Chapter 22. Month 6... Birth (The Plan Unleashed) Part 2

The storm above swirled dangerously, bringing with it the ominous winds of death. Human flesh was rotting on the ground, bones broken and skin dangling grotesquely from the dusty calcium. The clatter of armour and crunching bones descended upon the earth as one of the many dead gave way under the heavy weight of the old and rusting armory it wore.

Lightening forked across the sky, the heavy stratus and cumulonimbus clouds blanketed with sheets of thunder and the heavy roll that followed. The sky was illuminated in a blue glow that caught the rusting armour and dark crevasses. Hisses and snarls were drowned by another strike of heavy lightening and many eyes flashed from the explosion.

The rain pounded the ground mercilessly, splattering the dirt and clumping it together. The trees sagged under the weight of the rain, hail clattering down on the branches and leaves. The grass swayed and hissed, moving to and fro in the swirling and tremulous winds. Darkness descended as the lightening died, only to be illuminated by another crack and roll of the growing storm.

“You ready?”

The young miko, her face contorted with a dark frown, turned to her counterpart and stared her straight in the eyes. Rain pelted them both, their hair sagging and hanging heavily. She nodded and turned back to look over the misted valley below, the gaunt stallion below her tossing it’s flesh and bone head. The demon horse stretched it’s large, leathery wings and shook them in the rain, curling them back to it’s body, it’s counterpart doing the same.

“How much longer are we going to have to wait?” asked the miko, glaring at the valley ahead.

“Lord Naraku should be sending up the signal soon,” said her slayer friend.

“Good.”

The rain thrashed and blew and thrashed again, cutting the grass and making the dirt explode on contact. A swirl of dark purple mist rolled across the valley below; with it a hoard of serpent and centipede demons. The pair watched them across the valley, their demon horses tossing their boney heads and stretching their massive wings.

“Do you think he’ll be able to do the job?” said the slayer.

“Oh, he’ll do his job,” said the miko in return, turning to look at her friend again. “He’ll do it or die by my arrow.”

“Let’s hope he doesn’t go crawling back to his bastard of a Lord,” the slayer said in an undertone.

“He wont,” her friend snapped. “I have it made sure of.”

“Thought of everything, have you,” said the slayer.

“Yes, I have,” said the miko.

*~*~*

“Push, InuYasha, push,” Kaede instructed frantically.

“I can’t... it hurts to much,” InuYasha cried, screaming hoarsely. “I can’t do it any more.”

“Ye must push, InuYasha,” Kaede said briskly.

Tears were streaming down his face like a flow of a river. The contractions of the second pup had begun five minutes after the last and he wasn’t prepared for it. The pain had erupted like a spark of flame, flaring up and exploding through him. His body seemed to seize up with pain. Now he lay their, sweat glistening on his golden skin, his body on fire, crying hoarsely, eyes blurred with pain.

He just wanted it to stop... wanted it to go away.

“PUSH, INUYASHA.”

“I CAN’T.”

Tears were rolling from his eyes like a flooding river. He couldn’t believe he could cry so much at once. His face was red and his eyes were streaked and bloodshot. He clenched the blankets and arched his back away from the bed, tossing his head into his lovers chest as he screamed again, muffling the sound through the fabric of his mates kimono. He pushed as hard as he could, but it was to painful that he collapsed within seconds, heaving for breath.

Kaede’s hands and lower arms were coated in a shining coat of blood and discharge, the crimson fluid flowing so freely it looked like the hanyou had lost more than his fair share of blood that he craved to survive. He was panting heavily, holding his mate and whimpering incoherently. Kaede gripped the next pups head and looked up at the hanyou, seeing him watching his mate with pleading eyes.

“The next is almost out, InuYasha,” Kaede whispered hopefully. “Ye must push one last time.”

Almost like pressing a button, he screamed again, tears shedding from his eyes thickly and arched from the bed. His bottom lip was bleeding and swollen from biting it so many times while pushing and this time was no different. He pushed as hard as his weakened body could push, his voice thick and raspy as he felt the second of the four slide from his body painfully.

He fell limp into his lovers arms, whimpering and holding him as if life was slipping away from him. Their lips touched softly, and he whimpered again.

“Ahh, there,” Kaede whispered.

She wrapped the smaller bundle in a blanket and placed it in a small wooden crib that had been made many months before hand. He rested beside his brother, eyes tightly closed and shivering, hiccoughing and whimpering. InuYasha opened one eye first, and then the other, and focused on the two small bundles, smiling weakly and tiredly.

Almost like a hot torch, pain seared through his body again, and he arched, his scream dead in his throat as he clenched the sheets and pushed, the next one coming far sooner than the last had. Kaede leant forward with shock and wiped away the thick blotches of blood. Many stains of dark wine red or black now adorned the sheets below the hanyou’s body, more blood pooling on the already bloodied material.

“Ye can do this, InuYasha,” Kaede said, her eyes frantic as she watched the half demon slump against his mate and look at her with weak eyes.

“No more... I c-can’t,” he whispered weakly, his voice almost gone.

“Please, InuYasha,” Kaede pleaded.

“No more,” he whispered, eyes closing.

“InuYasha.”

His eyes snapped open and he looked up. Above him, Sesshomaru was staring down at him with his always calm golden eyes. He stroked his brothers sweaty hair and glistening forehead soothingly. He breathed slow and even, watching his mate pant and cry with pain. InuYasha whimpered up at him and buried his face into Sesshomaru’s white kimono.

“I can’t... It’s to m-much,” InuYasha whispered, shuddering with sobs.

Sesshomaru petted his brother softly, watching the tears flow so freely. He could feel the pain and agony radiating from his brother and wasn’t very much liking it. He frowned deeply about it and looked over at Kaede, his eyes cold and aggravated with her. She should have known of the pain and made an antidote or cream to help stave the feeling.

“S-S-Sesshomaru,” InuYasha whispered hoarsely.

He looked back down, eyes as calm as ever. Staring up at him, were the most fear-filled golden eyes he had ever seen. Blood-shot and puffy, his brother looked weaker than he had ever; when they had been enemies and when they had become lovers. It pained him to see his mate in such a state, but that was something he could not help. All he could do was sit and keep his young brother as calm as he could.

“Push, little brother,” Sesshomaru whispered.

InuYasha whimpered. He took a breath, trying to calm the pain, the heat, the agony, and arched. His back lifted from the bed once again, his eyes shot shut and he screamed, his voice nothing but a pained hollow gasp as he pushed with everything he had. His head was spinning now, blood rushing to his brain and out of his body. He felt like he was being torn in half.

With a last grunting push, he fell limp again, panting heavily and sweating beyond what he had been. He could feel the blood between his legs, the bile that was spilling from him. He was stretching and being shred from the inside, his life ripping before him. With a heavy breath, InuYasha let his head roll to the side and closed his eyes as the momentary break in his painful pushing was sated.

If he got through this one... he would never survive the last....

*~*~*

Miroku pushed aside a branch, his head low and his eyes fogged with tears. He didn’t know what he did or why he did it, but Kouga was being silent and colder than he had ever seen the wolf lord. His heart hammered in his chest as they neared the village in which InuYasha was right now giving birth in. It was eerily silent. Even the rain pounding the grass and the loud claps of thunder and forks of lightening were deafened as they walked.

“Blood,” whispered the wolf healer.

Miroku looked up for the first time in a long time, stopping just short of running into Kouga’s broad back. He shied away from the wolf lord and looked at the stumpy healer, her narrow eyes staring ahead in the direction of the village. She had a fowl look on her face and walked faster, hr wooden walking stick thumping dully on the ground.

“Come, he is in much danger,” she said in her raspy voice.

Kouga followed at a broad pace, taking a quick, unnoticeable, glance in Miroku’s direction. His head tugged when he saw the broken eyes and sad face. He wanted to pull him into his arms and warm him; to kiss his forehead and say he was sorry for being gone so long. But he couldn’t, not after what the healer had warned him when he had walked in on her.

‘The monk has tainted your blood, Kouga of the wolf demon tribe. You will mate with a female, or be shunned by your comrades... choose: the monk, or your tribe...’

The words still echoed more loudly than that of the thunder overhead. A long sheet spread across the sky, illuminating the dark swirling mass. He looked up at it, rain sprinkling his face. He could still feel Miroku’s hands in his hair when he had pulled it free of it’s bind and allowed it to cascade down his body. His hair was never touched by anyone... unless it was someone he loved.

He loved the monk, he could not deny himself what he felt.

They were mates now. Miroku was marked... but marks fade, don’t they?

“There.”

Kouga looked up and this time, Miroku did run into him. They stumbled, but Kouga caught himself and Miroku. He unconsciously pulled Miroku into his arms and looked down. He saw a vague glance of the elder healer and immediately released the monk, turning away with a thumping heart as he saw those eyes flash with such pain.

The healer was pointing her long crooked walking stick in the direction of the far end of the village. The smell of blood was fresh and wafting thickly in their direction. Kouga scrunched his noise disgustedly, taking a step back.

“We must hurry.”

*~*~*

“PUSH, INUYASHA,” Kaede instructed with a rough yell.

His body pulsated with fiery pain, and the world spun. His body arched and another raspy and scratchy scream escaped his throat. Hands caught his and he squeezed them. They squeezed back and he opened his eyes by barely an inch and saw his brothers calm and determined face looking down into his own. He bit his bleeding lip, his canine tooth splitting the lip farther and the metallic taste of blood dripped into the back of this throat.

He fell limp and felt something slip from between his trembling thighs. He panted heavily, burying himself deeper into his brothers chest. His hands still being held by Sesshomaru, he felt them rise and wrap around his chest, holding him close. His brothers clawed hands clenched his and he felt lips press against one twitching dog ear. The gentle whimper of his third born pup entered his ears and he smiled weakly.

“InuYasha...”

His right ear perked.

“InuYasha, were back.”

It was Miroku. InuYasha looked over as he saw his friend enter, Kouga just behind him and a very short, hunched over wolf with narrow eyes and large black pointed ears. She had what seemed to be a permanent frowning face and sagging cheeks. Her large eyebrows rose as he stumped over to Kaede and looked over the first three pups.

“Very strong, they are,” she said in a very raspy voice. “But this last one...”

“InuYasha,” Miroku whispered.

He knelt down before the weary hanyou, brushing back a long white strand of hair. His eyes were stinging from the cold wind and his cheeks were red. Kouga stood behind him, looking over the scene. InuYasha was glad for the white sheet covering his stomach and lower to his knees; he didn’t want Kouga and Miroku to see what he looked like from the chest down.

“Guys,” he said in a raspy voice.

“Hmm,” said the wolf healer.

“Ye came, I am grateful,” Kaede said with a shallow sigh. “This is the longest break we have had between contractions.”

“Not feeling to good, InuYasha,” said Miroku in a sad whisper.

“I’m fine, don’t worry,” he said roughly, his throat dry and sore.

“Do you sense it?”

InuYasha looked up at Sesshomaru and noticed him staring at Kouga with those same cool eyes. The wolf Lord nodded his head, frowning deeply as his left ear twitched and he looked around the hut and out into the hallway to the narrow doorway.

“Something approaches,” Kouga said in a whisper.

Miroku looked around at him.

“Who?” he asked softly.

Kouga looked at him and his blue eyes softened at just seeing the monks face. He glimpsed the healer and noticed her dark eyes. He paid them no attention and neared Miroku and knelt down. His hand cupped one soft cheek and their eyes met.

“Stay with InuYasha,” he whispered.

Sesshomaru removed himself from behind InuYasha, his mate whimpering in turn and his eyes watering more. Sesshomaru looked down at InuYasha, his eyes weak and barely able to stay open. He swooped down and gently brushed his lips over soft pink ones, feeling them tremble. He kissed his mate softly and looked InuYasha deep within the eyes.

“Never give up, little brother,” he whispered, kissing him once more.

He stood tall and walked swiftly from the room, Kouga at his heels. Kouga looked back at Miroku, who stood up at the edge of InuYasha’s bed. Kouga gave him a weak smile, his eyes sad and foreboding. Miroku strode toward him, feeling the eyes of the healer on him and gripped Kouga’s neck. He pulled him to look deep into his eyes before their lips met and he forced his tongue deep within the others mouth.

“Come back to me,” whispered Miroku once they parted.

Kouga, flushed, nodded and turned from the room with a smile of delight and happiness etched on his face. The mood was little lived as InuYasha whimpered loudly and arched again, his eyes closing tightly and more fluid tears streaking down his already painfully streaked face. Miroku turned back to him and resumed Sesshomaru’s position, allowing InuYasha to grip his hands and squeeze them as he cried harshly and tossed his head back and forth.

*~*~*

“That’s the signal.”

A slash of lightening stretched the sky, illuminating the world in a heavy purple glow. It forked downward, hitting ground in the distance. Large, expansive wings of leather stretched wide, two demon horses rearing up and neighing loudly. They snorted and pawed the ground apprehensively.

“That’s the signal,” Sango said, pointing out at the sky. “Let’s go.”

“Right,” Kagome nodded.

Their horses stretched their leathery wings again and kicked off the ground, the storm blowing around them. Their large wings caught the air and they soared into the sky, legs stretched back. Sango looked over at Kagome who was glaring out at the land. She blinked knowingly at the miko and steered her horse downward.

“In and out job,” Sango yelled over the rain. “Let’s do – AHHHHH.”

Long white claws slashed the air, acid green poison splashing the air. One of her horses long leather wings was torn clean off, the demon screaming with pain. She spiraled to the ground, grasping her Hiraikotsu close. Kagome flashed below her, diving toward the earth. She steered upward and Sango dove for her horse, falling heavily on the flank and grasping the young miko around the waist.

“What was that?” Sango snapped, staring out at the misted earth.

They heard Sango’s horse crumple on the ground, looking down at the mass of mist and darkness. They heard it neighing loudly and screaming with pain; then the snarl of a beast and swish and chop of claws and the head being cut clean off. Sango looked up at Kagome, both pale and fearful. What was it below them that was attacking them?

“We should go higher,” Sango said.

“Yea,” Kagome whispered.

She forced her horse higher, it’s long leather wings beating hard in the thick downpour of rain. It snorted through it’s nose and kicked it’s legs as if running along the ground. It’s boney head stretched forward and they soared higher, moving up through a thick blanket of cloud cover and lightening shards.

A loud snarl and the fangs of a beast stretched from the clouds closing in the horses body. Sango gasped, grabbing hold of Kagome around the waist and pulling her from the horse as it was ripped in half. It’s screaming neigh was drowned by the lightening and rolls of thunder along with the squelching of blood and the body being torn in two.

They landed softly on the ground, stumbling forward on the slick mud to look around. The world was pitched into blackness and everything around them was illuminated briefly by a thrash of lightening that stretched across the dark skies. Both woman looked on into the shadows and saw two beasts, standing ahead of them, snarling and growling through the thunder.

“Leave demons or we slay you,” Sango yelled through the gales of wind.

The two demons looked at one another. They growled low at one another before the tallest of the two stalked forward a few steps and hunched down, snarling loudly and barking with a booming voice. Kagome covered her ears and glared at the greyish blue in the distance. Blood seemed to be smeared over it’s mouth, glowing red eyes standing out against the grey background.

Kagome took a step forward and pulled an arrow and her bow into position. She aimed, glaring at the beasts in the distance. They still didn’t move at her threatening advance as the cord was pulled back from the bow, aiming the arrow in it’s arch. She took aim at the large grey blurred demons heart.

A clap of lightening struck the earth just as the two beats let out booming roars and charged forward, snarling and snapping their massive jaws. The big brown bear-like one nearest that back raced ahead of the grey one, charging at Sango. She jumped backward just as the beast barreled passed Kagome, launching her Hiraikotsu.

Kagome froze no spot, stunned into a stupor briefly. She gasped when the large beast was upon her, it’s large head raised threateningly and let out a loud snarling bark to the air. A massive paw struck her around the shoulder and she sprawled across the ground, arrows everywhere. It turned it’s massive head toward her, eyes gleaming red and dangerous.

She gasped.

“You,” she hissed.

The large demon barked loudly.

“Sesshomaru,” she whispered. “BASTARD.”

She got up and ran at him, picking up her bow and an arrow from on the ground. The demon dog snarled at her, it’s lips pulled back to expose glistening bloodied teeth. It roared largely as another crash of thunder and fork of lightening spread across the ground. Somewhere in the distance the crash and snarling of Sango and her enemy echoed through the valley.

Kagome drew her arrow into it’s sling and aimed, hated burning in her eyes. She pulled back the drawstring and waited, watching Sesshomaru’s movements carefully. He didn’t move, staying positioned where he was. She felt her heart hammering in her chest and glared at him through the blur of rain and mist.

Out of nowhere, Sango’s Hiraikotsu flashed in front of Kagome’s eyes, startling her. She jumped back and watched as a large brown wolf dived in front of her, snarling loudly and snapping at the boomerang. She looked back to where Sesshomaru was and her blood ran cold.

He was gone.

She started, turning swiftly in the opposite direction and aiming into the thick darkness. She turned again, aiming to her right, and again to her left. Her brown eyes darted all across the ground, hearing Sango’s Hiraikotsu and the large wolf’s howls and snarls in the distance. She licked her lips, finding them dry even though the downpour of rain was thick and heavy. Her body shivered violently.

“Where are you,” she muttered to herself.

In the distance, eye glowing ominously dark, Sesshomaru hunched in his dog-form through the trees. He watched out of the corner of his right eye as Kouga, in his large wolf form, attacked Sango’s Hiraikotsu and sent it spiraling into the trees. She was glaring at him, both moving around one another slowly, daring the other to attack first.

Sesshomaru focused back on Kagome in the distance, swiveling around frantically, her bow raised with much danger. She looked nervous and scared, turning every which way, licking her lips and trembling on the spot. He growled low, hunching down low in the trees, waiting for the perfect moment. She turned away from him, and he hunched lower... his time was now.

Issuing a loud growl, he sprang from behind the trees, heavy paws pounding the ground, red poisonous tongue lolling from his mouth. His pupils narrowed and dilated as he widened his jowls. Kagome turned and gasped, stumbling back, the arrow in her bow springing to life. He dove, the arrow soared...

Silence... a scream...

*~*~*

InuYasha arched and screamed, gripping the sheets with every effort as his body revolted against him. His eyes hurt from crying, his body was trembling and weakened. His heart was pounding in his chest. He couldn’t go on, not anymore. It was over... he was done.

“Sesshomaru,” he whimpered, Kaede and the wolf healer leaning close to him. “Miroku, where’s Sesshomaru?”

“He’ll be back, InuYasha,” Miroku said in a weak voice, his face ashen.

“I can’t do it anymore,” InuYAsha whispered weakly. “It hurts to much... I cant do it.. I need him, Miroku... I need Sesshomaru with me... he need to know...”

He arched again and cried, tears splashing down his face and dripping onto the sheets. His legs trembled and quivered from exhaustion. His lips were cracked and his mouth was dry and cottony. Miroku looked down upon him from above, watching as his eyes flickered to half-mast and then closed, and then flickered open again.

“Stay with me, InuYasha,” Miroku said, shaking the hanyou’s shoulder. “Come on, stay with me.”

“Sesshomaru,” InuYasha whispered, closing his eyes again.

Miroku paled further, his face ghostly now as he looked up at Kaede and the healer with frantic eyes. They were muttering quickly and looking from the sweating and weakened InuYAsha to Miroku’s haunted face and then went back to their muttering. The healer leaned closer to Kaede and whispered to her, who nodded and stepped back slowly. Miroku watched with a clenched gut, wondering what was happening.

“INUYASHA.”

The hanyou was startled into wakefulness by the wolf healers loud and demanding voice.

“Stay with me and push,” the healer snapped.

He panted heavily and nodded halfheartedly, swallowing back the lump of unease in his throat. He arched again, and the pain exploded through him, hot and cold at once, burning his body in places and freezing it in others. His eyes widened in shock as his mouth gaped with a silent scream. Suddenly, he was falling, fuzziness all around him. He curled into a fetal position and shuddered, darkness swirling around him, the sway of water flowing through his body.

He felt so peaceful, so calm. He smiled and leaned into himself... arms wrapped around him. He looked up slowly meeting beautiful golden eyes. They were calm and set easily against the handsome face of his brother, long purplish makings streaked across his unblemished face. He smiled with such softness it melted InuYasha’s very soul.

“Sesshomaru,” InuYasha whispered, his voice echoing all around him.

His brother said nothing. With watchful eyes, InuYasha felt his brothers clawed fingers grip his chin and tilt it up softly. His lips began to descend, slowly and shyly. They ghosted softly, touching with such care. InuYasha felt his body mold into his mates, his head tilting to the side as their intimately shy kiss deepened to one of pure passion.

They parted, eyes lingering and soft. InuYasha looked up into his brothers golden orbs, worry etching across his face. His brother looked so.. Sad...

“Sesshomaru...”

His voice echoed around him again, and his brother leaned in, pulling him into a soft hug, his breath ghosting across his cheek shakily. InuYasha felt his heart pounding and swallowed hard, his arms wrapping – trembling – around Sesshomaru’s sleek neck and through his long silver hair. Words echoed in his ear, and his blood ran cold, eyes vaulting with tears.

“Please don’t miss me...”

His eyes flashed open, his body was shaking. He felt sated and calm. His body was aching with pain, but it was passing slowly. He watched as Kaede raised a small bundle in her arms and passed it to the hunched wolf healer. She shook her head slowly, and walked away with the small bundle. InuYasha whimpered, watching the baby and tired to scramble up and get to it.

“InuYasha,” Miroku whispered shakily.

He looked up into the monks sad eyes.

“What happened?” He whispered fearfully.

“They lost him,” Miroku whispered. “The last one didn’t make it.”

InuYasha paled and whimpered again, turning to watch as the wolf healer disappeared from the room carrying the smallest bundle in her arms, muttering something under her breath. He felt his face growing hot and a single tear slid down his left cheek.

“My baby,” InuYasha whispered.

He passed out.
