Cleaning up the Mess

Chapter 2

As he flew through the air, Sesshomaru did not think about what had transpired. He did not think anything at all, his only concern at the moment was for the health of the one cradled in his arms.

"Inu...yasha...," came the soft plea of the miko Kagome in his arms. He glanced down at her, but her eyes were still closed, and she was fidgeting in pain and discomfort from what he had done to her.

The castle of the Western Lands was in sight now, and Sesshomaru let a little sigh escape his lips as he came in for a landing. He could remember the time before the great extinction that Inu-youkai soldiers would snap to attention and let him enter through the gate. Now though all that was left was a crumbling castle that he called home when he wasn't traveling, along with his loyal companions, Jaken, Rin, and Ah-un.

"Sango...," the miko again whispered, and Sesshomaru wasted no time in barging in through the wooden door and hurrying to his personal chambers, ignoring Jaken and Rin who had run out to welcome his return.

Barging into his personal quarters, the demon lord gently laid Kagome down on the bed, then summoned both Rin and Jaken into his quarters. He silenced both of them with a menacing glare. He put Shippou and Kirara down next to Kagome.

"Jaken, Rin, I place this woman into your care. You are to clean her wounds and bandage them, and make sure sufficent food and water is provided for her. Jaken, should you fail, I will use your entrails as fishing line," ordered the taiyoukai with a menacing growl escaping from his lips. He was beginning to feel very angry for loosing control of himself like he did, even if he was under the influence of a powerful object like the sacred shikon jewel, which was still clasped within the miko's right hand.

"Ulp...Yes Milord, right away," stammered out Jaken, hurrying to the river to gathered the needed water while Rin went about scrounging for linen cloth for the bandages. Nodding his head in satisfaction, Lord Sesshomaru hurried outside of the castle and took flight in his orb form. He needed to hurry back to the others as soon as possible.

It was a short time later when Sesshomaru arrived at the scene of devastation that he had left barely an hour earlier. Inuyasha and Miroku were still dead as ever, but Sango was still alive, although her time was growing short.

He first walked over to Inuyasha, and went to place his hand on the hilt of his sword, Tensiega. A sudden burning sensation had him pulling his arm away from the sword. He looked first to his burned hand, then to where little sparkles of energy were still racing around the hilt of the sword.

Tensiega rejected me?

Sesshomaru closed an eye as something stung it. Reaching up with one of his fingers, he wiped his eye and pulled it away. He was suprised to see one of his own tears glistening in the moonlight.

I killed my own brother, the monk, and soon the demonslayer, and I cannot save them.

He walked over to where the demonslayer laid up against the tree, and removed his shirt to place over her body. He started to pick her up, but she suddenly spoke.

"No, leave me be," muttered Sango.

"I may be able to save you still. The miko Kagome will live, as will Shippou and Kirara," said Sesshomaru.

"What about Inuyasha and Miroku?" asked Sango, although in her heart she knew the truth.

"Both dead, by my hand. As you will soon be, I'm afraid," offered up Sesshomaru in as close to making an apology as he had ever come.

"Perhaps that is for the best. I will be re-united with my family and village people, and the monk, who will be re-united with his father and grandfather before him. And Inuyasha will be able to be with both his mother and Kikyo, when she returns to the afterlife," said Sango.

Her eyes were still closed, and her head rolled to the side. Her last breath came, and her body went still.

His demon blood again racing through his veins, Sesshomaru transformed into his true form, letting loose one loud and lasting howl of anguish into the night air of the forest, before he went to work. With his massive paws, he dug a grave at the site, and gently lowered each of the three bodies into their own respective grave. He then pushed the dirt back onto the graves, before adding some rocks on top from a local stream.

Transforming back into his normal self, he offered up a prayer, something he had seen monks do but never done himself. Being careful not to touch the hilt of the sword, he grabbed Inuyasha's Tessaiga and again transformed into a orb, taking off torwards the castle where he had left the miko in care of his retainers.

A/N: A short little chappy, but I figure it's better than not updating the story at all.
