Chapter 21

I don't own anything Inuyasha.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That night after camp was made, Inuyasha left to scout ahead, and the rest were asleep, ‘Sesshoumaru’ and ‘Kagome’ once again headed deep out of earshot for their nightly conversation. For some reason, ‘Sesshoumaru’ had insisted they take the worn out backpack that once belonged to her.
‘He’ found a downed tree began riffling through the yellow bag’s contents. Annoyed at being made to wait, ‘Kagome’ was quickly losing her patience as he watched ‘himself’ scoff, huff, and click ‘his’ tongue when she couldn’t find whatever she was looking for…
DAMN HIS NOSE! ‘Sesshoumaru’ could smell the chocolate since she returned with Rin, and now that it was finally within ‘his’ reach, it was nowhere! Where… where… mine!…
When ‘Kagome’ heard a whimper reverberate from the taiyoukai he once was, ‘she’ decided something had to be done to stop it.
“Thank you.”
It worked; ‘Sesshoumaru’ stopped dead in her tracks. ‘His’ right arm seemed to be all consumed within the large pack, but ‘his’ head peaked out over the edge and looked at the aloof version of ‘herself’ through tousled silver bangs, wide, golden eyes and mouth hung open.
The image had ‘Kagome’ rolling his eyes. What everyone found so charming about the miko escaped Sesshoumaru, however…
“Thank you,” ‘she’ said again, voice steady and not giving away any emotion hiding behind the feminine tone. “For Rin.”
Guilt squeezed Kagome’s heart once again. She was sure Sesshoumaru just didn’t go around thanking people every day. Actually, she might be one of the firsts to ever hear those words pass his lips, err… ‘her’ lips… um, more like ‘heard those words from Sesshoumaru’. The display shown by Rin earlier today was being shown to her by Sesshoumaru in the form of those simple four words. He truly cared what happened to his ward.
Maybe she should tell him that Rin knew about them. Maybe he should know about their arrangement and her new ‘game’. If he is reaching out like this, then he might be able to…
Just then, ‘Sesshoumaru’ hand brushed against something in the bag. It was smooth, flimsy, and made soft, crinkling sounds as ‘he’ grabbed onto it. Looking down at the now exposed Ziploc bag, ‘he’ saw it full of candy wrappers. All of the candy wrappers. The smell had killed her all day, would probably continue to do so for weeks with ‘his’ superior senses, and with their current situation she couldn’t go home for more.
That stupid dog ate all my chocolate! Ah, the hell with him!
‘Sesshoumaru’s’ lips tightened in a dry smile and she called back as sweetly as possible. “You’re welcome, Sesshoumaru.”
Throwing the plastic bag back into the pack with more force than necessary, ‘he’ stood, towering over ‘herself’, and began to storm back to camp when ‘Kagome’ gripped his arm and flared enough reiki to cause ‘him’ pause.
“We’re not finished yet, miko.” It was unsettling how Sesshoumaru could make her own voice sound so low, smooth, and scary. Actually, it was unsettling to see how dangerous she never knew she could be.
“Hnnnn....”
'Kagome' shook his head. “No, be more apathetic.”
‘Sesshoumaru’, after a sigh, tried again. "Hnpfh.”
Now ‘Kagome’ sighed. “Not like a prepubescent pub.” ‘Her’ voice was sturdy, but soft, having given up trying to sound like himself. “Be commanding.”
“HhhHHNNn!”
Staring back at ‘himself’ as if looking at the biggest idiot alive, ‘Kagome’ scoffed, then with lowered eyes and a condescending scowl bated, "What... was that, Miko?"
With a quick snap of her head she flipped long silver locks, causing the quickly regrowing bunch to stick out more. Feeling slightly dejected, but more frustrated with her teacher, ‘Sesshoumaru’ pointed her nose slightly in the air, unintentionally mocking his normal indifference and disregarding his insult. "Hn."
‘Kagome’s’ eyes softened and judgmental tone receded, minutely. "Better."
