Chapter 16, Part IV - Reprieve
That was all the warning Kagome got before Inuyasha's palm met her buttocks with a crack. He did it again and again, the shock of it numbing Kagome first before it gave way to the insistent pain it caused her. But the sting was nothing compared to the blow to her pride and the humiliation she felt at that moment.
She couldn't believe her husband was actually spanking her!
But she wouldn't give him the satisfaction of hearing her beg or cry. She'd die first.
Kagome bit her lip until she drew blood to keep herself from crying out. Tears were falling freely from her eyes but she made no sound up until Inuyasha stopped spanking her abused posterior. Kagome angrily closed her eyes, refusing to look up at him as he turned her over to face him.
"Kagome, are you all right? Christ, did I hit you too hard?"
She stubbornly kept her eyes shut, deliberately defying him.
"Damn it, look at me Kagome!"
Inuyasha shook her until Kagome spitefully opened her eyes to glare at him, tears still swimming in the azure orbs. He gently wiped a teardrop with his fingertip, remorse there in his golden gaze.
"I'm sorry, love. I didn't mean to do that. It's just that I got really worried when I knew you rode bare-back and I["
Inuyasha took a deep breath and suddenly pulled her into his arms, embracing her tight that she felt she wouldn't be able to drag air into her lungs. His next words had the power to melt her heart and made her toes curl in her shoes.
"God, I was so scared, Kagome. I kept thinking I won't get to you in time and I'll find you with a broken neck... and I overreacted. I can't help it[ I want to know that you're always safe,"
He pulled away, leaving a couple of inches between them so he could look her in the eye.
"Promise me you won't take chances, wife. Promise me you won't scare the hell out of me ever again,"
All Kagome could manage to do was nod in her amazement. He cared for her, he really did. And here she was thinking loving him was a hopeless cause. Perhaps she was wrong.
He was still stroking her hair when he asked her how she learned to ride like that. She told him of her 'unusual' family; particularly her cousin who was an Indian princess. Then she asked him where he learned to ride bare-back. Inuyasha shrugged indifferently and told her about his training with the 'Highlanders'. Kagome told him she couldn't wait until she met them, making her husband laugh at the thought. He told her they didn't like the English.
She saucily reminded him that she wasn't English at all.

After that incident, she only got to ride bare-back when her husband was with her to make sure she didn't injure herself. That was one promise she intended to keep.
Kagome felt like she was obssessing over him, wanting to know all his secrets. He never told her anything unless she asked. And getting him to talk about his family was as difficult as extracting a bad tooth. He never gave her the particulars.
Once, she asked him as to how he acquired the castle. He only told her it was a gift before promptly changing the subject. Kagome had to be resourceful (and quite devious) and went instead to Kaede for all of her questions. The housekeeper was only too happy to accomodate her.
She found out her husband's father was a good friend to King Sesshomaru's father, the late King Inutaisho. When the latter went on an expedition, the then Viscount of Bradwood joined him faithfully. They happened upon the kingdom where Inuyasha's mother, Izayoi, was a princess. She fell in love with the viscount and decided to forsake her country in order to be with him. They took her back to England where the viscount took her for his wife. The castle and the dukedom was a personal gift from the king when the princess and the viscount got married. Everyone thought it was kind and thoughtful of the king to elevate his friend's status of viscount to duke (so as not to be outshined so much by the princess's title) and give him a castle to boot (as the duke's new wife was probably used to living in a castle).
