Two: Look At You Saving the World On Your Own
Inuyasha looked up from the floor and stopped pacing when he heard the knock at his door. He opened it, hoping for some kind of explanation, but he was only met by another soldier saluting him. "Sir," the soldier said, "the lieutenant ordered us not to offer you any sort of explanation until she came out of surgery. She would like the priviledge of welcoming you to our station."
Inuyasha looked past the big, buff soldier. "Thanks, man, but... where is she?"
The solider nodded to him and stepped back, gesturing for Inuyasha to come out of the small apartment and into the cold, silver hallway. Inuyasha complied, and he followed the solider down a series of hallways just like the one he lived in until they came to another door. The soldier stopped and gestured to the door. But before Inuyasha could open it, the soldier rested his hand on the young man's shoulder.
Inuyasha met his gaze. The soldier nodded to him. "Go easy with the questions if you would, son," he told Inuyasha gently. "She won't admit it, but she's a bit weak right now." Then the soldier became silent and stiff once again, and Inuyasha pressed forward.
The lieutenant's small apartment wasn't anything like the one he'd been shoved into; hers was actually lived in. It seemed quaint and homey, and it had this familiar quality that made Inuyasha feel as if he'd been there countless times before. He took a moment to look around the place. The living room held a small, light yellow sofa pushed against the far wall, and a small, flat panel television against the other one. A short, wooden coffee table sat in front of the sofa, and there was a mug sitting on a coaster on it. Kagome lay on the small sofa, her small body hidden beneath a thick yet soft-looking comforter, and she sat up slowly, wincing a little as she pushed the comforter onto the floor.
Inuyasha sat down beside her, helping her sit up. She smiled at him softly. "Thank you," she murmured quietly, her cheeks turning a little red. She wore a thin, dark blue tank top that seemed to hang from her slender frame and a pair of khaki cargo jeans. She slowly lifted the right side of her tank top to show Inuyasha the white bandage wrapped tightly around her waist. "Kikyo had to perform surgery as soon as I came in the door," she explained to him. "It was a bad wound, but it would've been much worse if it hadn't been taken care of in time."
They sat in silence for a few minutes until Kagome said simply, "Ask whatever questions you have, and I'll give you an honest answer. You may not like it, but I'll give it."
Inuyasha nodded, mulling her words over in his head. "Okay," he said. Then he suddenly shot to his feet, bouncing Kagome a little and really startling her. "What the hell happened to the WORLD?" he cried out, waving his arms in the air spastically. He immediately felt bad about his intense attitude; the soldier had asked him to go easy. The girl was hurt; he needed to be a little gentler, he knew. So he just sat back down slowly, not wanting to startle her further.
Kagome started to giggle, but then caught herself, remembering that Inuyasha seemed already to have a short fuse. She didn't want to set him off, and he already seemed as if he were under enough stress as it was. She cleared her throat before beginning, "Well, you were put under in the year 2010. You were a willing participant in the experimental procedures to cure your illness - which, as I've already told you, remains nameless. But not cureless!" She smiled brightly at the last part. Shaking her head at Inuyasha's blank gaze, she continued, "The procedures were run by a woman called Dr. Midoriko Higurashi. She was a brilliant mind, and she had several competitors in the biological engineering community. These competitors..." Kagome closed her eyes and sighed. "They started to go a little too far in 2015, when Midoriko created the first cloned embryo. She implanted it in a surrogate mother's womb, and it went as well as a normal pregnancy would. The baby born of the cloning was Midoriko's own clone, and the experiment was a complete success; my predecessor, Karma, was the first ever cloned human being. Cloning became legal; the laws surrounding it remained very strict, but it was a possibilty now, not just a dream. Things were looking up.
"Then Midoriko's competitors tried to raise the bar on her," Kagome said, her tone darkening a little. "They succeeded in creating something no one would ever dream of... but they couldn't control their creations. Monsters, several different kinds and ethnicities and shapes and sizes. They were all beasts, and they killed their creators and ran rampant. The world became overrun by them in a few short weeks. They massacred, killed, and forced us underground. The bigger nations tried to use nuclear weapons against them..." Kagome raspberried and rolled her eyes. "Of course, that didn't do any good. Midoriko became the head of the scientists that were left underground, and she started on more experiments to try to find a way to fix what happened. Her clone, Karma, grew up, and they ran some experiments on her; as the years went by, they cloned Karma, creating another copy of Midoriko. This one, they experimented on as well. As the centuries flew past us, clone after clone would be made of Midoriko, and she would be experimented on and have the traits from the others. Super strength, super agility, super intelligence, super healing... all kinds of things."
She stopped and watched Inuyasha. He barely noticed that she'd finished her tale; his gears were turning too hard. There was something he was missing.
"When we were in the chopper," he mumbled, "on the way to this base... You said something. When I mentioned Midoriko..." His eyes widened. "You said that you were her." He stared at Kagome in disbelief. The small girl just sat there and blinked at him.
His mind was racing. 'Is that what she is?' he wondered. 'She does look a lot like the doctor.'
"Lieutenant," he started, but she stopped him. "Call me Kagome," she told him, smiling cheerfully. "Only the soldier boys call me by my rank."
He nodded, smiling appreciatively at her. "Kagome," he corrected, "are you..." He didn't know how to ask it.
"A clone?" she finished for him, giggling a little at his obvious insecurity. She nodded. "Yes," she replied. "I am."
Inuyasha sat back. "And you have super powers?"
Kagome outright laughed at that one. It startled Inuyasha a little; it was a loud laugh, but he found that he liked the sound of it. After a minute, her loud laughter died down until she was only chuckling. She grinned at Inuyasha. "Sorry," she told him, "it was just real funny the way you put it. Physiologically, I am not unlike any other human being. I eat, I sleep, I breathe, I pee, I have bad dreams..." She shrugged. "I'm basically the same. Physically speaking, of course, but not legally."
Inuyasha tilted his head at that. "What do you mean?"
They were interrupted by a knock at the door. Inuyasha stood to open the door for Kagome. It was a woman with short, raven hair cut in a bob, and she had big, pretty blue eyes. She ran right past Inuyasha and gave Kagome a giant hug around the girl's neck, careful of the soldier's tender waistline. "Kagome! Oh, God, I hope you're all right!"
"She would be if you weren't trying to squeeze the life out of her!" Inuyasha yelled, slamming the door shut and stepping toward the two.
The woman stood and stared at Inuyasha. Kagome turned a bright red color and glared at Inuyasha. "Mr. Taisho, meet my mother, Akira Taijiya."
He stared at Kagome. "You have a mom?" he asked.
Kagome sighed. "Okay, I'm tired now, and my mother is here. I've scheduled you for an appointment with Dr. Higurashi in the morning, at ten. One of the boys will come to wake you up and take you to her offices. She will answer any question you have about clones or me or anything else. My job is done; welcome to the future." With her hands, she shooed him.
He nodded, turning a little red himself, and left, shutting the door quietly behind him. Then he cursed when he realized he had no idea how to get back to his own apartment.
