white lightning through the emerald green leaves of the forest.

Grumbling, Kagome plucked herself off the ground, dusting herself off and resumed to the well. She entered the clearing and before dropping down the well, she caught the sight of the majestic God tree, and was struck with the memory of the first time she had laid eyes on Inuyasha. She sat down in front of the tree, tears spilling out of her eyes, streaking down her cheeks. She thought of the entranced hanyou looking so beautiful wrapped in the limbs of the ancient tree. ‘He looked so peaceful, just like he was sleeping.’ Smiling, she remembered the soft feel of his ears through her fingers. “Oh, how I wish I could touch his ears again and see his reaction.”

Inuyasha found Kagome in the clearing of the God tree, but saw no apparent danger and heart still pumping adrenaline through his veins, decided to stay in the shadows of the forest. He smelled her salty tears and cringed at her apparent sadness. ‘Why is she so sad,’ he wondered, ‘what has happened to her?’

“Damn him!” Kagome exclaimed, a fierceness in her voice that Inuyasha was unsure of, not for its anger, but the undertones of sadness, and …longing in her heated cry. “Why does he torture me so much?!… I don’t think I can handle it much longer.”

‘What IS she talking about?’ Inuyasha wondered, his ears flattening by the knowledge that some guy was causing her such grief. ‘Who is this fool that she is talking about.’

“Why must Inuyasha play with my heart, and why do I continue to allow myself to be so vulnerable to him?”

‘WhhhAT!’ Inuyasha practically chocked on his surprise. His eyes wide, he could not move his gaze an inch from the miko huddled under the looming tree. ‘She is talking about me,’ he thought, ‘She has feelings for… me?’ The thought made his heart pump blood even faster and his heart almost burst with emotion for Kagome. ‘If I didn’t have a demon’s sense of hearing, I wouldn’t believe my ears.’

“Uhh,” cried Kagome, a fresh wave of utter grief washed over her. “Why Inuyasha, she asked the tree, in a small voice, “Why must I love you so much when you can never love me in return?”

‘D-Did she just say…she loves me?’ Inuyasha was thunderstruck by this and his heart swelled even more with love for his little miko. Inuyasha had heard all that he needed to, and gathering his courage prepared to set everything straight. But something held him back. Kikyo. Didn’t he have to stay loyal to her? Torn, Inuyasha thought about his dilemma. His mind returned to Kagome’s words. “Why must I love you so much…”
‘She loves me, now, in this form, for me. Kikyo never even thought about me unless she was sure I could become human.’ Turning her words over and over in his head, Inuyasha came to the realization that all he felt toward Kikyo was an urge to avenge her by defeating Naraku. Otherwise, he heart belonged to Kagome, the girl who loved Inuyasha who what he was, nothing more, nothing less.

Looking out of the trees again, Inuyasha noticed that Kagome had stopped talking and was now lying fast asleep in the shade of the ancient God tree.
