CHAPTER 1, PART 2 - FIRST DAY ON THE JOB

~*~ Ok, before anything else, I forgot to post some of the translations:

'Nishijima Byouin' roughly translates to 'West Island Hospital'.

'Miko' means 'priestess' (although I suppose most of you already know that ^_^)

Oh, and I'll be giving Sesshomaru and Inuyasha my very own surname 'Kojima'. It means 'small island'.

Hope you enjoy the part 2. If you have any comments, please don't forget to leave them at the reviews section. Happy reading! Jaa ne! ^_^ ~*~

Chapter 1, Part II - First Day On the Job

Her grandfather said her 'miko' powers were probably starting to awaken. To be honest, she didn't believe anything her grandpa told her (if you knew Jii-chan, you won't be asking her as to why) but being the one to experience it, she couldn't argue any more. She just had to accept that she was... unique.

After one grisly episode starring her and a 'bad to the bone' youkai who wanted to know what a miko tasted like, she discovered she had the ability to 'purify' demons. Simply put, she could turn them to dust. Literally. Her trusty bow and arrow became her primary weapon, although she could channel her powers through anything. Believe it or not, Jii-chan helped her with that. Though the old man didn't get to inherit even a drop of the so-called holy powers, his knowledge was invaluable to her.

With his aid, Kagome underwent some intense meditations and gruelling training so she could perfect her control of her abilities. She never ceased to be a target for the bad-ass demons who wanted to eat her, but they started to think twice when they noticed she was fully prepared to take them down. And so began Kagome's 'demon hunting' days.

She never really 'hunted' though. Most of the time, they came after her or she just happened to be there when they're about to harm someone else. But make no mistake, when she and even a pack of demons collide, only one thing's for certain: another youkai's gonna bite the dust.

But Kagome learned that like humans, not all demons were bad. Not all of them were dedicated to harming the human race and end at the top of the food pyramid. Some were actually kind and civilised, using their unnatural powers to help humans to enable them to coexist in harmony. In her opinion, those 'good guys' were too few and far between.

The demons use some sort of 'illusion' to enable them to appear as humans, but a miko cannot be fooled. So far, none of them has escaped Kagome's notice. Sure, they may look like humans, but their aura always betray their true nature. And it was as though she could look right through their carefully made masks, always knowing what they truly looked like in youkai form. Kagome has yet to meet a youkai who can blindside her.

Her powers and abilities continued to grow. The most prominent--and most vital, in her opinion--was the power to heal. Once, her then 8 year-old brother Souta, came home with a cat. He found it badly beaten and tortured by some kids who were into that kind of thing and rescued the cat when the kids got tired of their 'plaything'. It was barely breathing when Souta asked for her help. She tended the cat as best she could, but in her heart she knew it'll be dead by morning. Their mom told them to bring it to a veterinarian, but Souta refused, stubborn as a mule. He said he believed in his sister; she'll find a way to make sure the cat stayed alive. Kagome was highly doubtful, but she didn't have the heart to crush her brother's hope. So she agreed, keeping the cat in her room for the rest of the night.

Her prophecy proved to be true. The cat was incureable. At 2 in the morning, she could already hear it battling for its' last breath. Kagome went to the dying cat, crying as though she felt its' pain. The cat looked at her as though pleading for Kagome's help, and before she knew it, she was laying her hands on it, willing her power to course through the cat and save it. That was the last thing she remembered.

Souta went to her room to check on the cat, and to his amazement, found it alive and well beside his sister. His sister was another matter. She lay on the floor of her bedroom, unconscious. Her pallor was chalky-white and her breathing uneven as though she was fighting for every breath she took. He ran out of the room, shouting for their mom and grandpa to come at the top of his lungs. When they rushed into the scene, Mrs. Higurashi was sure her daughter was dying. She was about to call an ambulance when her father-in-law carried the cat and plopped it atop Kagome. The moment they made contact, Kagome was able to fill her hungry lungs with air that she choked on it, regaining her consciousness. She didn't know--and still didn't want to know--what might have happened if her grandpa didn't get there in time.
