Chapter 23: Annihilation

Fire swept through the forest
on the outskirts of the village. It was only a matter of time before the flames
began licking at the threshold of the majestic palace. The thunder of hooves
and feet exploded in their ears as the enemy marched toward the nearly abandoned fortress.

Gorai ordered all the servants to
flee. There was no time left to save anything of value. Hopefully, there would be
something left to savage. His home of countless centuries was going up in smoke
before his very eyes. He was hoping against hope that his brothers would be
able to aid him with this rebellion but alas, his missive didn’t reach either
one of them in time.

With Naraku
gone, he lost his most valuable spy. His Second-In-Command had been preoccupied
with keeping Kaori out of trouble, which didn’t leave Naraku
with any time to fulfill his duties. The last letter he’d received from Naraku informed him that his daughter gave birth to a
beautiful healthy girl.

Sadly, Gorai
probably wouldn’t survive this war to meet his grand-heir.

BAM!
BAM!

They were pounding at the
gates.

Running, Gorai
entered his bedchambers. There upon his bed lay his heavily pupped mate. Emi
was rubbing her enlarged tummy with slow soothing hands. The fighting was too
much and she wished that the humans would leave them in peace. But she knew
that was not going to happen. They (the humans) were greedy and wanted more of
their land for themselves, more than what they were willing to share.

Being three months into her
gestation, Emi was too far gone to travel and she didn’t want to risk going
into labor early—she still had a whole moon cycle to keep the pup within her
womb.

“My love, Miso is waiting to
take you to my brother,” Gorai said sullenly.

“No, Gorai,
please… I-I can’t do this, not without you,” Emi pleaded, gripping his hand
tightly.

“There is no other way. If you
stay, you and our pup would surely die and I can’t have that. I won’t allow
that to be your fate,” Gorai replied.

“What am I to do, my beloved?
If we are able to take back what is ours, how do I go on?” Emi asked with tears
now free flowing down her face.

Sighing in defeat, Gorai knew that this day would come, but he never expected
to tell her amid the chaos and the destruction of their home.

“Naraku
will help you-”

“Naraku?
He’s-“

“Is my son,” Gorai admitted.

“Wh-!”

The building rumbled, shaking
on its’ foundation. Parts of the ceiling cracked with some of the plaster
crumbling.

“I was betrothed to another. My
father was not pleased with my choice in a mate and broke the betrothal. At the time however, I did not know of
my pending fatherhood until after we were mated,” Gorai
rushed to explain.

Confusion was clearly writing
across her face. “I don’t-I don’t understand. I thought Miso is Naraku’s father.”

“No. That was the cover story
that we used to avoid scandal. Miso is Naraku’s birth
mother,” Gorai said.

The windows blew in, followed
by hooks and ropes. The palace has been breached.

oOoOoOo

Running to his rooms,
Sesshoumaru made haste in retrieving his sword and changing into his battle
armor. He still was not able to find his mate. He didn’t have time to search
for Inuyasha to explain to him that he must depart. He had to leave
immediately.

Hearing the door slide open and
closed, Sesshoumaru didn’t stop in dressing himself.

“Sesshoumaru, what’s going on?”
Inuyasha inquired.

“Father-Uncle Gorai is under attack. His messenger was barely alive when
he delivered uncle’s letter. The humans that live on his land,
started a war and uncle is being overwhelmed and with Naraku
here and Miso protecting Emi—I’m afraid that ojisan
will not make it—not without help,” Sesshoumaru answered.

“You mean you’re going,” Inuyasha
fretted, unconsciously placing a hand on his stomach.

Spying the motion, Sesshoumaru
turned fully to give his mate his undivided attention. “What is it, Inuyasha?”

“No, nothing. How long do you think that you
will be gone?”

“I don’t know. Since we are
fighting against humans, it may take a day or two. A week at the most to help
put things back in order,” Sesshoumaru said, sheathing his sword at his hip.
“Are you sure there is nothing you would like to tell me, Inuyasha?”

The young hanyou, warred with himself
about if he should tell Sesshoumaru. This was not something that was to be told
in passing and this was definitely not something that Inuyasha wanted to say to
his mate going off to war. He didn’t want Sesshoumaru distracted, which would
possible led to him getting hurt, or worse, refusing to go aid their uncle.

Losing all train of thought,
Inuyasha found himself swept up into his mate’s loving embrace. Shyly wrapping
his arms around Sesshoumaru’s neck, Inuyasha gazed into amber colored orbs. This
was his one chance…

“Sesshy,
please be safe and come back to Rin and I,” Inuyasha
said with glittering eyes. It was hard for him to maintain his composer.

“Fear not, my mate, I will
return to you and Rin,” Sesshoumaru vowed, wondering
if Inuyasha was going to tell him what was going on in his head. He almost
smiled at the thought. In a million years, if they lived that long, Sesshoumaru
would never be able to figure out his mate.

Pulling away slightly, Inuyasha
guided Sesshoumaru’s hand to the barely formed bulge of his tummy. Looking back
up to into Sesshoumaru’s eyes, he saw that they widen a fraction—surprise and
uncertainty swirled within the intense depths.

“I know you better, you
stubborn bastard. You better; because I’m not cut out to raise Rin and our pup by myself.”

Speechless was something that
didn’t happen very often, if ever for Sesshoumaru, yet here he was floundering
like a fish out of water, attempting to grasp what his mate said.

For so long had he waited for
this moment, to be told by his beta that he—no, they were to be parents. Ever since that day nearly a year ago,
Sesshoumaru had come to the grim realization that the gods were punishing him
for mistreating Inuyasha all of his life and now to be rewarded his one heart’s
desire was just too much for him to accept.

Inhaling deeply, Sesshoumaru
now detected the sweet honey fragrance that lingered around his mate, one of
the signs of Inuyasha being pupped, and the other was the slight outward curve
of his mate’s belly.

Pulling Inuyasha back to him,
Sesshoumaru kissed him. His tongue traveling along the seam of closed lips
until Inuyasha parted them. Sucking in his mate’s tongue, Inuyasha fondled it
with his own, moaning in absolute pleasure.

Alas their intimate moment was
broken when their father appeared.

“Sesshoumaru, we must go,” Toga
said, sad that he had to separate his sons from each other.

Not saying another word,
Sesshoumaru place one more kiss to Inuyasha’s brow. Inuyasha for his part
didn’t want his mate to leave but it was his duty as the Western heir’s Consort
to stand strong in the face of adversity and to be a good example to Rin.

Inuyasha along with his mother,
Shizuka, grandparents, and believe it or not, Izumi,
with his younger half-brother, stood watching with heavy hearts and saddened
eyes as Toga, Sesshoumaru, and Takemaru departed for
the Southern Lands—unknown of the danger approaching.

oOoOoOo

Peering from the bushes near
the palace, the men had an exceptional view of the master chamber. Everything
was going to plan. Their men were just going inside to retrieve the lord’s mate
and use her as a bargaining chip to gain the land that was owed to them. Their
people toiled far too long to not to have what should be rightfully theirs.

“Why is it taking so long?” one
man whined.

“Shh!
Will you be quiet!” another man hissed, not wanting to give away their
position.

The ground around them
trembled. One of the other men fell over on his side.

Looking at each other, they
couldn’t figure out what was happening, and then they saw it, huge and white.
But it wasn’t just one; there were three gigantic dogs with the middle hound
towering over the two flanking its’ sides, leading an army of white canines.

In the distance, the men heard
the screams of their comrades—this rebellion was over—but there was still a
chance if they could get Lord Gorai’s mate, the tide
could turn in their favor.

However, their hopes were
dashed to bits when all of the enormous canines transformed to their humanoid
forms. The taller of the three raised his sword into
the air above his head, twirling it in a controlled circle. Wisps of
reddish-gray smoke spread upward as a shadow of a dragon snaked into the funnel
of the darkening sky before a crimson sphere appeared in its’ place.

Turning to the army, he said,
“Stand down or be annihilated.”

“We will not give up what is
rightfully ours!” the leader said, coming from behind his cover.

“Then you leave me no other
choice,” Toga replied and unleashed his attack. “DRAGON
TWISTER!!!”

The cyclonic tempest cut a
deep, long meandering path into the open grassy land of the Northern territory,
not sparing anything from harm if unlucky enough to get in its’ way. The humans
not caught in the violent rotating windstorm all fell to their knees in
surrender.

“Noo!”

Sesshoumaru ran into the palace
toward the frightful scream. It was his aunt. Keeping pace with him was his
other uncle.

As soon as they entered the
room, chaos reigned. Not bothering to ask any questions both attacked the
humans without remorse.

After the insurgents were dealt
with the only sound that could be heard was Emi, crying in absolute despair.

oOoOoOo

Two weeks had passed since
Sesshoumaru and Toga had left with Takemaru and a
small squad of troops. Inuyasha had not heard anything and worrying himself
endlessly.

Many times his mother tried to
get him to either sit down in order not to stress out or to come join her and
his grandmother.

Within that time, Inuyasha’s
grandfather, Takehiko, had taken over the affairs of
the West—owning to the fact that Inuyasha wouldn’t be able to such
responsibilities in his present condition, the strain would be too much of a
burden on him and would cause him to miscarry; and that was something Takehiko wanted to avoid at all costs.

It was during this time that
they received an unexpected visitor.

oOoOoOo

“Man, I’m tired,” Inuyasha
complained to no one but himself after putting Rin to
bed.

His mother set-up rooms for Rin next to his old rooms where he could be near her just
in case she had a bad dream or something that went bump in the night. So far, Rin would come into his room, waking him up or to simply
wanting to cuddle for comfort.

Normally, Inuyasha would just
relax in a tub of soothing water in his room, but tonight he wanted to
replenish his drained body with the healing qualities of the hot springs.
Gathering all what he needed, Inuyasha ventured just outside his room to the
enclosed private spring of his and Sesshoumaru’s room.

The sun had already set and
Inuyasha had previously lit the torches around the shimmering pool as well as
lighting scented candles to keep unwanted flies and other winged pests away.

Within minutes, Inuyasha was
fast asleep.

Walking into the quiet room,
Kaori smiled as she hatefully gazed upon her sleeping cousin. The sleeping
draught did its job—as it should. She should be rid of Inuyasha tonight. All
she needed to do now was wait to hear from her contact.

On silent feet, Kaori went to
the side wall to open the gate. She found the hidden entrance while walking the
ground earlier in the year and realized that it led into Sesshoumaru’s private
bath. At the time though, she wasn’t quite sure what she would do with the
information, but now…

This was the perfect
opportunity to be rid of her wretched cousin—forever a shame to the Shiro Inu Clan–– a mongrel who
had no business being mated to a purebred; that was her right.

oOoOoOo

It was rare for Takehiko and his mate to enjoy a peaceful evening alone.
Ever since their son and grand-heir departed over two weeks ago to assist their
second son, Gorai, this was the first time in ages
that he wasn’t bombarded with political issues of the Inu
clans or lesser squabbles of his vassals.

Tonight Takehiko
sat behind Taisho’s desk, going over an inventory request from the kitchen
staff to begin preparations for the adoption ceremony feast for Sesshoumaru and
Inuyasha’s daughter, Rin. The servants and guards
alike adored the little human child.

They found it especially
endearing to watch her follow Lord Sesshoumaru or Master Inuyasha around after
her studies. The chef always made sure that she had plenty of food on her
plate, owing to the fact that Rin couldn’t eat youkai
cuisine as well as some type of sugary treat right before bedtime.

Smiling in thought, Takehiko briefly closed his eyes, stretching out his
sensing to make sure that all was well around the palace.

Jumping up quickly, he made his
way to the door with Tsukiko on his heels.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“There’s an intruder on the
grounds, near Inu’s chambers,” he replied as he
rounded a corner, grabbing hold of his sword.

The guards patrolling the east
side of the family wing saw them and ran toward them. As the group approached
Inuyasha’s room, the shoji slid open.

Kaori stumbled out her right
arm bleeding, hanging limply at her side. She also had several deep gashes on
her face and neck, which were bleeding before collapsing in her grandmother’s
arms.

Takehiko cautiously ventured inside Inu’s room. Wide disbelieving eyes surveyed the damage to
the outside private hot spring. A trail of blood was smeared along the wall as
well as a splatter of it decorated another side with the unmoving body that was
cut-up beyond repair.

He saw similar markings on
Kaori. Gritting his teeth in anger, Takehiko marched
right back to the sitting area of his grand-heir’s room.

“Wake her up!”

“Takehiko, please. She’s been through enough without you questioning
her,” Tsukiko said.

“I don’t give a damn what she’s
been through! Obviously, there was a reason for Inuyasha to attack her. He
could have killed her, but he didn’t and I want to know why. Now, wake her up!”
Takehiko demanded.

Needing to know the answer as
well, Tsukiko did as her mate requested and proceeded
to rouse their unconscious grand-heir.

Kaori stirred from being prodded.
Her vision blurred briefly until her grandparents faces came into view. Sitting
up warily, Kaori looked around her surroundings confused to where she was
located.

“You are in Lord Sesshoumaru’s
chambers, my dear,” Tsukiko answered her unspoken
question.

Getting right down to business,
Takehiko wasted no time, “Where is Inuyasha?”

“I don’t know. I was on my
nightly walk when I heard some noise, which led me to here and by the time I
came in he was already gone. I went outside to
investigate when the assassin attacked me. I fought him as best as I could. He
over powered me

“Stop, Kaori. No more lies! The
assassin didn’t attack you, Inuyasha did. The crescent marks around the spring
and on the body of said assassin and upon your person was made by no other than
Inuyasha,” Takehiko accused.

“Grandfather, I know not what
you speak of,” Kaori replied. “Inuyasha did no such thing as I said, he was
already gone.”

Tsukiko knew what was coming next; she
could feel the heat from her mate’s anger radiate off him in wave. “Kaori, now is not the time to lie about something as serious
as this. Takehiko knows that Inuyasha attacked you
and the assassin, so if you value what little pride you have left, I suggest
that you be forthcoming with the truth.

Long seconds ticked by which
one fueled Takehiko’s ire further, he dug his claws
into the palm of his hand. Blood pouring freely as he clinched his fists
tighter and attacked.

“Blades of
Blood!”

A/N: Well, tell what you think.
Will Kaori get away from her grandfather? What happened to Emi and why is she
crying. I don’t know about any of you but Toga was awesome! Does anyone know
what happened to Inuyasha? Don’t know? Well, stay tuned for the next chapter
