Chapter 22
Disclaimer: The great Inu clan I own not. Nor of the Higurashi’s, any monks or demon slayers or even priestesses. The Feudal Era has its own history. These people you are about to see are twisted into my own little fantasy, no longer the originals. Therefore, they belong to no one but themselves and the world they live in. (And of course, the original creator, RT)

I apologize for the so late delay. As most of you know by now, I have a new job! It’s working out great, alas it is also why my nights have become much shorter, and why no chapters have come forth. Things are progressing, albeit slowly. Very very slowly.
This is still a Sesshy and Kags story, but it does involve other people around them that they love. I guess it’s kind of turned into a mini soap opera. You get all these little caches of other things that are happening (hopefully at the same time), until everyone comes together in a big event.
Also, one other note. I know I know, you’re saying let me get on with the story! I must say this…I intended on making Inuyasha and Kikyo suffer for their wrongdoings against the poor Kagome…grrrr…but I couldn’t. They have to have a happy ending. ~Shrugs shoulders~ That’s just the way its going to be kids. I apologize to anyone who wanted me to do a little bashing.
So…on with the faerie tale of my dreams…
***********************************************
Oh, and on a side note, yes I know Kikyo’s followers are called Soul Collectors, but I deemed it more fantasy like if I were to call them Soul Dragons. They do look like them ya know.
I know, I know…get to the story at hand.
***********************************************
Inuyasha stood at the edge of the forest, leaning with a hand carefully placed upon a nearby tree staring at Kaede’s hut. If he had wanted, he could catch flies as far agape as his mouth was. For before him were Kikyo’s soul dragons. Two swirled slowly, aimlessly around the little place he sometimes called home, as if they were waiting for something. Or someone. A few others from the group were closer to him, and when they flew too close to him, he shivered. Not in fright, but with the cold they unknowingly seemed to drag behind them.
Emotions flooded through him unbidden. Anger for how she last treated him. Distaste for what she was and what she had to do to survive. Hope, for her peaceful release, and finally, love. Because he had loved her before, and he has ever since. Kagome was great, but…
He had done her wrong.
On many occasions. At some point during their journey to kill Naraku, he had finally discovered that his heart truly belonged to Kikyo. Ever since they first met, he knew he would follow her to the ends of the earth.
Having been stuck in his human form since Kagome’s capture by his brother, he was free to feel these emotions, whether he liked it or not. He had also realized just what he had been doing to Kagome all this time. She looked so much like his beloved Kikyo, that it sometimes escaped his mind that she wasn’t her. Before he knew it, a warm single tear of shame took shape and ran down his cheek. His fingers touched it before it came all the way down.
“Kagome, I have made you cry so many of these tears. I am the cause of your pain and suffering. For that I am sorry. Please forgive me.” The wind took his whispered words and carried them away.
The hanyou that stood at the edge of the forest took in a deep breath and made his way to the earthen hut that contained his love, and hopefully another who would have some answers.
***********************************************
In the hut…
***********************************************
Kikyo sighed heavily as if she had the weight of the world upon her shoulders. Kaede placed her worn gentle hands upon them and looked into her sister’s face with the one good eye she had left.
“Dear sister, I believe everything will come out right in the end. All will be well.”
The sightless socket under her eye patch sensed Inuyasha’s arrival. Naraku may have taken away her ability to see perfectly, but he left behind something else. She thought it to be evil in the beginning since it was from him, but has learned in her younger years with wisdom beyond to embrace the evil gift he left.
“Aye, here comes the man ye heart seeks dear one. I shall take my leave.”
She gave her sisters shoulders a quick squeeze before slipping through the flap of the door. She looked into Inuyasha’s eyes and gave a knowing smile before heading off to the river.
“Inuyasha, I shall be back soon. Use ye words wisely and place them gently upon the ears of mine occupant inside. She has a healing heart. It would be most sensible if ye would help it along.”
The old woman didn’t stop once while she spoke. By the time she was finished, she was out of sight. If Inuyasha hadn’t seen it with his own eyes, he would have thought a ghost was speaking to him.
The man with black as midnight tresses merely shook his head. That old woman sure was weird sometimes.
The smell of Kaede’s cooking hit his nose first as his eyes adjusted to the dim lighting inside the hut. Grandma sure knew how to make a great stew.
Kikyo sat with her back to him, stirring the contents of the black kettle. She chuckled to herself when she heard Inuyasha’s stomach grumble.
“Would you like something to eat Inuyasha?” she asked.
“Yeah, I guess so.” The hanyou sat down in his usual spot.
Kikyo moved the hot kettle from the fire to a place in the middle of a small table and dipped a large spoon inside, giving its contents a last stirring. Inuyasha gave an appreciative sniff as the steam poured off.
“It smells great.” He spoke quietly, almost as if he were afraid he would scare away the woman before him.
She gave him a brief look as she lifted the spoon with bits of meat, potatoes and other vegetables from here sisters garden, then dipped it into a bowl and handed it over to the hanyou. He gingerly took the small earthen pot from her and held it both hands as if it were something very precious. Small swirls of heat lifted up into the air.
The dead miko then spooned herself a very small portion.
Inuyasha raised an eyebrow.
“I thought you didn’t eat.”
Kikyo spoke without once looking up from her bowl of stew.
“I never said I couldn’t eat Inuyasha, you just assumed such nonsense.” She paused. “I do need human food from time to time, yet I can sustain myself without it for a while.”
They ate in silence for what seemed like forever.
“Kikyo…”
“Inuyasha…”
Laughter was heard coming from the hut as Kaede headed back. Things were going to be better from now on indeed. She only hoped that Kagome was faring well these days. Sesshoumaru’s ball was soon, and she prayed Kagome knew the whole truth about herself before things went bad for them. Thankfully Miroku and Sango were there to help her. Well…at least Sango was.
***********************************************
Kagome beamed at the kimono that lay before her. She was still dripping wet from her luxurious bath. It must have been made of the finest silk on hand. Sesshoumaru had definitely outdone himself. This made her pause for thought. The man, err, demon had given in to her every request she asked of him. Which usually meant one of two things. One, his ice cold heart was beginning to melt faster than she thought, or two, he needed something from her. Knowing the taiyoukai, it was probably the latter.
She sighed to herself as she delicately fingered the fabric. It felt so yummy. It took her a while to figure out just what exactly to wear that would do a good enough job of acting as camouflage for her wings. White just seemed to be the perfect choice. It would change colors easily as her mood changed and no one would be the wiser. She hoped. These were demon lords they were dealing with after all. Hopefully, since there would be so many people there, they would simply think that she changed gowns.
Of course, she also hoped that there would be no reason for her kimono to change colors. Suddenly, she felt a warm tingling sensation all over her body. It was just like that feeling you’d get when a body part fell asleep.
‘Sesshoumaru must be coming.’
Although she thought it strange in the beginning, she was getting used to “feeling” Sesshoumaru everywhere. She merely chalked it up to their recent bonding and her breaking through his cold exterior.
A soft knock at her door broke her from her reverie. She left the bed and went to the door. When she opened it, the man that stood there quite literally took her breath away. For there stood Lord Sesshoumaru himself, as if summoned by her thoughts. Of course, it certainly didn’t take her long to become agitated. She was in a bathrobe with a towel wrapped around her hair after all.
“Sesshoumaru! What do you want?!” she demanded.
He tried to hide the quirk of a smile. She was so cute when he rattled her cage. She stood before him in a fluffy pink bathrobe and a towel wrapped around her gorgeous hair. Her wings just barely peeked out from the bottom of the robe, and they appeared to still be a bit dripping wet. It didn’t take him long to wonder what else was wet, or that he could make wet…and dripping. All thought was lost merely at the sight of her.
“Well, what is it?”
He managed to mumble something before he took off in the direction of the baths. Damn that faerie. One little thought of her made him harder than stone. He was going to definitely turn on the icy coolness that was his persona tonight. He couldn’t let the others see him like this. He had grown soft over these past few weeks, but tonight, tonight she wasn’t going to like him one bit. He growled at thought of acting this way towards her. But it had to be done, and if she hated his guts in the morning so be it. This was business, and business just doesn’t mix well with pleasure. Most times.
He continued into the baths, he needed a good soaking before he had to deal with everyone and everything tonight.
Kagome peeked out the door as the taiyoukai stormed off.
‘What’s his problem?’
She “admired” his trunk as he walked away and smiled a little.
‘I guess I really do like him more than a friend.’ She thought with a sigh, and went back into her room to finish preparing herself.
***********************************************
Jaken greeted each guest as they arrived. Everyone that had been invited seemed to be here. Of course, the rumors of there being a real live faerie back in the lands had spread like wildfire. This was something dangerous. If faeries were bound and betrothed to demons, they could curse or bless the family line. The family could only be cursed if the faerie were taken against their will and forced upon. The demon and their faerie would live merely another 100 years before they both died. No matter how powerful the demon may be, and regardless of how long they have lived. The family would be blessed if the demon and faerie had fallen in love during their period of betrothal. Therefore, the demon and faerie would live forever. Thus is the twisted fate of a faerie.
Knowing this, Jaken had mixed feelings about the girl that Lord Sesshoumaru took as prisoner. She was kind to him, yet she flitted about the castle as if she wasn’t even a prisoner at all. She must have put a spell on his master to let her do such things. This is not how prisoners acted. She should be down in the dungeons below. It angered him, yet he could plainly see that his Lord and master was becoming dare he say it? Happy?
The little toad demon was lost in thought until he felt the aura of the Eastern Lord coming in the entryway. He bowed deeply to the demon before him.
“Good afternoon Lord Bi’an and Lady Y’ssendai. I hope you find everything to your liking. One of our servants will show you to the ballroom where everyone is gathering.”
“Thank you sir Jaken,” boomed the great man. His wife bent to pat Jaken on the head.
“Thank you sir Jaken, you are most kind.”
Jaken’s cheeks turned pink, and he became flustered.
The Eastern Lord chuckled to himself.
“Come Y’ssendai, let us go.”
“Yes, my dear.” The Lady smiled.
Jaken harrumphed as the two walked away with Lunari leading them to their room. Just because his kind was related to theirs didn’t mean that gave Y’ssendai the right to touch him, let alone petting his head!
Lord Bi’an and Lady Y’ssendai are dragons that can take human form. A little mischievous, yet playful and teasing at times. Much like faeries in many ways, yet they can take the form of a dragon and breathe fire.
Lord Bi’an was tall and willowy, as is his mate. His moustache curled down past his shoulders, and his hair was a coal blue that shimmered as if alive. His eyes were much more slanted and were the color of deep dark emeralds. When he walked, he had the air of noble blood although he married into Y’ssendai’s dragon clan. She was the authority; he was the voice, since the female nobles had none. She was the meanest, baddest dragon among them when they were among the dragon public, but when they were alone, she was a perfect angel. One who did pleasurably erotic things to him.
Lady Y’ssendai wasn’t quite as tall as her mate, and all her movements were graceful as if she were a cat. She had hair that enchanted the moon itself with its silvery lavender radiance. Her eyes were an ethereal shade of blue. The most beautiful thing of all was that she was very much with child. About six months along to be exact. Her laughter was as contagious as the sunlight itself, and it always brought a smile to her mate’s eyes.
Lord Bi’an and Lady Y’ssendai made the perfect couple in everyone’s eyes. Well, as far as the dragon clan was concerned.
Lunari led the two to their guest bedroom, placing a few bags of their luggage on the bed, then bowed lowly before them.
“I hope your stay is a pleasant one your lord and ladyship. If there is ever a need for anything, please do not hesitate to ask.”
“Thank you. You may leave now.”
“Yes my Lord.” Lunari continued to bow as she made her way out.
“Lord Sesshoumaru has a most impressive palace.”
“Yes, he does. But it’s nothing compared to ours.”
“Y’ssendai, come now. Our clan has been around much longer than his. Of course we have much more than he. That doesn’t mean we should flaunt it.”
Y’ssendai smiled. “Of course, you’re right. I’m sorry my love. Are you still lagging from our long journey?”
Bi’an rubbed his brow. “I’m afraid so, but I have the most suspicious feeling you are about to remedy that.”
Y’ss dropped her robes. “Sweetheart, how did you know?” A wicked smile spread across her lips.
***********************************************
Jaken waited at the entryway for the other guests to arrive. He was once again lost in thought about little Rin when the second in command for the Southern Lord snuck behind him.
Kenori leaned down beside Jaken’s ear and whispered lightly enough to tickle the little toad’s hairs.
“Boo.”
If poor little Jaken could have jumped out of his skin, he would have. Kenori tried poorly at stifling his laughter.
“Curse you cat! How dare you sneak up on me?!”
The panther demon that stood behind him had shoulder length black hair, and eyes that sparkled like topaz. His body was built for powerful moving, and he had reflexes, like, well, a cat. The man still mourned over the loss of his Lord, Lady and their daughter, so he still wore the traditional black clothing.
“Oh come now Master Jaken. It was all in fun. I meant no harm. I’ll go to my room like a good little pussy. Now, where is that delightful Lunari you keep stashed away, hmm?”
Before the little one before him could answer, a laughing voice called to him.
“I am here Sir Kenori. How was your journey? I trust it was uneventful?” She bowed before him then took his arm to guide him to his guest chambers.
“As always. I trust you are doing well here? You know your family worries about you here with this crazy man?”
“Hai, grandfather. I am fine, and before you ask, Lord Sesshoumaru treats me well, as if I wasn’t a half breed. Unlike his unlucky baby brother.”
“Eh, I don’t want you calling yourself that, understood? You are a full blooded demon. You are merely two different breeds. There is a difference you know.”
“I fully understand grandfather. Now, here is your room. Don’t hesitate to ask for anything.”
Kenori turned the girl around in his arms and placed a sweet kiss upon her forehead.
“Ah my dear girl, you are my favorite grandchild.”
“I’m your only grandchild.” She laughed as she walked back to the front door of the palace.
“I love you.”
“I love you too, grandfather.”
Kenori sat on the edge of his luxurious bed and sighed. If only his Lord and Lady were here instead of him. No one knew what had happened to them those many years ago. Their daughter had disappeared as well. Hopefully Lord Sesshoumaru could shed some light on these matters now that he had been back home for quite some time. Rumor had it that he was taken with a human girl. Kenori laughed to himself. That would certainly be a sight to see. Lord Sesshoumaru, with a human, better yet, in love with a human.
Oh this was going to be quite an evening indeed.
