Getting The Last Laugh
A/N: Ok. I am thinking that there will only be 2 more chapters and then the epilogue. I am not sure. I may just put the rest of the story in the next chapter and deal with the epilogue. I have loved writing this story and am saddened that it is coming to an end, but I have other stories that need me and so, my muse and I must end this journey. Thanks for riding along with us and thank you for all of the support and reviews.

Detective Suikotsu Namaru was a gentleman, but upon seeing the injury to the old fellow that worked for Sesshomaru made him see red. There was no need to inflict such a wound to an old soul, even if he was mouthy and insolent.
After checking the perimeter of the house, Suikotsu determined that the intruder must have been watching the residence for a while and had waited until he was sure that Sesshomaru had left the house to make his move.
It was clear that the intruder was the same one that had entered the house before, and the fact that Kagome Higurashi was no longer there told him that the intruder had gotten what he had come for.
When Jaken had revived, he had called the police and waited for them to come to the house. When they arrived, he had shown them the video surveillance and then started to moan that his head was killing him.
Renkotsu had finally arrived and volunteered to drive the old man to the hospital seeing as how he did not want an ambulance. Thankfully, Jaken had agreed, but not before he snapped at a couple of the uniformed officers about tracking mud into his employer’s home.
Once he was alone, Suikotsu rewound the surveillance tape and watched the drama unfold. Kagome had done her best to fight off her attacker and had nearly gotten away, but at the end, he had caught her and had jammed a needle into her neck, rendering her unconscious.
Shaking his head, he could only imagine the terrifying thoughts that had run through Kagome’s head. He gritted his teeth and then gasped. The intruder had finally turned and Suikotsu could see his whole face.
He knew that man. He was a local thug by the name of Goshinki and he was rumored to have done some killings for an unknown person. In fact, it was said that anyone could buy Goshinki if the price was right.
He looked through the other images and grinned. Goshinki had really screwed himself this time, and when found, he would tell the police who he was working for, or else.
The phone began to ring, and Suikotsu simply glanced at it, thinking that the answering machine would pick it up. But, it kept ringing and so, he answered it. Before he could get a word out, Sesshomaru Takashiro began to angrily demand answers as to why his call was not picked up sooner, and Suikotsu sighed. He knew how protective Sesshomaru was of Kagome. This was not going to be very pretty.
“Mr. Takashiro? This is Detective Suikotsu Namaru. I need for you to come home as quickly as you can. I am afraid that I have some bad news for you.” Suikotsu said.
He listened as Sesshomaru caught his breath and then hung up. Clearly, the man would probably speed to get home. Gathering up his notes and the surveillance tape, Suikotsu went outside to wait for the man.
Sure enough, Sesshomaru arrived and when he stepped out of the car, he glanced around and scowled at all of the police that were in his yard.
“What happened?” He demanded, not caring for pleasantries. He waited as Suikotsu flipped open his notepad.
“All we have right now is that someone snuck into your home, harmed Jaken, and drugged and took Kagome out of your home. We have him on surveillance and know who it was. We will get Ms. Higurashi back.” Suikotsu said.
Sesshomaru’s golden eyes narrowed. “Who was it who dared to come into my home uninvited?” He asked, his voice deadly calm.
“I can’t tell you that, sir. All I can say is that we have enough to go after him and will make him pay. If you will please excuse me, I am being paged.” Suikotsu said, his hand upon his vibrating beeper.
As Suikotsu answered his page, Sesshomaru walked into his house and up the stairs. He walked into his bedroom and found it to be in complete disarray. He sat down on his bed and held his head in his hands. He never should have left Kagome alone. He should have stayed with her.
He looked up when he heard footsteps. Suikotsu appeared at the door and entered the room. With a heavy sigh, he sat down and said, “I am breaking all of the rules, but the call I just received was from my lieutenant and she said that a man that was hanging out on the docks witnessed a shooting.”
“Was it Kagome?” Sesshomaru demanded, his voice cracking. He was relieved when the detective shook his head.
“No. It was the man who took her that got shot. It seems that the one who hired him decided that Goshinki was too much of a liability to keep around and had him killed. We have a description of the man who shot him and I believe that I may know who it was.” Suikotsu said.
“Are you going to tell me?” Sesshomaru asked. Hell, if it would get Kagome back home, he would get down on his knees and beg this detective for all the information he had.
Suikotsu knew that he could lose his job, but from the look on the man’s face, he could not deny him.
“I believe that the killer was one of two people. We have been investigating them for a very long time and know that you have a connection to one of them.” He explained.
Suddenly, it all made sense. Naraku Onigumo. He wanted Kagome and had been rumored to have shady ties with people who would do anything for a buck.
“The Onigumo brothers are dangerous characters and I would suggest letting us handle them. We will return her to you, Mr. Takashiro. I promise.” Suikotsu said, his hand upon Sesshomaru’s shoulder.
Nodding, Sesshomaru watched as Suikotsu got up and walked to the door. “I will call if I find out anything more. Please try not to worry, though I know that you will anyways.” He said.
Sesshomaru wanted to throw things at the wall. So, that was Naraku’s game, was it? Fine. He could play dirty as well, but he would need some help.
Picking up the phone, he dialed a number and waited for it to be picked up. Naraku was going down. For good.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Naraku sighed happily and snuggled Kagome closer to his body. He loved the way she fit into his arms and he took in a deep breath of her heavenly scent. She smelled like wild flowers.
He glanced up and narrowed his eyes when his brother entered his room. He wrapped Kagome up in the covers and glared at his brother.
“This had better be good.” He snapped. Muso looked very happy and he had to wonder if the younger man had gotten laid.
“Goshinki is dead. His body is floating in the water at the docks.” He said, proudly. He waited for his brother to congratulate him, and was stunned when his brother’s face twisted into a mask of rage.
“Let me get this straight. You took him to the docks; the same docks where my boat is supposed to arrive and you shot a man. How in the hell am I supposed to board my boat with my woman if there are fucking cops surrounding the docks?” He demanded.
Muso’s face froze. “Nobody knows that Goshinki is there.” He said, weakly. He gulped when his brother eased the young woman from his body, threw off the covers, and then approached him in the nude. “Did it ever occur to you that someone could have found him by now? There are dock workers crawling all over that damn place, you idiot!”
Muso paled as his brother continued to walk around him, mumbling about how he had probably just ruined his plans. When his brother stopped, Muso breathed a sigh of relief. He heard his brother walk up behind him and then lean over to whisper in his ear.
“You should never cross me, Muso. It isn’t wise.” Naraku said softly. As his brother began to tremble, he grabbed the back of his head and ran a sharp blade over his throat.
Muso’s eyes widened in shock and he tried to cry out to his brother, but the words came out all garbled.
With his last breath, he turned and gave Naraku a pitiful glance before falling to the ground in a bloody heap.
Naraku glared at the mess his brother made and shook his head. He had to get the body out of the room before Kagome awoke. After all, it would not do for the bride to be scared shitless on her wedding day.
Grabbing his brother up, Naraku hefted the man’s corpse over his shoulder and carried him out of the room. In his younger days, he would have left the body and not cared who saw it, but he was a man now and had priorities. Besides, he didn’t want anyone to know to think that he was capable of murder.
He took Muso down to the basement and threw him on the ground. He glared at the walls and finally located a shovel. It would take some time, but Kagome would not awake for several hours and so, he had plenty of time. But, before he could bury his brother, he needed to deal with the blood that was on his bedroom floor. Sadly, it was the cleaning lady’s day off, and so, he would have to do it himself.
It had taken nearly two and a half hours, but he finally got the mess cleaned up. Thankfully, he had opted not to have carpeting installed in his bedroom and was grateful that all he had to do was wipe up the blood and then go back over the area with bleach. Problem solved.
He quickly showered and then toweled off, and as he was walking down the stairs to the first floor, he smiled and thought of the perfect place to bury his dear brother. But, before he could do anything, the doorbell rang and he cursed his luck. This was simply not his day. Didn’t these fools know that he was about to be a married man and had things to do before the ceremony?
He stomped to the door and opened it. He glared up at the three faces before him. “What in the hell do you want?” He snapped.

Kikyo groaned and felt the tears come to her eyes. She had been called to the bank and had been told that unless she paid the mortgage on the house, then the bank would be forced to foreclose on the property and she would have to vacate her home.
She had done everything short of begging to plea for time, and it had finally worked. She had been given another week to come up with nearly three thousand dollars. She had thanked the man and promised to be back in later in the week.
Now, as she sat in her car, she began to make plans. She would call Inu Yasha and tell him about the house. After all, it was in his name and he should pay it.
When her call was picked up, she nearly screamed in anger. The voice on the other end of the line was not Inu Yasha, but another woman.
“Put my husband on the phone, you trashy slut.” Kikyo snapped. She heard the other woman’s sharp intake of breath and then heard Inu Yasha’s concerned voice. Good. She had made the little whore cry.
When Inu Yasha came onto the line, Kikyo demanded, “Why is that little bitch answering your phone?”
Inu Yasha did his best to control his temper and said, “Because, she is my fiancé and has the right to answer my phone whenever she wants to. Now, what do you want?”
“We are not even divorced so how is it that you can go and propose to another woman?” Kikyo asked.
“We are separated and the papers are being drawn up. Kikyo, if this is the only reason you called, then I am hanging up.” He said, his tone infuriatingly calm.
“No, that isn’t why I called. Listen, I need three thousand dollars or else the house will go into foreclosure.” She said.
Inu Yasha was silent for several minutes and he then said, “Let me think about it and I will call you back.”
Kikyo grinned in triumph. This was going better than she had hoped. She hung up and drove to one of the local fast food restaurants and ordered a burger and large fry. She made sure to tell them to grand size it and she waited for her order.
As she drove home, she munched on fries and listened to the radio. As she pulled into the driveway, her phone rang.
“Hello, Inu Yasha.” She purred. She heard him sigh. “Shiori and I talked and we have decided to pay off the house note. But, there is a catch.” He said.
Kikyo felt her stomach gurgle. “Well, what is it?” She demanded. She could only guess what her husband and his pig of a fiancé wanted.
“We want you to move out. I will pay a year’s rent for an apartment for you, but after that year, you will have to pay your own way. That is the deal, Kikyo. Take it or when our divorce goes to court, I will get the house anyways and you won’t get shit. Shiori is pregnant as well, and I want to raise my baby in a house. So, you have one day to make your decision, and after that day, I will rescind my offer.” He said, and then hung up the phone.
Kikyo’s face was pure white. He was throwing her out of their home so that he could move his bitch and her pregnant ass in? How dare he? How could he do this to her? Shaking her head, Kikyo got out of her car and marched inside of her house. She walked over to the phone and picked it up.
She called Kaguya’s office and waited for her attorney to come onto the line. “Good afternoon, Kikyo. How are you?” Came the silky voice in greeting.
“He wants to throw me out of my home, Kaguya. What do I do?” Kikyo wailed. She heard Kaguya sighed.
“Kikyo, besides that bumbling old fool, Inu Yasha has another attorney on his side who is working with old Myoga. Her name Yuki and she is a bitch in the courtroom. She has called and basically demanded several things that, to be honest, Inu Yasha is entitled to. And, there is one more piece of bad news. That premarital agreement that we thought could not be entered into evidence, well, there was a witness to the signing of that contract. Myoga’s legal assistant, to be precise. The fact that it was sighed with a witness who has nothing to gain from either of you makes it likely that they will get the agreement to be enforced. I’m sorry, but I have done all I can. I can make them an offer for you, if you would like.” Kaguya said, her voice sounding bored.
Kikyo shook her head and hung up without answering. She sat down and looked around her house. It was over. She was done for. Fine. He wanted the house, he could have it. But, her new apartment would cost him a pretty penny.
She got out the phone book and looked for apartment complexes. She found the one she had been looking for and dialed the number. Soon, she was standing in the apartment manager’s office, signing the rental agreement and handing over a check for the security deposit.
Once in her car, she dialed Inu Yasha’s number and said, “Fine. The house is yours. I have found an apartment and have already placed the security deposit. I will drop by your apartment and show you the papers. Then, I wish to discuss this divorce with you. I have a proposition for you.”
Inu Yasha hesitated for a minute, but then agreed. “Shiori will be here, Kikyo. Do not even think about insulting her. I mean it. If you wish to deal with me, you will respect my girl.” He said.
Kikyo huffed. She was his girl, at least, legally. “Fine. Whatever you say. Just tell her that I don’t want to hear her opinion or anything else she has to say. Don’t forget. I, too, am pregnant with your baby and it is my baby that comes first.” She said, crossing her fingers.
“Yeah, I know that you are pregnant, but you need to remember that I am still not certain that the baby you carry is mine. Until I see the results of a paternity test, then I will continue to doubt.” Inu Yasha explained. He gave her directions to his apartment and then told her to hurry up. He and his special girl had plans for that evening.
Gritting her teeth, Kikyo made her way to Inu Yasha’s apartment and parked beside his truck. She climbed out and had to admit, the complex was very nice. She made her way to the door and knocked. When it finally opened, Kikyo looked past Inu Yasha and saw a young woman with silvery hair in the kitchen, cooking. Snorting, Kikyo rolled her eyes and walked into the apartment.
“Nice place you have here, Inu Yasha.” She said, though not really meaning it. They didn’t have a lot of furniture, but they did have a lot of movies and a nice entertainment unit complete with a big screen television and DVD player.
“Let’s cut the bullshit.” He snapped. “Watch the potty-mouth, Inu Yasha.” Shiori said, her voice light and velvety.
Inu Yasha grinned towards the kitchen and shook his head. “Ok, what do you want?” He asked.
Kikyo sat down on the couch and placed her purse in her lap. She took out the rental agreement and shoved it towards her husband. “This is where I wish to live. In addition to the rent, I want you to pay me an extra two thousand dollars a month so that I can continue to live. You placed me into a lifestyle that I am accustomed to, and the fact that you are rich will help my plea for alimony.” She said.
Inu Yasha read through the rental agreement. Actually, he and Shiori had figured that she would come and ask for at least five grand, but thankfully, she had not. He finally looked up and motioned for Shiori to join him.
“What do you think, honey?” He asked, ignoring Kikyo venomous glare. She watched as the young woman bit her lip and then smiled. “If you are alright with it, then so am I. The sooner you can divorce is the sooner we can marry.” She said, her eyes filled with love.
“Damn right, baby.” He said, giving her a kiss on her cheek. He glanced at Kikyo and then picked up the phone. “May I speak to Yuki, please?” He asked. He waited for the attorney to get on the line and he grinned.
“Yuki, this is Inu Yasha Takashiro. I am sitting with Kikyo and we have come to an agreement.” He said. He repeated the agreement to the attorney and then set up a meeting for the following Monday to come and sign the papers. He glanced at Kikyo.
“You will be there on Monday. No excuses. If you don’t show, the deal is off.” He said. He watched as Kikyo nodded.
“Yes, that will be fine. Thank you so much, Yuki.” He said, satisfaction resounding in his voice.
He hung up the phone and watched as Shiori walked back into the kitchen. He glanced at Kikyo.
“Fine. Now, you can leave. I will see you Monday. Oh, and Kikyo. You really need to talk to the doctor about the weight you are packing on.” He suggested.
“Fuck you. I will see you Monday.” She snapped. When she was gone, Shiori joined him by the window to watch her leave. The young woman cocked her head and then looked up at Inu Yasha.
“You know, when she walks, her backside makes me think of two little piggies wrestling underneath a blanket. Do you think that she even cares that she looks like that?” Shiori asked.
Inu Yasha could not answer her. He could not get the image of what Shiori had suggested out of his mind, and he was laughing. When he finally calmed down, he asked, “Is dinner ready. I am starved.”
Shiori giggled and nodded. They turned and went to eat while a very lonely Kikyo drove home to an empty and cold house.

Suikotsu glared at Naraku. “We have a search warrant for the premises and you are to stay the hell out of our way.” He said, a grim smile crossing his features. “This time, you really screwed yourself, Onigumo.”
“Leave my home, you insect.” Naraku snarled. No. This was not happening. Not now. Not when all of his dreams were about to be realized.
“Your little errand boy was discovered at the docks, Naraku. And, we found his car abandoned a couple of miles away. Would you like to know what was found in the front seat?” Suikotsu asked.
Naraku opened his mouth, but closed it quickly when the detective produced a small tape recorder. Without a word, the detective pressed the play button and suddenly, Naraku understood that he had grossly misjudged Goshinki.
As how words played from the tape, police officers entered the house and began to search. Renkotsu and the other officer who had appeared with Suikotsu on the front stoop went upstairs and after a couple of minutes, Renkotsu reappeared with a drugged Kagome limp in his arms.
“Look who we found in Mr. Onigumo’s bed. Kidnapping and drugging will keep you in prison until you are old and gray, Mr. Onigumo.” Renkotsu sneered.
He allowed one of the uniformed officers to take Kagome from his arms and carry her from the house. Another officer was already calling for an ambulance.
Suikotsu turned to Naraku and gave him an evil grin. “Naraku Onigumo. You are under arrest. Whatever you say can and will be used against you. You have the right to an attorney, but if you cannot afford and attorney, then one will be appointed to you. Do you understand these rights in which I have read?” He asked.
Naraku glared at him and kept quiet. He was handcuffed and led out of the house. He looked over to see Kagome being cradled by that peon cop, and his own robe covered her. Damn it. The last thing he heard before the police car door shut was one of the officers yelling that they had found a body in the basement and that they would be adding a charge of murder to the laundry list of charges already pending against him.
Once in the car, he closed his eyes. His attorney would have to pull some strings and bride some people, but in the end, he had no doubt that he would be acquitted.
