Song of the Heart
Rin looked in wonder at the silvery hair framing the face she’d seen last on the TV. Her heart quickened in pace as reality settled into her brain.
“Sesshoumaru?” Her voice was barely above a whisper, but he heard her. “Governor?”
Sesshoumaru smiled down at the child in his arms. She couldn’t be much older than five years of age. He nodded at Yasha as he held the door to the limo open. The younger man smiled then shut the door as Sesshoumaru settled inside with the child in his arms. With a yawn, she settled back into slumber.
“So, Nii-sama, shall I head home?” Yasha smiled back through the driver’s window.
“Yes, she needs to be put in a warm bed as soon as we can. Who would cast out a child as young as her anyway?” Sesshoumaru pushed Rin’s hair from her face. “Such an innocent sweet thing. She clearly did not deserve the life she had.”
“You say that of each of the children you see starving on the streets. You’ve grown more compassionate towards humans.” InuYasha didn’t need to look at his brother to see the glare. “And I can still fell your glare.”
“I’ve learned a lot about love. It’s been a long time since I lost her. I vow to keep these children safe in her memory. You know that better than anyone.” Sesshoumaru traced his fingers over Rin’s cheeks. “Somehow.. I think she’s her. Rin’s reincarnation.”
“You’d have to ask my wife that one. You know she’s due next week.” InuYasha couldn’t help thinking how close Kagome’s due date was.
“InuYasha, do you think I’d let you work through her having that baby? I’ll let you have time off for her having the baby.. And even some time to get used to having the baby at home. Since you insist on living at the Shrine.”
“Kagome would know better than anyone if she was Rin’s reincarnation. Though, I should sense it more than anyone. I was closest to her. She grew old with me, even gave me a child.” Sesshoumaru smiled to himself. “I loved her more than I loved myself at that time.”
The sleeping child in Sesshoumaru’s arms stirred. She blinked then looked around. Her eyes were wide.
“Rest easy, my precious. You will be my child.” Sesshoumaru kissed her on the forehead. “InuYasha, I know that I can never undo the past, but I have a story to share with you.. That happened long before I rescued her.”
InuYasha pulled into the driveway leading to the Mansion his brother lived in. He owed his life to Sesshoumaru. After Naraku’s fall, if it hadn’t been for his older brother, everyone would have died. Those closest to all. He pulled in front of the house and stopped the car. He made no move to get out, as his brother’s voice stopped him.
“There was a young boy I watched over. I tried to despise him, I really did. Even as he grew, I tried to hate him with every fiber I had. His vulnerabilities were a mockery of our father. Part of me loved him. Part of me vowed to never allow anyone to kill him. On nights of the new moon, even before his mother’s death, I watched over him. When he was orphaned, I made it my duty to be near. He was sixteen before I figured he could care for himself. Sure, I openly showed hatred. I often tried to kill him. I never could. I vowed on my father’s grave to allow nothing to happen to his youngest son. Don’t you see, InuYasha. I never hated you. I hated your vulnerabilities, but never you. I hated the fact you were half human. But know this, you NEVER were alone on the nights of the new moon. I knew you were weakest then, and I never allowed anything close enough to you to harm you.”
InuYasha stared out the window, absorbing what his brother said. Then a small, green toad like man came running out the doors.
“MY LORD!! MY LORD!! That child has a price on her head!!”
InuYasha snapped out of the fog he was in.
Sesshoumaru nearly dropped Rin as he got out of the car.
“What?” Sesshoumaru’s golden eyes narrowed dangerously. “What do you mean Price?”
“She was targeted by police for stealing food from a Needy Table! They said she stole food from them for months.” Jaken made a meek bow before continuing. “They want her dead.”
“The job of the Needy Table is to feed these children, not to kill them. Senator Kouga should not line his pockets with monies provided to him. His job is to feed and school these poor souls.” Sesshoumaru nearly growled. “I shall have words with him over this.”
“My Lord? This child also was rumored to be aiding an old woman in stealing money from the donation boxes.” Jaken let out a startled squawk as InuYasha kicked him.
“You can’t mean the old woman who opened her home to her. That woman made her monies honestly by opening her home to some of the children. She applied for assistance, and will even be this child’s Nanny.”
Sesshoumaru glared into the night as his brother took the sleeping child from his arms. She was his now, his to love, his to protect.
“My sweet Rin, I vow to protect this and every child on these streets. Guide me, My love.” Sesshoumaru whispered into the night breeze.
The child in InuYasha’s arms woke with a start. Her eyes grew wide and she struggled to get down. InuYasha set her down, her bare feet making a path in the snow.
“Lord Sesshoumaru!”
