The Northern Lord and Last Minute Questions
Chapter 25:
Kagome walked the children into the dinning hall and they took off to their seats. Kagome glanced around and saw that everyone was present except for Sesshomaru and one other empty chair. Sango and Miroku were talking quietly between themselves. Inuyasha and Maya were also talking although from what Kagome could see it was more like arguing. Kouga was staring off into space and only smiled slightly at her as she entered. Jino was sitting in his seat glaring at her. Kagome could feel his eyes on her since she walked into the room.
She carefully walked over to her seat and tried to smile at everyone. Jino was still glaring at her and it made her uncomfortable. She knew that there was going to be problems with that demon before the ball was over. Kagome sat at her seat and waited patiently for Sesshomaru to arrive. She didn't have to wait long.
Sesshomaru entered the room with a demon Kagome didn't recognize. He was a cat demon of some kind. He was old and had graying hair. His eyes were dull green like his life hadn't seen much happiness. Sesshomaru stood at the end of the table and waited for the demon to seat himself. Sesshomaru held out his hand to Kagome and she stood and walked to his side.
"Kagome, this is Lord Van. The Lord of the Northern Lands." Kagome bowed deeply to the new lord. "Lord Van, this is my intended Lady Kagome," He started indicating others around the table, "her son Shippo, the demon slayer Sango, the monk Miroku, Prince Inuyasha, Lord Kouga, Lord Jino, the priestess Maya, and my daughter Rin." Lord Van stood and bowed to the group.
"It is a pleasure to meet you all." After sitting again Sesshomaru nodded slightly at Kagome and she sat as well. As soon as Sesshomaru sat the meal began and servant were placing platters on the table. Once the last servant left Sesshomaru reached for his plate to get food. Kagome gently laid her hand on his arm and took his plate from him. She loaded his plate with all of his favorites before setting in back in front of him. Sesshomaru nodded at her and she smiled back. Then it happened.
Jino stood from his seat and sent the chair slamming on the floor behind him. "This is a disgrace! You have humans in your castle and at your table, a human wench as your intended and a half-breed as the Western Prince! You are a disgrace to demons Sesshomaru. You do not deserve to be Lord of these lands!" Kagome clenched her fists under the table and tried to calm her emotions before she did something to hurt the demons in the room. Sesshomaru stood calmly from his seat and faced Jino.
"You will not speak to me or those under my protection in such a manner Lord Jino. You only have so much protection as a visiting lord on my lands." Jino threw his head back and laughed.
"These lands should not belong to a weak and pathetic demon like you. My, my Sesshomaru, look how far the Western Lord has fallen. You are a-" Kagome didn't hear anything else that was said has she felt her powers straining to be released. She stood from the table and gestured for the children to be removed from the room. Servants quickly gathered the children and left. Once they were out of the room Kagome turned on Jino with eyes blazing. Jino laughed harder when he saw her.
"What? Now your little human is going to stand up to a demon, a Taiyoukai at that. Ha!" Kagome let some of her powers seep from her form and surround her body in a blue glow. Kagome launched herself up and over the table without disturbing anything to land directly in front of the southern lord. Quick as any demon Kagome had him by the throat and against the wall. Kagome leaned in close to him as he struggled to breathe.
"You would do well to watch what you say to my future mate while you are in my presence." Kagome whispered to the lord. "I am not someone you want to cross. Next time you decide to insult what is mine you will not get off so lucky and I will not restrain myself." Kagome tightened her grip on him before letting him go. He fell to the floor holding his throat. "Now, you are excused from dinner. A servant will bring some food that is easy on the throat to your room. We expect to see you at the ball tomorrow evening." Kagome stepped back and a few servants sprang forward to assist the lord to his chambers. Kagome waited to turn around until her temper was under control. Once she was sure that she wasn't going to purify anyone she turned and bowed deeply to Sesshomaru.
"I apologize for my behavior my lord." Kagome stood with her eyes on the floor, waiting. She felt a hand on her chin and sighed. She let Sesshomaru lift her chin to face him. He had an amused spark in his eyes while his face remained impassive.
"While it is custom to let this Sesshomaru handle insults to this person, you did well." Sesshomaru stepped back and gestured to the table. Kagome walked back to her seat and sat with her eyes down. Silence remained for a few more minutes until Kagome heard the Northern Lord laugh.
"Sesshomaru, You choose well with this one. I completely approve." Kagome looked up at the lord and smiled warmly at him. The rest of the group was looking at her like she had sprung another head except for her mother. Mya was looking at her with a smile and tears in eyes. Kagome looked at Sesshomaru and smiled. He nodded and gestured toward the food. Everyone started to fill their plates and the rest of dinner went off without a glitch.
After dinner Sesshomaru approached Kagome.
"Would you like to take a walk in the gardens?" Kagome nodded and placed her hand on his arm. They walked through the gardens until they came to the koi pond. The moon was almost full and was reflecting on the pond. They sat near the pond. Sesshomaru placed a moon blossom behind her ear and Kagome blushed deeply.
"You do know that now that you've agreed, I wont let you out of it." Kagome smiled and nodded. "We will be mated at the end of this month. On your birthday a think."
"The last day of the month is my birthday." Kagome looked up at the moon and smiled. "But I think that we should be mated the day before that. On my birthday the well is going to close and i want my mother to be here." Sesshomaru nodded.
"It appears you have learned a lot from that book i gave you."
"Yes, I have. There is just a few things that I have questions about. What happens tomorrow when you introduce me to everyone at the ball?"
"There will be many demons there. Only the lords are staying here at the palace but there will be many demons and demonesses from all over the area arriving and leaving tomorrow. You will be the last introduced to the gathering. When you are, you will walk to the bottom of the stairs and bow. Then you will stand and wait. I will tell them that you are my intended and have agreed to be my mate. Then you will walk up the stairs until you are on the one right below me. You'll turn and face the crowd and tilt your head to the right. I will mark the left side of your throat. This is the first of three marks that I will place on you." Kagome nodded and tilted her head in thought.
"I read in the book that in most cases of higher classed demons some other demonesses will challenge the chosen and then she must win in a battle to be proven worthy." Sesshomaru nodded.
"There will be at least one demoness come to you and challenge you for mating rights. If you win then I will place my second mark on you. Should you lose I will either mate or kill the winner and we will not be aloud to mate because you will not be considered strong enough." Kagome nodded and frowned.
"Okay, then the last mark is placed during the ceremony, correct?" Sesshomaru nodded.
"The last mark is the most critical because it requires that we mark each other. Since you are not a demoness I will place a cut on the junction of my neck and shoulder. You will drink some of my blood and push just a small amount of your juki into me. This will create a the bond and complete the marking. There is one more mark but it is optional. When we mate for the first time I can bind our life forces together by marking you a fourth time." Kagome nodded. And looked up at the moon.
"I think its time for me to retire." Kagome rose and walked back into the palace. Kagome walked through the halls lost in deep thought. She knew that tomorrow was going to be important for her future. As she slipped into bed that night she wondered if she would be able to go through with it and leave her mother and her old life completely behind. Kagome closed her eyes and drifted to sleep with a sigh.
