Chapter Seventeen, Part I - The Summons
And so their discovery of each other continued. Of course, they still fought like the proverbial cat and dog and still made up like there's no tomorrow.
They were having their mid-day meal in the form of a picnic under the shade of a weeping willow near the lagoon when they saw Myouga trotting towards them. It was a ridiculously humorous sight, what with Myouga trying to maintain his dignity while running. He was out of breath by the time he reached the duke and duchess.
"Pardon, Your Graces,"
Myouga wheezed as he clutched at the tree's trunk, deciding to abandon all sense of self-respect in order to catch his breath.
"What has gotten into you, Myouga? Here, have a drink,"
Myouga thanked the duchess profusely as he proceeded to drain the proffered cup's contents. When he was sure he could speak without disgracing his self even further, he cleared his throat and held out an envelope to the duke with a flourish.
"The king's missive has just arrived, Your Grace. The messenger is awaiting your response,"
Inuyasha wordlessly accepted the letter, his eyes meeting his wife's questioning ones briefly before he looked down at the envelope with the king's seal affixed in it. Inuyasha tore open the letter and scanned its' contents in a glance before putting it in his pocket. He murmured an apology to his wife and ordered Myouga to escort her back to the castle. He never even looked back as he made his way to the waiting messenger.
Kagome didn't know why, but she felt her husband has withdawn from her in that moment. As though sensing her anxiety, Myouga helped her up to her feet and tucked her hand in the crook of his arm. He patted her hand in comfort before they too walked towards the direction of the castle.
"Do not fret so, Your Grace. I am sure that everything will be alright,"
Kagome said nothing, but she fervently hoped the dear, old man was right.

'The Queen and I wish the pleasure of both you and your wife's presence...'
Inuyasha was still thinking of the king's message as he walked. He knew this day would come. He knew the king could've demanded their presence in court much earlier, but also knew that the king respected their newly-wedded status and refrained from doing so.
But it was just delaying the inevitable.
The moment he and Kagome went back to court, they would become a spectacle. He normally didn't give a damn of what his peers thought of him, but there was now Kagome to think of. Their marriage became a source of so much scandal and speculation already, and the gossip-mongers would definitely be sniffing out for more, he was sure of that. There was also the fact that they would probably be meeting the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk while in court.
'Kikyou...'
Thinking of her made Inuyasha feel a twinge of guilt for her plight. He was content[ even happy[ in his marriage, but he couldn't speak for her. He had no means of knowing how her marriage benifited her as the king expressly commanded him to stay the hell away from Kikyou and Onigumo. If ever they met in court, that would be the first time he would see her after the 'incident'.
Inuyasha was left preoccupied by his beautiful wife, and didn't spare many thoughts of Kikyou. He did so now.
He wondered if she was alright, if she was happy in her marriage. He wondered if Onigumo treated her well, but knowing how infatuated the man was with Kikyou, he must be showering her with lavish gifts and affection. Inuyasha wondered if that was enough for Kikyou.
He told himself that would be enough for him. Once he knew she was doing well with her husband, he would stop worrying about her and focus on his own marriage. He would finally be free of his guilt.
But if she wasn't...
Inuyasha hated to think of that, but he had to. He owed her more than that. He would never turn his back on the woman that he once loved to distraction. He knew Kagome would be hurt, but he had his honor to live by. He would never go back on his word.
And if Kikyou happened to need his assistance, then he would go to her side.
Consequences be damned.
