Hercules
Chapter two: Hercules
One night. That’s all that passed by and already Sesshomaru and Inuyasha were at each other’s throats. Inuyasha would do whatever he could to provoke Sesshomaru, and Sesshomaru in return would say something to anger the half demon. Human or not, he still possessed is sharp tongue.
“I still can’t believe it.” Sango said over breakfast. “I mean, Sesshomaru is just a human now. A weak one at that. Its just… unbelievable.” Seeing that Sesshomaru didn’t hear her, she sighed. “I mean, he just doesn’t know how to handle it. From what I’ve seen, Shippo can beat him up.”
“Maybe we should take it upon ourselves to train him to be strong.” Miroku pointed out. “You can train him in the art of strength, and I can teach him in the art of fighting.”
With a loud slap, Sango stood and sat next to Kagome. The others could already guess that Miroku placed his hands on her bottom.
“There’s more then to strength and fighting.” Kagome pointed out. “There’s also the sprit. After all, one must train the mind before training the body.”
The other two nodded. “But just because he’s human doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to fight.” Miroku pointed out. “He just needs to build his strength up again. So how about I teach him on how to train the spirit so he can control his anger.”
“His anger is a lot better then Inuyasha’s at least.” Sango looked over at the two brothers. Inuyasha was screaming at Sesshomaru, while the other just sat there, making small comments every now and then. His face was controlled, but his words were angry.
Kagome sighed and stood. “I better break up the fight before Inuyasha decides to get violent with him.” She wasn’t looking forward to this. It was the fifth time she did this to them. And it’s only been a night. She did wonder how Sesshomaru got the curse. Kagome knew that Sesshomaru was a powerful demon who never let anyone get the best of him. So how he was human and how he let himself get turned into a human confused the miko.
“Just because I don’t know the bastard doesn’t mean that I’m ignorant.” Inuyasha growled at him.
Sesshomaru glanced at him. “Your nothing more then a pathetic half-breed.” Sesshomaru sighed. “An incompetent fool who is ignorant of his own heritage. If you were even half the man that father was, you would have more pride in yourself.”
“At least I’m not some weak fool who got turned into a human. You call me weak, but I’ve seen a baby deal more punches then you did yesterday.” Inuyasha smirked, knowing that it would piss off his brother by saying that.
As quickly as he could, Sesshomaru stood, Tenseiga out, but shaking from his lack of strength to hold it up with one hand. “I hate the fact that father’s blood runs in your veins.” He growled. “you bring shame to his name and what he stood for. Your nothing but a half-breed, and will amount to nothing more then just a half-breed. I maybe a human at the moment, but I also was a demon. Not once was I a hanyou like you are.”
“Hey!” Kagome yelled, getting between the two. “Stop it alright? We need to get along, not fight each other. So back off alright?”
Inuyasha growled at the other before letting his own sword go. “I need to walk.”
Sesshomaru placed Tenseiga back in its place. “What do you want miko?” He demanded of her.
Kagome sighed and ran a hand though her hair. “I know your strong Sesshomaru-sama, but you’re not that strong right now. Sango and Miroku said they can help you out. But first, can you please tell me what kind of curse you have? If we can figure it out, then we can help you break it.”
The man looked at her for a moment before going to the others. It was against his pride to ask for help, or even let other’s help him. But he couldn’t break this curse on his own. And if he recalled, Inuyasha’s group had the tendency to run into trouble no matter where they went. If he wanted to live long enough to break the curse, he would have to learn all over again to grain strength, agility, and train his dull senses. “Teach me.” Was all he said as he sat down.
With a smile, Sango and Miroku nodded.
**
A week came and went without any trouble. Inuyasha ignored Sesshomaru, and in return, Sesshomaru ignored Inuyasha. Sango and Miroku both took turns teaching the former Taiyokai, and each day they got to know more and more about him.
“You know, demonic powers or not, he’s not that bad of a guy.” Sango told Kagome as they slipped into the hot spring. “He learns quickly and doesn’t complain. He might surpass even Miroku and I before too long.”
Kagome gave a lazy nod. The springs always made her feel more relaxed and lazy. “Inuyasha says we’re nearing a town soon. We can get Sesshomaru a sword there. Without claws and Toukijin, he’s defenseless. Well… he can hit harder then he used to. But fists don’t count when you’re fighting against a demon.”
Sango sighed softly. “This is true. How’s Inuyasha holding up? He still seemed really angry when we left.”
“That’s because it’s the night of the new moon. Sesshomaru is going to find out against Inuyasha’s secret tonight” She looked up at the starless night. “Its cloudy so we might get lucky and he wont realize what phase the moon is in.”
Both girls look up at the sky and just let themselves relax under the starless night.
**
Sesshomaru smirked, trying hard not to make snappy comebacks at Inuyasha. So it seemed that at a certain time, he turned into a human. It was too funny.
“Go ahead, get it out you bastard.” Inuyasha growled.
“Fine then,” Sesshomaru’s smirk widened. “It seems that I was mistaken Inuyasha. You’re like a woman.”
Inuyasha arched an eyebrow. “Excuse me?” He was waiting for something more snappy. Like how he wasn’t just a half-breed, but a half-breed that became a human once a month. Not that he was like a woman.
“Yes, a woman. A female hits a cycle once a month for about a week. They change, become angry, snappish, and intolerable. You act like that all the time. The only difference is that once a month, your change is on the outside. Not the inside.”
It took a moment to process in his mind, before it hit him like a brick. “You’re a bastard you know that?!” Inuyasha screamed at him.
His smirk never wavered. “I rest my case.”
Miroku shook his head and sighed. Figures that once you take out two girls, they become like this.
“What’s going on here?” Kagome asked the group.
“Nothing, I’m just comparing Inuyasha to a female.”
Both Kagome and Sango shared confused looks.
Miroku sighed once more. “A female cycle.”
Kagome’s face turned red in embarrassment, and Sango turned red in anger. But it was Kagome who acted first. “Don’t you dare make those comments!” Kagome snapped at him. “that’s degrading to women!”
“Then tell me, what would you call what he has?” Sesshomaru asked her.
“He has a curse just like you Sesshomaru.” Kagome snapped at him. “His just isn’t breakable like yours is. So you shouldn’t go around throwing insults at him, or us for that matter.”
Sesshomaru stood and approached Kagome. “And I’m guessing you are on your cycle Kagome? That could only explain your behavior.”
Kagome’s face turned another shade of red, and before anyone knew it, she slapped him hard across the face. “Sesshomaru you’re a jerk!” she screamed, running off.
Everyone stood there in silence as she disappeared into the woods.
“You deserved that I hope you know.” Sango said, her voice filled with venom. “You don’t just go and say that to a girl. Kagome was just trying to help you out.”
The man sighed and followed after her. He didn’t know why, but his mind just demanded him to do so. To him, he said nothing wrong, just pointing out the obvious. But in everyone else’s mind, he insulted the miko greatly. How, he never would know.
Then again, he would never been in this position if he didn’t let his guard down. He was getting stronger each day, and yet, he still hadn’t broken the curse. What did that witch mean by ‘knowing what true strength is?’ He needed to figure it out soon. Because if he was in this form any longer, he was going to go nuts. Never again though. He was never going to let his guard down. And if someone he didn’t trust came his way, he wasn’t going to walk away with their head in tact.
“What do you want?”
Sesshomaru broke out of his thoughts as he saw Kagome by the stream, an angry expression on her face. “I will not apologize.” He said simply. He never said he was sorry for anything.
Kagome looked away, still angry at what he said. On top of that, he wasn’t going to apologize for it! “Then what do you want?” She snapped this time.
“Why are you helping me miko? This Sesshomaru has tired to kill you in the past. Why do you care to help me out?”
Kagome sighed. “First off, my name is Kagome. Get it right. At least your not calling me Kikyo like Inuyasha did. Secondly, I’m you out because you’ve saved me a couple times. If you didn’t save me from Mukotsu, I would be dead by now.” She sat down and held her knees close to her chest. “I never got to thank you for that. So this is my thanks.”
“Do not read too much into it Kagome.” Sesshomaru walked to her and just stood behind the girl. “I was only passing by when that happened. I saved you by default. Nothing more then that.”
Kagome’s face fell, and she quickly hid her face in her knees. He couldn’t smell her tears anymore. Not with his acute sense of smell gone. “Oh…” She whispered. “So why are you here then if its not to let me pay you back?”
Sesshomaru watched her carefully for a moment. “I… do not know. You offered, and I needed to learn. You and your companions helped me. For that, I’m grateful.” He walked over and sat down next to Kagome. “there is one more thing I need help with. This time, I’m asking you to help me.” To say it out loud was something he never really would do. But he was getting desperate. He longed to be a yokai again. And if he didn’t act soon, some other yokai would try to take over his castle.
Kagome lifted her head and looked at him. “I’m listening.”
Sesshomaru took a deep breath and slowly told her the story how he became a human. He left no detail out, and made sure to tell her how he was to break it.
After listening to his story, Kagome giggled. “She must not have meant the strength of your muscles, but the strength of your heart.”
The man arched an eyebrow. “What nonsense do you speak?”
“Inuyasha told you I was from the future right?” Sesshomaru gave a small nod, though it would never make sense to him. “Well, in my time, we have something called movies. They’re kinda like a play, but you can watch it on something called a TV. And you can watch it any time you want to. It’s hard to explain. But any ways, there’s this movie by Disney called Hercules. It’s based on a legend in Greek mythology I believe.” She coughed, realizing she was getting out of subject again. “Anyways, Hercules was born a god, but one day go ripped from the heavens and turned into a human by these two demons, but he got to keep his inhuman strength of a god. Before the demons could kill him, a wife and a husband found him and saved him from the wrath of the demons.
“When he grew up, he had no idea he was the son of a god, or anything like that. He just thought he was a freak. One day, he went to his father’s temple, and asked for advice from the gods. His father came to him and told him in order to become a god again, he must become a true hero. So Hercules did whatever he could to become a hero in the eyes of mortals. But no matter what he did, it wasn’t enough. Soon he fell in love with a human girl, and promised himself he would protect her forever. But when she died before his eyes, Hercules went down to the underworld to save her. When he risked his life to save his love, he became a god. Hercules then realized that his father meant, to be a true hero, he was to use the strength of his heart, and not the strength of his muscles.”
Sesshomaru listened to the story and gave a small nod. “You ask the impossible from me Kagome. Yokai are not gods, we do not love. So for me to use the strength of the ‘heart’ you are telling me to do something that I can never do.”
Kagome bit her lip. “Well, you think about it, maybe this witch did this to your father as well. Maybe that’s what she meant by her helping your father. Maybe this is to teach you how to love. To care more then about power and strength.”
Sesshomaru stood. “You speak nonsense to me.” He began to walk away. “This Sesshomaru doesn’t know how to love.”
Kagome sighed as continued to look out at the spring. “Then I don’t know how to help you.”
He stopped or a moment. “No, you do not.”
The girl sighed once more and stood. “I better get back to camp then…” As she put her back to the river, hands came out, grabbing her from behind.
Sesshomaru turned quickly, hearing her echoed scream. A demon with large black wings flew above the river. “Hello there.” He purred. “it seems like I caught myself a prize.” He licked up the side of Kagome’s face, causing the girl to scream against his hand, trying to pull away.
“Let her go.” Growled Sesshomaru. His hand instantly went to his sword.
The demon laughed. “Come and get her if you can.” With that, he flew off, his laughter echoing though the forest.
