It was not long after escaping from the jailhouse that Bankotsu and Jakotsu found themselves riding off toward the sunset with the town disappearing behind them until it was no more than a speck on the horizon. Wanting to get as much distance between them as they could before the sheriff could discover the deputy's current condition, neither had said a word or even thought about stopping.
Even without the words being spoken, they both knew it would be many hours before they would be far enough away from the law for it to be safe to rest. Neither of them were looking forward to the battle that would no doubt ensue once they did catch up.
For his part, Bankotsu barely paid any attention to the surrounding scenery, having far too much else on his mind to be able to distract himself with the simpler things in life. The only thing currently on his mind was 'what now?'. The whole reason he had gone to that town in the first place was to follow a lead, but that lead had died before he could ever even ask him if he knew who was responsible for the deaths of his parents.
It wasn't as though this was the first time the trail had gone cold on him, but he also never had the law chasing him or an extra companion; no matter how temporary he might be.
Jakotsu on the other hand, while still not paying any attention to the landscape, did not have his mind on such serious matters as his new found friend. He was not thinking about where to go from there or even what to do once they split ways. The thought never crossed his mind that he should be looking toward or thinking about his future.
The only thing that was on his mind at that moment was the way Bankotsu's thin, but strong waist felt with his arms wrapped around it. Even if they had been caught and hung the very next moment, Jakotsu knew that he would leave this world happy; having ended this existence with such a gorgeous man beside him. Even if said man seemed to completely forget about his presence all together.
