CHAPTER 24: LIONS DEN
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kagome woke up with something snuggling tightly up against her stomach. She cracked an eye open to see who or what it was resting against her. Kagome found her answer; there was a little girl with black-brown hair sleeping spread eagle against Kagome. The girl wore a pink night gown with red roses embroidered on the collar. ‘She’s so adorable,’ Kagome thought while she looked at the little girl. ‘She almost looks like a cherub.’
All of a sudden, Kags’ little angel started snoring. That nearly made her laugh, however; when Kagome thought more about it, questions of where did she come from, arose.
Kagome tried to disentangle herself from the little cherub in bed with her, but said little girl had a different idea. Kagome propped herself up and sat there for a moment trying to think of a way to escape her entrapment.
“No! Rin sleep some more.” Came the demanding voice of the girl that held on to Kagome even more, like a death grip around her waist.
Kagome shook her head in ponderous hilarity. The little cherub, in bed with her, was beginning to remind her of someone. ‘No…Impossible. He wouldn’t. Not a human little girl.’
“Rin?” Kagome said confused.
Upon saying the girl’s name her eyes shot wide open and looked adorably right at Kagome. Next, she smiled and then laughter came out in squeal of delight. The so called cherub jumped from the bed and landed right onto Kagome’s chest.
*Wham*
Effectively knocking all air out of her and forcing back down on the bed from which she was trying to get up from.
“Rin wants to know who you are? Are you Rin’s new babysitter?...”
“RIN! You little whelp! Just you wait until I get my hands on you!” Came a voice high pitched shrieking noise, comparable to a banshee, from outside the bedroom door.
“What is that?” Kagome winced at the voice.
“Oh! That is Jaken.” The girl giggled. “He is looking for Rin, because Rin snuck out and came into Sesshoumaru-sama’s room.”
Kagome was having a difficult time following the conversation; that was until she realized that the little girl was Rin herself, and that she was just talking in third person about herself. Kagome must have been a little slow in processing all that Rin said, for
when the last part of her sentence sank into her brain, Kagome’s pupils widen, and her breath hitched in her chest. ‘Sesshoumaru's room!’ Kagome had no time to react to this information.
The bedroom door threw open with a loud bang! *BANG!* “RIN!” came the toadish voice again.
“Jaken, Jaken! Sesshoumaru-sama has a lady in his bed. Can Rin keep her? The lady is nice to Rin. She is not like the others. Is she going to be Rin's babysitter?” Rin said, in a rushed and exuberant tone.
Kagome blushed at the comment made.
“Stupid girl!” snapped the hideous green thing, walking into the room. “Lord Sesshoumaru would never sully his sheet with a mere human whore!”
Kagome's jaw dropped. She was outraged by that statement. “Excuse me Rin.” Kagome said through clenched teeth while she picked the girl up off her, and set Rin to the side. Kagome got up off the bed, ready to kick the ass of whoever made that statement, her hands clenched tightly into a fist. ‘Whore! I don't think so, and besides such talk is not acceptable in front of a little girl.’ Her fiery, silver-blue eyes zoned in on an ugly, almost toad like, little man at the door.
“What did you call me?” her voice was deadly calm.
The little man swallowed hard, “I said that Lord Sesshoumaru would never sully the sheet with a human whore!”
"That's what I thought you said." Kagome’s hand stung after she slapped the toad like man’s face hard.
A red mark was now forming on his face in a shape of a small human hand.
Rin's innocent laughter spilled out at Jaken, as it seemed the man turned a dark shade of green. “Jaken made the lady mad. Rin is sorry for lady, yep- yep. Not Jaken. Jaken was rude to the nice lady.”
Kagome thought that if the little man turned any green he would explode. ‘He looks familiar.’
“You!” he seethed, as his sick yellow eyes focused on the bed where Rin was sitting. Jaken then moved his death glare to Kagome. “Will pay for that!”
Rin shot up from the bed and ran out of the room leaving Kagome to glare daggers back at Jaken. However, Kagome notice that the little cherub didn’t seem to be at all upset by what just happened. Kagome could hear her giggles echoing from the hall way as she ran.
Jaken sneered before saying something. “Don’t get to comfortable tramp. Sesshoumaru never keeps human women for long.” and with that he left her.
Kagome stood there in a burning blaze of indignity. Sesshoumaru was going to get an ear full, as soon as she was dressed and found him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sesshoumaru was in his study, meeting with some of the most well respected taiyoukai’s in Japan. The meeting was to talk about the particulars of a certain business arrangement, and to reminisce of the old days. He hated it. Sesshoumaru only did it out of respect for some of his father’s old friends. However, he knew ultimately that this was there way of keeping tabs on him and to see how the son of InuTaisho was doing.
The three older taiyoukais sat on the fine Italy leather ottomans near the fire place, but Sesshoumaru stood adjacent the mantel. He listened to their mindless prattle, wishing he was anywhere but here right at the moment. Sesshoumaru started to plan on how to leave this boring meeting, when thoughts of escape were interrupted when one of the elders asked him a question.
Rayen, he held counsel with his father for years and was most trusted, loyal friend. He was also part of the firm of lawyers that would decide his fate over his father’s will.
“Sesshoumaru,” Rayen asked in a commanding tone, “have you started looking for a wife? You turn thirty in one month’s time. You do remember the stipulations, don’t you?”
Sesshoumaru just nodded in reply. ‘How could I forget,’ he thought annoyingly. He was going to open his mouth to make a rude reply, when the door of his study came open. Everyone in the room turned there heads towards the direction of the door. All except Sesshoumaru, he knew who it was; her scent came to him before she even had a hand on the door knob.
The old taiyoukais looked dumbfounded at the ravishing beauty that stepped into view from the door way. No, a goddess. She was clad in black hip hugger slacks and wore a silver wrap around blouse that tied at the right hand side of her waist. The blouse only added to the silver in her eyes, while her wavy tress fell around her flawless skin.
“Sesshoumaru?” she whispered. Kagome then moved to stand in the door way revealing herself. It was then; Kagome noticed a group of old taiyoukais in the study looking a little surprised at her intrusion. ‘Oi, I just had to interrupt something.’ Kagome scanned her eyes, searching the room for Sesshoumaru. She found him leaning gracefully against the mantel of the fire place. He held her gaze boldly. However, Kagome noted that Sesshoumaru just stood there, and that he no reaction to her unannounced arrive.
“Oh! I’m so sorry for disturbing you gentlemen. Please, forgive me.” Kagome bowed respectfully, as she apologized. She then turned around to leave the study, but was halted by Sesshoumaru.
“Kagome, dearest.”
The gasps that came from the old taiyoukais lips, in the study with Sesshoumaru, made her want to laugh. Yet, Kagome didn't give in to the urge. But, then hushed whispers came soon after, like a wave of violent wind whipping around the room. ‘They sound like gossiping old women,’ Kagome smiled, and forgave them for their blatant disregard of her presence, as they talked about her.
Kagome, also, didn’t miss the endearment Sesshoumaru gave her, or the warning look he gave her. It meant that she was to act like his fiancée. ‘Put on a show Kags. You can’t rant at him for his employee’s rudeness right now, but later,’ she thought. That was her only consolation for the meantime. Kagome turned back around and gave Sesshoumaru a brilliant smile.
If Sesshoumaru hadn’t known any better he would have thought Kagome was an actress, a very good one. His gold eyes watched her as she stepped back into the study. He had seen the fury in her eyes that promised to raise hell, but then noticed it dissipate in a matter of seconds. Sesshoumaru gave her a look that said, she better hold up with her half of the deal.
“Yes, honey?” She said, with a sauce tone, and for good measure added a smile. ‘So, be it,’ she mused disconcertedly.
He raised an elegant brow at Kagome. Sesshoumaru’s honey colored eyes roamed over the length of her body. ‘Silly woman,’ he thought, ‘she has no shoes on.’
Kagome was drawn by an invisible force into the den of lions. She walked poised, with a graceful stride the mirrored Sesshoumaru. Kagome stopped when she came to Sesshoumaru’s side and stood next to him.
The others just continued to gawk, several of them speaking at once.
“Who is she?”
“Did Sesshoumaru call her dearest?”
“She called him honey, right?”
Kagome held a stoic expression that matched Sesshoumaru's perfectly. She waited, surely the lions would attack, if not physically, then in some way. ‘Be on guard. Once they over come their stupor anything could happen.’
