Chapter Two

Disclaimer: I do not own InuYasha

Knocking at the door of her best friend's home, Kagome tried to maintain her ever-weakening composure. She had been on pins and needles ever since the news of InuYasha's infidelity finally settled in her brain.

~Flashback~

When he first broke the heart shattering news, she had fallen into a state of denial, and strangely enough, was not at all moved by his words. They went to bed like nothing ever happened and she even fell into a peaceful rest…well, at least at first, and then like the calm before the storm, by three o’clock in the morning her composure was kicked to the back burner, only to be replaced with a raging and all too raw fury. She was too angry to be heartbroken, and she had half a mind to box his face in while he slept like a baby cuddle at her side, she couldn't believe the nerve of him. How is it he could lay there sleeping as though nothing was wrong? That fact…more than anything else enraged her, but she played it cool after untangling herself from his grasp. She got on the phone with her brother quicker than you could say 'Inuyasha is a baka hanyou'. She knew that her brother would be up at that time of night, he had recently become a hardcore night owl, ever since he gotten a job working third shift. She also knew that he was off for the next couple of days, so he would be free to help her make arrangements to move all her things from InuYasha’s condo before he returned home from work the next day. She made the call at 3:23 a.m., and by 3:45 a.m., Souta was at her front door ready to sweep her away from all her troubles. She knew InuYasha wouldn’t think anything about her leaving at this time of night, due to the fact she was a medical physician and would often be on-call at odd hours of the night.

“So what's up Sis, and why are you so adamant about moving out or rather disappearing like the bandit in the night?” Souta inquired as he led his troubled sister to the passenger seat of his car.

Sliding onto the fine leather interior, Kagome melted into the butter cream seat before buckling her seatbelt. “Well you see…InuYasha decided to cheat on me a couple of months back and I am just now finding out about it,” It was hard for her to disclose even that much to her brother, but she felt that she owed him the truth. . . especially when she knew that at one point in time, Souta had looked up to Inuyasha. “I would have likely forgiven him for his one mistake after some time had passed, but this time, this time he just took it one step too far,” she shook her head, and paused, seeing her brother's hands tense around the leather of his steering-wheel. “Cheating is one thing, but cheating with her . . . . . and then, not even bothering to use protection. . . .I mean, it's bad enough she ended up pregnant, but" She continued in a near-whisper, "But what if she had been infected with AIDS, or syphilis, or any other number of STD's?!? Of course he wouldn't have been affected much because he's half-demon, but he still would have brought it home to me!”

“Wait a minute sis, who did he sleep with?" he asked, confusion evident on his handsome faces.

"Kikyo. . . ." she replied quietly.

"Wasn't that the woman he dated right before you?" Souta asked.

"Yeah, that's the one. She's the one that he always compare me to whenever we fought," she said, getting angry all over again, "The one I never seemed to be able to measure up against."

"That dirty hanyou bastard,” Souta cursed him, already putting the car in reverse, heading back up the street to give InuYasha a piece of his mind.

“No Souta!” Kagome plead, “Just take me home, please? I'm tired and I need to rest my nerves before the day begins…besides I don’t think I can handle any kind of confrontation, not tonight…I just want to get my things and move on with my life.”

“Are you sure Sis, because I can handle him for you if you want. . .” he trailed off.

“I’m sure,” she said flashing him a knowing smile. Her brother was tough and even looked the part, but still held no candle against InuYasha for obvious reasons. Souta was handsome dressed in the goth style he seemed to favor nowadays. He looked like a silent killer in his dark baggie jeans, and they had more than enough pockets to hide God knows what. He was wearing a black t-shirt with the logo “Regret Nothing” plastered across his toned torso, she smiled. That shirt had been one of her presents to him on his last birthday. A Kohaku original black leather jacket with his beloved anime/ manga, Akira, displayed on the back, completed his outfit.

“Well, just give me the word and I’ll wipe him clean off the map.” Souta assured with all sincerity.

After settling into Souta's house for the remainder of the night, Kagome woke up bright and early the next day on a mission. She’d called around and found herself a studio apartment within her budget and even better, it was close enough to her current place of employment that she would be able to walk to work every day if she so choose to. She’d also closed all their joint accounts and filed for a change of address with the post office. All that was left to do was to take her old furniture out of storage, move her things into her new apartment, and pick up her new cellular phone. By 10:30 a.m., InuYasha had already left for work, leaving her to play her role as Casper, the not so friendly ghost. By 2:50 p.m. her things had been moved and her job had been informed that she would be taking her vacation early this year, so that would have left her with three weeks to spare but she only requested one. That would give her an enough time to cope before she plunged back into dealing with other people's problems. So now, at a little after 10:00 p.m., she began to feel it was necessary to talk to her best friend in person, instead of just filling her in with all the personal details over the phone. So now here she was, patiently waiting for her soul sister to answer the door, and thus lead her back into the light.

~End Flashback~

The door swung open abruptly, just as Kagome reached out to knock on the door for a second time.

“Hey girl, what brings you here this late without a warning ring first,” Sango asked studying her friend’s not so cheery mood. Walking her over to the white sofa, she offered her anxious friend a drink.

“I just had to talk to you in person,” Kagome blushed under Sango’s intense glare.

After swallowing a large gulp of the dark wine offered to her, Kagome nervously fidgeted with the sleeves of her sweater.

“Alright girl, spill it…what do you need to talk about in the middle of the god-forsaken night and why was it so important that you couldn’t call…I know it has something to do with InuYasha,” Sango had gathered that.

“Well to start off, I have decided to leave InuYasha…he is just not what I expected and I'm tired of him running all over me…I-I love him but I don’t think I can forgive him this time, he really hurt me,” Kagome declared suddenly finding Kirara, Sango’s beloved cat, to be quite interesting at the moment, and so, she stared morosely at the cat who was nestled in her lap.

Fighting back the urge to roll her eyes at her dear friend for saying a whole lot of nothing, Sango insisted on hearing the details. “What did he do Kagome, I mean so far you aren’t telling me anything new, he is always doing something to hurt your feelings one way or another.”

It was true, he could be absent-minded about her feelings, but it was never intentional, at least she never thought it was intentional. “Well, you know his ex-girlfriend Kikyo, right?" "Yeah," Sango said warily. "Well, about eight weeks ago, they decided to have a drunken fling one night. Now she's pregnant, and says the baby is Inuyasha's. The worst part is that it is quite possible, they didn’t use any protection at all, and I found out about all of this just yesterday. I mean he just sat there, all that time like nothing ever happened. And I'm so naïve I never would have even known about it if he hadn't been forced to tell me. I can’t believe this shit. I gave him my heart and this is how he treats me. I loved him, Sango,” Kagome cried for the first time after hearing the shocking news. “I still love him; even though I know he doesn’t care enough about me to keep it in his pants. How could he disregard my feelings like that? Did he ever even love me at all? Or was I just a convenient piece of ass? I don't know, I just don't know anymore, Sango. My abused heart can't take it anymore. I just don't think I'd be able to live through another act of betrayal, and . . . . so, that's why I've decided to move on with my life.”

Sango looked at her best friend with sympathy, she had watched as over and over Inuyasha had broken her friend's heart time after time. He was forgiven all those other times, but even Sango had to admit that this act was absolutely unforgivable.

"Maybe this is the fresh start you need to be able to get on with your life, sweetie," Sango said gently as she wrapped a still crying Kagome in a hug.

After pouring her soul out on the strong steady shoulders of her soul sister, Kagome was too exhausted to make the drive home to her undisclosed studio apartment, so she slept on Sango’s comfy sofa with a light blanket over her. Meanwhile, Kirara curled up into a tight ball at the foot of the couch giving what comfort she could to her mistress's soul sister.

It's been two weeks since Kagome had last seen or spoken to InuYasha. She took her days in stride but it was always the nights that got to her. Many nights she would wake up in a lonely bed with no one to comfort her, to hold her as she slept, she missed having a comforting presence with her at night. . . .She missed him, but refused to give in, yet again. There was a man better suited for her out there somewhere, there had to be, this can’t be as good as it gets. So, taking her former relationship as a lesson well learned, Kagome went back into the work field ready to serve and heal her many patients.

“Doctor Higurashi, there is a young girl with her father in exam room A, I believe she has the chicken pox,” a plucky student nurse informed her before heading down the hallway.

Picking up the chart and the girl's file, Kagome greeted the dark-haired little girl with a smile before addressing her father. . . . but she was nowhere near prepared to see the person she now saw in front of her. Platinum white hair and amber eyes were all that registered in her brain, InuYasha, his named breezed over the tip of her tongue. Thankfully, before she could make a fool of herself in front of this eerie stranger, the tall stoic man introduced himself as Sesshoumaru Takahashi.

“I am here to have you take a look at Rin’s chicken pox,” he continued, after reading her obvious distress.

Snapping out of her daze she looked the girl over and found that, yess indeed, the little girl had a case of the chicken pox. Other than that, everything else seemed to be in order.

“Rin, you will be just fine and should be up and running about in a little over a week," she reassured her, giving the girl a brilliant smile before turning her attention back to the girl’s apparent father.

"So, Mr. Takahashi, I’ll have the nurse give you a list of things you can do to make sure she is comfortable and heals without any scars. Like I said, she will be fine and is already showing signs of recovering from the virus.”

Sesshoumaru just nodded and motioned for Rin to take her customary position at his side, but before he could make it out the door Kagome just had to know something.

“Pardon me for prying. . . . but are you in anyway related to InuYasha Tetsusaiga?” She knew this had to be the brother her former lover had always talked so badly about. She couldn't help but wonder why they had different last names.

After what felt like an eternity of silence, Sesshoumaru finally decided to answer, “He is my father’s child.”

“Oh,” she responded before asking another question, “If you don’t mind I have another question, but this time it’s about the relationship you have with Rin. I can sense that you are youkai but I only sense ningen energy emanating from your daughter.”

Watching the petite miko through narrowed eyes, Sesshoumaru rewarded her boldness with an answer, “She is not of my blood but she is still very much my daughter,” he articulated as he turned his back to the doctor once again.

“So she is your adopted daughter,” Kagome blurted out, but the stoic lord had already made his departure from the room.

On the other side of the door Rin knowingly uttered, “She was nice…and pretty too, don’t you think my lord?”

His only response’s was a sideways glance but that was enough for her to make her own conclusions. . . . and thus far she had yet to be wrong.
