~*~Okay, first of all I'm really, really sorry for not updating for so many days. :( I've been hospitalized for two days, so I guess I'm excused. hehehe. I just finished this chappy last night and then the damned computer decided to give up on me. Grrr! So gomen once again and I hope you guys don't hate me just yet!!! LOVE YA LOTS!!! ~*~Chapter 22—Back At One~*~
Sesshomaru now travels with Inuyasha and the gang, to help find Naraku and avenge Rin’s abduction. And to see through the threats he made to the dark miko…
He told his brother about the miko seeing Kagome’s mark. And the unholy fire that sparked in her eyes as she beheld it. Inuyasha would, as expected, be worried. But Sesshomaru reassures him. He told him of the things that went on through his and Kikyou’s encounter, and that the miko would really think a hundred times before she harms him or his mate ever again.
“I told her I would kill her if she even breathed near you or your mate. It was not an empty boast. We are men of honor, and we see through every promise we make,” Sesshomaru told Inuyasha.
Fluffy’s comments, though meant to set Inuyasha’s mind at rest, only served to remind him of his own promises to Kikyou. And made him feel guilty for thinking about not fulfilling it…
“Thanks for the thought, big brother, but I cannot allow you to kill Kikyou,”
“Why not? You’re mated now; your life is with Kagome. Not to go to Hell with her,”
“I made a promise. And just like you said, we are men of honor. And I am honor bound to fulfill my promises to Kikyou. I owe her that much,” Inuyasha said in a resigned voice.
“But then you won’t have to do anything if she’s gone now, would you?” Sesshomaru inquired silkily.
And there, in his ototo’s eyes, went a conflict of emotions. Hope sparked in them until despair drowned it.
“No, Sesshomaru. That’s out of the question. I’m not going to kill her just to get out of the stupid promise I made. That’s not honorable. So thanks for the concern, but just stay out of my business,”
Inuyasha is already walking away when Sesshomaru’s voice reached him.
“You cannot lie, Inuyasha. The proof is in your eyes. You would do anything; give anything to undo whatever promise you have made to that bitch. Since you do not have the courage to go and kill the otherwise dead miko, I am giving you a simple way out,”
The hanyou turned around and faced his brother’s stoic mien.
“Yes, I would do anything and give anything just to be able to stay by Kagome’s side! I want nothing more than to live and watch as she bears my pups and be with them until they grow up and have a family of their own. But that… that will never happen for me,”
“Killing Kikyou will solve nothing. It would only prove that I am the betraying bastard she insists that I am. That will not give her peace… and neither would it give me one. Kagome told me this over and over again. She knows of what I can offer and what I can’t give her, Sesshomaru. But she still loves me and accepted me as her mate in spite of that. Hell, I think she even loves me because she thinks I’m such an honorable puppy—one that doesn’t go back on his word. And I mean to prove it—if only for my mate. And maybe in doing that, I will convince myself that I am indeed worthy enough to claim her,” Inuyasha said in a lengthy fashion.
“But will yo hap happy?”
“My happiness is not in issue here. My honor is. And besides of which, when have you ever concerned yourself with my happiness, or anyone else’s, for that matter?” Inuyasha asked his brother in an attempt to change the subject.
Sesshomaru unfolded his self from the lounging position he is at the moment.
“You’re my brother; of course, I also seek your happiness. And your mate makes you happy. I can see that, and for that fact, I am glad. You have chosen well, Inuyasha. Kagome is a strong-willed woman, and a powerful miko at that. Mark my words when I say that the time for her to prove her power will come and it will be overwhelming to watch,”
“If that’s your roundabout way of saying you approve of Kagome, then thank you… I think. And when did you become a fortune-teller huh, Fluffy? Besides, what about you? Don’t you ever think of finding a mate? Not that I can imagine a woman—or demonness for that matter— in her right mind would willingly pledge herself to you, but still…”
“Shut up, hanyou. And don’t call me Fluffy. The name’s…disgracing. As for me, I have no intention of saddling my life with a woman. It complicates things. Besides, I have Rin now,”
“Fluffy suits you, you know. That’s probably why mother chose it for your adana. Oopps, temper temper!” Inuyasha wags his finger in front of his onisan’s flaming face and glowing eyes gleefully.
Baiting Sesshomaru seems to be a hell of a lot enjoying to the hanyou’s wacky state of mind.
“And what do you mean about the girl Rin? Don’t tell me you’ve got romantic notions about her! She’s just a child, for the love of Gods!”
“I said shut up, hanyou! You’re proving to be like that hentai companion of yours. I think you’ve been sticking around too much with the houshi. What I meant is that I think of Rin as my heir now; I have no need for another. My feelings for the girl is paternal, nothing more,” Sesshomaru explains.
“So you’re going to claim her as your pup then. I wonder what the other demon lords would think. You’re going to have a war in your hands, Fluffy. I just hope I’m still here to kick some of their asses off for you. And as for the little girl, she kinda reminds me of Kagome. So I think it’s just fitting for her to be part of the family. She made you feel, after all,”
“You are still going to be here. You aren’t going into Hell until after we’ve claimed the Western Lands, is that understood? And we’ve already established that we won’t do that until after we defeat Naraku. So I suggest you find a way to let the walking dead bitch know it, or I will,” Sesshomaru commanded.
Inuyasha nodded in assent, knowing Sesshomaru now respects his wishes to leave Kikyou up to him. But he also knew that if presented with an opportunity, Sesshomaru would not hesitate to kill her.
‘I’ve got to find her first before she finds us and Sesshomaru sees her,’
“One last thing Inuyasha,” Sesshomaru calls out to him as he looks back over his shoulder at the hanyou.
“Will you protect the miko at all costs? Even at the cost of your life?”
“If you’re talking about Kikyou, then yes. That was part of my promise and my honor demands I deliver it,”
“What about at the cost of your mate’s life?”
Sesshomaru didn’t have to wait for Inuyasha’s answer. It was right there in his eyes.
The bone-chilling fury that lit his amber orbs at the mention of Kagome’s life being threatened made the demon lord nod in approval in his mind as he walked away.
‘He would not hesitate to give up the other just to make the other safe. When the time comes, he will choose again. And this time, he will choose right. I shall make certain he does,” Sesshomaru vows…

It’s nighttime, and everyone is getting ready to sleep. The group is already adjusted to the fact that a powerful ex-enemy is now traveling with them. Sesshomaru, Rin and Jaken never did camp at nights with them though. The demon lord preferred to be alone but he still stays close to Inuyasha’s camp.
As usual, Inuyasha and Kagome are sleeping together. Since Inuyasha forbade Shippou to sleep with them, he sleeps with Kirara in her demon form to keep the kitsune warm.
The taijiya and the houshi now sleep side by side each other, a sign of their now close relationship. It’s still far away for the houshi’s opinion and he manages to get slapped a bit sometimes at his attempts to get close.
Inuyasha gave in to Kagome’s pleading that they sleep in her sleeping bag. It’s a bit cramp for the both of them, but they manage. He holds her in front of him, her back to his chest and their fingers entwined at her waist. The campfire is already out and Kagome’s already sleeping when the hanyou smelled something.
‘Kikyou,’ Inuyasha thought as he embraced Kagome more tightly to him.
Kagome stirs from her deep sleep, her eyelids moving. Something is telling her to wake up and open her eyes, but she didn’t know what it was. She wants to ignore it but it won’t leave her alone. Then she felt Inuyasha’s arms tighten around her. Her eyes fluttered open at the same time. The sight that met her made her heart stop.
‘Kikyou’s soul stealers! They’re calling out to Inuyasha. Oh God,’ Kagome thought in despair as tears silently welled up from her eyes to fall. She gripped her mate’s hands in hers as she began to shake uncontrollably.
Inuyasha thought it was another bad dream. Her dreams never bothered her again after the time they first mated. Or so she said. He knew she didn’t want him to worry and maybe that’s why she never said a thing about her dreams returning. He unzipped the bag with one hand after managing to pull it out from her grasp and went back to comforting her.
“Sshh, Kagome. It’s just a dream. I’m still here, sweetheart,” Inuyasha rocks Kagome’s body with his as he places a kiss in her hair.
He didn’t want to wake her so she won’t see the soul stealers flying above them, but she’s becoming restless in her sleep, holding onto him as though he’ll disappear. He turns her around to kiss her awake and is surprised to see her eyes are open and staring at him as tears stream down her face.
He pulls her face to his chest, embracing her fully as she cried.
“Don’t cry, Kagome. Onegai. I’m still here; I won’t leave you,”
As soon as the words were out of his mouth, he knew it was a lie. They both knew it. He had to leave her. For Kikyou.
“Was it another dream?”
Kagome shook her head no, and he understood why she’s crying. The goddamn soul stealers.
“She’s calling you,” Kagome said in a muffled voice filled with anguish.
“I don’t care. I’m not leaving you,”
“No, Inuyasha. You have to do what is right. We both know this,” Kagome smiles sadly through her tears as she raises her head from his chest.
“I’m sorry for crying. I know this time would come and I’m prepared, but… damn it all, I just never thought it would be so hard to let you go,” Kagome said, her voice breaking.
“Ssshh. I’m still here, Kanai,” He continued to sooth her fears. He felt her fingers reach up to twine at his neck and take hold of the beads he wore around his neck. He was slow to react, and when it finally hit him, she’s already pulling it halfway through his head. He grabbed hold of her hand and held on.
“What are you doing!?” Inuyasha asks Kagome as she struggles to free her hand from his grasp. He can almost hear her answer and was afraid immediately.
“Setting you free,”
He closed his eyes from the pain and terror her words gave him.
“No, Kagome! Don’t dis, is, please. This is the bond I have with you; don’t take it away. Onegai. And I may have promised my life to Kikyou, but I promise this to you now: I won’t go to Hell with her until after we defeat Naraku and Sesshomaru and I have claimed my father’s lands. I won’t leave you, Kanai,” Inuyasha knew he was begging; he didn’t care.
‘Please, don’t let her do this. Make her change her mind,” He prayed fervently in his mind, praying to each and every one of the gods that exist as he awaited his mate’s response.
The beads he wore around his neck became so much more than he would ever admit. Even before she marked him, it was the symbol that he belonged to her… just as she belonged to him.
And for her to remove it now…
‘One tug, Kagome. That’s all that will take to remove the beads. He won’t be able to stop you from destroying it,’ Kagome thought in her mind as she searched her mate’s eyes. The terror she saw there made her change her mind. She also knew what it symbolized, and what they will lose if she removes it.
So she splayed her hands wide across his chest, letting go of the necklace. The relief she saw in Inuyasha’s face made her want to weep again.
“Arigato, Inuyasha-kun. But you still have to go to her,”
“No! I don’t care if she’s calling me. I laid my terms down and that’s it. I’m staying with you,” Inuyasha said stubbornly, refusing to see the logic behind her words.
“Don’t worry about me, Inuyasha. You have to go and tell her about us, about your plans. You have to explain so she can understand,”
‘I hope,’ Kagome added in her mind, knowing first hand how vicious Kikyou can be.
“I’ll be fine. I’ll wait here for you, okay?”
The hanyou reluctantly nods as he remembered Sesshomaru. He had to warn Kikyou of him.
Kagome brushes her lips to his for a chaste kiss, but he plunders her mouth with his own; sealing all the promises he made to her before letting her go.
She stands up with him for one last embrace before he disengages and walks to where Kikyou’s pets direct him to. And after one last look at his love and her smile of encouragement, faded into the night with the soul stealers.
He never saw his mate almost call out to him before she caught herself and closed her eyes, nor saw his brother standing at the middle of the clearing looking at where he was going before shifting his attention to the miko.
And he was there when her knees gave way and collapsed…
~*~Dundundundun! hehehe. What happens next? I'll give you a clue. The next one's a scene between Kikyou and Inuyasha. I'll let you draw your own conclusions. *laughs maniacally* I come back to the drama side with this one and I'm thinking of doing another songfic, this time it's for Kikyou. “So you’re going to claim her as your pup then. I wonder what the other demon lords would think. You’re going to have a war in your hands, Fluffy. I just hope I’m still here to kick some of their asses off for you. And as for the little girl, she kinda reminds me of Kagome. So I think it’s just fitting for her to be part of the family. She made you feel, after all,”
“You are still going to be here. You aren’t going into Hell until after we’ve claimed the Western Lands, is that understood? And we’ve already established that we won’t do that until after we defeat Naraku. So I suggest you find a way to let the walking dead bitch know it, or I will,” Sesshomaru commanded.
Inuyasha nodded in assent, knowing Sesshomaru now respects his wishes to leave Kikyou up to him. But he also knew that if presented with an opportunity, Sesshomaru would not hesitate to kill her.
‘I’ve got to find her first before she finds us and Sesshomaru sees her,’
“One last thing Inuyasha,” Sesshomaru calls out to him as he looks back over his shoulder at the hanyou.
“Will you protect the miko at all costs? Even at the cost of your life?”
“If you’re talking about Kikyou, then yes. That was part of my promise and my honor demands I deliver it,”
“What about at the cost of your mate’s life?”
Sesshomaru didn’t have to wait for Inuyasha’s answer. It was right there in his eyes.
The bone-chilling fury that lit his amber orbs at the mention of Kagome’s life being threatened made the demon lord nod in approval in his mind as he walked away.
‘He would not hesitate to give up the other just to make the other safe. When the time comes, he will choose again. And this time, he will choose right. I shall make certain he does,” Sesshomaru vows…

It’s nighttime, and everyone is getting ready to sleep. The group is already adjusted to the fact that a powerful ex-enemy is now traveling with them. Sesshomaru, Rin and Jaken never did camp at nights with them though. The demon lord preferred to be alone but he still stays close to Inuyasha’s camp.
As usual, Inuyasha and Kagome are sleeping together. Since Inuyasha forbade Shippou to sleep with them, he sleeps with Kirara in her demon form to keep the kitsune warm.
The taijiya and the houshi now sleep side by side each other, a sign of their now close relationship. It’s still far away for the houshi’s opinion and he manages to get slapped a bit sometimes at his attempts to get close.
Inuyasha gave in to Kagome’s pleading that they sleep in her sleeping bag. It’s a bit cramp for the both of them, but they manage. He holds her in front of him, her back to his chest and their fingers entwined at her waist. The campfire is already out and Kagome’s already sleeping when the hanyou smelled something.
‘Kikyou,’ Inuyasha thought as he embraced Kagome more tightly to him.
Kagome stirs from her deep sleep, her eyelids moving. Something is telling her to wake up and open her eyes, but she didn’t know what it was. She wants to ignore it but it won’t leave her alone. Then she felt Inuyasha’s arms tighten around her. Her eyes fluttered open at the same time. The sight that met her made her heart stop.
‘Kikyou’s soul stealers! They’re calling out to Inuyasha. Oh God,’ Kagome thought in despair as tears silently welled up from her eyes to fall. She gripped her mate’s hands in hers as she began to shake uncontrollably.
Inuyasha thought it was another bad dream. Her dreams never bothered her again after the time they first mated. Or so she said. He knew she didn’t want him to worry and maybe that’s why she never said a thing about her dreams returning. He unzipped the bag with one hand after managing to pull it out from her grasp and went back to comforting her.
“Sshh, Kagome. It’s just a dream. I’m still here, sweetheart,” Inuyasha rocks Kagome’s body with his as he places a kiss in her hair.
He didn’t want to wake her so she won’t see the soul stealers flying above them, but she’s becoming restless in her sleep, holding onto him as though he’ll disappear. He turns her around to kiss her awake and is surprised to see her eyes are open and staring at him as tears stream down her face.
He pulls her face to his chest, embracing her fully as she cried.
“Don’t cry, Kagome. Onegai. I’m still here; I won’t leave you,”
As soon as the words were out of his mouth, he knew it was a lie. They both knew it. He had to leave her. For Kikyou.
“Was it another dream?”
Kagome shook her head no, and he understood why she’s crying. The goddamn soul stealers.
“She’s calling you,” Kagome said in a muffled voice filled with anguish.
“I don’t care. I’m not leaving you,”
“No, Inuyasha. You have to do what is right. We both know this,” Kagome smiles sadly through her tears as she raises her head from his chest.
“I’m sorry for crying. I know this time would come and I’m prepared, but… damn it all, I just never thought it would be so hard to let you go,” Kagome said, her voice breaking.
“Ssshh. I’m still here, Kanai,” He continued to sooth her fears. He felt her fingers reach up to twine at his neck and take hold of the beads he wore around his neck. He was slow to react, and when it finally hit him, she’s already pulling it halfway through his head. He grabbed hold of her hand and held on.
“What are you doing!?” Inuyasha asks Kagome as she struggles to free her hand from his grasp. He can almost hear her answer and was afraid immediately.
“Setting you free,”
He closed his eyes from the pain and terror her words gave him.
“No, Kagome! Don’t dis, is, please. This is the bond I have with you; don’t take it away. Onegai. And I may have promised my life to Kikyou, but I promise this to you now: I won’t go to Hell with her until after we defeat Naraku and Sesshomaru and I have claimed my father’s lands. I won’t leave you, Kanai,” Inuyasha knew he was begging; he didn’t care.
‘Please, don’t let her do this. Make her change her mind,” He prayed fervently in his mind, praying to each and every one of the gods that exist as he awaited his mate’s response.
The beads he wore around his neck became so much more than he would ever admit. Even before she marked him, it was the symbol that he belonged to her… just as she belonged to him.
And for her to remove it now…
‘One tug, Kagome. That’s all that will take to remove the beads. He won’t be able to stop you from destroying it,’ Kagome thought in her mind as she searched her mate’s eyes. The terror she saw there made her change her mind. She also knew what it symbolized, and what they will lose if she removes it.
So she splayed her hands wide across his chest, letting go of the necklace. The relief she saw in Inuyasha’s face made her want to weep again.
“Arigato, Inuyasha-kun. But you still have to go to her,”
“No! I don’t care if she’s calling me. I laid my terms down and that’s it. I’m staying with you,” Inuyasha said stubbornly, refusing to see the logic behind her words.
“Don’t worry about me, Inuyasha. You have to go and tell her about us, about your plans. You have to explain so she can understand,”
‘I hope,’ Kagome added in her mind, knowing first hand how vicious Kikyou can be.
“I’ll be fine. I’ll wait here for you, okay?”
The hanyou reluctantly nods as he remembered Sesshomaru. He had to warn Kikyou of him.
Kagome brushes her lips to his for a chaste kiss, but he plunders her mouth with his own; sealing all the promises he made to her before letting her go.
She stands up with him for one last embrace before he disengages and walks to where Kikyou’s pets direct him to. And after one last look at his love and her smile of encouragement, faded into the night with the soul stealers.
He never saw his mate almost call out to him before she caught herself and closed her eyes, nor saw his brother standing at the middle of the clearing looking at where he was going before shifting his attention to the miko.
And he was there when her knees gave way and collapsed…
~*~Dundundundun! hehehe. What happens next? I'll give you a clue. The next one's a scene between Kikyou and Inuyasha. I'll let you draw your own conclusions. *laughs maniacally* I come back to the drama side with this one and I'm thinking of doing another songfic, this time it's for Kikyou.
