The Better Man

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Kuwabara watched as both the wolf and Hiei trailed behind Kagome. Everyone had seen the two bickering about who would be the one to protect her. He'd thought about offering to do it but they had spoken before he could. So he'd sat back and watched them fight over her like she was a bone. How could he compete with those two?

Kouga seemed very possessive of her as well, would he be that way if Kagome hadn't been his before? He'd hoped she would come to speak to him but she'd went out of her way to avoid him. She must regret what had happened between them. Not that he could blame her, she could do a lot better than himself. Didn't look like Kurama was an option for her anyone, he seemed taken with Rin.

Now that he thought about it, Kurama had looked at the other girl often when he'd come to visit. Whenever he wasn't flirting with Kagome or talking to one of them he'd been watching the girl. It had almost been like he was studying her. He'd never given it much thought then, since he'd been worried about the fox trying to seduce Kagome. Now that he'd claimed the girl he was letting his interest show more.

That still left Kagome with other options though. Kouga was trying to get her back pretty hard, plus Hiei was following her around. He wasn't sure why the shrimp was doing it but it didn't mean Kagome wouldn't take notice of the man. His chest ached as he watched her stop to speak to Keiko. Why was she avoiding him?

Rin walked out the cave to look around, she didn't see Kurama yet. A sigh of relief escaped her, she needed some time alone to think. Deciding to sneak off she ran down the mountain, luckily the wolves kept their distance from her. She had to remember to thank Hiei later for that.

For the last week Kurama had been her constant shadow following her everywhere. She found that she liked his company and she liked him. He listened when she talked, never interrupting her. For a few days she'd gotten her hopes up because of all the time he seemed to be spending with her. He hadn't tried to touch her at night again. Actually, even though he was spending time with her, he never touched her. There was a few times when he did but every time had been accidental.

Her eyes had begun to seek him out whenever he wasn't near her. She found herself listening for the sound of his voice. The pain she felt when she saw him speaking to Kagome had intensified greatly. While he was always polite and courteous towards her when they spoke; he never laughed with her. He always seemed stressed for some reason. Early this morning she found out why he appeared that way and her hopes had been shattered.

She'd asked him if they could go for a walk and he had agreed. He seemed distant and very tense for some reason. She knew he knew a lot about plants so she'd begun asking questions trying to draw out his attention, hoping to strike a conversation. When he gave only short direct answers she changed the subject.

"Why is Kouga and Hiei following Kagome around all the time?" She asked him curious as to the answer.

"Kanna attacked both of you, they are there for her protection."

Her heart twitched but she asked anyways. "Is that why you are following me around, for protection?"

"Yes, it is my duty." Was his curt reply.

She didn't say anything, her eyes stung. It made sense, why else would he spend so much time with her? She had been a fool to believe it had been for any other reason. No wonder he had looked tense and uneasy around her. His duty and responsibility as her mate demanded that he protect her. So until the threat of Kanna was gone he was being forced to be in her company. Having claimed a headache, she had him walk back to the cave with her.

Now he was no where in sight so she made her way down for some time alone. Tears began to fall the more she thought about it. Her vision blurred as she ran, she slammed into something hard.

"Hey, becareful before you fall off another cliff." Yusuke's voice broke through her thoughts.

"Sorry." She wiped the tears off her cheek, not wanting him to see.

"Why are you crying?" He saw her red eyes and the moisture on her cheeks. "Is something wrong?"

"I'm okay." She wasn't about to tell him what was wrong. Even if he was one of her closest friends now. Her problem was too humiliating to admit to anyone else. She'd let herself begin to have feelings for her mate and he still didn't want her. A tear slid down her cheek, his hand came up to catch it.

Yusuke wiped the tear away, looking into her eyes. Something was bothering her greatly, she hadn't been acting right lately. He wanted to help her if he could, it was the least he could do. It had been her talk with Keiko that had allowed them to work out their problem.

"I suggest you remove your hand."

Rin stiffened when she heard the anger in his voice. 'He's probably mad because I left without his permission.' She sighed when Yusuke pulled back from her and walked away. Her head bent as she looked at the ground not sure what to say. She could apologize because in a way she had disobeyed her mate.

He could sense the guilt radiating off her and knew he was correct. She had lied to him about having a headache simply to get rid of him so she could try and be alone with Yusuke. Anger filled him knowing that she still wanted the other man.

Rin gasped when he spun her around and threw her over his shouler. Embarrassment filled her as he carried her back up the mountain. She knew she deserved it, he'd told her he didn't want her going anywhere without him. Yet she'd gone against his wishes and done so.

Panic filled her when he deposited her down. She stood in front of him, his eyes were filled with rage. His hands went for her shorts snapping the button, yanking them down roughly along with her panties. He spun her around facing away from him, he forced her on her knees. She cringed when his hand wrapped around her neck forcing her to bed over. He was going to take her like a dog.

She remembered coming upon two dogs mating once and she asked Jaken about it. He had informed her that it was a way for the male to dominate the female forcing her to submit. She lowered her head and closed her eyes. His hands forced her legs open and his fingers found her small nerve. She moaned when he began to stroke it getting a reaction from her body.

His body told him to take her, remind her who she belonged to. His mind told him to get up and walk away, it wasn't safe to take her. He could smell that she was fertile, he didn't want to risk getting her pregnant with a threat in the air. He'd been forcing himself to stay away from her the last two days because he'd sensed it. Before that he'd been waiting for her bruising to heal. Now his body was aching with it's need for her.

She felt his tip at her entrance, he entered her hard and fast. Her walls gripped him as he pulled out, he slid back in slowly. The urge for her to move became strong as he rocked against her. The moment she moved his nails dug into her hips.

"Don't move." He didn't mean for it to come out so harsh. He was fighting to keep control, if she hadn't stopped he would have poured himself inside her. Once he regained some control he began moving again. He could hear her whimpers of pleasure, it made his blood rush.

Rin felt the tension building inside her as he drove into her. The fact that he was doing it to show dominance and that he owned her didn't matter. Her body was enjoying the pleasure he was handing out. She screamed his name as her orgasm hit her. His hand jerked her shirt up suddenly off her back. Tears stung her eyes as she felt him pull out then his hot seed land on her back.

He got up and quickly pulled on his clothing, there was nothing here to wash her off with. "Stay here."

She collapsed as soon as he left staring at the wall. The tears refused to come for some reason, even as she felt the hurt fill her. He had just degraded her in the worst way, she was his mate and yet he had pulled out of her.

It took him longer than he thought it would to find something, then Hiei had confronted him. Seemed they would be leaving in the morning to head to the castle, needing to travel almost two days to get there. He walked back in the cave almost thirty minutes later to find her sleeping. After cleaning her up he finished taking off the shorts but pulled the panties up to cover her. Darkness would be falling soon, he layed down beside her.

She was facing him, his thumb found the tear resting in the corner of her eye. Why had she cried? Was it because of Yusuke? The thought made him angry, she belonged to him. He hadn't hurt her during the sex so what other reason was there? His hand left her to find it's way to his side.
