A/N: This was born due to the gentle insistence on dear vexed_wench's part. The first part had a tempest, this one had sunshine. I like the idea of weather setting the scene so you'll prolly see a lot of that in the chappies to come.

The sun was shining as Miroku met him, babe in arms.
After the dreary, lone winter after the birth of his son, Miroku had abandoned the almost derelict hut in the mountains and left. Never intending to meet Inuyasha ever again. The hanyou had hurt him too much already. He'd not deign him the pleasure of ever calling himself the father of their child.
But he couldn't deny it. Could not deny his child's parentage. The white streaked raven locks were a distinct proof of that. But he did have his uncle's elfin ears so it would be easier for him. For that, Miroku was clad. His little Shin.
Born in late summer, it was now early spring. The world was waking in all hues of green. The sun shone brightly over the monks head and the subtle wind made his staff jingle in the breeze.
The monk gasped an alarmed breath in as he stopped in his tracks. The sun shone in his eyes and he could only see a lone figure sketched darkly against the obliterating whiteness. He couldn't defend himself against any threat for a prolonged period of time. Not with Shin. Grasping ofudas in his hand, the staff in the other, he waited.
“Miroku?”
He knew that voice. The other moved, as did he, and he could see them clearly now. It was indeed the ookami. Miroku still stayed alert and on guard as the other approached. He had not met any of his old acquaintances for over two years. He assumed the ookami had been sent to find him. But he was on the wolf's lands so it might just be a coincidence.
“Miroku?” the ookami asked, walking closer to him in a relaxed fashion. He noted the monk's nervousness, could smell the other was on his guard, fear mixed with anxiety. And the infant was a clear explanation for it all. The houshi didn't know what he'd do.
Standing a few feet from him, Kouga stopped.
“Kouga”, Miroku acknowledged him. He now cradled the child in his arms, shielding him from view.
The ookami's eyes widened. He looked into the monk's eyes. Defiance. A fierce beauty. But would he be his to claim anymore?
He'd been had.
And that babe in his arms. It was Inuyasha's. The bastard had had that first, too.
“Where's the mutt?” Kouga asked. His nose prickled with the sadness exuding from the monk. Sadness and anger. Fear. And lingering feelings of old love. They hit him hard. But made him glad, in a way, because if the love was old, then it meant that he could try and claim the little pretty monk as one of his own. And it was good.
Miroku looked to the side.
“He's gone”, he hugged the child in his arms tightly. “He did not want us. Told me I should have...” He gasped, pained, a single tear dropping from his eye. His arms protective around his child. His child.
“I'm sorry. The mutt was always such a bastard”.
Miroku looked up with tear clouded eyes. There was still that lingering sadness in them. That hurt. It made Kouga hurt too. Hurt for the man who was precious to him. The cute little monk had not deserved Inuyasha's callous treatment.
“Yes, I only wish I'd realized what would happen sooner”. The monk glanced down at his child. “But I'd not give him up for the world”. He smiled as only a proud father could.
Kouga came closer to him. He smiled to the monk.
“Can I see?”
Miroku's scent spiked up in silent fear momentarily, only to come down as he realized Kouga meant no harm. He lowered his hands and unwrapped the bundle to reveal a shock of white striped raven hair and a sleeping face.
“Cute”, Kouga commented. “What's the little tyke called?”
“His name is Shin”.
“ 'Real', eh?” Kouga stated.
Miroku nodded silently. His child was the only real and true thing in his tryst with Inuaysha.
“A good and strong name”, the ookami added.
The monk nodded absently. Shin had captured his finger in his fierce grip and was biting into it. He was teething, a fact which Miroku noted with a wince.
“Now now, no biting mommy”, Kouga mock chided.
Miroku scowled.
“So, where you going?” Kouga asked conversationally.
“Nowhere in particular”, Miroku answered.
“Care to come with me to the caves?” Kouga asked, feigning nonchalance. “Might be good to stay but with such a young pup and all. Ain't good to travel with young uns that small”.
Miroku cocked his head, considering the ookami's offer. It was tempting. To be guarded by the pack. And Inuyasha would surely keep away.
“But, Shin is Inuaysha's child. Won't your pack object?” His eyes swam with worry.
Kouga shook his head. “Naww, they're cool”.
And when you're my mate, no one can say anyhing about it!
“Alright then. Thank you for the offer, I'll accept”, Miroku said.
Kouga hung a bit behind Miroku as the other began to walk. He hoped he could be able to mend the monk's wounded heart and persuade him to love again. To let himself trust another. To let him be a father to his child.
“Kouga?” Miroku turned, frowning slightly.
“Comin'!”
The monk was something else. Something he'd pursue now he'd have the chance. The sun basked over them as they trekked through the wolf's lands. It meant hope. A new beginning for them both. Chance for something which would last.
True love.
