~*~Chapter 27— Goodbyes~*~

Dawn spread over the land, bathing everything in its radiance. The sun is pleasantly warm, filtering through the deep forest. The birds are chirping and everything is celebrating life… But it was a morose hanyou that awakened…

Inuyasha opened his eyes a fraction, torn between slumber and consciousness. He immediately opened them wide as his gaze fell on the cursed well that would shortly bring his mate back to him.

“Damn everyone! Double damn this pathetic situation I’m in! And triple damn Kagome for leaving me like this!” Inuyasha growled curses at no one in particular, glaring at the well all the while.

“Stop that, Inuyasha. You really don’t have any manners, do you? Early in the morning, and you’re cursing already,” Sesshomaru reproved with a shake of his head as he floated down to land in front of Inuyasha.

“Screw you,” Inuyasha grumbled beneath his breath. Sesshomaru frowned.

“You forget that I can hear you, hanyou. Be careful of what you say, or else,” Sesshomaru threatened, imitating Inuyasha’s warning the night before.

“Come on, let’s get some food to eat and do some more hunting. You aren’t going anywhere near that well, do you understand?” Sesshomaru said in a hell of a menacing voice, waiting before the hanyou nodded sullenly and removed the ofuda.

Inuyasha quickly jumped up and went straight to the well, intending to fall down before Sesshomaru could hold him back. But just as he was succumbing to gravity, he’s gripped in the throat once more and slammed back to the tree again, with the ofuda back on. He can’t move.

“You never learn do you, Inuyasha? You aren’t going to go past me, so I suggest you do as I say. No use in draining all your strength from this exercise,” Sesshomaru said as he dragged his half-brother behind him back to the village…

“Kagome? Dear, are you awake already?” Mrs. Higurashi knocked outside Kagome’s door.

Kagome sat up hazily, her eyes finding the small clock at her bedside table. It says 8:00. Gods, but she just wanted to go back to sleep, Kagome thought as she snuggled back into her comforter.

“Kagome?” The knocks are now more brisk and her mother’s voice rose a little.

Kagome sat up again with a sigh, resigned to have a busy morning.

“Hai, Mama. I’ll just use the bathroom in a minute and I’ll be right down,” Kagome called out to her mom.

“Good. I’m whipping up breakfast downstairs okay? Get down when you’re dressed already,” And her mother’s footsteps left her door.

She quickly made her bed before grabbing her towel and her clothes to the bath. She brushed her teeth and washed her face before making for the shower. After a few minutes, she’s towel-drying her hair and is fully dressed. After combing her hair and leaving it in soft waves down her shoulders, she descended the stairs…

Inuyasha had several bumps on parts of his body, probably due to the rough road he’s been dragged upon. The sight made the taijiya and the houshi laugh, but the kitsune roared hard as he saw the swelling on Inuyasha, reminding him of the painful swells he had his self because of the hanyou.

“Serves you right! Kagome said you aren’t going after her, and you disobeyed him. So you deserve it,” Shippou said with a smirk of his own and crossed his hands across his chest, giving an unintentional imitation of Inuyasha.

“Keh! Shut up, brat! I was trying to return her here to us, and you talk to me like that! Keh!” Inuyasha scowled at the little fox, swearing to the Gods he’ll bonk him on the head after he can move…

“Hey, Inuyasha. Don’t take it out on Shippou, all right? And if you’re really good and do as Sesshomaru says, I’ll fix you one of the ramens Kagome-chan left for you. What do you say?”

The hanyou is already salivating at the thought of the delicious noodles from his mate’s time. He nodded his head eagerly as he waited for Sango to carry out her promise. The monk sat closer to him to talk.

“Oi, Miroku! Get this thing off me already. I promised that I’m not going near the well again,”

“Yeah right, as if you can fool me. I just wanted to ask about the lead we had about Naraku. Seems he’s getting closer and closer to us than expected. Are we gonna check on that?”

“No, WE aren’t going to check on it. The hanyou and I will,” Sesshomaru interjected with his usual authoritativeness.

“Don’t get too cocky, Fluffy! I have plans of my own,” Inuyasha said heatedly.

“Of going down that well? You’re not going to make it, so plan’s changed. You and I are going to check up on it and that’s final. Is that food ready now?” Sesshomaru said dismissively.

Before they could come to blows, Miroku removed the warding from Inuyasha just as Sango placed the ramen in front of him. He happily slurped the noodles and forgot about the discussion.

Sesshomaru’s eyeing the strange food before him suspiciously. He watched as Rin and Jaken gobbled it all up before holding up for more.

“What is this food called, taijiya?”

“Ramen,” Sango answered shortly. Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow, irritating the demon-huntress once again.

“It’s from Kagome-sama’s time, Sesshomaru-sama. And quite tasty, if I may say so,” Miroku averted the demon’s attention as he supplied the answers to the unsaid question.

Sesshomaru is finally convinced enough to allow himself a taste of the “ramen”. And felt like he tasted heaven as he did so.

“Looks like you’re a lot more alike than you want to,” Miroku chuckled as everyone smiled all around them.

Sesshomaru finally realized he had closed his eyes shut and that there’s a blissful expression on his face. He finished his ramen in three gulps before staring at everyone and arching his eyes in challenge.

“Fuck, he likes it more than I do! Did you see that, Miroku?” Inuyasha exclaimed, making the others erupt in fits of laughter at the expense of the Lord of the Western Lands…

Kagome and Mrs. Higurashi decided to forego their family doctor and went instead to the nearest hospital in their area. The simple check-up turned out to be a disaster…

As you may as well know, abortion is legal in Japan. It is made legal so that the many teens who get pregnant today and aren’t ready yet for that kind of responsibility is thrown off the hook and back to being a “normal” teenager. so so that the child will not be a victim of their parents’ mistake. It is an option given to all expectant mothers, especially those still in their high school.

Like everyone else, as soon as Kagome said she’s going to have a frog test, the nurse wrote down the important details and arranged for the doctor’s appointment. She was then told to sit and wait for a while. After a few minutes, the nurse poked her head out of the nurse’s station.

“Higurashi Kagome? Please come this way,”

Kagome and her mom stood up and made their way to the cubicle. Kagome’s getting nervous now; her palms are sweating and hands shaking. As they enter the room, the said doctor performed the necessary procedures with Kagome and confirmed that indeed, she is with child.

The transparent joy Kagome had on her face changed of one with blinding fury, as the doctor asked her of the indecent proposal he had. Upon reading that Kagome is still in her senior year in high school and doesn’t seem to have a husband, the doctor asked if the idea of abortion is open to Kagome.

Mrs. Higurashi had to literally restrain her daughter from reaching out and scratching the doctor’s face with her nails. She had the doctor running outside for help as she growled at him and claw at him at the same time. If not for Mrs. Higurashi dragging her outside the hospital to calm her down, that doctor would really live to regret having asked her that question.

“I can’t believe that sensei! How can he ask that of me!? That’s—that’s just so insulting!” Kagome fumed as she took over and is now the one dragging her mom behind her.

“But dear, you know it’s only natural for them to ask that. They just want what they think is best for you, considering you’re still in secondary and you have no dana-san,” Mrs. Higurashi explained as she trotted lightly to match the furious pace of her daughter.

“Keh! What’s best for me!? I know what’s best for me, and even you—my own mother, knows what it is! And I’m already married, thank you,” Kagome ground out, not realizing she sounded like her pup’s dad at the moment.

“Hai, I know dear. But you have to forgive them since Tobviobviously don’t. And just where are we going in a fired-up hurry?”

Kagome stopped walking briskly to look at her mother sheepishly.

“I changed my mind, Mama. We’re going to Doctor Takahashi’s clinic, after all,” Kagome said, referring to their family doctor whose clinic is a little bit farther to their home. They rode on a train and after a few minutes, finally arrived.

At the Sengoku Jidai…

Inuyasha and Sesshomaru now run beside each other as they investigated the shard rumor they heard from Miroku. The village they went to is the next one after Kaede’s, just beyond Inuyasha’s forest. Even without Kagome there, they found it to be true when a large ape demon attacked them and demanded the Shikon no Tama.

“Oi, kunero! We don’t have the Shikon, duh!” Inuyasha rolled his eyes at the demon while laying the Tetsusaiga on his shoulder, goading it even more. Then Sesshomaru made his move.

It wasn’t easy, as they can’t see where the shard is exactly located, but after they cut the demon to bits and pieces, it finally made its appearance. Then they see the bees of Naraku hanging around.

“Seems like the rumors are true. Naraku is indeed too close for comfort,” Sesshomaru said as he watched the hanyou pick up the shard.

“We’d better hurry. I have to get this shard to Kagome, and Naraku will be after it,” Inuyasha said as he hurried towards the forest.

‘I’ve got a bad feeling about this,’ Inuyasha thought, suddenly uneasy. He picked up his pace, and saw that Sesshomaru’s doing the same.

When they’re near to the Goshinboku, Naraku’s scent permeated the air. Both brothers curse. Then the area pervaded with demons…

At Modern Tokyo…

Kagome finally finished her check-ups with the doctor. Mrs. Higurashi hastily explained that her daughter is already married, not just using her husband’s name yet. The crusty old sensei wiggled his bushy brows in inquiry, making Kagome laugh and feel at ease. She always did love this doctor so much since he reminded him somewhat of Jii-chan… only smarter.

“Well, lass. Congratulations, you are going to be a mama soon,” Dr. Takahashi patted Kagome’s hand while beaming at her, the sound of the baby’s heartbeat echoing in the small room.

The sound made everything so real to Kagome then. She can see the baby’s heart beating in the monitor, and thought she’d never seen anything more amazing as she cried tears of joy. She can see her mom wiping at the corner of her eyes with a hanky, and knew that she did the same.

“You were just a small little girl back then, and now… Gods, I must be getting really old,” Dr. Takahashi joked around as he finished Kagome’s ultrasound.

The doctor gave her vitamins and other prescriptions for the baby, and demanded she come back for her monthly check-ups from then on. All Kagome could do is nod; Dr. Takahashi is very like a general in the army when giving orders.

After leaving the clinic, they went to a nearby mall to get a quick meal. Then Kagome decided she’d come back early to Inuyasha, being excited about telling the soon-to-be dad about their pup. And then she saw the teddy bear and knew she had to buy it for her baby.

It was large and white, and very fluffy and cuddly. It had a bright red bow tied around its neck, and she knew their baby would love it. After toting it in her hold, they rode the train back and went home to the shrine…

“Kaze no kizu!” Inuyasha roared as he swung Tetsusaiga in the general direction of the demons coming in front of him.

Sesshomaru is also using Tokijin’s power, having it under control. The brothers are fighting back to back, protecting each other from an attack from behind. But they are tiring quickly now, though it’s not apparent. But they knew that they are outnumbered and will weaken any time soon.

“Inuyasha, go and fly back to the village. Get Sango and Miroku for help then get Kagome back here. I have a feeling the real Naraku will show around soon. I’ll hold the demons back to buy you some time,” Sesshomaru instructed his ototo without missing a beat in the battle.

“Are you out of your mind!? You’ll be overpowered in no time, Fluffy! No, I’m not leaving you here,” Inuyasha stubbornly snapped back.

“Yes, then we’ll both be dead or at the mercy of that bastard. We won’t have any chance of bringing him down then. Do you want that to happen? Think of your mate,”

The hanyou scowled in reaction.

“Do as I say, Inuyasha. And I promise I won’t be giving in to these filthy demons. I’ll slaughter each and every one of them. You’ll see the evidence when you get back,” Sesshomaru arrogantly stated, masking his reassurance with his usual bored tone.

“Keh! Rather I’d see your body lying somewhere in this chaos when I get back! You’d better be as good as your word, Fluffy. I’d hate to take care of Rin when you’re gone,” Inuyasha demanded with a melodramatic sigh for Sesshy’s benefit then he sprinted out of the battlefield, looking back at his onisan one last time.

‘Stay alive for us, ‘Nii-chan,’ Inuyasha thought as he began backtracking to the village. Several demons got past Sesshomaru, and he knew he can’t hit them without hurting the hanyou too. So he leaves it up to his brother.

Inuyasha never paused in his flight as he continuously swiped at and ducked at the demons hounding him. He increased his speed, adrenaline pumping through his veins to aid him. Finally, he’s at the edge of the village, calling Kaede’s name in a true roar.

The watchman saw the demons following the hanyou, and sounded the alarm. The entire village emptied out of their huts to race to the shrine. They would be safe there. Kirara flies overhead, with Sango and Miroku on her back, ready for battle. Kaede rides on a horse with Shippo flung over her shoulder, her bow and arrows at the ready.

“Kaede-baba! Go and make a barrier for your village. Hayaku! The stupid monsters are nearing the village. Sango and Miroku, go to the Goshinboku. Sesshomaru’s there fighting the other demons and he’s going to lose his energy soon. He’ll need your help so hurry. Shippo, I want you to take care of Rin and the other children for me. Tell Jaken Sesshomaru said he’ll be left here to help and protect all of you, or he’ll gut him himself okay?” The hanyou managed to wink at the obviously frightened kitsune cub, making him giggle a little. He nods and does as he bids.

The others are already preparing to do as Inuyasha said when they all turned back to him and asked at the same time,

“What about you, Inuyasha? Where are you going?”

He looked back at them as he jumped up in the air, a roguish grin on his face.

“I’m going to get my wife,”

Kagome’s halfway up the shrine steps with the teddy cuddled against her when she felt something’s going to go wrong. Calling back to her mom who’s well behind her, she hurried to reach the top steps and make for the well when the well house’s doors slammed open and revealed her mate. His head swiveled to her direction and pinned her with his intent stare.

The grim expression on Inuyasha’s face grated at her nerves and the teddy falls down unnoticed as she ran to her husband’s arms, her pulse beating frantically with each step. His arms fin clo close in on her to hold her and she snuggled against him.

“I’m sorry, Inuyasha-kun! I shouldn’t have left. I know you’re angry, but—“ Kagome’s cut off by Inuyasha.

“Hush, Kagome. We have no time for that. We’ve got to go back. NOW,” Inuyasha said as he tipped her head up to meet his gaze. Something’s definitely up with her scent, he thought.

“But I’ve got something to—wait, what happened?” Kagome forgot about her confession and focused on the serious expression Inuyasha sports. She knew it isn’t her so…

Her mate answered all her questions and renewed her terror with one word:

“Naraku,”

“Is everyone alright? Where is he? Is Shippo—“

“Ssh. Everyone’s fine when I left, but Sesshomaru’s critical. I left him to fight the demon hordes to get you. Sango and Miroku’s with him now. Shippo’s back at the village with Kaede and the others, safe at the barrier surrounding them,”

“Iku,” Kagome said determinedly as she felt her courage return to her. Inuyasha had just swept her up into his arms to carry her back to the well, when Mrs. Higurashi came upon them.

“Kagome? What’s going on, dear? Why is Inuyasha here now?” She asked as she picked up her grandchild’s teddy bear.

“We have to hurry back, Mama. Something’s gone terribly wrong,” At her mom’s blank stare, she said,

“Naraku’s coming. My friends need me now, Mama. Onegai,” Kagome pleaded.

Mrs. Higurashi’s thoughts came to a stop and she felt her body become paralyzed for a moment. Her beautiful little girl is going to battle the most evil and the most terrifying demon of all demons. She might not make it back alive…

How can she let her daughter leave when she knew there’s a chance Kagome won’t go back?

“No! You are not going. Do you hear me?” She shrieked at the mates, her fear and terror reflecting in her eyes.

“I’m sorry, Mama. But this is no school dance or prom that I can miss. You can’t ground me now and expect me to obey. The lives of others are at stake here, Mama. My friends’ lives—and Inuyasha’s. I’ve got to go,” Kagome said in a stern voice, her eyes sad.

Mrs. Higurashi’s eyes caught her son-in-law’s amber ones, pleading with him. And in that one moment, they understood each other through it…

‘I don’t want her to die. I want her to come back,’

‘I’ll take care of her. I won’t let anything happen to Kagome,’

‘She’s always been so stubborn… but always brave and willing to do what’s right. And she loves you. I can’t stop her from going if it means your life,’

‘I know,’

‘But please… let her live. Let me get my daughter back, onegai!’

‘Hai. I promise she’ll be back—we’ll both be back,’

Another promise is made…

“I love you, Mama. Tell Souta and Jii-chan I said goodbye,” Kagome said goodbye to her mom, refraining from letting her tears fall. Her mother didn’t restrain herself and clutched at the teddy in her arms like a lifeline as she nodded.

“I love you too, baby. Come back to us okay?”

“Sayonara,”

And she only noticed her daughter never answered her question after she saw them disappear on the well house and the blue light flashed, making her fall to her knees and sob her heart out…

~*~

Inuyasha jumped to the well, Kagome still in his arms. He kept staring at her, as though memorizing her face to his mind for the last time. She’s looking back at him, tears checked.

“Kagome…”

She puts her fingers up to his lips to stop his words. She’s lamenting the fact she never got to tell him about the baby. And now…

“Ssshh, Inuyasha. We’ll get over this. We’ll make it through. Together,”

“Yes, together. But I want to ask you something. Are you—?” Kagome stopped him by pulling his head down for a passionate kiss.

“I love you, my hanyou,” Kagome whispered against his mouth as they separated and the blue light disappeared around them, never giving him the chance to answer back…

So they emerge from the well to enter the final battle that will change their lives…
