Chapter 2: Kagome Cracks
Kagome woke early in the morning; sapphire blue eyes sparkled in the sunlight coming in from the windows located behind her bed. It had been a full week since the death of her parents, with the thought Kagome began crying anew. The funeral was over and she had moved from the states to Japan with her brother, leaving all of her friends and home behind. It had been just a week and she had lost everything that she held dear. Yes, she still had her older brother, but she barely knew him anymore, it had been six years since she had last seen him. Kagome was only nine at the time, Naraku was nineteen, and he left for Tokyo with his best friend since kindergarten and his family, the Taisho’s, for college, and he had never been back since. Sure, she still got phone calls from him on her birthday as well as holidays, as well as sending her gifts, but her was never actually there. Naraku had no idea of her hobbies, her favorite foods, how she was doing in her classes or what she was taking, her aspirations in life, nothing. In essence, he knew basically nothing about her.
Standing from her queen size bed, Kagome gathered her clothes that Naraku had gotten her from the closet and headed to her bathroom that was connected to her room. Turning on the hot water in her shower she allowed it to heat as she turned to face the mirror. Puffy red eyes stared back at her, and she began to glare at herself. Blue eyes flashed in anger and disgust at herself as the gravity of what had happened hit her. Her parents were dead, her little brother was dead, and in a way it was all her fault. No, she didn’t hold a gun to their head and shoot them, but she was the one that made them come to her honor ceremony. They had been speeding to get there, she wanted, no, needed them to be there, and when they didn’t show up, she was angry, and they were dead.
.oOo~*:Flashback:*~oOo.
Kagome was standing outside of her school after the awards ceremony. Her waist length wavy ebony locks were carefully piled atop her head in a curly up do, her face was painted with the barest amount of makeup, a light yellow, knee length sun dress fluttered around her in the wind, and a look of anger crossed her face as she once again glanced at the time on her cell phone.
Her family was supposed to be here two hours ago and the ceremony ended over an hour ago. Her father was always working late at work trying to provide for her and her family, but he had promised her that he would be here for her honor society ceremony. Her mother had to wait for her father, of course, because the family could only afford the one car, and her father almost always had it. Crossing her arms in front of her chest, Kagome gave a small huff, the sun was setting and it was beginning to cool off outside. Cursing her parents to hell and back, a small shiver passed over her and she picked up her cell phone and attempted to call her father…again. After two rings somebody answered the phone.
Not waiting to hear even a hello, she began to yell and scream into the phone about what horrible parents they were being that they couldn’t even come and pick her up from her stupid ceremony that they had promised to come to. After her horrendous rant, the person on the other side of the phone stuttered a small apology before dropping the news that she didn’t want to hear, her parents were dead. Apparently almost two hours ago her family had been rushed to the hospital for injuries sustained in a car crash, her father had ran a red light and a semi truck coming through didn’t have enough time to stop before running directly into the side of their small car. Sota and her mother had died instantly; her father had died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Hanging up the phone after listening to the story, Kagome called the only person she could think of, her elder brother Naraku. Tears sprang to her eyes as she told him what had happened, and he said he would be on his way, that he would be there in twelve or so hours. Hanging up the phone, Kagome became numb as she started on her trek to the hospital, her brother would hopefully be there soon, and she didn’t know where else to go.
.oOo~*:End Flashback:*~oOo.
Her parents were dead and it was ALL HER FAULT. If she hadn’t demanded that her father be there on time, he wouldn’t have been speeding, he wouldn’t have run the red light, and her whole family would still be alive. Growling at herself and thinking of what a horrible person she was, she threw her fist into the mirror breaking it. Shards and sparkles of glass flew everywhere, cutting Kagome’s arms and hands as it showered around her before landing on the floor. Falling to the floor, the glass continued to cut into her legs and face as she threw herself down and sobbed for all she was worth.
.oOo~*:A Little Earlier:*~oOo.
Sesshomaru glared at the phone that was ringing on his nightstand. It was 7:00 on a Saturday morning and he growled at whoever would have the audacity to call so early on his day off. Silver white hair caressed his body as he sat up in bed and grabbed the annoying piece of technology that had decided to interrupt his sleeping. “What?” Was his gruff response into the phone after he had flipped it open.
“Sesshomaru, it’s Naraku, I need you to come over to my apartment for a little while. In addition to needing to get caught up in what happened at work the last week, I need to have a discussion with you about my baby sister; I have a feeling that I am going to have to take some more time off of work.”
Internally growling at his friend and wondering why he couldn’t wait another couple hours, Sesshomaru agreed to come over and said he would be there in twenty minutes. Standing from the bed, the black satin sheets slid off of his toned body showing off his black silk sleeping pants and naked torso. Heading over to his dresser he grabbed out a tight fitting red polo shirt and dark blue jeans. He quickly grabbed the keys he had sitting next to the door and exited the apartment to his silver Nissan Z. Jumping in the car, he went speeding out of the parking lot and towards his friend’s house.
It took just under 15 minutes for him to arrive at Naraku’s. He exited his car and Naraku met him at the front door. Glancing at his friend, only one thing came to mind, he looked like shit.
“Good morning, Sesshomaru, I’m sorry I got you out of bed so early, but we need to talk”
“Hn”
“Would you like some coffee? Tea? Anything?” Naraku showed Sesshomaru to the dining room table where he gestured for him to have a seat.
“Coffee, if you already have it brewed”
Naraku gave a small nod of his head as he poured his friend a cup of Joe and sat it down in front of him before sitting across the table from him.
“So what is it that you need to talk to this Sesshomaru about Naraku?”
Naraku let out a small sigh, “As you know, when my parents and little brother died, Kagome was the only one left, however, we had no other family members and now I am her legal guardian.”
“Hn, and what would this possibly have to do with me?”
“Well, School was almost out, and since her grades had been so well all year, the teachers decided to just pass her so that she wouldn’t have to deal with any more with moving and all of that, but now I have her here, and no where to put her, but I do not want to leave her alone. I have a feeling that she is still in denial about what has happened, and I fear for her health, however, at the same time I can’t stay home with her forever, and I was wondering if maybe I could bring her to work with me, maybe she could even work under you for the summer as your secretary, it should keep her mind off of things and at the same time keep her under constant supervision by some one that I trust.”
“I suppose this Sesshomaru could give her a try, when would you like for her to start?”
“I don’t know just yet, I was hoping within a couple weeks, I can’t miss work too much longer as I have said.”
“Very well, is that all?” Sesshomaru said with a slight question in his voice. His friend surely couldn’t drag him all the way over for just that.
“Well, no, as a matter of fact, I didn’t. On top of that, I am going to need to return to the states for a few days in about a month, in order to deal with all of the legal issues that come with what happened. I don’t want to bring Kagome out for that, and I was wondering if maybe she could stay with you, I don’t want to leave her with just anyone.”
Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes slightly before nodding his acceptance and beginning to rise from his seat, “Very well, but when you get a better idea of when and how long, tell me.”
“Of course,” Naraku quickly stammered before rising to show Sesshomaru to the door. Suddenly a loud crash was heard from the direction of Kagome’s room and Sesshomaru began to smell blood. Rushing to where the sound originated from, Sesshomaru and Naraku found Kagome lying on the floor in her bathroom, surrounded by glass and her own blood. Sesshomaru quickly crossed the space and picked up the little onna, she was so light and seemed so frail as he held her in his arms.
“There is too much glass and blood, we need to take her to the hospital, I know some of this will need stitches.” Naraku nodded dumbly as he turned off the shower and ran to the front of the apartment and out the door with Sesshomaru on his tail. Sesshomaru sat in the back of Naraku’s sedan holding the small girl in his lap as Naraku jumped in the front seat and began heading for the hospital.
