Swim
Chapter Twenty-Six
The small fire youkai stood guard as the four women splashed in the water behind him. Kagome had demanded that the wolf show them where they could bathe and clean up. Splashing was heard as he made sure Kouga and no one else bothered them. He could sense that the other three males were close, not far from his left.
Kagome ducked under the water and began to swim. It was refreshing, helping to ease away some of her tension. She could still hear Keiko and Yukina's laughter under the water. They both seemed to be happy, not that she could blame them. She just felt sorry for her and Rin, she was more confused on the Rin part.
The man had said he'd had his reasons for claiming the girl but Kagome couldn't imagine what they would be. He hadn't shown any sexual interest in her before this. The times when he'd come to visit the only person he'd flirted with had been her. Kurama had always been polite and friendly towards Rin. At the same time, maybe the others had seen what it had taken her time to see; that Rin had a crush on Yusuke. Could that be why he hadn't taken an open interest in her?
She broke the surface and swam over to the girl in question. 'She looks as bad as I feel.' Kagome stopped beside her, "Whatcha doing?"
"Oh, nothing. Wanna race?" Rin smiled at her, trying to get her own mind off a few problems.
"Sure, where do you wanna swim to?" Kagome got beside her, the water reaching up to their chests. "Above or under?"
"Above and to that large rock down there." Rin pointed about twenty feet away. "Keiko can you count to three for us?"
"Sure," Keiko waded over to them. "One, Two, Three." Both girls took off treading through the water. "Come on Kagome, she's leaving you behind."
"I think Rin will win." Yukina appeared beside her watching.
Both girls swam, Rin knew she was leaving Kagome behind. One of the benefits of having been taught by Jaken to swim. She smiled when her hand touched to rock announcing herself as the winner. Kagome stopped swimming, grinning at her.
"No fair, you were raised by a toad."
"Yes, Master Jaken taught me how to swim." Rin had to admit the toad had been very informative about a lot of things. She looked down when she felt something brush past her foot, the water was above her head now. Both girls were having to keep themselves afloat, "Something just touched my foot."
"Huh? I don't sense anything." Kagome couldn't see anything either but the water was darker this far out.
"There it is again, I felt it. Something is in h.." She was pulled under, she held her breath. Something was wrapped around her ankle cutting through the water, dragging her away from the others.
"Rin?" Kagome watched her go down and screamed. She snatched the rosary off and dove underneath. Keiko's yell was heard as she swam deeper, trying to locate the girl. Something grabbed ahold of her wrist as she neared. Her senses still couldn't pick up anything. Her energy shot out wrapping around the tenacle that held her. The water vibrated as it screamed, she swam towards the surface needing air.
Rin felt her lungs burning, then it let her go. Not wasting time she made her way to the surface. Air filled her lungs as her head broke the surface, it came in gasps. Kagome was calling her name.
Kagome swam over towards the girl as she screamed and was pulled back in. "Fuck," The creature broke the surface showing itself. A tenacle wrapped around her neck lifting her out the water. It was some type of giant squid with three mouths, all filled with sharp teeth. It had Rin wrapped with several of the tenacles pulling her towards it's middle mouth. She grabbed ahold of the tenacle causing herself to dangle applying more pressure to her windpipe. Her energy shot down the appendage, causing it to jerk in pain.
Blades that greatly resembled grass snaked across the water spearing the creature. It dropped both girls into the water Rin still wrapped in the severed tenacles. Kagome saw her go down unable to move. She dived under trying to reach her. The girl was struggling out of the severed limbs.
Free finally, they broke the surface to see the squid floating, torn apart. Hiei was standing on the largest piece of head looking at them. His eyes roamed over both women, "Can you make it back to the shore?" He was looking at Rin.
"I think so," She nodded before turning and began swimming back. Her ribs hurt from being crushed. Her arms hurt as she swam back, she was sure he'd been trying to tenderize her before eating her. Her legs almost collapsed on her when she tried to stand finally. The water was up to her waist when Youko met her wrapping a fur around her.
He picked her up taking the pressure off her bruised legs. Knowing the others would tend to the miko he left with her. She moaned in pain as he carried her up the mountain, he loosened his hold some.
Rin blushed when he layed her down on the furs and began running his hands over her. "I'm fine, just a little sore."
He ignored her, needing to make sure that nothing was broken. When she appeared to be merely bruised he sighed in relief. "You will be that way for a few days. I'll be back shortly."
She watched him leave and closed her eyes.
