Chapter Twenty-Six
Michiko stood looking out her new home. Upon leaving the mountain, they had returned to the Western Lands. Her and her mother started a new life in this castle with their mates. She was very happy here with her man. At times she felt like choking him when they discussed the child they were about to have. Over four months had passed since that day on the mountain. From what Myouga had told them Kouga had returned to his mountain. His tribe took the news of Kimi's death hard. Seems they had been hoping Kouga would return with the girl as his mate. They had promised the flea to look after their leader. At first, she had believed that her sister was out there somewhere alive but as each day passed a little of her hope disappeared. She made her way outside to join her mother.
Kagome was standing outside speaking to Jaken as the toad complained. Inuyasha had been abusing the poor toad once more.
"I'll talk to him Jaken. Hello dear," she smiled as her daughter joined her. "You are looking well this morning."
"Thanks, though I feel slightly ill again. I begining to dread being pregnant. How did you go through it without wanting to kill dad?"
"My pregnancy wasn't too bad really. You and Kimi," tears formed in her eyes.
"Mom, I'm sorry." She grabbed her hand. Michiko knew that bringing up her sister still caused her mom pain.
Sesshomaru walked up to join her. "What are you doing out of bed woman?"
"Excuse me, I felt like taking a walk. And I'm pregnant I'm not dead. Back off already," she felt his hand land upon her shoulder. It had taken her almost two months to get him to open up. At night he was very attentive but during the day he had been distant from her. Afraid to show her any emotion besides indifference. She had been about to tell him where to shove it. Then she'd gotten pregnant and everything had changed. He pampered her daring anyone to object. Kagome had been thrilled to find out she was going to become a grandmother. Upon hearing the news Inuyasha started making hints towards her about having their own. Inuyasha had brought up the fact to Sesshomaru's that his children would be born half breeds. All the demon lord had said was, "They our this Sesshomaru's they will be as strong as any other demon."
Sesshomaru had accepted the fact that he loved a human female and that their children would be half breeds. He would teach them as they grew. He looked down at his mate's smiling face. Any children she bore wouldn't be weak if they took after their mother. He brushed his lips against the top of her head, "Come you need to eat something. This Sesshomaru will not have you starving his child."
"Mom help me, he's going to make me fat."
"Nonsense, this Sesshomaru will give you some exercise later." She felt herself blush all the way to her roots. How could he say something like that in front of her mother.
Ginta and Hakaku walked inside the cave. Gercha had prepared some food for their leader and asked them to see that he ate. Months had passed since he'd returned alone. No one knew what had occured he never spoke. Wasn't until days later when the flea Myouga had passed on the news of Lady Kimi's death. They had understood why their leader was so depressed. His injuries took several weeks to heal. Everyone pitched in giving him the time he needed. Instead of getting better he was getting worse. He sat in there with the girl's wolf talking to the beast. Winter had come and gone leaving a cold emptiness behind. Spring would soon be here. The snow had begun to melt already along the mountain's base.
"Kouga we've brought you something to eat." Ginta walked in and spotted him leaning against the wall. He was on his furs staring off in the distance looking right through his comrades. "Kouga."
His head snapped up, "What the hell do you want?"
"We've brought you something to eat. My sister prepared it for you, we thought you might want something." Ginta looked at the hagard face. Kouga had lost weight and had dark circles under his eyes. He flinched at the sight of his friend.
"I don't want anything," he reached his hand to stroke her wolf. The only thing he had left of her. The wolf brought his head up but not to look at him. He was looking out beyond the cave. "Get out of here, NOW."
They left the food at his feet and rushed out. "What the hell are we going to do. I miss her too but Kouga's slowly killing himself." Ginta paused to catch his breath.
Inside Socks got to his feet and began to wag his tail. He barked and leapt forward. Kouga remained still shoo-ing the animal away. After several attempts to get the demon off his ass but with no success he ran outside into Ginta and Hakaku.
Hakaku was about to make a suggestion when the beast stopped at his feet. "What do you want?" He answered by grabbing his boot and pulling. Socks ran a few feet away and barked. "I think he wants us to follow him."
"Yeah, think we should?" Ginta saw his comrade nod and he took off after the wolf.
Kimi sat upon her horse stretching. Her back was already aching today and they'd only been riding for several hours. She'd woken up several months ago staring into a face she'd mistaken for her mother's. At first glance she'd thought her mother and the others had found her. When the lady didn't reply she took a closer look. True the lady looked almost like her mother but a little older. "Where am I?"
"I found you a few days ago, at first I'd thought you were dead. You are lucky." Kikyo had been out collecting firewood for her family when she'd spotted the girl along the river bank half drowned. After bringing the girl in and seeing to her injuries she'd seen that the girl closely resembled herself. Her husband and son had helped her tend to the girl as she fought of the cough that threatened her life and the life of her child. Kikyo had wandered around for years after that day when she realised that Inuyasha was lost to her. Deep down she still felt some love for the hanyou but he was meant to be with the girl, Kagome. It took her years to accept that fact and to be able to move on with her life. She came upon a village not long after. There she had met her husband and began to live the life she had always wanted. She finally had a place to belong. Several days after finding the girl her fever had broken.
When she told the girl her name, she saw something flash through her eyes. "You're Kikyo?"
"Yes, may ask how you know of me?"
"My mother's name is Kagome." At Kikyo's nodded she explained how they had came back and that Inuyasha had finally taken her mother as his mate. She also told her how she came to fall of the cliff. "I have to head back. They must believe the worst has happened."
"That was some tale and I can understand your need to rush back to them. I must advise against it though. You are just now starting to recover from your illness and your arm needs time to heal. Winter has already set in. To go now would be foolish, you are welcome to stay here till the weather warms up. You need to think of your child. When spring comes I will escort you to the Western Lands where we will be sure to find Inuyasha or his brother." Kikyo handed her something to eat.
"You would do that for me?"
"Yes, your mother made it possible for me to have a life. It's the least I can do." And so for the last four months Kimi had stayed with Kikyo and her family. She grew to like the woman that had once been her mother's rival in love. She spent the days playing with her son and learning to control her own powers. Kikyo turned out to be a wonderful teacher. The days flew by but not a day went by without her thinking of Kouga. Did he think she was dead? Had he moved on with his life? Would he want to see her again?
Kikyo had also showed her how to use a bow, she insisted that it was best not to get close to your opponent. So every day when the weather was at its warmest and it wasn't snowing she went out and practiced. A sort of friendship had formed between the two women. Kimi felt her baby grow as each day passed. Kikyo had reassured her that hanyou pregnancies only lasted seven months not the usual nine for a regular human child. The girl almost sighed in relief for a minute she'd been worried. She was a little over four months and she looked like she was atleast six. There was no hiding the fact that she was pregnant. Not even a girdle from Frederick's could have hid it. At the first sign of spring Kikyo had woken her to inform her that it was time to leave. So two weeks later she found herself sitting on a horse far from the home she'd spent the last four months of her life towards her future.
A sharp kick in the ribs brought her back to the present. "Ouch, you little shit. I need those." Kikyo laughed at the girl's discomfort.
"Is the child restless?" She had become rather fond of the strange girl. "Just be happy he hasn't found your bladder yet."
"Don't tell me that. I gotta piss all the time as it is now." She kicked her horse in the side ready to move on. They went another mile before a wolf stopped in front of them followed by two wolf demons.
Ginta had followed the stupid wolf for over two hours and he seemed to be sending them on a wild goose chase. He was about to tell Hakaku he was heading back when the wolf stopped and began to bark. Coming up the road were two women on horse back. "Great humans." He was about to scold the wolf when he heard it.
"Socks," Kimi instantly recognized her pet and the two wolf demons behind him. "It's ok, I know them." She slid off her horse and walked towards her friends.
Ginta's heart stopped when he heard her voice. "Lady Kimi, is that really you?"
She dropped to her knees and wrapped her arms around her wolf. Who was covering her face with slober but she couldn't find it in herself to mind. "I've missed you so much boy. How have you been?" She heard the question and looked up at Ginta. "Of course its me don't be stupid."
He rushed over pulling her to her feet giving her a bear hug. "We were told that you were dead. Its so good to see you alive and well." He was about to mention Kouga when he felt something kick him in the stomach. "And very pregnant." He stood back to examine her. "Kouga's?"
"What kind of question is that, of course its his. What kind of girl do you take me for?" She glared at him and Hakaku chimed in.
"My lady, sorry its just Kouga made no mention of a child." He took his turn hugging the girl. "Are you going to return with us? Kouga will be wanting to see you I'm sure."
"Of course she's coming back with us. Maybe then he'll stop sulking and get off his ass."
Kikyo watched as she greeted them. She dismounted and walked over to the girl. "Go with them, I shall return home. I wish you well, my friend."
"Thanks for everything. If you ever need anything," Kimi hugged the woman. She watched Kikyo walk off leaving her wearing borrowed Miko clothes and her bow. Kimi almost wished she had some of her clothes. Every day that went past she hated the clothes her mother had also hated more and more. Hakaku chose that moment to comment on her attire.
"Wow, Lady Kimi you look just like a real priestess in those things. Kouga might not even recognise you." He recieved a kick in the shin for the comment.
"Shut up, no one asked you. Don't piss me off I'm tired and I have a baby playing lets use momma's bladder as a trampolene." She handed Ginta her bow demanding a few minutes of privacy.
