Chapter 3 ~ Learning and Loss
Little communication had gone on since Inuyasha had brought Kagome back to his cave. Kagome had finally given in and eaten, for the small loaf of bread that Kaede had given her had only gone so far. Kagome was on the opposite side of the fire from Inuyasha. Inuyasha looked at Kagome. He wanted to learn to communicate. He wanted to break down the awkwardness that was going on between them right now. *Why do I care so much about this stupid wench?* Inuyasha thought. However, he really didn’t have an answer for that question. Only one way to break the barrier.
“Oi, Kagome?” Kagome looked up at Inuyasha iock.ock. *Did he just call me Kagome? He called me by my name…* she thought. He had Kagome’s full attention. “Teach me how to do what you do with your hands. Kagome looked dumbfounded at Inuyasha. He had really gotten her attention. “How do you say ‘mine’?uyasuyasha asked. Kagome rolled her eyes. *Figures he wants to learn how to sign THAT* she thought. Kagome moved closer to Inuyasha so that he could see her and signed slowly and clearly “Mine”. Inuyasha tried it, but it camt wrt wrong. Kagome took his hand in her hands and did the sign “Mine”. Inuyasha tried it, and got it right. Kagome smiled and nodded her approval.
A few hours later. Inuyasha could sign “My name is Inuyasha” and he could fingerspell. Finger spelling the the most time, but Inuyasha learned successfully and quickly. Kagome could now be understood when she signed to him “My name is Kagome.”
Inuyasha was tried, and he could tell that Kagome was, too. Inuyasha said “Oi, wench, let’s go to bed.” Kagome turned her back to Inuyasha to show her disapproval. “You will sleep with me in my bed or you will not sleep at all. Is that understood?” Kagome didn’t respond. Inuyasha was now really angry. “Koi, or I’ll make you come!” Kagome, back still turned to Inuyasha, shook her head. “Shitsukoi.” he said angrily. He put his arm around her tiny frame, on her ribcage, a comfortable distance under her breasts. Kagome squirmed, kicked, and scratched, but Inuyasha didn’t waiver until her got to the makeshift bed. He pulled Kagome under with him and covered them with his free hand. Kagome did the only thing that she could think of….she turned towards Inuyasha, and she ght ght her knee up, and kneed Inuyasha in the groin. Inuyasha yelped in pain and curled up, and Kagome took that chance to bolt for it. Inuyasha was by her side faster than the human eye could see, and he grabbed her and dragged her back to the bed. He covered them once he had Kagome down next to him, and he pulled her tightly next to him. “Oi, none of that. You’re mine!” Kagourneurned away from him in his arms, and despite everything, she was comfortable, and soon fell asleep.
Kagome turned in her sleep towards Inuyasha and she cuddled into his chest. *I wouldn’t mind falling asleep to this every night* Inuyasha thought before he fell asleep.
December came, and with it the snow. They had already gotten at least 4 or 5 inches of snow. Kaede had brought a thick kimono for Kagome to wear, and Kagome had begged Inuyasha to go outside. Inuyasha had learned a lot, in fact. He Had learned to understand first the basic needs when Kagome asked for them: Tired, hungry, want, thirsty, cold, hot. Then the vocabulary grew. Inuyasha could now fairly well understand Kagome. Inuyasha had agreed to let Kagome go outside, as long as he went with her. Kagome agreed. Inuyasha sat watching Kagome as she walked in the snow. She seemed really happy, and that was all that Inuyasha really wanted. Kagome threw a snowball straight at Inuyasha’s face, and that started a full-out snowball war. Yes, Inuyasha was enjoying Kagome’s company.
Meanwhile, Kagome’s mother was panicking over Kagome’s loss. No one had seen her daughter. The Daimyo (The ruler of the region) had been informed, and he sent his guards out to search for the girl. One day, in late December, a man came in. He was tall, thin, and had long, black hair tied behind him in a ponytail. “What do you want?” the daimyo asked. “I want my daughter.” the man replied in a threatening voice. “Who is your daughter?” “My daughter is the one who is lost, the one you search for who cannot speak. The one called Kagome.” he replied. “I heard that you left the girl’s mother when the girl was but a child.” “I did. I was ashamed that my daughter couldn’t speak. Now I see that she is unfit to care for my daughter. Honestly, let the girl wander! She would be better off in my care! She would never be lost again, I assure you. She would be well cared for.” “Your name?” The Daimyo asked. “Naraku.” The man replied. “Very well. The girl will live with you, Naraku, after she is found.” “I will send my troops. They will find her.” “Granted.”
“Watch out! Ice!” Kagome signed frantically to Inuyasha. They were outside again, and it was now early January. Inuyasha was dangerously close to a very large patch of ice, but Inuyasha was not listening to Kagome. “There’s no ice there, wench!” Inuyasha argued to Kagome, who watched Inuyasha slip and fall on the ice. Kagome would have laughed if she had the voice. “I warn you!” Kagome signed gleefully. “Oh, shut up.” Inuyasha grumbled, playfully throwing a snowball at Kagome, which missed. Kagome was making a snowball to throw at Inuyasha when she was grabbed from behind and her arms were tied behind her back before she could sign anything. Inuyasha was blocked from Kagome by hundreds of soldiers. Kagome squirmed and kicked while the solider dragged her to his horse and mounted and took off. Kagome had a bad feeling about this. Inuyasha beat the soldiers, and some retreated at a call from their commander, who had Kagome, but it was too late. A large dark portal appeared, and the soldiers disappeared through itnuyanuyasha tried to get through, but it didn’t work. Kagome was gone. HIS Kagome was gone.
