You Can’t Help Me
Chapter three: Lovely Head
Date: 11/26/2003
Author: Kittydemon
Disclaimer: Inu Yasha’s not mine and the chapter is named after a song by GoldFrapp.
Warnings: Angst, blood (but it’s not like you never see that in the actual series)- that’s it. I even managed to make this chapter without swearing- lol, hard, considering this is about Inu Yasha.
A/N: I’m sooo sorry for not updating for so long!! Waaah! Sorry!
I would also like to thank all the people who reviewed! I really appreciate each and every one of your kind comments!
Aaand finally, about this chapter…well there are two things I’d like to say about this chappy, one is that it’s general mood is much lighter than that of the other two, probably because I don’t actually feel that gloomy and depressed anymore, and two is that Inu Yasha is a bit of a bastard to Kagome in this chappie, but that’s only because he doesn’t feel normal, so he reacts aggressively to any little thing. Well, that’s pretty much it!
Enjoy!
*~*
“Inu Yasha.” Kagome called up to the trees, intensely looking at the patch of red she could see peaking amongst the masses of leaves.
A cold morning wind blew past her, as the moments of silence dripped on. The patch of bright red course fabric didn’t move. Hugging her sweater closer around her, Kagome briefly thought it strange that Inu Yasha didn’t sense her coming, let alone still sleeping when she called his name.
Maybe he was ignoring her.
“Inu Yasha!” Kagome’s brow crooked in slight anger as she made her voice louder. But the annoyance quickly disappeared once she saw the hanyou move.
“Mm.” The irritation in his voice was clear.
“Inu Yasha wake up. I want to talk to you.”
“Feh.” The hanyou slowly sat up on his branch and then made no further signs of moving again. Kagome took a deep breath. What happened yesterday really upset her. It shouldn’t have done, but it had. She couldn’t sleep last night because of that little strange argument.
“I...-“ she came here to do this, to put it behind them, and to prevent bringing others into this, “I came to apologize for yesterday.” It was a logical thing to do. Inu Yasha sure as hell wasn’t going to apologize, and making a big thing out of this disagreement was pointless. It wouldn’t get them anywhere, it wouldn’t solve anything.
She heard the hanyou ‘tsk’ but say nothing more. Feeling the silence absorb them, she quickly racked her brains for something that would carry across how sincere she was in her apology.
“ I just want to say I’m sorry for being late, I...”
*~*
Inu Yasha glanced at his sleeves that covered up the wounds from yesterday’s splash of...emotion. He sat cross-legged on his favorite branch, frowning down at his arms and at the same time listening to Kagome’s apology.
“ –but you really scared me with that rock... so I think I had a right to be angry, so-so we’re even.” Inu Yasha’s eyes nearly bulged at her insane conclusion. He immediately looked down at her form, forgetting all about his hands for the moment. Before he could give her a piece of his mind, Kagome stomped her foot and quickly added:
“Listen, can we just put this behind us?” Her eyes pleaded him to just give into her.
Inu Yasha stared at her with a bewildered expression on his face, completely speechless. Did-did she really expect it to be this easy?! Before he could think of anything clever to say, Kagome’s voice broke through his train of thoughts.
“Well?” Feeling slightly uncomfortable under his outright stare, and the silence was becoming little less than unbearable for Kagome. “Say something.”
“You’re awful at this-,” The hanyou decided.
“Well, excuse me! You’re not much better at this!!” Kagome cut him off before he could finish what ever else he was going to say. A loud growl emanated from him, but Kagome ignored it and continued on with her fury at the half youkai. “I don’t see you trying to apologize to me! -“
“That’s because ‘I’ don’t have anything to apologize for!”
“Like ‘hell’ you don’t!” Kagome glared at the hanyou finally setting loose of all her emotions and thoughts regarding the matter of their argument yesterday.
“Last time I checked it was ‘you’ who was late!”
“Okay, great! Now we’re back to square one! I already said I was sorry for being late!” Kagome couldn’t help but scream at the annoying hanyou.
“So? That doesn’t mean you’re forgiven!”
“Inu Yasha! Why can’t you just be ‘normal’ for onc-“
“Because I’m not fucking ‘NORMAL’!” Inu Yasha’s eyes flashed with both anger and hurt at her words. She hit a nerve. And it was both the fact that it was ‘her’ and that it had to be ‘that’ nerve. The hanyou’s hair swayed in front of him, still following the momentum of his rapid movement to glare at her.
Before he had time to jump to the ground from his high branch, Kagome’s panicky voice pierced the air. “Wait!” The girl quickly moved away from the tree trunk to get a clearer view of the hanyou up above, “I didn’t mean it like that! I meant-“
Inu Yasha roughly turned his face away from her and hurled himself to the ground, landing on all fours. His eyes not leaving the ground, the hanyou made an attempt to keep himself composed for at least a little bit more, “Kagome,” he grout out slowly,” I ‘really’ don’t want to talk about this right now.” He heard Kagome’s footsteps nearing him with urgency while he spoke with uncharacteristic calmness.
“Let me finish what I was saying!” She stopped a few paces before him, and started to kneel, so that she would be at his level.
“God damn it!” the hanyou aggressively rose to his full height and glared down at the surprised girl, before he could help himself he shouted at her with more venom in his voice than he ever dared aim at her- “Will you just leave?!”
Despite his intimidating demeanor, Kagome hopelessly tried to straighten the situation with desperation crawling into her weak reply-“No! Let’s talk about this like adul-“ Her voice insisted on growing quieter and quieter with each word as her eyes scanned his angry face, and before she could finish YashYasha’s patience finally snapped.
“Fine then! I’ll go!” Turning round the hanyou broke into a sprint and ran further into the forest. His sprint quickly ending as he soared into the air and roughly landed on a branch, snapping it as he took off again.
Kagome quickly gathered herself up and before he could disappear from her sight she irately exclaimed, “Inu Yasha!”
“Inu Yasha! You jerk!”
*~*
Kagome rolled down the hill, taking over Sango and Miroku as the two walked together at a leisurely pace. The sun had started to set and the light around them dimmed in slow degrees. Inu Yasha was far up ahead, wordlessly showing that he was pissed off at something again.
Kagome let a smile stretch across her face as she felt the warm evening breathe against her face. Feeling slightly uneasy about what happened this morning with Inu Yasha, she decided to give the hanyou some room. Maybe he needed some time to think, clear up a few things, or just some time to cool off and come back to his senses.
Taking a deep breath, she focused on the figure in front of her, a small frown forming on her face. Maybe something happened when she was away. Maybe something like another encounter with Naraku, or Sesshomaru? But the other’s didn’t mention anything like it…something was bothering Inu Yasha but what was it?
Her frown deepened as an image of a beautiful shrine miko flashed in her mind’s eye. Was he thinking of her? Kikyo. Could…could she have-
Before she could finish her thought the kitsune in her basket called her name with a worried intonation.
“Kagome?” The girl briefly glanced down at Shippou before returning her gaze to the path she was on.
“What is it?”
“Kagome, did something happen to Inu Yasha?” Kagome’s eyebrow quirked at the question as she gave the child a confused look.
“Why? Why’d you ask?” She watched as Shippou once again turned to face the direction of the hanyou, he stuck his nose into the air and deeply breathed in.
“He smells of blood.”
“What?” Kagome’s eyes bulged at the statement as she stared at the cub with disbelief. Before long her gaze was once again drawn to the hanyou walking in front of them.
“I don’t know why, and recently we haven’t fought any demons…” the child began to murmur hesitantly, as if scared that the hanyou’s monstrous hearing ability would pick up even his soft whispers in the opposing wind-“so I thought I should tell you…” Shippou’s eyes glanced at Kagome as if seeking reassurance.
“T-thanks Shippou.” Kagome’s eyes quickly darted to the cub’s worried face before once again settling down on the path they were currently riding. Despite Inu Yasha’s violent character and seemingly strong dislike of him, Shippou cared about the hanyou. And all she could think of doing right now was calming his worry.
Peddling slightly slower, Kagome let her mind wander. She needed to think right now. Could it be that the stupid jerk was hurt but didn’t want to look ‘weak’? Maybe that’s what made him loose his temper so much? But then again…doesn’t Inu Yasha heal really quickly? If he hasn’t healed by now, maybe it’s something serious but he’s too macho to reveal it... no. Inu Yasha isn’t that stupid. He’d definitely tell her to treat his wound if it was bad, while bitching about whoever caused it. But …what if he didn’t want to show her the wound because he didn’t want to tell her how he came about it? And somehow…maybe it wasn’t because of his macho ness at all. Maybe it was because of Kikyo…
*~*
“How far is it?” Miroku turned to look back at Kagome. The group had halted to a stop to briefly plan what they were going to do this evening. Kagome squinted into the distance looking at something no one else could see.
“Quite far.”
“Will we make it by sunset?” Sango’s voice resonated from the back of the group. Kagome looked at her and shook her head.
“Definitely not.”
“Tsk.” Everyone’s attention was drawn to the irritated hanyou as he swirled around on his spot so that he faced in the direction of the shard. His eyes evidently telling all about his impatience with human slowness.
“I think we should set camp.” Miroku suggested to the group looking around to see if anyone agrees.
“Yeah, that way we could use the hot spring we just passed.” Kagome quickly chirped in with a slightly lighter note.
“I’ll come with you.” Sango quickly said as she turned to Kagome who gave her a warm smile and proceeded with taking out bath things from her bag.
“Sure.”
*~*
The two females waded into the warm steaming water of the hot spring. Kagome glanced around instinctually checking for any signs of danger, while Sango dipped into the water, emerging with a content sigh. But something was on Kagome’s mind which troubled her... and it just happened to be a certain irate hanyou.
“It was a nice day today…” Kagome skimmed her hands over the liquid while watching the exterminator.
“A little boring.” The taiju proceed dunking her hair in the warm water, trying to clean it.
“None-the less,” she paused while patiently waiting for the other girl to come back to the surface again, “Sango?”
“Yes?”
“I gotta talk to you...” concern wavered in her voice as she silently pleaded the other to listed to her more attentively. As if immediately noting that something was wrong, Sango darted a look at the future girl, halting her washing movements.
“What is it?”
“I don’t know... Inu Yasha’s being a real jerk recently.” As if finally understanding what was troubling her, Sango rolled her eyes and suppressed a small smile.
“I wouldn’t say it’s recent.”
“No, I’m serious!” Kagome abruptly crouched in the water, as if to show her annoyance, “he’s been acting strangely, you know-distant, constantly in a bad mood and it’s like every time I try to talk to him, he ends up blowing up on me!” She blew bubbles in the water as her eye brows dove down into a frown.
Sango watched Kagome all the while she was speaking with a more serious expression than a moment ago. “Blowing up?”
Kagome’s suddenly brought a hand up and smacked it hard against the water, creating a splash, “- and he gets mad! Anything can set him off- he’s never been like that before!… Maybe... maybe it’s a demon thing...?” She glanced back at Sango as if seeking an answer from her.
“I-I don’t think so...maybe you should give him time?” She started to play around with her hair again. “I’m sure things will turn out fine.”
Kagome glanced down at her hands, clearly unsatisfied with the passive advice. Desiring not to make any more fuss about it any longer, she lowered herself into the water and breathed over the top, creating ripples.
“You’re right Sango.” Heaving another big sigh she pushed forward and began to paddle in the water, but before she got very far a thought struck her and she quickly made her way back to the exterminator. “Oh!”
“What?” The other girl stilled her movement once more and paid full attention to what Kagome had to say.
“He’s injured!” Kagome rose to her full height in front of Sango, “Shippou told me today that he smelt blood on Inu Yasha,” looking Sango straight in the eye Kagome gravely asked, “Did-did you guys fight a demon when I was away?” Sango’s eyes widened slightly in mild surprise, before softening into a caring and understanding expression.
“No, didn’t I already tell you?”
“Yeah- well...” the sentence drifted off as Kagome immediately blushed and looked back at the water, ashamed for doubting her companion. A hand gently covered her shoulder. Kagome glanced back at her friend.
“Look- he probably jumped off a tree and landed wrong or something, and is to proud to admit it- I don’t think it’s anything serious, otherwise he would’ve told us.” Another smile appeared on Sango’s face, coaxing one to appear on Kagome’s too. “Don’t worry about him. He’s fine. Come on! This is Inu Yasha we’re talking about here!”
“You’re probably right.” The smile on Kagome’s face widened as relief washed over her soul.
