Ch.2- I Couldnt Save Her...

Author’s Note: I was originally going to write this as a long one shot, but I was re-reading it and I decided to make it a short chapter story.

I think it turned out pretty good this way, I hope you like it. I know that the way I broke it up the chapters are not as long as most would like, but I broke it up like that on purpose.

The different chapters will be different scenes in the story. Every chapter is a different place and a different area, but they will all tie together in the end.

I know I had said that I wont post anymore chapters if I didnt get anymore reviews but I thought maybe if I continued the story and post one more chapter you guys might actually REVIEW!

I would REALLY REALLY REALLY appreiciate it. I dont know if the story is any good or not and I would like to know if theres any way I could make it better.

------~~~~~~Chapter 2- I Couldn’t Save Her…~~~~~~------
I remember that day…

The day I had to tell your mother that I failed to protect you…

I remember…

All to well…

His memories began to wonder.

He could still remember the day she died, her last words to him, her last breath. He could still remember crossing through the well a few days after the battle, he could remember sitting in the Goshinboku for hours trying to decide on whether or not he should go and talk to her mother.

He could still remember the look on Mrs. Higurashi’s face when he had shown up on her door step in the middle of the night soaking wet, eyes blood red and teary, hair a mess.

----~~~~Higurashi Shrine-3Days After Kagome’s Death~~~~----

3 Days After the Death of Kagome Higurashi…

InuYasha sat in his own time at the lip of the well. The sky was a beautiful blue. The color was clean and pure. Few clouds drifted through the peaceful heavens above.

The day seemed to be unusually bright considering the past days events.

Even that day was clear… until the battle started… he thought.

He stood staring into the darkness that was the bone eaters well, contemplating on whether or not he could go through with his plans.

I have to do this… he thought

Hesitantly, he gripped the wooden surface and jumped into the old well. He felt the same tickling feeling in his stomach and the familiar blue light greeted his sensitive eyes as the well’s magic transferred him to Kagome’s time.

Lets get this over with… he thought.

He had to admit he hadn’t been taking care of himself, he had to look like a mess.

He had to look like he had crossed the seventh gate of hell and back.

He was running himself ragged even worse as he thought about how to begin his confession.

As much as he was dreading it, he had to tell her mother what had happened.

He had to tell her because it was the right thing to do.

He didn’t want to do it, but he will because Kagome had asked him to.

Kagome had told him, with her last few breaths, to tell her mother and Souta that she loved them. The old man had died a few months before.

When the ticklish feeling in the pit of his stomach faded along with the bright light, and he felt his feet hit the solid ground he knew he had arrived in Kagome’s time.

He could hear the rain here, on this side of the well; as it pounded forcefully against the roof of the wooden housing. The wind was blowing fiercely outside along with the thunder he could hear booming through the sky.

He knew the lightning was sure to have lit the sky though he could not see it through the roof.

At least the weather hear fits in the horrible truth… he thought.

He jumped out of the well and felt his insides twist with guilt and sick anticipation.

Would she hate him for not protecting her daughter like he had promised her so many times in the past?

Would she scream at him?

Would she tell him to leave?

Would she tell him it was his fault?

Even if she did, he had already blamed himself, even though in his heart he knew it wasn’t his fault.

He shook the thoughts and the feelings of dread away and stepped up to the sliding door that served as the entrance to the old well house. Slowly, he slid open the aperture to the dark shack and glanced up at the dark sky.

He had come at a bad time, he knew. It was early, before sunrise; but he also knew he wouldn’t be able to build up the nerve to come here for this reason again should he return to the feudal era now.

He exited the little cabin and stepped into the dark shrine grounds. The air was stale and smelled of wet concrete and mud. The cloudburst fell hard on his body, soaking through his clothing making them heavy.

He moved slowly through the dark grounds. Even through the dark he would have been able to see just fine if it hadn’t been for the thick downpour of freezing droplets.

The only source of light being the bright flashes of lightning across the dark midnight blue of the sky.

Carefully, he found his way through the wet slightly flooded territory and made it to the main building.

When he made it to the dark covering above the entry way to the house of Kagome’s family, he raised his fist to knock on the front door but stopped before he touched the cold wood.

Could he really go through with this?

Could he really tell her that her only daughter had been killed?

Could he really tell her that he didn’t protect her like he should have?

I have to do this! he thought.

He squared his shoulders and brought his knuckles down to meet the hard surface of the freezing door.

No answer.

He tried again, a little harder this time.

Still nothing.

He began to get anxious, he didn’t know how many times he could work up the guts to knock on the door.

This is the last time, if she doesn’t answer I’ll leave. He thought.

He tried for a third time.

Finally he heard movement from somewhere within the house. He couldn’t quite make out what the noise was. The wind howling in his ears and the loud clashing of thunder forced him to flatten his delicate ears to his head.

He could hear Mrs. Higurashi muttering under her breath as she made her way to the door.

“Who in the world would be knocking at the door at this hour?!” he could hear her say.

The door handle turned and she continued to mutter.

“What on earth do you thing you’re doing knocking on someone’s door this late a-” she looked at him and froze. She was confused, what was he doing here? Wait….

Inu-InuYasha… oh no… Kagome!

She stared at him for a moment.

She knew. One look at InuYasha’s current state and she knew.

InuYasha avoided making eye contact for as long as it took him to work up the nerve to tell her what had become of her beautiful daughter.

He looked up at her.

Molten gold eyes met and clashed with honey hued brown. No words were passed and yet all that needed to be said was understood.

The woman stepped aside and gestured him into her home. He hardly took three steps before he heard her break.

He spun around just in time to catch her as she plummeted to the ground in tears and anguish over the death of her baby girl.

Kagome… thought InuYasha as the violently sobbing woman latched onto his figure.

He stood there in the darkness of the space between her kitchen and her living room and let her cry until she couldn’t cry anymore.

He was unsure of what to do.

Unsure of how to react.

Unsure of what to say to her to comfort her.

She had pulled him to the ground and now they both sat kneeling on the floor in that spot for what seemed like forever. The darkness of the empty rooms around them almost comforting.

Neither of them said anything nor did they make any attempt to move.

The moon shone through the kitchen window casting few streams of light to shine in the open living room behind him. The shadows seemed to drift through the dark room crossing the paths of the light.

The lightning flashed, temporarily lighting up the house. The thunder continued to clash in the sky causing a loud resonating BOOM to echo through the dark grounds.

Mrs. Higurashi stirred. InuYasha glanced down at the top of her head as he loosened his hold on the older woman. She pulled herself back from his arms and turned her head up to look at him.

InuYasha… she thought.

She saw the tears stream down his cheeks and for once he wasn’t trying to be tough, he wasn’t trying to hide how he was feeling, he was being completely open with her without even a word.

She rose to her feet and took his hand, pulling him to his feet as well. He led him slowly into the living room and gestured for him to sit on the couch.

After making the two of them some hot tea to try to relax both of their nerves, she sat in the chair across form InuYasha.

They sat in silence for a few minutes before she finally found her voice speak.

“She was my baby girl…” Mrs. Higurashi began, “my only daughter…” she continued. Tears were flowing again.

His eyes, though glazed over; glowed brightly in the moonlit room. He was watching her movements, watching her mouth as she spoke.

He was watching her tears as they burned hot trails down her cheeks, all the while his own went unnoticed.

He heard bustling upstairs towards Souta’s bedroom.

“The kids awake.” he said.

There was a noise behind them coming from the stairs.

“Mama? What’s going on. InuYasha?! What are you doing here, where’s Kagome?” Souta asked.

“Go back to bed Souta, everything is fine, InuYasha just came to pick a few things up for Kagome.” Mrs. Higurashi urged as calmly as she could.

“But-” Souta began, his mother interrupted, “Souta! Go back to bed!” she shouted.

She couldn’t keep her façade up much longer. She didn’t want her son to know his dear sister had died. She couldn’t bring herself to tell him just yet.

The boy turned and slowly made his way back up the stairs, stopping just at the top of the stairs to listen.

He knew InuYasha wouldn’t have come here this late to pick up something for Kagome.

Something happened.

Something bad.

“I’m sorry Mrs. H…” InuYasha said.

“Just tell me… was there anything you could have done? Was there anyway it could have been stopped?” she asked him sullenly.

Yes, he thought

“No, I couldn’t stop her.” he lied.

Souta continued to listen, his eyes widened and he slapped a hand over his mouth to prevent the gasp from slipping out without his permission.

His tears began to pour down his cheeks and he swallowed the sobs that threatened to be released.

His sister was dead.

“What happened?” she asked.

“She saved all of us.” He said.

At least she died for a good cause…

The way she would have wanted…

Protecting the people she loved… Souta thought.

“So… she died for a good cause?”

No. It should have been me… thought InuYasha

“Yes.” he said again.

“My poor baby…” she whispered.

“I’m sorry.” he said, “I wish I could have saved her… I failed to protect her.” he continued.

“Its not your fault, InuYasha… I don’t blame you and neither will Souta. We know you have always looked after Kagome… we know you did what you could” she said.

Souta continued to listen, he knew InuYasha would have saved his sister if there was any way he could have.

He didn’t doubt that at all, he believed it with his whole heart and soul.

I could have saved her… InuYasha thought again. His mind had whispered the thought to him continuously since the tragic event.

“I have to go…” he whispered as he rose to his feet and prepared to leave. He began walking towards the door when Mrs. Higurashi called after him.

“InuYasha wait!” she said.

A disturbing silence fell over the dark room. A flash of lighting lit up the pain stricken face of a mother who had just been told of the death of her only daughter.

The loud thrash of thunder was the only sound that could be heard for a few moments.

The seconds ticked by, each one weighing more heavily than the last on the shoulders of the two people.

Souta still remained on the stairs listening.

InuYasha stopped and glanced over his shoulder.

“Will I ever see you again?” she asked.

No. He thought.

“Yes.” he lied again.

She smiled.

She knew he wasn’t coming back just as well as he knew, but his answer seemed to comfort her.

He looked forward once again and walked back into the rain and out to the well house.

He slid open the door to the shed and stopped. He turned and took one last look at the house that was once the home of the girl, no; the woman he had loved and lost.

Mrs. Higurashi was standing at the open door, watching as he walked through the grounds. Every flash of lighting lit up his retreating form, ever thundering BOOM seemed to shake the very ground she stood on.

The lightning blazed again, lighting his face as he turned and look back at the house.

She gave him a small, sad smile and walked back inside. Once the door was closed he turned away from the house.

He let his head drop and his site hit the cold wooden floor.

The tears fell, staining the dark dirty wood beneath his bare feet.

He looked forward once again, sliding the door back in place behind him. Without a second glance, he jumped into the old well and was transported back to his own time.

Mrs. Higurashi moved back to the spot in front of the chair she had previously been seated in and stared at the closed door InuYasha had just exited through.

Her tears flowed freely as she mourned her loss.

A small whimper sounded from behind her at the entry way to the living room.

She turned around just in time to catch her son as he ran into her arms.

She dropped them both to their knees as she held her son. He let the violent sobs tear through him freely as his mother rocked him back and forth whispering soothing nothings to him as they both cried.

“Mama… is Kagome really-” he couldn’t even finish his sentence.

“Yes Souta… Kagome is gone.” she whispered.

The two of them remained kneeling there for a while longer mourning the loss of their daughter and sister.

They will never hear her shout her arrival home from the feudal era again.

He will never be able to tease her sister again.

She will never hold her daughter in her arms again.

They will never see their dear Kagome again…
