Chapter One: Lunch Music

The small village and its shrine sat near the edge of the Inu Clan's territory in the west and the Ookami's Southern Clan, where its head alpha resided. Well, just inside the Ookami's territory, really. It was a peaceful village, one left alone by demons for many generations, although for whatever reason was unknown.

The village shrine had no priestess, only an aging priest and his young ward who no one ever saw. The villagers could only speculate as to what his ward looked like. It was rumored she was the orphaned daughter of a great lord and that she was beautiful, but the villagers had to wonder - If she was so beautiful, why did the priest hide her away? Was she ugly?

Yet still.. did she even exist?

It was about ten years after he took in his ward, brought to him by a servant who died not long after arriving due to a rare demon attack, that the villagers began hearing a strange but beautiful voice coming from the forest near the shrine. Some said it was a mononoke; others said it was the spirit of a long dead priestess who had come to protect them, as since the singing started, demon attacks started to wane until nearly non-existent in that small village.

By this time, the rumors of the priest's ward had filtered away, but when the singing started.. the two rumors seemed to mingle.. giving rise to the story of the hime who was killed in the forest and became a mononoke instead of passing on. Her anger at her killers lashing out and drawing innocents to their deaths.

Not that anyone had really -died- in the forest except by a rare animal attack. Some claimed that the mononoke would actually save villagers.

For the most part, the village was left alone, though. Even the Ookami left them alone, and that was a blessing.

Truth was the voice belonged to the small hanyou girl living at the shrine - The priest's ward.

It was in her third or forth decade of life, looking no more then 12 years at the most and the priest now old {but still as stubborn as ever} that the Ookami Prince took interest in the stories of the Mononoke on his clan's borders. Especially since no one in his clan had come across such a creature, at least none that had the kind of voice the stories spoke of.

Moving through the trees, Kouga made his way towards the village where the stories originated, contemplating the tales. They all spoke of a beautiful voice, but no description of its owner. Apparently no one had ever actually seen this Mononoke.

Stopping when a haunting lonely voice caught his attention, he moved towards it, finding himself just inside the tree line surrounding the village's shrine. Before him, several yards away and oblivious to his presence, stood a young woman draped in the robes of a miko sweeping the walk to the shrine - with two odd additions. A scarf that covered most of the top and sides of her head, keeping her long snow-white {almost silver, really} hair back from her face, and a pair of odd gloves that reached up to her elbow under her sleeves.

To his nose though, it was obvious this girl was not human, let alone miko. She was a hanyou - a half demon.

A low rumble of appreciation emitted from his throat as his gaze moved over the young form in front of him. If his guess was correct, she was probably half a century his junior, his own appearance seeming to be that of a 16 year old male - had he been human.

Of course, his rumble did not go unnoticed by the hanyou; her stance moving to a defensive one and her broom being held up in such a way as it could be used as a staff to defend herself.

“Who's there?!” she demanded in a voice that was both soft and uncertain.

Kouga contemplated staying hidden - he was a wolf after all, and if he wanted to hide, no one would ever find him - but decided against it, stepping out into the sunshine of the early afternoon he responded with a haughty smirk. “The Ookami Prince, Kouga.

"And who are you, hanyou, to guise yourself as a human miko?”

She seemed taken aback by his words, actually taking a physical step away from him. Collecting herself quickly, she squared her shoulders and glared at him, responding with “My name is `Biki, and I don't have any idea of what you are talking about.”

Always one to enjoy a challenge, Kouga stalked forward, a predatory smirk gracing his lips as he inquired “Oh, really?”

“Yes. Really.” she retorted haughtily. “I am in training to become a priestess, and according to the priest, I'm almost there.”

Kouga couldn't help himself, he licked his lips. “Well then, if you're just a mortal female, rather then a half demon, I suppose there's no problem.” he said, stepping towards her predatorily.

She looked at him confused, taking a wary step back from him as he literally stalked towards her. “Excuse me?” she said softly.

“Since I came all this way, I might as well get something out of it… A meal should do nicely.” he said in a smug fashion. Of course, this just confused her more. “You're not exactly the brightest star in the sky, are you, pup?” he inquired in amusement. You just graciously put yourself on the Menu as the main course.” And with those words, he lunged for her.

With a startled cry, she ducked aside and attempted to outrun the Ookami, but he was much faster then she. Grabbing her by the back of her clothes, he yanked her back against and turned to face him. Grasping her upper arms in a rather bruising grip, he took in the sight she made.

With her attempted flight and her struggling, her hair scarf had come loose and started to expose the edge of white, fuzzy, triangular ears that almost blended in with her hair. Almost.

“Now, onna, why are you guised as a priestess? Are you the mononoke the villagers fear?!” he demanded, giving her a little shake and knocking the scarf further ascue until it came completely loose and drifted to the ground, completely exposing those soft white ears that nearly begged to be rubbed.

With a small cry at his bruising grip, she caved. “Yes!” She said, whimpering softly when he stopped shaking her. “I am the one the villagers mistook for a mononoke.

“The priest says that by devoting my self to the kami that I can repent for my parent's sin.” She said, looking away, her ears splaying to the sides as a dejected expression fell over her face.

Kouga just looked at her with an arched brow in question.

She eyed him in irritation then. “Now who's the stupid one?” she asked waspishly. “I'm a half demon, figure it out.”

Kouga just shook his head in confusion. “Humans.” was all he said with a smirk. “Now… back to Lunch.” he said, leaning towards her with a mischievous glint in his eyes.

Biki blinked. “Hey! Hold on a second, will you! If you're hungry, I've got a stew cooking… if you promise to leave the villagers alone, I'll feed you.” She said warily, knowing if she sent the wolf away hungry the villagers could possibly be in danger.

Arching a brow, he looked at her oddly. “A stew?” he inquired. At her nod, he sighed. “Fine.. Only if you will sing, too.” he said. It was strange, but he decided to do as she asked, even if the stew wouldn't fill him up.. if for no other reason then this gave him a reason to come back.

After all, his challenge would be to get this obviously poor and confused half breed to realize that she didn't have to repent for anything. Okay, yes… Most half-bloods were hated by both demons and humans, but this young girl… he found her amusing. And he liked her singing.

He decided to keep her to himself as he released her, and then followed her closer to the shrine, waiting outside it while she went in and retrieved a bowl of fresh stew and held it out to him with a chunk of bread. He was surprised when she sat beside him on the dusty ground and began singing.

Yes, he was defiantly keeping this little hanyou to himself.

A/N: Well, there's chapter One. I hope you liked it. Please Review. Oh, incase one hadn't realized, “Ookami” is the word used to describe Kouga and his wolf Demons. I'm not sure if it's used to describe his Wolves.
